Volume 2 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings

Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 ...continued...

1.1.3.9  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah and her twin brother Anthony were baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st November 1728. Sarah probably died aged 8 months and she was buried at East Malling on 2nd June 1729.

1.1.3.10  ~~  Anthony Alchin

Anthony and his twin sister Sarah were baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st November 1728. Anthony may have died aged 6 years and if so he was buried at East Malling on 4th April 1735. However the burial register does not record that Anthony was a child as it would normally have done i.e. 'Anthony Alchin son of Richard Alchin' as occurred with his elder namesake who died in 1728. It is possible that this Anthony was buried at East Malling on 2nd August 1772 although it seems unlikely. The burial register is inscribed simply 'Anthony Alchin junior'. At this stage his older cousin Anthony, born in 1697, was still alive and living at East Malling.

1.1.4  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 27th February 1694. He may have married Elizabeth of whom no details are known. They seem to have moved to Meopham where they baptised four children – Henry (1718), Thomas (1721) and Elizabeth and William (1722). Henry was probably buried at East Malling on 18th December 1760 aged 66 years.

1.1.4.1  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 10th August 1718. He probably married a woman named Susannah (surname unknown) and they had at least one child – Susannah (1741). Henry was a major landowner at Priesthood in the East Borough of Meopham. The parish assessments valued this property at 40 pounds per annum for which Henry paid parish rates of between 3d and 6d in the pound per year.

Henry was also an overseer of the parish for many years and his signature appears regularly both in the parish accounts and in the parish marriage register as a witness. Henry witnessed the wedding of his kinsman John Alchin to Ann Terry in 1755 and he, or his father, may have even raised the boy after the early death of his parents.

Henry died aged 47 years and he was buried at Meopham on 30th June 1765. Probate on his estate was granted on 5th December 1765. The following year the parish assessments were made on Henry's widow but by 1770 the property had come into the hands of their son in law John Jervis or Jewiss. Susannah was buried at Meopham on 19th September 1774. Probate on her estate was granted on 29th October 1774.

1.1.4.1.1  ~~  Susannah Alchin

Susannah was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 3rd December 1741. She married John Jervis or Jewiss at Meopham on 5th June 1766 and the witnesses to their wedding were Susannah's cousin John Alchin and his wife Esther. John was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 6th February 1742 and he was the son of John and Jane Jewiss.

John and Susannah had nine children – John (1766), Francis (1768), William (1770), Samuel (1772), Henry (1774), Susannah (1775), Lydia (1777), Sarah (1779) and Jane. John Jervis (as he was recorded in the parish rates) took control of his late father in law's lands at Priesthood in the East Borough of Meopham from about 1770. He also seems to have gained control of land worth 65 pounds of year from Thomas Edmeades who was holding the land on behalf of his stepson John Alchin of Hook House, the son of John Alchin and Mary Phillips (see para 1.3.4.4.1).

John Jewiss was the churchwarden for the East Borough for 1773. Strangely enough John was illiterate and he had to make his mark on the parish accounts. In this year the total value of John's lands at Meopham were assessed at 105 pounds per year. However by 1780 his name had gone from the records and it is unknown whether he had sold the lands or lost them in a legal dispute. In this year the lands that he had previously held were assessed against John Child the brother in law of John Alchin of Hook House.

Susannah died aged 40 years and she was buried at Meopham on 7th October 1781. John Jewiss died aged 44 years and he was buried at Meopham on 21st September 1786. It seems that their descendants were no where near as prosperous as John and Susannah had been (many of them worked as watermen / lightermen on the Thames near Gravesend).
