She died soon afterwards. 1.8.5 ~~ Adam Alchorne Adam was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 5th June 1597. Adam was probably dead before 1601 as he was not included in his father’s will. 1.8.6 ~~ Isaac Alchorne Isaac was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 8th November 1601. 2 ~~ John Alchorne John was probably born in the early 1500’s and he may have been the son of William Alchorne and grandson of Andrew and Agnes Alchorne. John married Margery and they had at least six children – John (c1538), Gillian (1541), Elizabeth (1543), Margery (1549), Christabel (1553), Mary and Joan (the last two were probably born between 1555 and 1559 but the parish registers for this period are damaged or missing. John was living at Adams which then formed part of Alchorne Manor. In 1554 John Alchorne of Adams was a church warden at Rotherfield. According to Catherine Pullein, ‘Adams is a farm of 55 acres in the heart of the Borowe of Alchorne; it lies on the west boundary of Rotherfield Parish, divided from that of Buxted by a long ghyll called Mabbs, from the adjoining farm on the Buxted side. Since there is no known instance before this time of any person of the surname of Adams…..we may fairly ask, did this land take it’s title from Adam de Alchehorne who was a parishioner and juror in 1340.’ John Alchorne probably died in January 1581 when he would have been aged at least in his mid-70’s. He made a will (he was described as a yeoman in good position) on 9th January 1581 which was proved on 21st February 1581. His sons had predeceased him and he only had daughters living. He bequeathed to Julian his eldest daughter, wife of William Turner, 10 pounds; to Elizabeth wife of Thomas Hooke, 20 pounds; to Margery wife of William Benge, 10 pounds; to Christabel wife of Nicholas Catt, 10 pounds; and to Mary (obviously unmarried ), 80 pounds. By his will of Realty he gave to Gillian the house and lands called Collmaches (possibly the lands of Walter Calmach held by Andrew Alchorne and bequeathed to his son William in 1458) and a croft ‘called Acre in Retherfeld bounding the streete called Firre Street’; and to Joan, his youngest daughter ‘wife of Isacke Alchorne all my house, edifices and lands called Alchorne situate in Retherfeld and Buxted’. No doubt the married girls would already have received lands as part of their marriage dower. Margery Alchorne left a will dated 6th April 1856 and in it she leaves a bequest to her daughter Mary, ‘wife of Thomas Alchorne.’ 2.1 ~~ John Alchorne John was probably born at Rotherfield in about 1538 however the surviving parish registers for St Deny’s church Rotherfield only begin in 1540. John probably died in the summer of 1566 aged about 28 years. The burial register for 23rd August 1566 reads ‘John Alchorne, a single man, the son of John Alchorne of Adams’. 2.2 ~~ Gillian Alchorne Gillian was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 30th January 1541. She married William Turner at Rotherfield on 13th December 1563. When her father died in 1581 he bequeathed to Gillian 10 pounds, the house and lands called Collmaches and a croft called Acre in Rotherfield. William and Gillian may be the ancestors of my great great great grandfathers Jesse and Thomas Turner who left nearby Mayfield to immigrate to Australia in 1838. 2.3 ~~ Elizabeth Alchorne Elizabeth was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 1st September 1543. She married Thomas Hooke at Rotherfield on 10th November 1571. When her father died in 1581 he bequeathed to Margery 10 pounds. 2.5 ~~ Christabel Alchorne Christabel was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 21st February 1553. She married Nicholas Catt at Rotherfield on 12th October 1578. He occupied the land still known as Catt’s Farm. When her father died in 1581 he bequeathed to Christabel 10 pounds. Nicholas and Christabel had several children and their line survives to this day. 2.6 ~~ Mary Alchorne Mary was probably born at Rotherfield in about 1555. When her father died in 1581 he bequeathed to Mary the sum of 80 pounds. According to her mother’s will dated 1586 Mary was the wife of Thomas Alchorne. 2.7 ~~ Joan Alchorne Joan was probably born at Rotherfield in about 1558/9 but there is no surviving record of her baptism at St Denys’ church. She married her cousin Isaac Alchorne at Rotherfield on 16th May 1580. Isaac and Joan had at least four children – son (1581), Elizabeth (1586), John (1590) and daughter (1594). When her father died in 1581 he bequeathed to ‘Joan, my youngest daughter wife of Isacke Alchorne all my house, edifices and lands called Alchorne situate in Retherfeld and Buxted’. Joan died in early 1595 aged about 37/8 years and she was buried at Rotherfield on 28th January 1595. For the details of Joan’s descendants see paragraph 1.8 et al. (Note: much of the initial information for this part was provided by Derek Miller and from Catherine Pullein’s History of the Parish of Rotherfield) |
