Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 16th December 1741. He may have died whilst still a boy as his parents appear to have re-used his name in 1758. There is a burial recorded at East Malling of Thomas Alchin on 16th September 1756 and this Thomas Alchin would have been 14 years old at that time.

However Thomas Alchin of East Malling and Elizabeth Ermington of Leybourne were married at the church of St  Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 14th August 1768. The ceremony was performed by the curate, Reverend A. Dennis and one of the witnesses was William Tupper, the future husband of Thomas' elder sister Ann.

Thomas got into a disagreement that ended up before the Snodland manor court on 5th April 1783. Unfortunately there is no surviving record of what the Court ordered concerning this case:

"Thomas Alchin of the Parish of Birling, on oath saith that this day he was attacked by Thomas Jeffery of Snodland, butcher, as he was riding on horseback in the said Parish of Birling. That he the said Thomas Jeffery struck at the said Thomas Alchin several times and pushed him and his horse into a ditch."
