Volume 3 Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings. By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 1901 (continued)
1.3.5.2.2 ~~ William Alchin William was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 11th November 1750. The parish register states that his father was John Alchin but his father may in fact have been Richard Alchin. It seems unlikely that his father was the John Alchin who married Margaret Philips in 1747 as their tombstone makes it clear that they had only two (surviving?) children:
Nor does it seem possible that he was the son of John Alchin the carpenter who married firstly Ann Terry in 1755 and then Esther Loader in 1761. These were the only three Alchin families who were baptising children at Meopham in this generation. The only other alternative is that he was a natural son of John Alchin of Meopham and a mistress. William probably married Margaret Shadwell at St James' church, East Malling on 22nd May 1779; both of them were previously unmarried and parishioners of East Malling. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Vicar, Dan Hill, and the witnesses were Edward Larkin and Thomas Mantle. Margaret was baptised at Aylesford on 2nd December 1753 and she was the 2nd of 5 daughters of William Shadwell and Margaret Branch who were married at Snodland on 26th August 1750. William and Margaret had at least eight children Mary (1779), William (1781), Robert (1783), Thomas (1786), Richard (1788), Peggy (1791), Henry (1794) and Elizabeth (1797). Most of their children married and children and William and Margaret now have thousands of descendants around the world. William died aged 67 years and he was buried at East Malling on 8th November 1818. Margaret died at East Malling Alms Houses on 18th September 1842 aged 89 years and she was buried at East Malling on 25th September 1842 (Malling 1842 September qtr Volume 5 Page 246). 1.3.5.2.2.1 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was born at Aylesford on 27th September 1779. She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 3rd October 1779. Mary was a witness at the wedding in February 1802 of her younger brother William Alchin to Elizabeth Stammers. Mary Alchin married William Tupper at St Nicholas' church, Rochester on 26th December 1802. William and Mary may have been cousins. William was a labourer of Larkfield and he was born at Birling in 1779, possibly the son of William Tupper (1746 1781) and Ann Alchin (1739 - 1780) of East Malling. William and Mary Alchin had at least seven children Thomas (1803), Mary (1805), Frances (1807), John (1810), Sarah (1815), William (1818) and Margaret (1821). The parish registers record that William was a labourer of Larkfield. Mary certainly died before 1851 when her sister Peggy Alchin left a bequest to the "children of my late sister Mary Tupper". Mary probably died at New Hithe Lane, East Malling in 1849 aged 71 years (Malling 1849 December qtr Volume 5 Page 262). She was buried at East Malling on 26th December 1849. The 1851 census records that William was a widowed farm labourer. He was living with his daughter and son in law (Margaret and Philip Cook) at East Malling. William died at New Hithe Lane aged 76 years and he was buried at East Malling on 22nd October 1854. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1 ~~ Thomas Tupper Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 24th July 1803. After the publication of the banns, Thomas married Eliza Barron at Aylesford on 9th September 1827. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd William Eveleigh and the witnesses were Mary Ann Tupper, William Austin and Richard Cosson. Eliza was born at Otham in 1802. Thomas and Eliza had at least seven children Mary (1829), Thomas (1830), Charles (1833), Eliza (1838), Jane (1840), William (1843) and James (1845). The 1841 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their four surviving children were living at East Malling. Thomas died at New Hithe Lane aged 43 years and he was buried at East Malling on 27th August 1846. Eliza married Henry Joy in the late 1840's; he was born at Wilmington in 1808. The 1851 census records that Henry was a potter's labourer and he and his wife, his two children and his wife's six children were living at New Hithe Lane, Larkfield. The 1861 census records that Henry was a brickfield's labourer and he and his wife and three of their children were living at 4 Albion Row, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that Henry was a labourer and he was ill. He and Eliza were living alone at 11 Albion Row, Aylesford. Henry probably died soon afterwards. The 1881 census records that Eliza was widowed again and she was living with her son William at 21 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1.1 ~~ Mary Ann Tupper Mary was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 28th June 1829. Mary died at New Hithe Lane aged 7 weeks and she was buried at East Malling on 5th July 1829. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1.2 ~~ Thomas William Tupper Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 26th December 1830. The 1841 census records that Thomas was living with his parents at East Malling. The 1851 census records that Thomas was a potter's labourer and he was living with his mother and step-father at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. Thomas married Jane Fowler at Aylesford on 10th March 1856. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd W. Kirkby and the witnesses were Charles and Jane Tupper. Jane was a servant who was born at Ditton in 1837, the daughter of William Fowler, a labourer. Thomas and Jane had at least three children Jane (1859), Thomas (1862) and William (1864). The 1861 census records that Thomas was employed as a day labourer and he and his wife and baby daughter were living at Aylesford Street, Aylesford. Jane Tupper senior probably died in 1867 aged 30 years (Malling 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 289). Thomas subsequently married Frances Earl nee Hills in the years between 1867 and 1871; she was born at Bredger in about 1826, the daughter of George Hills of Bredger, and she had a son from her previous marriage Edwin Earl (1862). The 1871 census records that Thomas was a labourer in the brickfields and he and his second wife, his two children, her child and her father were all living at 26 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. The 1881 census records that Thomas was employed as a general labourer and he and his wife were living at 9 Coys Cottages, Aylesford. Also living with the couple was an 18 year old carpenter of Aylesford. His name was Edwin Earl and he is recorded as an unmarried son in law. He was probably therefore the son of Frances. Frances Tupper died in 1887 aged 63 years. She was buried at Aylesford on 18th April 1887. The 1891 census records that Thomas was a widowed brickworks foreman. He was living with his son Thomas and his family at 26 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. Thomas was still living at the same address with his son at the time of the 1901 census. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1.2.1 ~~ Jane Tupper Jane was born at Aylesford in 1859 (Malling 1859 September qtr Volume 2a Page 370). At the time of the 1861 census Jane was living with her parents at Aylesford Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 26 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. Jane never married. She died at Eccles in 1886 aged 27 years (Malling 1886 September qtr Volume 2a Page 333). She was buried at Aylesford on 21st September 1886. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1.2.2 ~~ Thomas William Tupper Thomas was born at Aylesford in early 1862 (Malling 1862 March qtr Volume 2a Page 395). He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 30th March 1862. The 1871 census records that Thomas was a school boy and he was living with his family at 26 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. Thomas married Mary Elizabeth; she was born at Windemere in Westmoreland in 1862. Thomas and Mary had at least three children Jennie (1887), Hilda (1890) and Harold (1891). The 1891 and 1901 census both record that Thomas Tupper junior was employed as a lathe turner. He and his young family were living with his widowed father, Thomas Tupper senior, at 26 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. Their youngest son served in the British Army during World War One but he died of his wounds in 1918 (he was wounded in 1916). At the time of his death Thomas and Mary were living at "Bowness", Harrietsham. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1.2.2.1 ~~ Jennie Tupper Jennie was born at Eccles on 16th July 1887 (Malling 1887 December qtr Volume 2a Page 620). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his parents at 26 Eccles Cottages, Aylesford. Harold joined the British Army in World War One and eventually he was posted as a Lieutenant to the Royal Fusiliers. He was seriously wounded at Bazentin-le-Petit (probably on the Somme) on 4th August 1916. Harold was repatriated home where he finally succumbed to his wounds on 22nd July 1918 aged 26 years. He is buried in the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Harrietsham. 1.3.5.2.2.1.1.2.3 ~~ William Robert Tupper William was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 27th November 1864.
