Part 5 – Other Alchin Families of Interest

1. The Descendants of Edward Hawes Alchin

1. ~ Edward Hawes Alchin

Edward was born in the early 1800’s possibly at Woolwich. At this stage I have been unable to find any surviving baptism record for him. There is a possibility that he was the son of Francis Alchin and Catherine Dove who married at St Andrew by the Wardrobe, London on 22nd May 1788. An alternative was that he was an unrecorded child of Thomas and Lucy Alchin who were baptising children at Woolwich between 1814 and 1823.

Edward married Sarah Ann Pheby Nesmith at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 22nd January 1835. Sarah must have died, probably in childbirth, within a year or so of their marriage. Edward subsequently married Frances Hawes (a cousin probably) in late 1837 (St Albans 1837 December qtr Volume 6 Page 743). They had at least three children – Joseph (1838), Edward (1841) and Henry (1844).

Edward probably died in 1848 (Greenwich 1848 September qtr Volume 5 Page 207). Nothing more is known about him at this stage. He is not recorded in the 1881 English census and he and his family require further research.

1.1 ~ Joseph Silvanus Alchin

Joseph was born at Woolwich on 21st July 1838 (Greenwich 1838 September qtr Volume 5 Page 215) and his name was registered as Silvanus Joseph Alchin. He was baptised as Joseph Silvanna Alchin at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 19th August 1838. Joseph married Elizabeth Ann Davies; she was born at Plumstead in 1850.

Joseph and Elizabeth had at least two children – Joseph (1869), Francis (1873) and Sylvanus (1881). The 1881 census records that Joseph was an engine fitter and he and his wife and their two surviving children were living at 34 Burrage Road, Plumstead. Joseph died in 1893 aged 54 years a few months after the death of his second son (Woolwich 1893 December qtr Volume 1d Page 903).

1.1.1 ~ Joseph William Alchin

Joseph was born at Plumstead in 1869 (Woolwich 1869 March qtr Volume 1d Page 931). The 1881 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at 34 Burrage Road, Plumstead. Joseph may have married Agnes Mary Fuller in 1893 (Holborn 1893 June qtr Volume 1b Page 1064). Joseph and Agnes had at least four children – Amy (1894), William (1896), Mabel (1900) and Francis (1909).

Joseph and his family spent some time in India where their eldest daughter was born in about 1894. They had returned to England by the time of the birth of their second child in 1896. The 1901 census records that Joseph was employed as an ammuniton engineer and he and his wife and their three children were living at 17 Bastion Road, Plumstead.

At some time (yet to be established) Joseph moved to Australia. He died at Essendon, Victoria in 1959 aged 90 years (Vic 1959/4288). One of his children / brothers (?) Reginald Silvanus Alchin served in the Australian Light Horse during World War One.

1.1.1.1 ~ Amy C. Alchin

Amy was born in India in 1894 but she returned to England with her family not long afterwards. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 17 Bastion Road, Plumstead.

William was born at Peckham in 1896 (Camberwell 1896 December qtr Volume 1d page 314). The 1901 census records that William was living with his family at 17 Bastion Road, Plumstead.

1.1.1.4 ~ Francis Norman Alchin

Edward was born at Woolwich on 12th June 1841 (there is a birth registration for Edward Thomas Alchin at Greenwich 1841 June qtr Volume 5 Page 233). He was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 4th July 1841. Edward died at Woolwich on 6th December 1844 aged 3 years (Greenwich 1844 December qtr Volume 5 Page 204).

1.3 ~ Henry William Alchin

Henry was born at Woolwich on 20th April 1844 (Greenwich 1844 June qtr Volume 5 Page 245) and he was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 12th May 1844. Henry married Emma Eliza Johnson in 1867 (Lewisham 1867 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1219); Emma was born at St Pancras in 1842.

Henry and Emma had at least eight children – Henry (1868), Elizabeth (1870), Frances (1872), Amy (1874), Sarah (1875), Martin (1877), Alice (1879) and William (1883). The birth certificate of his second son records that Henry was a machinist of 3 Dunelaw Terrace, Plumstead. The 1881 census records that Henry was employed as a metal worker and he and his wife and their five youngest children were living at 31 Durham Road, Plumstead.

Henry died in 1920 aged 75 years (Woolwich 1920 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1481). Emma died soon afterwards aged 77 years (Woolwich 1920 March qtr Volume 1d page 1488).
