1.1.1.2.1.8.2.2  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah and her elder brother William were baptised at Spitalfield's Christ Church, Stepney on 22nd April 1825. Sarah must have died when she was very young as her name was re-used by her family in 1833.

1.1.1.2.1.8.2.5  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was born in the parish of All Saints, Northampton in late 1834. The 1841 census records that the school boy was living with his family at St James Street, Northampton. The 1851 census records that Henry was living with his parents at Setter Street, Northampton. At the time he was probably learning the business from his father.

Henry married Mary Ann Lawman in 1859 (Newport Pagnell 1859 March qtr Volume 3a page 518); she was born at Newport Bagnell, Buckinghamshire in 1833. Henry and Mary had at least nine children – Henry (1860), William (1861), Mary (1863), Alfred (1864), Sarah (1865), Harriett (1868), Alice (1870), Annie (1872) and Samuel (1876). Most of their daughters never married (a common event with those Alchin families of a higher rank in society) and like his brother William, Henry had few grandchildren.

The 1861 census records that Henry was an engineer and he and his young family were living at St James Street, Northampton. The 1871 census records that Henry was a foreman in an engine factory (his father's?). He and his wife and seven of their children were living at Pytchley Street, Northampton. In the mid 1870's Henry moved his family back to his ancestral roots at Maidstone.

The 1881 census records that he was a manager at an engine works (constructing engines for his brothers machinery perhaps) and he and his wife and eight of their children were living at 47 Marsham Street, Maidstone. Mary Ann may have died in 1888 aged 54 years (Northampton 1888 June qtr Volume 3b Page 31).

Henry moved to Kent with his family  in the mid 1870's. He seems to have had a temporary falling out with his family as his younger brother William seems to have had preferment within the family business for many years.

Henry married Louisa Pettit in 1880 (Maidstone 1880 June qtr Volume 2a Page 959); she was born at Maidstone in 1860. Henry and Louisa had at least six children – Louisa (1880), William (1881), Sarah (1883), Mary (1886), Mabel (1889) and Gwendoline (1890). The 1881 census records that Henry was employed as an engine fitter. He and his wife and their baby daughter were living at 65 Waterloo Road, Maidstone.

Henry moved his family back to Northampton in the mid 1880's and then on to Manchester in the 1890's. The 1891 census records that Henry was a mechanical engineer foreman and he and his wife and six of their children were living at 26 Argyle Street, Northampton.

The 1901 census records that Louisa and their six children were living at 10 High Street, Newton Heath near Manchester. There is no sign of Henry and he may have been away on business as Louisa is recorded as married and not widowed. There is however a Henry Alchin aged 41 years recorded at The British Hotel, 100 Leonard Street, Perth in the Scottish 1901 census. He is recorded as an English born mechanical engineer superintendent. This is almost certainly Louisa's husband.

Louisa died in 1940 aged 80 years (Fylde 1940 September qtr Volume 8c Page 1340). Henry probably died in 1941 aged 81 years (Stoke 1941 September qtr Volume 6b Page 350).

1.1.1.2.1.9  ~~  Hesther Alchin

Hesther was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 6th August 1769.

1.1.1.2.1.10  ~~  Thomas Couchman Alchin

Thomas was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 15th February 1771. His name derives from his great-uncle, Thomas Couchman, who was the witness at his father's first marriage in 1755. Thomas Couchman had married Thomas' kinswoman Mary Alchin at Aylesford in 1736.

Thomas Couchman Alchin moved to Marylebone in London and married Mary (surname unknown). They had nine children – Thomas (1810), George (1812), John (1814), James (1816), Mary (1818), Samuel and William (1822), Hannah (1832) and Sarah. All nine of the children of Thomas and Mary are mentioned in the will of Cassandra Alchin (Casina Alchin ?) dated 1855.

Thomas was a silk manufacturer of Merton in Surrey and he took out a fire insurance policy on his premises with the Sun Insurance Company on 22nd June 1830. It appears that Thomas became a bankrupt and this was probably why he moved to Canada. His bankruptcy was mentioned in his brother Francis' will dated 1830 and for this reason his estate was left to Thomas' wife and children. The will clearly states that Thomas was living at Merton in Surrey (where his nephew William Alchin, later of Northampton, was born). The will makes it very clear that Francis did not have a very high regard for his brother.

Thomas moved with his family to Canada probably in the mid 1830s. According to the will of his sister Cassandra Alchin, Thomas had died and his widow was living at Wilmot in western Canada. He was probably the same man whose will was probated at Wilton, Ontarion on 8th June 1844 (M638 Reel 37). Thomas and Mary are both buried in the Old Paris cemetery in Brant County, Ontario.

1.1.1.2.1.10.1  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at Marylebone, London on 12th December 1810. Thomas emigrated to Canada with his family in the 1830's and he was left a share of his aunt's house at Limehouse when she died in 1856. Thomas may have married Harriett; she was born in Enhland in 1830. Thomas and Harriett had at least two children – Amy (1856) and Thomas (1859).

Thomas was buried (at an unknown date) in the Old Paris cemetery in Brant County, Ontario. This must have happened around 1860 as Harriett had emigrated to the United States and married William Millhand by 1861. She had at least five more children to William Millhand by the time of the 1870 US census when he was recorded as a farmer and he and his wife, their five children and her two children from her first marriage were living at Ridgeway, Orleans County, New York.

Note: This link is not proven and requires further research. Harriett may instead have been the wife of Thomas' youngest brother William Alchin (born 1822)!

1.1.1.2.1.10.1.1  ~~  Amy Alchin

Amy was born in Canada in 1856. She emigrated to the United States in 1861 settling in New York State. The 1870 US census records that Amy was living with William and Harriett Millhand (her mother and stepfather possibly) at Ridgeway, Orleans County.

1.1.1.2.1.10.1.2  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born in Canada in January 1859. He emigrated (possibly with his mother Harriett who remarried) to the United States in 1861 and settled in New York State.
