Part 5 – Other Alchin Families of Interest

3. The Alchins of Wilmington and Dartford

1. ~ John Alchin

He is the first Alchin at Dartford from whom modern descendants can be traced – there were however other members of the Alchin family at Wilmington well before him. He may have been the son of John and Ann Alchin and if so he was baptised at Darton on 1st July 1744. John and Ann Alchin senior baptised at least two other children at Dartford – Ann (1745) and Elizabeth (1749).

John married Ann and they had at least six children who were all baptised at Wilmington – George (1776), William (1778), Mary (1781), Elizabeth (1782), Thomas (1784) and James (1787). Nothing more is known of John. John died prior to 1829. Ann died on 12th October 1835 aged 92 years. She was buried with her youngest son at Wilmongton on 18th October 1835:

“Mr James Allchin died 15 December 1829 aged 42. Also Mary Allchin his wife died 17th December 1830 aged 28 years. Also Ann Allchin mother of the above James Allchin died 12th October 1835 aged 92”

1.1. ~ George Alchin

George was baptised at Wilmington on 12th July 1776.

1.2. ~ William Alchin

William was baptised at Wilmington on 12th July 1778. He married Martha; she was born in about 1770. William and Martha had at least three children – Sophia (1805), William (1806) and James (1808). William was named the Executor of his youngest brother’s will in 1829 but when it came time to prove the will he renounced the executorship of the will (see below).

Martha died at Dartford on 18th October 1843 aged 75 years (Dartford 1843 December qtr Volume 5 Page 68). William died at Dartford on 26th June 1867 aged 89 years (Dartford 1867 June qtr Volume 2a Page 193). They are buried with their daughter and their youngest son at Wilmington.

1.2.1 ~ Sophia Alchin

Sophia was born at Wilmington on 24th July 1805. She married a man named Ward. They had at least one child – Mary (1827). Sophia died on 23rd November 1850 aged 45 years. She was buried with her parents and younger brother at Wilmington.

1.2.2 ~ William George Alchin

William was baptised at Wilmington on 10th December 1806. He never married. The 1881 census records that William was “of independent means” which usually meant that he was living off property or other investments. He was living with his unmarried niece at 54 Lowfield Street, Dartford.

William died in 1895 aged 88 years (Dartford 1895 March qtr Volume 2a Page 399).

1.2.3 ~ James Alchin

James was baptised at Wilmington on 4th September 1808.

1.3 ~ Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at Wilmington on 13th January 1781.

1.4 ~ Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at Wilmington on 10th October 1782.

1.5 ~ Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at Wilmington on 22nd December 1784.

1.6 ~ James Alchin

James was baptised at Wilmington on 18th March 1787. He married Mary Robinson at the church of St Martin in the Fields, Westminster on 18th June 1822; she was born in about 1802. James and Mary had children (his will makes this clear) but their names and the number of them is not yet known. They probably had at least two children – William (1823) and Mary (1825).

James lived in London up to the time that he died on 15th December 1829 aged 42 years. He was buried at Wilmington on 25th December 1829:

“The Last Will and Testament of James Allchin of the ………. New Bond Street I hereby leave to my dear wife all goods and chattels plate money and every thing I may be in possession of at my decease to be used by my dear wife at her own discretion during the term of her natural life but if in case of a second marriage a part of the property to be made over to my children I also appoint Mr William Allchin of Dartford in the County of Kent sole Executor to my wife and children. Mary died at Bond Street, London on 17th December 1830 aged 28 years. She was buried at Wilmington with her husband.
