Part 1d – The Descendants of William Alchorne and Jane Booker of Shoreham ...continued...

1.9  ~~  John Alchin/Allchorne

John was born at Shoreham on 1st March 1810 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 13th March 1810. John married Eliza Ann Hards at Shoreham on 8th August 1830; she was born in 1814. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Vicar Rev’d Robert Price. John and Eliza had at least one child – John (1831).

Eliza died in 1834 aged only 20 years – she possibly died in childbirth. She was buried at Shoreham on 27th April 1834. John subsequently married Sarah Hills at Shoreham on 19th December 1835; she was born at Birling in 1816. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Robert Price and the witnesses were Jonathan and Ann Tylor.

John and Sarah had at least ten children – William (1836), Jane (1837), Eliza (1839), Harriett (1841), Henry (1843), Sarah (1846), David (1848), Thomas (1851), Jesse (1854) and Sarah (1855). The 1841 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their four children were living with his widowed father at Shoreham.

The 1851 census records that John was a beer house keeper and he and his wife and their six children were living at Shoreham. John’s very elderly father was also living with them. Sarah died at Shoreham in 1859 aged 40 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 6th November 1859.

The 1861 census records that John was a widowed agricultural labourer and he and his four children were living at Shoreham. John subsequently married Ann Osborne a little while later (St Olave 1861 June qtr Volume 1d Page 42); she was born at Seal in 1823. John and Ann had at least two children – Frances (1862) and Grace (1864).

John died in 1868 aged 58 years (Sevenoaks 1868 March qtr Volume 2a Page 280) and he was buried at Shoreham on 29th March 1868. Ann subsequently married Henry Clarke; he was born in Somerset in 1828. The 1871 census records that Henry was a beer house keeper at ‘The Royal Oak’, Shoreham with his wife and her son and daughter.

Henry Clarke died before 1891. The 1891 census records that Ann was widowed and she was living with the family of her married daughter Francis Gilbert.

The 1861 census records that Eliza was unmarried and she was her father’s housekeeper at Shoreham.

1.9.5  ~~  Harriett Allchorn

Harriett was born at Shoreham in March/April 1841 (Sevenoaks 1841 June qtr Volume 5 Page 394) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 18th July 1841. The 1841 census records that the less than one month old infant was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham.

1.9.6  ~~  Henry Alfred Allchorne

Henry was born at Shoreham in 1843 (Sevenoaks 1843 June qtr Volume 5 Page 408) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 29th October 1843. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Shoreham.

Henry married three times – each time to a member (sisters or cousins) of the Pierce family of Walworth, Surrey. Firstly he married Ellen; then he married Sylvia Ann and finally he married Mary Ann. His first marriage was to Ellen Pierce in 1866 (Newington 1866 September qtr Volume 1d Page 326); she was born at Walworth in 1845.

Henry had at least thirteen children to his various wives – first marriage - Sarah (1868) and Henry (1870); second marriage - Jessie (1872), Arthur (1874), Bertie (1876), Charles (1878), Florence (1880), and Edgar (1882); third marriage - Albert (1885), Sophia (1886), Ernest (1888), Ethel (1890) and Henry (1893). As Henry’s third wife was considerably younger than her husband it seems likely that there would have been more children born in the 1890’s who must have died in infancy.

The 1871 census records that Henry was a carman and he and his wife (Ellen) and their infant son were living at 12 Bermondsey Square, Bermondsey. There is no record of the death of Ellen or her children but none of them appear in any subsequent census. (There are possible death entries in 1871 for Ellen and 1872 for Henry under the name of Allchin but this requires further research).

Henry then married Sylvia Ann Pierce in 1872 (St Saviour Southwark 1872 March qtr Volume 1d Page 128); she was born at Walworth in 1852 and she was probably Ellen’s sister or cousin. Henry and Sylvia had at least six children. The 1881 census records that Henry was a carman and he and his wife (Sylvia) and their four children were living at Mermaid Court (off Kent Road), Southwark.

There must have been some sort of genetic problem with the Pierce family as Sylvia died in 1883 aged 32 years (St Saviour Southwark 1883 December qtr Volume 1d Page 24). At least three of her five sons died in their 20’s – it is possible that tuberculosis was ravaging the family as it was extremely infectious.

Henry subsequently married Mary Ann Pierce in 1884 (St Saviour Southwark 1884 December qtr Volume 1d Page 85); she was born at Walworth in 1864. Henry and Mary had at least five children. The 1891 census records that Henry was a shop porter and he and his wife (Mary) and his nine children were living at 277 Weston Street, Southwark.

The 1901 census records that Henry was still a shop porter and he and his wife (Mary) and his six children were living at 277 Weston Street, Southwark. His younger brother Jesse and his wife were also living there. Henry probably died in 1915 aged ’73’ years (Southwark 1915 June qtr Volume 1d Page 81).
