Part 5 Other Alchin Families of Interest
1. The Descendants of Edward Hawes Alchin
1. ~ Edward Hawes Alchin
Edward was born in the early 1800s possibly at Woolwich.
At this stage I have been unable to find any surviving baptism record
for him. There is a possibility that he was the son of Francis Alchin
and Catherine Dove who married at St Andrew by the Wardrobe, London on
22nd May 1788. An alternative was that he was an unrecorded
child of Thomas and Lucy Alchin who were baptising children at Woolwich
between 1814 and 1823.
Edward married Sarah Ann Pheby Nesmith at the church
of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 22nd January 1835. Sarah must have died, probably
in childbirth, within a year or so of their marriage. Edward subsequently
married Frances Hawes (a cousin probably) in late 1837 (St Albans 1837
December qtr Volume 6 Page 743). They had at least three children
Joseph (1838), Edward (1841) and Henry (1844).
Edward probably died in 1848 (Greenwich 1848 September
qtr Volume 5 Page 207). Nothing more is known about him at this stage.
He is not recorded in the 1881 English census and he and his family require
further research.
1.1 ~ Joseph Silvanus Alchin
Joseph was born at Woolwich on 21st
July 1838 (Greenwich 1838 September qtr Volume 5 Page 215) and
his name was registered as Silvanus Joseph Alchin. He was baptised as
Joseph Silvanna Alchin at the church of
St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 19th August 1838. Joseph married Elizabeth
Ann Davies; she was born at Plumstead in 1850.
Joseph and Elizabeth had at least two children Joseph
(1869), Francis (1873) and Sylvanus (1881). The 1881 census records that
Joseph was an engine fitter and he and his wife and their two surviving
children were living at 34 Burrage Road, Plumstead. Joseph died in 1893
aged 54 years a few months after the death of his second son (Woolwich
1893 December qtr Volume 1d Page 903).

Joseph may have married Agnes Mary Fuller in 1893 (Holborn 1893 June
qtr Volume 1b Page 1064). Joseph and Agnes had at least four children
Amy (1894), William (1896), Mabel (1900) and Francis (1909).
Joseph and his family spent some time in India where
their eldest daughter was born in about 1894. They had returned to England
by the time of the birth of their second child in 1896. The 1901 census
records that Joseph was employed as an ammuniton engineer and he and his
wife and their three children were living at 17 Bastion Road, Plumstead.
At some time (yet to be established) Joseph moved to
Australia. He died at Essendon, Victoria in 1959

Reginald Silvanus Alchin served in the Australian Light Horse during World
War One.
