1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.3  ~~  Anna Maria Hyder

Anna was born at Rotherfield in 1862 (Rotherfield 1862 December qtr Volume 2b Page 90) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 14th December 1862. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that Anna was living with her parents at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. Anna married Obediah Hallett in 1885 (Uckfield 1885 December qtr Volume 2b Page 221); he was born at Rotherfield in 1861. The couple had no surviving children.

The 1891 census that Obediah was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and her 12 year old cousin Ellen Allcorn were living at Packham’s Hill, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Obediah was a farmer and he and his wife and his widowed mother in law were living at Town Row, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.4  ~~  Emily Hyder

Emily was born at Rotherfield in 1864 (Uckfield 1864 March qtr Volume 2b Page 99) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 14th February 1864. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that Emily was a pupil teacher and she was living with her parents at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. Emily married (possibly to Henry Edward Walker) in 1887 (Uckfield 1887 December qtr Volume 2b Page 235).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.5  ~~  William Hyder

William was born at Rotherfield in 1865 (Uckfield 1865 March qtr Volume 2b Page 93) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 12th March 1865. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that William was living with his parents (and no doubt working on the family farm) at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. The 1891 census records that William was an unmarried brick maker and he was living with his parents at Maynards gate, Rotherfield.

William married Ada H. (possibly Heathcote); she was born at Sheffield in 1862. William and Ada had at least two children – Jack (1897) and Ada (1899). The 1901 census records that William was a brick maker and he and his wife and their two children were living at Mount Pleasant Road, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.5.1  ~~  Jack Heathcote Hyder

Jack was born at Rotherfield in 1897 (Uckfield 1897 September qtr Volume 2b Page 117). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Mount Pleasant Road, Rotherfield.

Ada was born at Rotherfield in 1899 (Uckfield 1899 September qtr Volume 2b Page 122). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Mount Pleasant Road, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.6  ~~  Albert Hyder

Albert was born at Rotherfield in 1867 (Uckfield 1867 March qtr Volume 2b Page 99) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 10th February 1867. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that Albert was living with his parents (and no doubt working on the family farm) at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. Albert married his cousin Sophia L. Croucher in 1889 (Uckfield 1889 March qtr Volume 2b Page 195); she was born at Rotherfield in 1865, the daughter of Edmund Croucher and Betsy Allcorn. The couple do not appear to have had any surviving children.

The 1891 census records that Albert was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife were living next door to his parents at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Albert was a carrier’s carman and he and his wife and her widowed mother (Betsy Croucher) were living at Farningham Road, Rotherfield.

Sophia died in 1913 aged 48 years (Uckfield 1913 June qtr Volume 2b Page 157).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.7  ~~  Percy Hyder

Percy was born at Rotherfield on 14th October 1868 (Uckfield 1868 December qtr Volume 2b Page 114) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 10th January 1869. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. Percy married Grace Annie Burren in 1892 (Cranbrook 1892 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1427); she was born at Horsmonden in Kent in 1866. Percy and Grace had at least one child – Mervyn (1896).

The 1901 census records that Percy was a grocer and draper and he and his wife and their son were living at Flimwell, Ticehurst.

Mervyn was born at Ticehurst in 1896. The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Flimwell, Ticehurst.

Eva was born at Rotherfield on 19th November 1870 (Rotherfield 1870 December qtr Volume 2b Page 100) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 29th January 1871. The 1871 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with her family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. Eva married Amos Richards in 1893 (Uckfield 1893 June qtr Volume 2b Page 249); he was born at Frant in 1870. Amos and Eva had at least one child – George (1894).

The 1901 census records that Amos was a gardener and he and his wife and their son were living at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield.

George was born at Rotherfield in 1893 (Uckfield 1893 September qtr Volume 2b Page 125). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.9  ~~  May Hyder

May was born at Rotherfield on 11th February 1872 (Uckfield 1872 March qtr Volume 2b Page 115) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on2nd April 1872. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Warren Farm, Rotherfield.

May married James William Hammond in 1894 (Uckfield 1894 June qtr Volume 2b Page 219); he was born at Hull in Yorkshire in 1868. William and May had at least two children – Annie (1895) and Hugh (1899).

The 1901 census records that James was the manager of a gas works and he and his wife and their two young children were living at West Street, West Malling. Also living with them were May’s nephew and niece, Percy and Eva Harman.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.9.1  ~~  Annie Hyder Hammond

Annie was born at Arundel in 1895 (East Preston 1895 December qtr Volume 2b Page 351). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at West Street, West Malling.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.9.2  ~~  Hugh Hyder Hammond

Hugh was born at West Malling in 1899 (Malling 1899 December qtr Volume 2a Page 674). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at West Street, West Malling.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.3  ~~  Lucy Ann Allcorn

Lucy was born at Rotherfield in 1802 and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 22nd August 1802. Lucy married Jesse Killick in 1840 (Medway 1840 March qtr Volume 5 Page 338); he was born at Rotherfield in about 1812 and he was 10 years his wife’s junior. He was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 20th December 1812 the son of William Killick and Martha Foster and so he was almost certainly Lucy’s cousin.

Jesse and Lucy had at least three children – Emily (1840), Lewis (1842) and Austin (1844). The 1841 census records that Lucy and her daughter were staying with her parents at The Hall, Rotherfield. Meanwhile, Jesse had remained at their home at Weavering Street, Boxley (near Maidstone) where he had a farm.

The 1851 census records that Jesse was a farmer of 90 acres employing 7 men. He and his wife, their two sons, his elderly uncle (Anthony Killick who was born at Rotherfield in about 1775) and two servants were living at Weavering Street, Boxley. One of their servant was Lucy’s 35 year old cousin James Allcorn of Rotherfield.

The 1861 census records that Jesse was a farmer and he and his wife and their two sons were still living at Weavering Street, Boxley. The 1871 census records that Jesse was farming 80 acres and he and his two unmarried sons (who were farming a further 42.5 acres) were living in their farm house at Weavering Street, Boxley. Lucy was in London visiting friends or relatives. She was staying at Springfield Lodge, Junction Road, St Pancras.

Jesse died in 1876 aged 63 years (Hollingbourn 1876 March qtr Volume 2a Page 431). Lucy died in 1896 aged 94 years (Hollingbourn 1896 December qtr Volume 2a Page 470).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.3.1  ~~  Emily Walls Killick

Emily was born at Weavering Street, Boxley (near Maidstone) on 14th December 1840(Uckfield 1841 March qtr Volume 7 Page 502) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 21st February 1841. Emily died at Boxley in 1843 aged about 2 ½ years (Hollingbourn 1843 June qtr Volume 5 Page 205).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.3.2  ~~  Lewis Anthony Killick

Lewis was born at Boxley in 1842. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Weavering Street, Boxley. The 1861 census records that Lewis was an apprentice surgeon (?) and he was living with his parents at the same address.

The 1871 census records that Lewis was an unmarried farmer (30 acres) and he was still living with his parents at Boxley. Lewis married Emma Elizabeth Shadwell in 1873 (Kensington 1873 June qtr Volume 1a Page 135); she was born at London in 1842.

Lewis and Emma had at least two children – Lucy (1874) and Ernest (1875). The 1881 census records that Louis was farming 165 acres and employing 12 men and 3 boys. He and his wife, their two children and his brother in law (17 year old Henry Shadwell, a medical student of London) were living at Rats Castle, Langley.

There is no further trace of this family in England and it seems certain that they emigrated.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.3.2.1  ~~  Lucy Emma Killick

Lucy was born at Langley in 1874 (Hollingbourn 1874 June qtr Volume 2a Page 648). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Rats Castle, Langley.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.3.2.2  ~~  Ernest Anthony S. Killick

Ernest was born at Langley in 1875 (Hollingbourn 1875 June qtr Volume 2a Page 643). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Rats Castle, Langley.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.3.3  ~~  Austin Thomas Killick

Austin was born at Boxley in 1844 (Hollingbourn 1844 September qtr Volume 5 Page 263). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Weavering Street, Boxley. The 1861 census records that Austin was living with his parents at the same address.

The 1871 census records that Austin was an unmarried farmer (12.5 acres) and he was still living with his parents at Boxley. The 1881 census records

Austin married either Ellen Barnden or Frances Stonham in 1885 (Hollingbourn 1885 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1233). There is no surviving record of Austin or his family in the 1891 English census. Austin died in 1898 aged ‘55’ years (Hollingbourn 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 459).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4  ~~  George Allcorn

George was born at Rotherfield in 1804 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 29th November 1804. George married Sophia; she was born at Mayfield in 1803. George and Sophia had at least seven children – Sarah (1827), Charles (1829), Charlotte (1832), Ellen (1834), Sophia (1839), Elizabeth (1843) and George (1848). Their eldest child was born at Mayfield in 1827 and in 1829 the Rotherfield baptism register records that George was a farmer of Manor Gate.

The 1841 census records that George was a farmer and he and his wife and their three eldest surviving children were living at Rotherfield. The 1851 census records that George was a farmer of 5 acres and he and his wife and their three youngest surviving children were living at Sipses near Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield.

The 1861 census records that George was a farmer of 213 acres (his mother died in 1858 and he may have inherited more land from his father’s estate) employing 8 labourers and 2 boys. He and his wife and their two youngest children were still living at Sipses, Rotherfield.

The 1871 census records that George was a farmer of 240 acres employing 8 labourers and 2 boys. He and his wife and their youngest son were living at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that George was no longer farming. He was the assistant overseer and the collector of rates for the Parish of Rotherfield (however there is a rates book for 1842 in his name which shows that he had been fulfilling this function for many years). He and his wife were living alone at Sipses.

Sophia died at Maynards Gate (Sipses) on 2nd May 1883 aged 81 years (Uckfield 1883 June qtr Volume 2b Page 78) and she was buried at Rotherfield on 9th May 1883. George died at Jarvis Brook (Sipses) on 14th May 1888 aged 83 years (Uckfield 1883 June qtr Volume 2b Page 74). Their grave is marked by an inscribed stone which also records their two daughters Charlotte and Sophia who died in childhood.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.1  ~~  Sarah Ann Allcorn

Sarah was born at Mayfield in 1827 and she was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 11th February 1827. The 1841 census records that Sarah was living with her parents at Rotherfield. The 1851 census records that Sarah and her cousin Ansley were servants for Henry and Caroline Oddie at Tilgate House, Worth.

Sarah may have married William Barber or Thomas Botten in 1854 (Ticehurst 1854 June qtr Volume 2b Page 109). There is however no record of her under either surname in the any subsequent English census.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2  ~~  Charles Allcorn

Charles was born at Manor Gate, Rotherfield on 15th January 1829 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 1st March 1829. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Rotherfield.

Charles married Jane Hannah Latter in 1854 (Sevenoaks 1854 June qtr Volume 2a Page 519); she was born at Rotherfield in 1833. Charles and Jane had at least two children – Floria (1858) and Laura (1862). The 1861 census records that Charles was a grocer and a farmer of 20 acres. He and his wife and their daughter were living at Crowborough Cross near Rotherfield.

Jane died in 1868 aged 34 years (Uckfield 1868 June qtr Volume 2b Page 59). She was buried in Withyham churchyard on 27th April 1868. Charles subsequently married Amelia Paige at Rotherfield on 2nd May 1869 (Uckfield 1869 June qtr Volume 2b Page 181); she was born at Rotherfield in 1832. Charles and Amelia had no surviving children.

The 1871 census records that Charles was a grocer and draper and he and his wife and his two daughters were living at Crowborough. The 1881 census records that Charles was a wine and spirit merchant and a farmer of 24 acres. He and his wife and his two daughters were living at Crowborough Cross.

The 1891 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife and his spinster daughter were living at Court House, Beddingham.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2.1  ~~  Floria Allcorn

Flora was born at Withyham in 1858 (Uckfield 1858 March qtr Volume 2b Page 88). She was baptised at St Michael’s church, Withyham on 4th April 1858. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Crowborough Cross.

The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Crowborough. The 1881 census records that Floria was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Crowborough Cross. Floria married William Thomas Field Buss in 1882 (Lewes 1882 June qtr Volume 2b Page 263); he was born at Rotherfield in 1840 and he was one of several members of his family to marry into the Allcorn and related families.

William and Floria had at least five children – Jane (1883), Fanny (1885), Avice (1891), Charles (1895) and Delcy (1900). The 1891 census records that William was living on his own means and he and his wife and their three young children were living at The Downs, Rotherfield.

The 1901 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife and four of their children were still living at The Downs, Rotherfield.

Jane was born at Lewes in 1883 (Lewes 1883 June qtr Volume 2b Page 195). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at The Downs, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2.1.2  ~~  Fanny Field Buss

Fanny was born at Crowborough in 1885 (Uckfield 1895 March qtr Volume 2b Page 133). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at The Downs, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Fanny was living with her parents at The Downs, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2.1.3  ~~  Avice Floria Field Buss

Avice was born at Crowborough in early 1891 (Uckfield 1891 March qtr Volume 2b Page 127). The 1891 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with her family at The Downs, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at The Downs, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2.1.4  ~~  Charles Vesey Field Buss

Charles was born at Crowborough in 1895 (Uckfield 1895 March qtr Volume 2b Page 116). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at The Downs, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2.1.5  ~~  Delcy Field Buss

Delcy was born at Crowborough in 1900 (Uckfield 1900 March qtr Volume 2b Page 115). The 1901 census records that the toddler was living with her family at The Downs, Rotherfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.2.2  ~~  Laura Allcorn

Laura was born at Withyham in 1862 and she was baptised at St Michael’s church, Withyham on 30th March 1862. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Crowborough. The 1881 census records that Laura was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Crowborough Cross.

The 1891 census records that Laura was still unmarried and she was living with her parents at Court House, Beddingham.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.3  ~~  Charlotte Allcorn

Charlotte was born at Sipses, Rotherfield in 1832 and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 8th January 1832. Charlotte died on 14th February 1839 aged 7 years (Uckfield 1839 March qtr Volume 7 Page 332). She was buried at Rotherfield on 21st February 1839.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.4  ~~  Ellen Allcorn

Ellen was born at Sipses, Rotherfield in 1834 and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 9th March 1834. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family on their farm (probably Sipses) at Rotherfield. The 1851 census records that Ellen was still living with her parents at Sipses, Rotherfield.

Ellen married her cousin George Hyder at Holy Trinity church, Tunbridge Wells on 14th June 1858 (Tonbridge 1858 June qtr Volume 2a Page 569); George was born at Rotherfield in 1834 the son of John Exeter Hider and Anna Maria Allcorn and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 15th June 1834.

George and Ellen Hyder had at least nine children – Charlotte (1859), Ellen (1860), Ann (1862), Emily (1864), William (1865), Albert (1867), Percy (1868), Eva (1870) and May (1872). For further information on the fate of George and Ellen and their children see paragraph 1.2.2.3.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.5  ~~  Sophia Allcorn

Sophia was born at Sipses, Rotherfield on 1st August 1839 (Uckfield 1839 September qtr Volume 7 Page 450) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 15th September 1839. Sophia died at Sipses on 1st March 1840 (Uckfield 1840 March qtr Volume 7 Page 348) aged 7 months. She was buried at Rotherfield on 7th March 1840.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.6  ~~  Elizabeth Allcorn

Elizabeth, usually known as Betsy, was born at Sipses, Rotherfield on 28th August 1843 (Uckfield 1843 September Volume 7 Page 217) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 8th October 1843.  The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Sipses, Rotherfield.

The 1861 census records that Betsy was living with her parents on their farm at Rotherfield. Betsy married Edmund Croucher in 1862 (Tonbridge 1862 June qtr Volume 2a Page 651); he was born at Frittenden in Kent in 1843. Edmund and Betsy had at least three children – twins Charles and George (1862) and Sophia (1865).

The 1871 census records that Edmund was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that Edmund was a coal merchant and he and his wife and their three children were living at Forrest Prospect, Rotherfield. They had a 2 year old boy (Amil B. Friedberg of London) boarding with them at the time.

Edmund died in the 1880’s. The 1891 census records that Betsy was widowed and she and her unmarried son Charles were living back at Maynards Gate. The 1901 census records that Betsy was living with her daughter and son in law (Sophia and Albert Hyder) at Farningham Road, Rotherfield.

Betsy died at Rotherfield in 1908 aged 64 years (Uckfield 1908 March qtr Volume 2b Page 88).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.6.1  ~~  Charles George Croucher

Charles and his twin brother George were born at Rotherfield in 1862 (Uckfield 1862 December qtr Volume 2b Page 40). They were baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 26th November 1862. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that Charles was assisting his father (he was a coal merchant) and he was living with his parents at Forrest Prospect, Rotherfield. The 1891 census records that Charles was an unmarried carrier and he was living with his widowed mother at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield.

Charles probably married either Fanny Drusilla Bishop or Mary Ann Field in 1895 (Uckfield 1895 June qtr Volume 2b Page 241). Charles died in 1900 aged only 37 years (Rotherfield 1900 December qtr Volume 2b Page 67).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.6.2  ~~  George Charles Croucher

George and his twin brother Charles were born at Rotherfield in 1862 (Uckfield 1862 December qtr Volume 2b Page 41). They were baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 26th November 1862. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records that George was a butcher’s apprentice and he was living with his parents at Forrest Prospect, Rotherfield. George married Sarah Ann; she was born at East Grinstead in 1861. George and Sarah had at least six children – Annie (1886), Mabel (1888), George (1891), Arthur (1893), May (1895) and Albert (1899).

The 1891 census records that George was a carman and coal porter and he and his wife and their three young children were living at 87 Bexley Road, Erith in Kent. The 1901 census records that George was a general labourer and he and his wife and five of their children were still living at 87 Bexley Road, Erith.

Annie was born at East Grinstead in 1886. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 87 Bexley Road, Erith.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.6.3  ~~  Sophia Lucy Croucher

Sophia was born at Rotherfield in 1865 and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 12th February 1865. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that Sophia was living with her parents at Forrest Prospect, Rotherfield.

Sophia married her cousin Albert Hyder at Rotherfield in 1889 (Uckfield 1889 March qtr Volume 2b Page 195); he was born at Rotherfield in 1867 the son of George Hyder and Ellen Allcorn. The couple do not appear to have had any surviving children.

The 1891 census records that Albert was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife were living next door to his parents at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Albert was a carrier’s carman and he and his wife and her widowed mother were living at Farningham Road, Rotherfield.

Sophia died in 1913 aged 48 years (Uckfield 1913 June qtr Volume 2b Page 157).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.7  ~~  George Allcorn

George was born at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield on 26th October 1848 (Uckfield 1848 December qtr Volume 7 Page *25) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 3rd December 1848. The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Sipses, Rotherfield. The 1861 census records that the school boy was still living with his family at Sipses.

The 1871 census records that George was an unmarried grocer’s assistant and he was living with his parents at Maynards Gate. George married Ann Smith Bruce in 1874 (Brighton 1874 June qtr Volume 2b Page 352); she was born at Rotherfield in 1852. George and Ann had at least six children – Alice (1874), Louisa (1876), Ellen (1878), Anna (1879), Fanny (1880) and George (1881).

The 1881 census records that George was a wine and spirit merchant and he and his wife and their five children were living at High Street, East Grinstead. Tragedy struck the family in November 1884 (East Grinstead 1884 December qtr Volume 2b Page 91) when George died at the age of only 36 years. He was buried at East Grinstead on 1st December 1884.

Ann took over the running of the business. The family was living at Church Lane, East Grinstead in 1888 when her daughter Anna died. Then Ann herself died at her home at London Road, East Grinstead in 1890 aged only 38 years. She was buried at East Grinstead on 5th May 1890. After her death her surviving children were farmed out amongst their relatives.

Alice was born at Maynards Gate near Rotherfield on 3rd July 1874 (Uckfield 1874 September qtr Volume 2b Page 105). She was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 9th August 1874. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at High Street, East Grinstead.

The 1891 census records that Alice was a domestic servant for Joseph and Ann Collbran at Station Road, Bexley.

Louisa was born at Wrotham in Kent in 1876 (Malling 1876 June qtr Volume 2a Page 558) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 5th June 1876. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at High Street, East Grinstead.

Ellen was born at High Street, East Grinstead in 1878 (East Grinstead 1878 June qtr Volume 2b Page 139) and she was baptised at East Grinstead on 26th May 1878. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at High Street, East Grinstead.

The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her cousins Obediah and Annie Hallett at Packham’s Hill, Rotherfield.

Anna was born at High Street, East Grinstead in 1879 (East Grinstead 1879 September qtr Volume 2b Page 141) and she was baptised at East Grinstead on 26th October 1879. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at High Street, East Grinstead.

Anna died at Church Lane, East Grinstead in 1888 aged 9 years (East Grinstead 1888 September qtr Volume 2b Page 75) and she was buried at East Grinstead on 26th July 1888.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.7.5  ~~  Fanny Allcorn

Fanny was born at High Street, East Grinstead in 1880 (East Grinstead 1880 September qtr Volume 2b Page 154) and she was baptised at East Grinstead on 25th July 1880. The 1881 census records that the 9 month old infant was living with her family at High Street, East Grinstead.

The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her aunt and uncle (George and May Goldsmith) at Muddler Green, Chiddingley. The 1901 census records that Fanny was a house maid for Decimus (a school master) and Adeline Herridge at 23 The Avenue, Eastbourne.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.4.7.6  ~~  George Allcorn

George was born at High Street, East Grinstead in 1881 and he was baptised at East Grinstead on 2nd October 1881. He was orphaned at a very early age. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his aunt and uncle (George and May Goldsmith) at Muddler Green, Chiddingley.

The 1901 census records that George was a cattleman on Caroline Hilton’s farm at Lower Willingden near Eastbourne.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5  ~~  Ann Allcorn

Ann was born at Rotherfield in 1807 and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 22nd March 1807. Ann married Thomas Bridger at St Margaret’s church, Buxted on 14th April 1828; he was the son of Edward Bridger and Sarah Coleman and he was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 14th April 1805.

Thomas and Ann had at least nine children – Edward (1828), Mary (1830), Elizabeth (1832), Thomas (1834), Sarah (1835), Emily (1837), Harriett (1839), Daniel (1841) and Peter (1844). In the late 1820’s Thomas was a carpenter and he and his wife were living with her parents at The Hall, Rotherfield.

The 1841 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife, their seven children and his widowed mother Sarah were living at Pages Farm, Mayfield. The 1851 census records that Thomas was a farmer of 240 acres and he employed 7 men. He and his wife, their six children and his widowed mother were still living at Pages Farm, Mayfield. They also had a 21 year old agricultural labourer living wioth them. His name was William Hall and he is also a relative of the author through the Turner family of Mayfield (see Part 4).

The 1861 census records that Thomas was now farming 112 acres at Pages Farm. He now had only his wife, their son Daniel and a servant Charles Piper of Mayfield who is also a relative of the author. Ann died in the 1860’s. Thomas subsequently married Ann M.; she was born at Waldron in 1837 and therefore more than 30 years his junior.

Thomas and his second wife had at least two children – Catherine (1866) and John (1868). The 1871 census records that Thomas was a farmer of 155 acres and he and his wife and their two children were living at Downford House, Mayfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.1  ~~  Edward William Bridger

Edward was born at Mayfield on 26th September 1828 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 2nd November 1828. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Pages Farm, Mayfield. The 1851 census records that Edward was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was still living with his parents at Pages Farm.

Edward married Mary Ann Taylor in 1855 (Uckfield 1855 March qtr Volume 2b Page 93); she was the daughter of Thomas Taylor Wickens and Hannah Ashby and she was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 24th August 1828. Edward and Mary had at least seven children – Herbert (1856), Alice (1858), Sarah (1860), Clara (1862), Edward (1865), Clement (1867) and Mary (1871).

The 1861 census records that Edward was a gamekeeper and he and his wife and their three young children were living at Gravel Hill, Rotherfield. The 1871 census records that Edward was a game keeper and he and his wife and their seven children were living at Deanland, Ripe (near Hailsham).

The 1881 census records that Edward was still a game keeper and he and his wife and their three youngest children were living at Nash Street, Chiddingley. Edward is recorded twice in the 1891 census. Firstly he is recorded as a guest at the Grenadier Inn, Hailsham and secondly as a huntsman living with his wife, two sons and a grandson at Nash Street, Chiddingley.

The 1901 census records that Edward was a jobber on a farm and Mary ran a poultry farm. The couple, their unmarried son and their grandson were still living at Chiddingley.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.1.1  ~~  Herbert Richard Bridger

Herbert was born at Mayfield in 1856 (Uckfield 1855 December qtr Volume 2b Page 80) and he was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 2nd February 1856. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Gravel Hill, Rotherfield.

The 1871 census records that Herbert was living with his parents at Deanland, Ripe. Herbert moved to Eastbourne in the 1870’s where he married and raised a very large family. He married Joanna Jane Hackmore in 1878 (Eastbourne 1878 September qtr Volume 2b Page 113); she was born at Fairlight near Hastings in 1858.

Herbert and Joanna had at least thirteen children – Herbert (1879), Edward (1880), Daniel (1882), Joanna (1884), Thomas (1885), Harry (1886), Fred (1888), Mary (1891), Nellie (1893), Emily (1895), Edith (1897), David (1899) and Stanley (1900).

The 1881 census records that Herbert was a bricklayer and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 1 Rose Terrace, Eastbourne. The 1891 census records that Herbert was a bricklayer and he and his wife and seven of their children (aged under 10 years) were living at 1 Rose Terrace, Bradford Street, Eastbourne.

The 1901 census records that Herbert was still a bricklayer and he and his wife and eight of their children were living at 11 Bradford Street, Eastbourne.

Herbert was born at Eastbourne in 1879 (Eastbourne 1879 March qtr Volume 2b Page 84). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 1 Rose Terrace, Eastbourne. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his paternal grandparents at Nash Street, Chiddingley.

The 1901 census records that Herbert was an unmarried bricklayer and he was still living with his elderly grandparents at Nash Street, Chiddingley.

Alice was born at Mayfield in 1858 (Uckfield 1858 March qtr Volume 2b Page 85) and she was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 17th February 1858. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Gravel Hill, Rotherfield.

The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Deanland, Ripe. Alice have married Thomas Guy in 1880 (Hailsham 1880 December qtr Volume 2b Page 165); he was born at Chalvington in 1854.

The 1881 census records that Thomas was a brickmaker and he and his wife were living alone at Blackland Cottage, Selmeston. Thomas and Alice had at least two children – Walter (1883) and Alice (1888). Alice died, almost certainly from complications arising from childbirth, in late December 1888 at the age of only 31 years (Hailsham 1888 December qtr Volume 2b Page 57).

It appears that Alice’s younger sister Sarah was living with her brother in law and his children to assist them. He seems to have got Sarah pregnant within six months of her sister’s death – William (1890). Thomas and Sarah married in early 1891 but they went to another town, where they probably weren’t known, for the ceremony (Tonbridge 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 865).

Thomas and Sarah had at least five more children – Frances (1893), Lilly (1895), Thomas (1896), James (1898) and Florence (1899). See the following paragraph for more information on this family.

Walter was born at Hailsham in 1883 (Hailsham September qtr Volume 2b Page 95). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Chiddingley. The 1901 census records that Walter was ‘feeble-minded’ and he was living with his father and stepmother/aunt at Stoney Farm, Selmeston.

Alice was born in late December 1888 (Hailsham 1889 March qtr Volume 2b Page 64) and her mother probably died giving birth to her. Alice did not survive her mother for very long (Hailsham 1899 March qtr Volume 2b Page 64).

Sarah was born at Mayfield in 1860 (Uckfield 1860 March qtr Volume 2b Page 95) and she was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 5th March 1860. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Gravel Hill, Rotherfield.

The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Deanland, Ripe. At the time of her elder sister’s death in late 1888, Sarah went to live with her widowed brother in law Thomas Guy, probably to assist in the raising of her nephew. However Sarah was pregnant to her brother in law within about 6 months – William (1890).

Thomas and Sarah married in early 1891 but they went to another town, where they probably weren’t known, for the ceremony (Tonbridge 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 865). Thomas and Sarah had at least five more children – Frances (1893), Lilly (1895), Thomas (1896), James (1898) and Florence (1899).

The 1891 census records that Clara was a general servant for Ernest and Elizabeth Hawkins who ran a preparatory boarding school at Sussex Gardens, Eastbourne. The 1901 census records that Clara was an unmarried housekeeper for Jacob Smith, a hackney carriage driver, who was born at Maresfield in 1857. Clara and her widowed employer were living at 35 Lower Road, Eastbourne.

The 1901 census records that Clement was an unmarried poultry farmer and he was still living with his parents at the same address in Chiddingley.

Elizabeth was born at Mayfield in 1832 and she was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 19th February 1832. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Pages Farm, Mayfield. The 1851 census records that Elizabeth was still living with her parents at Pages Farm.

Elizabeth married William Buss at Mayfield on 19th July 1854 (Uckfield 1854 September qtr Volume 2b Page 131); he was born at Mayfield in 1831. William and Elizabeth had at least eight children – Benjamin (1854), William (1856), Samuel (1857), Daniel (1859), Victoria (1861), Eliza (1862), John (1865) and Thomas (1867).

The 1861 census records that William was farming 42 acres and he and his wife and their five very young children were living on their farm at Mayfield. William lost his farm during the 1860’s. The 1871 census records that William was a huntsman for a ‘harrier subscription pack’ and he and his wife and seven of their children were living at Back Lane, Mayfield.

The 1881 census records that William was still a huntsman for the harrier pack and he and his wife and four of their children were living at Back Lane, Mayfield. Elizabeth died in 1886 aged 54 years (Uckfield 1886 September qtr Volume 2b Page 73).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.3.1  ~~  Benjamin Thomas Buss

Benjamin was born at Mayfield in 1854 (Uckfield 1854 December qtr Volume 2b Page 77). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family on their farm at Mayfield. At the time of the 1871 census Benjamin was away from home and probably working on another farm.

Benjamin married Elizabeth Mary Brown in 1883 (Dover 1883 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1379); she was born at Dover in 1858. Benjamin and Elizabeth had at least three children all of whom were given grand names – James (1885), Edward (1888) and Charles (1890).

The 1891 census records that Benjamin was a draper’s assistant and he and his wife and their three young sons were living at Oak Street, Lechlade in Berkshire.

James was born at Dover in 1885 (Dover 1885 September qtr Volume 2a Page 965). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Oak Street, Lechlade. James married either Marion Battishill or Marie Louisa Keeler in 1908 (Dover 1908 December qtr Volume 2a Page 2275).

Edward was born at Cambridge in 1888 (Cambridge 1888 December qtr Volume 3b Page 463). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Oak Street, Lechlade.

Charles was born at Cambridge in 1890 (Cambridge 1890 March qtr Volume 3b Page 475). The 1891 census records that the toddler was living with his family at Oak Street, Lechlade.

William was born at Mayfield in 1856 (Uckfield 1856 June qtr Volume 2b Page 82). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family on their farm at Mayfield. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Back Lane, Mayfield.

The 1881 census records that William was an unmarried brewer’s labourer and he was lodging with John and Sarah Howland at 94 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells. William married either Julie Donahue or Martha Short later that year (Tonbridge 1881 June qtr Volume 2a Page 992).

William died in 1894 aged only 37 years (Maidstone 1894 December qtr Volume 2a Page 400).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.3.3  ~~  Samuel Buss

Samuel was born at Mayfield in 1857 (Uckfield 1857 September qtr Volume 2b Page 90). The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family on their farm at Mayfield. The 1871 census records that Samuel was an errand boy and he was living with his family at Back Lane, Mayfield.

The 1881 census records that Samuel was an unmarried saddler and he was living with his parents at Back Lane, Mayfield. Samuel married Flora Newington in 1892 (Uckfield 1892 December qtr Volume 2b Page 273); she was born at Wadhurst in 1852. The couple do not appear to have had any children.

The 1901 census records that Samuel was a watchmaker working for himself at home. He and his wife were living alone at Cross in Hand, Waldron. Samuel died in 1911 aged 53 years (Uckfield 1911 September qtr Volume 2b Page 159).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.3.4  ~~  Daniel Buss

Daniel was born at Mayfield in 1859 (Uckfield 1859 ? qtr Volume 2b Page 96). The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family on their farm at Mayfield. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Back Lane, Mayfield.

Daniel married Emily Awcock in 1880 (Tonbridge 1880 March qtr Volume 2a Page 746); she was born at Lewes in 1861. Daniel and Emily had at least four children – Joseph (1881), Ernest (1882), Sidney (1884) and Norman (1890). The 1891 census records that Daniel was a butcher and he and his wife and their four sons were living at 29 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells.

The 1901 census records that Daniel was running his own butcher’s shop and he and his wife and their two youngest surviving sons were living at 35 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells. Daniel died in 1906 aged only 47 years (Tonbridge 1906 June qtr Volume 2b Page 443).

Joseph was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1881 (Tonbridge 1881 March qtr Volume 2a Page 652). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 29 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells.

Ernest was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1882 (Tonbridge 1882 December qtr Volume 2a Page 646). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 29 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells.

Sydney was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1884 (Tonbridge 1884 September qtr Volume 2a Page 648). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 29 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells. The 1901 census records that Sydney was a butcher’s assistant and he was living with his parents at 35 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells.

Norman was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1890 (Tonbridge 1890 June qtr Volume 2a Page 651). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 29 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 35 Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.3.5  ~~  Victoria Buss

Victoria was born at Mayfield in 1861 (Uckfield 1861 March qtr Volume 2b Page 87). The 1861 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with her family on their farm at Mayfield. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Back Lane, Mayfield.

The 1881 census records that Victoria was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Back Lane, Mayfield.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.5.3.6  ~~  Eliza Buss

Eliza was born at Mayfield in 1862 (Uckfield 1862 June qtr Volume 2b Page 89). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Back Lane, Mayfield. Eliza married Amos Luck in 1882 (Uckfield 1882 June qtr Volume 2b Page 193); he was born at Mayfield in 1861.

Amos and Eliza had at least eight children – Amos (1883), William (1884), Mary 91887), John (1889), Sarah (1891), Ernest (1894), Elizabeth (1896) and Stephen (1899). The 1891 census records that Amos was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their four young children were living at The School House, Mayfield.

The 1901 census records that Amos was a farm bailiff and he and his wife and their eight children were living at Cranesden Cottage, Mayfield.
