1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.8.2  ~~  William Allcorn

William was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1848 (Tonbridge 1848 March qtr Volume 5 Page 551). The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Down Lane, Tunbridge Wells. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

Walter married Ellen Waghorn in 1869 (Tonbridge 1869 June qtr Volume 2a Page 803); she was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1848. William and Ellen had at least one child – Augusta (1870). The 1871 census records that William was a gardener and Ellen was a laundress. The young couple and their infant daughter were living at Tunbridge Wells.

There is no further sign of William or his family in any subsequent English census.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.8.2.1  ~~  Augusta Maud Allcorn

Augusta was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1870 (Tonbridge 1870 June qtr Volume 2a Page 537). The 1871 census records that the 11 month old infant was living with her family at Tunbridge Wells.

Augusta was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1850. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Down Lane, Tunbridge Wells. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

The 1871 census records that Augusta was assisting her aunt (Elizabeth Shawill) at Alexandra Terrace, Tonbridge. Augusta married Walter Holdoway in 1873 (Tonbridge 1873 December qtr Volume 2a Page 925); he was born at Bridgewater, Somerset in 1851. The couple had no surviving children.

The 1881 census records that Walter was a ‘fancy dealer’ and he and his wife and her sister Elizabeth were living at 33 George Street, Hastings. The 1901 census records that Walter was a general contractor and he and his wife and her sister were living at Beaufort House, Strood Road, hastings.

Ann was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1853 (Tonbridge 1853 March qtr Volume 2a Page 362). The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that Annie was living with her parents at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

The 1881 census records that Annie was an unmarried laundress and she was living with her parents at 4 Speldhurst Road, Tonbridge.

Herbert was born at Southborough, Tunbridge Wells in 1855 (Tonbridge 1855 December qtr Volume 2a Page 340). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that Herbert was living with his parents at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

The 1881 census records that Herbert was an unmarried gardener and he was living with his parents at 4 Speldhurst Road, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that Herbert was a gardener and florist and he was living with his parents at 7 Speldhurst Road, Tunbridge Wells.

Herbert married Clara; she was born at Knaphill in 1867. Herbert and Clara had at least three children – Herbert (1896), Charles (1898) and Annie (1900). The 1901 census records that Herbert was a general carman’s manager and he and his wife and their three children were living at 10 Manor Road, Hastings.

Herbert was born at Hastings in 1896 (Hastings 1896 March qtr Volume 2b Page 30). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 10 Manor Road, Hastings.

Annie was born at Hastings in 1900 (Hastings 1900 June qtr Volume 2b Page 20). The 1901 census records that the toddler was living with her family at 10 Manor Road, Hastings.

Elizabeth was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1859 (Tonbridge 1859 June qtr Volume 2b Page 389). The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

The 1881 census records that Elizabeth (but here called Mary) was unmarried and she was living with her sister Augusta Holdoway and her husband Walter at 33 George Street, Hastings. The 1891 census records that Elizabeth was still a spinster (but with an incorrect age of 37 years) and she was still living with her sister Augusta at Beaufort House, Strood Road, Hastings.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.8.7  ~~  Charles Thomas Allcorn

Charles was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1863. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1881 census records that Charles was a gardener and he was living with his parents at 4 Speldhurst Road, Tonbridge. There is no record of Charles in the 1881 or 1891 census and he may have emigrated before returning to England in the early 1890s.

Charles married Caroline; she was born at Walthamstow, Essex in 1867. Charles and Caroline had at least three children – Walter (1892), Charles (1894) and Augusta (1901). The 1901 census records that Charles was a fruiterer and shop keeper and he and his wife and their three children were living at 52 London Road, Southborough.

Walter was born at Hastings in 1892 (Hastings 1892 June qtr Volume 2b Page 43). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 52 London Road, Southborough.

Charles was born at Hastings in 1894 (Hastings 1894 September qtr Volume 2b Page 32). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 52 London Road, Southborough.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.8.7.3  ~~  Augusta Elizabeth Allcorn

Augusta was born at Southborough in late March 1901 (Tonbridge 1901 June qtr Volume 2a Page 767). The 1901 census records that the 10 day old infant was living with her family at 52 London Road, Southborough.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.9   ~~  George Allcorn

George was born at Rotherfield on 18th February 1820 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 30th March 1820. George married Ann – possibly in 1844 (Tonbridge 1844 March qtr Volume 5 Page 457); she was born at Tonbridge in 1822. George and Ann probably had one son (he may have been born prior to Ann’s marriage) – Frederick (1842).

The 1851 census records that George was a labourer and Ann was a laundress and the couple and their son were living at Bassett’s Houses, Tonbridge. Ann must have died and Frederick disappeared from the scene Uckfield . George subsequently married Mary Roberts at Mayfield on 17th October 1852 (Uckfield 1852 December qtr Volume 2b Page 149); she was born in about 1825 and she had a daughter who was born in 1850.

The 1861 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and her daughter were living at Pell Green, Wadhurst. The 1871 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife were living alone at Pool and Pitt, Wadhurst.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10  ~~  Herbert Allcorn

Herbert was born at Gilhams Birch, Rotherfield on 7th October 1821 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 11th November 1821. Herbert married Ann Pullin in 1843 (Henley 1843 December qtr Volume 16 Page 188); she was born at Castle Combe, Wiltshire in 1821. Herbert and Ann had at least four children – Rachel (1844), William (1847), Hannah (1849) and Alfred (1863).

Herbert moved his family from Wiltshire to London in the mid 1840’s. The 1851 census records that William (here indexed as Robert Allcorn) was a groom and he and his wife and their three young children were living at 2 Coventry Stables, St George Hanover Square in central London. Ann’s younger brother William was visiting them at the time.

The 1861 census records that Herbert was a licensed victualler and he and his wife and their two daughters were living at 31 Great St Andrew Street, St Giles in London. Also living with them were Ann’s niece (Ann Andrews) and nephew (Richard Pullen).

The 1871 census records that Herbert was a publican and he and his wife and three of their children were living at “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field. The 1881 census records that Herbert was a landowner and he and his wife and their youngest son were living at St Pauls Street, Langley Burrell in Wiltshire (near Chippenham).

The 1891 census records that Herbert was living off his own means and he and his wife were living at St Paul’s Street, Langley Burrell. Their married daughter Hannah Anstey was staying with them. Herbert died in 1899 aged 78 years (Chippenham 1899 December qtr Volume 5a page 49).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.1  ~~  Rachel Allcorn

Rachel was born at Castle Combe in 1844 but there is no surviving record of her birth registration. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 2 Coventry Stables, St George Hanover Square. The 1861 census records that Rachel was living with her parents at 31 Great St Andrew Street, St Giles.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.2  ~~  William Herbert Allcorn

William was born at Hungerford, Berkshire in 1847 (Hungerford 1847 September qtr Volume 6 Page 175). The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 2 Coventry Stables, St George Hanover Square.

The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his uncle and aunt (William and Jane Pullin) at the Market Place, Castle Combe. The 1871 census records that William was assisting his father in the their pub at “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field.

William married Mary; she was born at Wapping in 1848. William and Mary had at least two children – Herbert (1874) and Mary (1879). The 1881 census records that William was a publican and he and his wife and their two children were living at his father’s old pub “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field.

The 1891 census records that William was still a publican and he and his wife and their two children were living at 20 Upper St Martins Lane, St Martins in the Fields.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.2.1  ~~  Herbert Samuel Allcorn

Herbert was born at Bloomsbury in 1874 (St Giles 1874 March qtr Volume 1b Page 590). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field. The 1891 census records that Herbert was helping his father and he was living with his parents at 20 Upper St Martins Lane, St Martins in the Fields.

Herbert married Mary; she was born at Lincoln in 1876. The 1901 census records that Herbert was a licensed victualler and he and his wife were living at 53 Lower Thames Street, All Hallows Barking.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.2.2  ~~  Mary Helen Allcorn

Mary, known as Helen or Nellie, was born at Bloomsbury in 1879 (St Giles 1879 March qtr Volume 1b Page 647). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 20 Upper St Martins Lane, St Martins in the Fields.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.3  ~~  Hannah Allcorn

Hannah was born at Westminster in 1849 (St George Hanover Square 1849 March qtr Volume 1 Page 44). The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 2 Coventry Stables, St George Hanover Square. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 31 Great St Andrew Street, St Giles.

The 1871 census records that Hannah was unmarried and she was living with her parents at “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field. Hannah married George Anstey within the next year; he was born at Doynton, Gloucestershire in 1850.

George and Hannah had at least two children – Herbert (1872) and Florence (1878). The 1881 census records that George was farming 113 acres. He and his wife and their two children were living at Moor Barton Farm, Corsham in Wiltshire.

The 1891 census records that Hannah was married and she was staying with her parents at St Paul’s Street, Langley Burrow. There is a possibility that the marriage had temporarily broken down. At the same time George was still a farmer and he and their two children and his housekeeper (Elizabeth Young a 56 year old widow) were living on his farm at Moor Barton Farm, Corsham.

The 1901 census records that George was still a farmer and he and his wife and their unmarried daughter were still living at Moor Barton Farm, Corsham.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.3.1  ~~  Herbert George Anstey

Herbert was born at Keynsham in Somerset in 1872 (Keynsham 1872 September qtr Volume 5c Page 684). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Moor Barton Farm, Corsham. The 1891 census records that Herbert was living with his father (and probably assisting him) on  their farm at Corsham.

Hebert may have died in the north of England a few months later (Cockermouth 1891 September qtr Volume 10b Page 352) aged only 19 years.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.3.2  ~~  Florence A. Anstey

Florence was born at Castle Combe in 1878. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Moor Barton Farm, Corsham. The 1891 census records that the school girl was still living with her family at Moor Barton Farm.

The 1901 census records that Florence was still living with her parents on their farm at Corsham.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.4  ~~  Alfred T. Allcorn

Alfred was born at St Giles in the Field, London in 1863. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at “The George”, 31 Great St Andrews Street, St Giles in the Field. The 1881 census records that Alfred was a pupil teacher and he was living with his parents at St Pauls Street, Langley Burrell.

Alfred married Agnes M. Barnard; she was born at Canterbury in 1862. Alfred and Agnes had at least one child – Elsie (1890). The 1891 census records that Alfred was an accountant for a public company and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living at 5 Seneca Road, Croydon. Agnes’ 18 year old sister Edith Barnard was visiting them at the time.

The 1901 census records that Alfred was a chief clerk and he and his wife and their daughter were living at 16 Elliott Road, Croydon.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.10.4.1  ~~  Elsie Maud Allcorn

Elsie was born at Thornton Heath in 1890 (Chelsea 1890 December qtr Volume 1a Page 298). The 1891 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at 5 Seneca Road, Croydon. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 16 Elliott Road, Croydon.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11  ~~  Phoebe Allcorn

Phoebe was born at Gilhams Birch, Rotherfield on 26th January 1823 and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 9th March 1823. The 1841 census records that Phoebe was a servant girl for her uncle and aunt (William and Elizabeth Allcorn) at The Hall, Rotherfield.

Phoebe married Charles John Kates in the mid 1840’s; he was born at Chelsea in London in about 1822. Charles and Phoebe had at least twelve children – Margaret (1846), Phoebe (1848), Eliza (1850), Mary (1852), Charles (1854), Edward (1856), Edwin (1858), Lucy (1860), Lewis (1862), Ann (1863), William (1865) and Alice (1868).

The 1851 census records that Charles was a farm labourer and Phoebe was a laundress. The couple and their three young daughters were living at Frant Road, Frant. 11 year old Elizabeth patching of Rotherfield was viviting them at the time. Charles moved his family a few miles in to Kent in about 1856.

The couple’s family continued to grow into the typical huge Victorian family of the 1860s. The 1861 census records that Charles was a gardener and Phoebe was a laundress. The couple and their seven children were living at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge, close to Phoebe’s elder brother Obediah Allcorn.

The 1871 census records that Charles was a market gardener and he and his wife and ten of their children were living at Edward Street, Tonbridge. The 1881 census records that Charles was a gardener and Phoebe was a laundress. The couple and two of their sons were living at 17 Edward Street, Tonbridge. They were also sharing the house with the family of their married daughter Phoebe Ames. Charles died later that year aged ‘64’ years (Tonbridge 1881 September qtr Volume 2a Page 309).

The 1891 census records that Phoebe was a widowed laundress and she and her spinster daughter Annie were living at 11 Bedford Road, Tonbridge. The 1901 census records that Phoebe was living with the family of her youngest daughter Alice Muggeridge at 12 Taylor Street, Southborough.

Phoebe died in 1909 aged ‘82’ years (Tonbridge 1909 March qtr Volume 2a Page 579).

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.1  ~~  Margaret Kates

Margaret was born at Rotherfield in 1846. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Frant Road, Frant. Margaret is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1861 census and she had probably gone into service.

Margaret married Edward (Marcus) Maynard in 1866 (Tonbridge 1866 September qtr Volume 2a Page 799); he was born at Mayfield in 1847. Edward and Margaret had at least six children – Charles (1867), Arthur (1870), Agnes (1872), John (1873), Annie (1875) and Alice (1877).

The 1871 census records that Edward (Marcus) was a stoker in the gas works and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 5 Alfred Terrace, Tonbridge. The 1881 census records that Margaret and her six children were living at Meadow Road, Tonbridge. Edward was away at the time.

The 1891 census records that Edward was a gas works labourer and he and his wife and three of their children were living at 10 Upper Hall Street, Camberwell.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.1.1  ~~  Charles Henry Maynard

Charles was born at Southborough in 1867 (Tonbridge 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 529). The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 5 Alfred Terrace, Tonbridge.The 1881 census records that Charles was a brickmaker and he was living with his parents at Meadow Road, Tonbridge.

Charles married Ruth; she was born at Lambeth in 1866. Charles and Ruth had at least four children – Charles (1890), Florence (1894), Maud (1896) and Ethel (1900). The 1891 census records that Charles was a shoeing smith and he and his wife and their infant son were living at 64 Bennethouse Road, Camberwell.

The 1901 census records that Charles (now calling himself Edward Maynard – his father’s name) was a gas stoker and he and his wife and three of their children were living at Lower Park, Camberwell.

Charles was born at Peckham in late 1890. The 1891 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with his family at 64 Bennethouse Road, Camberwell. Charles was not living with his family at the time of the 1901 census and he may have died in infancy.

Arthur was born at Southborough in 1870 (Tonbridge 1870 June qtr Volume 2a Page 530). The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 5 Alfred Terrace, Tonbridge. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Meadow Road, Tonbridge.

Arthur married Susan; she was born at Lambeth in 1867. Arthur and Susan had at least four children – Catherine (1890), Edward (1892), Arthur (1894) and Elsie (1898). The 1891 census records that Arthur was a ‘hammer smith’ and he and his wife and their infant daughter were living near his brother Charles at 70 Bennethouse Road, Camberwell.

The 1901 census records that Arthur worked with a stationary engine and he and his wife and their four children were living at 28 Elcot Avenue, Camberwell.

Catherine was born at Peckham in 1890. The 1891 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with his family at 70 Bennethouse Road, Camberwell. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 28 Elcot Avenue, Camberwell.

John, known as Jack, was born at Tonbridge in 1873 (Tonbridge 1873 December qtr Volume 2a Page 548). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Meadow Road, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that Jack was a gas works labourer and he was living with his parents at 10 Upper Hall Street, Camberwell.

Annie was born at Tonbridge in 1875 (Tonbridge 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 561). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Meadow Road, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that Annie was living with her parents at 10 Upper Hall Street, Camberwell.

Alice was born at Tonbridge in 1877 (Tonbridge 1877 December qtr Volume 2a Page 607). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Meadow Road, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 10 Upper Hall Street, Camberwell.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.2  ~~  Phoebe Kates

Phoebe was born at Frant in 1848 (Ticehurst 1848 March qtr Volume 7 Page 504). The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Frant Road, Frant. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

The 1871 census records that Phoebe was unmarried and she was living with her parents (and probably helping her mother to raise her huge brood) at Edward Street, Tonbridge. Phoebe married Frederick Ames in 1873 (West Ashford 1873 March qtr Volume 2a Page 803); he was born at Aldington near Ashford in 1848.

Frederick and Phoebe had at least seven children – Frederick (1875), Edith (1877), Raymond (1880), Lucy (1882), Maud (1885), Daisy (1887) and Norman (1889). The 1881 census records that Frederick was a carpenter and he and his wife and their three young children were sharing a house with his wife’s family at 17 Edward Street, Tonbridge.

The 1891 census records that Frederick was a carpenter and he and his wife and their seven children were living at 34 Forge Road, Tonbridge. The 1901 census records that Phoebe abd her two youngest children were living at 21 Laley (?) Street, Bexhill. There is no sign of Frederick and he must have been away as Phoebe is recorded as being married. The couple may of course have separated.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.2.1  ~~  Frederick Henry G. Ames

Frederick was born at Southborough in 1875 (Tonbridge 1875 September qtr Volume 2a Page 557). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his extended family at 17 Edward Street, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that Frederick was an apprentice printer and he was living with his parents at 34 Forge Road, Tonbridge.

Frederick married either Emily Florence Kimber or Florence Mary Russell in 1898 (Tonbridge 1898 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1377). Frederick and his wife may have emigrated shortly thereafter as there is no surviving record of him in the 1901 English census.

Edith was born at Southborough in 1877 (Tonbridge 1877 December qtr Volume 2a Page 589). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her extended family at 17 Edward Street, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 34 Forge Road, Tonbridge.

Edith married William Battell in 1898 (Tonbridge 1898 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1380); he was born at Bepton (north of Chichester) in 1875. William and Edith had at least two children – William (1899) and Frederick (1900).

The 1901 census records that Edith and her two babies were living at 38 Meadow Street, Southborough. Meanwhile William, who was a journeyman baker, was boarding with Marie Wragg at Nutfield in Surrey.

Raymond married Sarah Ann; she was born at Croydon in 1879. Raymond and Sarah had at least one child – Mary (1900). The 1901 census records that Raymond was a bricklayer and he and his wife and their infant daughter were living at 4 Laurel Cottages, Bexhill.

The 1901 census records that Lucy was a house maid at a school located at 49 Upper Grosvenor Street, Tunbridge Wells.

Lucy married in 1905 (Tonbridge 1905 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1519).

Eliza was born at Frant in 1850. The 1851 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Frant Road, Frant. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge.

Eliza married either Mallion Lambert or David Pratt in 1869 (Tonbridge 1869 December qtr Volume 2a Page 815).

Mary was born at Frant in 1852. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that Mary was unmarried and she was living with her parents (and probably helping her mother to raise her huge brood) at Edward Street, Tonbridge.

Mary probably married either George Thomas Harmer or James Bateman Major in 1876 (Tonbridge 1876 June qtr Volume 2a Page 882). She is not however recorded under either surname in any subsequent English census.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.5  ~~  Charles John Kates

Charles was born at Speldhurst in 1854 (Tonbridge 1854 June qtr Volume 2a Page 374). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that Charles was a labourer and he was living with his parents at Edward Street, Tonbridge.

Charles married Annie Cheal in 1874 (Tonbridge 1874 March qtr Volume 2a Page 666); she was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1853. Charles and Annie had at least eight children – Kate (1874), Charles (1876), Thomas (1877), Florence (1879), Alice (1881), Annie (1883), Harry (1886) and Frederick (1888).

The 1881 census records that Charles was a labourer and he and his wife and their three young children were living at Bankside Cottage, Speldhurst. Charles died in 1889 aged only 35 years (Tonbridge 1889 June qtr Volume 2a Page 339). He left behind a young and very large family.

The 1891 census records that Annie was a widowed laundress and she and her six children were living at 24 Western Road, Tonbridge. She had also taken in two lodgers to bring in extra money.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.5.1  ~~  Kate Phoebe Kates

Kate was born at Southborough in 1874 (Tonbridge 1874 September qtr Volume 2a Page 559). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bankside Cottage, Speldhurst. Kate married Arthur James Stanley in 1893 (Tonbridge 1893 March qtr Volume 2a Page 833); he was born at Stanway, Gloucestershire in 1865.

Arthur and Kate had at least two children – Charles (1893) and Dorothy (1894). The 1901 census records that Arthur was a coachman and he and his wife and their two children were living at North Frith, Hadlow. Kate’s younger sister Nellie was living with them at the time.

Charles was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1893 (he may have been born a year earlier before his mother’s marriage. The 1901 census records that the 8 year old school boy was living with his family at North Frith, Hadlow.

Dorothy was born at Hadlow in 1894. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at North Frith, Hadlow.

Charles was born at Southborough in 1876 (Tonbridge 1876 March qtr Volume 2a Page 623). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bankside Cottage, Speldhurst. The 1891 census records that Charles was an errand boy and he was living with his widowed mother at 24 Western Road, Tonbridge.

Charles married either Charlotte Mary Moon or Elizabeth Ann Ryde in 1903 (Reigate 1903 June qtr Volume 2a Page 447). Charles died in 1907 aged only 31 years (Reigate 1907 December qtr Volume 2a Page 122).

Thomas was born at Southborough in 1877 (Tonbridge 1877 June qtr Volume 2a Page 573). Thomas died in 1878 aged only a few months (Tonbridge 1878 March qtr Volume 2a Page 374).

Florence married Stephen Henry Bridger in early 1901 (Tonbridge 1901 March qtr Volume 2a Page 925); he was born at West Farleigh in 1878. The 1901 census records that Stephen was a laundry carman and he and his new wife were living alone at 21 Thomas Street, Tonbridge.

Alice (known also as Nellie) was born at Southborough in 1881. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 24 Western Road, Tonbridge. The 1901 census records that Alice (Nellie) was a housemaid and she was living with her sister’s (Kate Stanley) family at North Frith, Hadlow.

Annie was born at Southborough in 1883. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 24 Western Road, Tonbridge.

Edward was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1856. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that Edward was a labourer and he was living with his parents at Edward Street, Tonbridge.

Edward married Louisa; she was born at New Cross, London in 1858. Edward and Louisa had at least two children – Ernest (1887) and Ethel (1890). Edward and his family spent some time in South America (probably in Argentina) where at the time English investors were spending huge sums on developing the countries railroads. Their youngest daughter was born at Cordoba in the Sierras of Argentina.

The 1891 census records that Edward was a railway engine driver and he and his wife and their two children were living at 15 Stockwell Mansions, Eastcote Street, Lambeth. Edward and his family are not recorded in the 1901 census and it seems likely that they returned overseas – possibly back to Argentina which had a large English expatriate community at the time.

Ernest was born at Highgate, London in 1887. He spent some time in South America with his family in the late 1890s. The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 15 Stockwell Mansions, Eastcote Street, Lambeth.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.6.2  ~~  Ethel Kates

Ernest was born at Cordoba (probably in Argentina) in mid 1890. She returned home to England with her family in the next few months. The 1891 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with her family at 15 Stockwell Mansions, Eastcote Street, Lambeth.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.7  ~~  Edwin Kates

Edwin was born at Southborough in 1858 (Tonbridge 1858 June qtr Volume 2a Page 373). The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Edward Street, Tonbridge.

The 1881 census records that Edwin was an unmarried labourer and he was living with his parents at 17 Edward Street, Tonbridge. Edwin married Esther Fanny Farmer in 1887 (Tonbridge 1887 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1183); she was born at Chiddingstone in 1847. Not only was Esther 10 years his senior but she also had four teenage children from a previous marriage. Edwin and Esther appear to have had no surviving children of their own.

The 1891 census records that Edwin was a butcher and he and his wife and her four children were living at 16 Edward Street, Tonbridge. Esther died in 1913 aged about 64 years (Tonbridge 1913 March qtr Volume 2a Page 1077).

Lucy was born at Southborough in 1860 (Tonbridge 1860 March qtr Volume 2a Page 432). The 1861 census records that the toddler was living with her family at #2 Cottage, Brightridge Lane, Tonbridge. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Edward Street, Tonbridge.

Lucy married either Thomas Cox or Peter Brown in 1880 (Tonbridge 1880 March qtr Volume 2a Page 727). She is not recorded under either surname in any subsequent English census.

Lewis was born at Southborough in 1862 (Tonbridge 1862 March qtr Volume 2a Page 440). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Edward Street, Tonbridge. There is no further record of Lewis in England and he may have emigrated.

Ann was born at Southborough in about 1863. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Edward Street, Tonbridge. The 1881 census records that Ann was visiting David and Elizabeth Langridge at Myrtle Cottage, Rotherfield.

The 1891 census records that Annie was an unmarried laundress and she was living with her widowed mother at 11 Bedford Road, Tonbridge. Annie married in 1891 (Tonbridge 1891 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1153).

William was born at Southborough in 1865 (Tonbridge 1865 March qtr Volume 2a Page 495). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Edward Street, Tonbridge. The 1881 census records that William was a labourer and he was living with his parents at 17 Edward Street, Tonbridge.

1.8.3.2.3.1.5.3.11.12  ~~  Alice Agnes Kates

Alice was born at Southborough in about 1868. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Edward Street, Tonbridge. Alice married William Sowers Muggridge in 1888 (Tonbridge 1888 March qtr Volume 2a Page 761); he was born at Rusthall near Tonbridge in 1867.

William and Alice had at least one child – William (1890). The 1891 census records that William was a printer’s compositor and he and his wife and their infant son were living at 11 Bedford Road, Tonbridge. The 1901 census records that William was still a compositor and he and his wife, their son and his widowed mother in law were living at 12 Taylor Street, Southborough.
