The 1861 census records that James was a labourer and he and his wife (who was working as a laundress) and her elderly mother were living at Weavering Street. It is quite likely that James was still working for Jesse Killick.

The 1871 and 1881 census both record that James was an agricultural labourer and Grace was a laundress. The couple were living alone at Weavering Street, Boxley. James died at Boxley in 1890 aged 75 years (Hollingbourn 1890 March qtr Volume 2a Page 497). Grace died at Boxley in 1893 aged 78 years (Hollingbourn 1893 March qtr Volume 2a Page 515).

William was born at Gilhams Birch, Rotherfield on 4th March 1817 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 16th March 1817. William married Maria Parker at Speldhurst on 25th November 1839; she was born at Boarshead, Rotherfield on 19th December 1822 the daughter of John Parker and Hannah Dadswell. Maria was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 2nd February 1823.

The 1841 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his young wife and son were living at Ceaslet House, Mottings Hill near Rotherfield.

The 1851 census records that Maria was head of the household and it is believed that William may have been in prison at the time or deserted his family (there is a gap of 4 years between the birth of his 5th and 6th children). Maria is recorded as a pauper and an agricultural labourer and she, five of her children and her elderly mother were living at Hamsell Bridge, Rotherfield.

The 1861 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Leechpit, Rotherfield. Mary’s very elderly mother was still living with them. The 1871 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and four of their children were living in a cottage near the Park Corner Inn, Rotherham.

During the 1870’s William was awarded 5th prize in the best managed cottage garden section of the Tunbridge Wells Horticultural Society’s annual competition. The 1881 census records that William was a general labourer and he and his wife and three of their grandchildren (10 year old Louisa Allcorn, 8 year old George Allcorn and 7 year old Myra Swift Rushman were living at Birchden, Groombridge. It is believed that William was working in the kitchen garden at Eridge Castle at the time.

William suffered from pleurisy in later life and this required that his lungs were drained of fluid from time to time. This together with a weak heart caused his death at Birchden on 30th January 1888 (Uckfield 1888 March qtr Volume 2b Page 83) aged 70 years. He was buried at Eridge Green on 4th February 1888.

Maria had a stroke in about 1880 which left her paralysed until her death. The 1891 census records that Maria and her two grandchildren (George and Louisa Allcorn) were living with her daughter and son in law (Emily and David Bassett) at Birchden, Rotherfield.

Maria died at Birchden on 31st January 1893 (Uckfield 18923 March qtr Volume 2b Page 88) aged 70 years. She was buried at Eridge Green with her husband on 4th February 1893. Their grave is unmarked.

William was born at Mottings Hill on 14th February 1840 (Uckfield 1840 March qtr Volume 7 Page 467) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 8th March 1840. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Ceaslet House, Mottings Hill.

The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Hamsell Bridge, Rotherfield. In early 1853, when his father is thought to have left his family destitute, William joined the Army at the age of 13 years (he falsified his age by 6 months).

William firstly served in the Artillery for nearly 7 years during which time he saw active service during the Crimean War (1854-1856). He received two campaign medals from England’s allies in that war – Turkey and France. William then enlisted in the 12th Regiment of Lancers as a Trooper (#264) at Maidstone in September 1859. The 1861 census records that William was a Private in the 12th Royal Lancers and he and his regiment were in barracks at Gate Fulford, Yorkshire.

William married Jane Lipton at St Matthew’s church, Aston in Warwickshire on 7th November 1864; she was born at Birmingham in 1846 the daughter of John Lipton a tailor. The couple had no children during the first 20 years of their marriage and it may be that the daughters they had in the 1880’s were actually adopted.

The 1871 census records that William was still with the 12th Royal Lancers and he was in barracks at Aldershot. In the meantime his wife Jane was a tailoress and she was lodging with Alfred and Susannah Strickland at 1 Cannon Row, Aldershot.

William was discharged from the Army at Leeds on 28th December 1872 after 12 years service. Army records provide his physical description – 5’ 7” tall, fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. The 1881 census records that William was a coachman and he and his wife were living at Yardley, Worcestershire. Jane’s 13 year old niece Hannah Upton was living with them at the time.

William and Jane finally had children in the 1880s (it seems unlikely that the couple would start having children at this stage of their lives at it seems plausible that the children may have been adopted or fathered by someone else. The couple eventually had at least two children – Lily (1884) and Daisy (1888).

The 1891 census records that William was a coachman and he and his wife and their two young daughters were living at 2 Springfield Drive, Kings Norton in Worcestershire. The 1901 census records that William was a coachman and Jane was a dressmaker. The elderly couple and their two daughters were living at Dingle Cottage, Bill Lane, Solihull in Warwickshire.

At the time of his daughter’s marriage in 1905 William was described as a gardener (he was probably semi-retired). William died on 17th January 1911 (Solihull 1911 March qtr Volume 6d Page 371) aged 70 years. Jane died on 6th April 1932 aged 86 years.
