Volume 2 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings

Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 ...continued...

1.1.1.3  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 11th July 1712. Thomas may have married Ann Perrett at East Malling on 31st January 1737. There is some doubt as to whether Ann married this Thomas Alchin or the Thomas Alchin at para 1.1.3.3 below. The naming patterns support the latter but this family's lack of wealth suggests the former might be more correct.

There is a burial at East Malling on 16th September 1756 which might relate to this Thomas Alchin.

1.1.1.4  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 6th February 1715. She died aged about 6 months shortly after the death of her father. Mary was buried at East Malling on 30th August 1715.

1.1.2  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 23rd February 1687.

1.1.3  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 25th April 1690. He married Elizabeth Gray at Rochester in 1710. Richard and Elizabeth had at least ten children – Elizabeth (1711), Richard (1713), Thomas (1716), Mary (1717), Anthony (1719), Rachel (1721), Ann (1723), Henry (1726) and twins Sarah and Anthony (1728). Note this line is proven by the wills of Rachel Alchin (1812), Ann Alchin (1825) and Susannah Alchin (1842).

Elizabeth died on 26th July 1752 aged 68 years. She was buried at East Malling on 29th July 1752.  Like his father and grandfather before him, Richard Alchin lived into very old age. The East Malling burial register records the death of Richard Alchin  on 24th June 1779 "in his 90th year". He was buried at East Malling on 29th June 1779. A memorial to Richard and Elizabeth still exists.

1.1.3.1  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 8th October 1711.

1.1.3.2  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 15th September 1713. Richard probably married Ann Brattle at West Peckham in 1738; she was born in about 1716. Richard and Ann may have had at least two children – Ann (1739) and Richard (1741). Ann died at the age of 62 years and she was buried at East Malling on 4th March 1779. Richard died at the recorded age of 63 years and he was buried at East Malling on 10th November 1780.

1.1.3.2.1  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 26th September 1739. Ann may have married Robert Webb at Dartford on 20th January 1765.

1.1.3.2.2  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 18th November 1741, the son of Richard and Ann Alchin. Richard probably married Ann Hunt at Meopham on 16th April 1786 and they had at least three children – Richard (1786), William (1788) and Mary (1791). Richard died at the age of 71 years and he was buried at East Malling on 23rd May 1813.

Richard may have been the tenant leasing the mill at Meopham mentioned in Henry Alchin's will dated 1800.

1.1.3.2.2.1  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 1st October 1786. He may have married Martha and if so they had at least six children – Martha (1807), Susannah (1813), William (1815), Henry (1818), Thomas (1820), George (1823).

The parish register records that Richard was a miller of Maidstone. They may also have had another daughter Mary who died at the age of 9 years and who was buried at Maidstone on 3rd July 1817. The 1841 census records that Richard was a miller and he was living with Richard and Jane Ashby and their family at Pembury (near Tonbridge) in Kent.

The family may have migrated to the United States as there is only a brief reference to a couple of family members in the 1851 census. The census records that Richard was a widowed miller and he was visiting Martha Lenham (his daughter?) and her three children (one of whom was born in America) at Loose Road, Maidstone.

Richard may have died in 1852 aged 65 years (Hollingbourne 1852 December qtr Volume 2a Page 253).

1.1.3.2.2.1.1  ~~  Martha Alchin

Martha was born at Faversham in 1807. Martha may have been in trouble with the law in the early 1830's. There is a record of a Martha Alchin appearing before the Maidstone quarter sessions. She appears to have gone to America where she probably married (there is no record of her having married in England). Martha had at least three children – Elizabeth (1840), Richard (1841) and Hester (1844). Her eldest child was born in America.

The 1851 census records that Martha was a laundress but there is no indication of her marital status at the time. She and her three children were living at Loose Road, Maidstone. Visiting the family that night was 64 year old Richard Alchin, a miller of Meopham – was this her father?

1.1.3.2.2.1.1.1  ~~  Elizabeth Lenham

Elizabeth was born in America in 1840. The 1851 census records that Elizabeth was living with her mother at Loose Road, Maidstone.

1.1.3.2.2.1.1.2  ~~  Richard Lenham

Henry was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 12th July 1818.

1.1.3.2.2.1.5  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 17th December 1820. Thomas is about the same age as a Thomas Alchin, born in England, who was recorded at Vermont in the United States in the 1850 census. That particular Thomas Alchin married Frances (according to the 1850 census) or Eliza (according to the 1870 census); she was born in Vermont in about 1824.

Thomas and his wife had at least three children – Charles (1850), Ella (1856) and George (1862). The 1850 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife and their infant son were living at Clarendon, Rutland County in Vermont.

The 1860 census records that Thomas (enumerated incorrectly as Charles J. Alchin who along with his wife and children were born in Ireland) was a farmer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Chittendedn, Rutland County.

Thomas moved his family west – probably after the end of the Civil War in 1865. The 1870 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were living at and he and his wife and their three children were living at Fennimore, Grant County in Wisconsin.

George was born in Vermont in Fenruary 1862. The 1870 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin. George married Emma; she was born in Minnisota in January 1870. George and Emma had at least two children – Blanche (1886) and Harold (1891).

The 1900 census records that George (whose occupation is illegible) and his wife and their two children were living at Chatfiedl, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

1.1.3.2.2.1.5.3.1  ~~  Blanche Alchin

Blanche was born in Iowa in September 1886. The 1900 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Chatfiedl, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

1.1.3.2.2.2  ~~  William Alchin

William was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 23rd March 1788. William may have married at Rochester in 1815.

1.1.3.2.2.3  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was born at Meopham in 1791 and she was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 24th July 1791. Mary married Jesse Johnson at St Margaret's church, Rochester on 3rd May 1817. Jesse was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 15th June 1787 the son of Thomas and Ann Johnson.

Jesse and Mary had at least six children – Mary (1818), Thomas (1821), Alfred (1824), Maria (1826), Benjamin (1829) and Charles (1831). Jesse appears to have two other children by another woman – Naomi Goodwin (1838) and David Goodman (1841).

The 1841 census records that Jesse was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Priesthood, Meopham. Jesse's two illegitimate children were also living with them (they may in fact have been the children of Jesse's eldest daughter Mary).

Mary died in the 1840's. The 1851 census records that Jesse was a widowed farmer and he and his extended family which included four children, a son in law, two grandchildren and an illegitimate son were living on his 8 acres of land at Meopham.

1.1.3.2.2.3.1  ~~  Mary Ann Johnson

The 1851 census records that Thomas was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living on his widowed father's farm at Meopham.

Thomas married Eliza; she was born in Essex in 1833. The couple do not appear to have had any surviving children but they may have adopted a child – Ida (1873). The 1861 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife were living at Camer Road, Meopham.

The 1871 census records that Thomas was a gardener and he and his wife were living at 4 Elliott Street, Gravesend. The 1881 census records that Thomas was still a gardener and he and his wife and their daughter were living at 10 Lane's Cottages, Swanscombe. As Ida was born in Newcastle on Tyne it seems likely that she was adopted by the couple.

1.1.3.2.2.3.2.1  ~~  Ida Johnson

Ida was born at Newcastle on Tyne in Northumberland in 1873. For this reason it seems unlikely that she was the natural daughter of Thomas and Eliza and she was therefore probably adopted. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 10 Lane's Cottages, Swanscombe.

1.1.3.2.2.3.3  ~~  Alfred Johnson

Alfred was born at Meopham in 1824 and he was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 9th May 1824. The 1841 census records that Alfred was living with his parents at Priesthood, Meopham. Alfred married Ellen (also known as Eleanor and possibly with a surname of King); she was born at Meopham in 1831.

Alfred and Eleanor had at least four children – Mary (1848), Jesse (1854), Clara (1860) and Isabella (1865). The 1851 census records that Alfred was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their young daughter were living at Punish, Snodland.

The 1871 census records that Alfred was still an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Dean Farm Cottage, Meopham. Lydia King who was born at Stoke, Suffolk in 1850 was visiting them and she may have been a relative.

Alfred died before 1891. The 1891 census records that Ellen was a widow and she was living at 5 Cresswell Terrace, Swanscombe. She had a boarder living with her, George King who was born in Essex in 1861. The 1901 census records that Ellen was living with the family of her married daughter Clara Martin at Craylands, Swanscombe.

William and Clara had at least three children – Alfred (1877), Charles (1880) and Henry (1886). There were probably other children who died in infancy or miscarried. The 1881 census records that William was a general labourer and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 1 Pilgrim Road, Snodland.

The 1891 census records that William was a general labourer and he and his wife and their three sons were living at 3 Calvary Terrace, Swanscombe. They had two boarders living with them – 28 year old John King and 25 year old William King both of Maldon in Essex. This lends weight to the theory that there was a connection between the Johnson and King families.

The 1901 census records that William was a labourer in the Portland cement plant and he and his wife, their two children and his mother in law were living at Craylands, Swanscombe. They also had two visitors - Emily and Clark James.
