Volume 2 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings

Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 ...continued...

1.1.1.2.1.11  ~~  Susanna Alchin

Susanna was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 24th January 1773. There is a record of Susanna Alchin being buried at Meopham on 19th September 1774, but this now seems likely to have been her aunt Susannah, widow of Henry Alchin as the will of Cassandra (Casina) Alchin of 1856 makes it clear that her sister Susannah survived.

There is a record of a marriage between Susanna Alchin and William Dunning at St Nicholas' church, Rochester on 24th June 1792. They had at least one child – Sophia. They may have had two other children – George and Naomi.

1.1.1.2.1.11.1  ~~  Sophia Dunning

Sophia was probably born around the turn of the 18th century. It appears that she never married and she was one of the main beneficiaries of her aunt Cassandra Alchin's will in 1856.

"and the residue of my monied property (if any) I give and bequeath to my niece Sophia Dunning spinster hereinafter named………  ………. To my niece Sophia Dunning daughter of William and Susannah Dunning my bed and bedding my bedstead and mattress and hangings my Brussels carpet my Pembroke table and workbox the set of horsehair chairs six knives and forks six silver tea spoons the sugar tongs and the night chair"

George married Lucy Mary Post at Christ Church, Philadelphia on 8th January 1803. George and Lucy had at least seven children between 1803 and 1820 – three boys and a girl. At this stage the only identifiable children are – George (1804) and H(enry?) – (1809).

The 1800 US census records that George was the head of a household comprising two adult males at Chestnut Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 1810 census records that George was a book binder and he and his wife and their three children under five were living at Waggoners Alley in the South Mulberry Ward of Philadelphia.

The 1820 census records that George and his wife and their seven children (3 boys and 4 girls) were living at Dock Ward, Philadelphia.

At that stage he was probably already apprenticed out to learn his future trade.

George married Catherine; she was born in Pennsylvania in 1810. George and Catherine had at least five children – George (1834), Cassandra (1836), Susan (1840), William (1846) and Achindus (1850). Rachel was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 7th February 1779.

1.1.1.2.1.15  ~~  Casina Alchin

Casina was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 17th December 1780. Casina was born shortly after her father's death in October 1780. The baptismal register records her baptism thus:

"17th December 1780 – Casina daughter of widow Esther Alchin by her late husband John Alchin – privately baptised – publicly admitted 14th January 1781."

Was Casina the same person as "Cassandra Alchin, Spinster of St Ann, Limehouse" in London who died in 1856 (Stepney 1856 September qtr Volume 1c Page 370). It seems probable as her brother Francis Alchin made a codicil to his will on 6th February 1832 and left her the sum of 1000 pounds. The 1841 census records that Cassandra was a spinster and she was living with her elder brother Henry at Gill Street, Limehouse. Casina / Cassandra is not recorded in the 1851 English census.

Cassandra Alchin died in London in 1856 (Stepney 1856 September qtr Volume 1c Page 370). Her will (PRO reference PROB 11/2236) was proven at London on 10th September 1856. In an agreement with her relatives in Canada in 1846, Cassandra left the leasehold of her house in Limehouse to the nine children of Thomas Couchman Alchin (possibly her brother) and his wife Mary in return for the payment of an annuity of 20 pounds for the rest of her life. (In support of this theory John Alchin son of Thomas Couchman Alchin named one of his daughters Cassandra in 1854). Her will is reproduced below:
