By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued) 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.2.8 ~~ Ada King Ada was born at Larkfield in 1873 (Malling 1873 September qtr Volume 2a Page 485) and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 2nd November 1873, along with her cousin Arthur King. Ada is not included with the rest of her family in the 1881 census. She is probably however the Ada King who was adopted by relatives, William Alchin and Betsy Field. The 1881 census records that a 9 year old Ada King adopted by this childless couple was living with them at Church Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Ada (under the name of Ada Alchin) was living with her adopted parents at 2 Ada Cottage, New Hithe Lane in East Malling. Ada may have had an illegitimate child who did not survive for long – William Henry Alchin (1899). The 1901 census records that Ada was an unmarried laundress and she was still living with her adopted parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.2.9 ~~ Amy King Amy and her twin sister Alice were born at Larkfield in 1875 (Malling 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 516). They were baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 4th April 1875. The 1881 census records that Amy was a school girl and she was living with her family at Church Road, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Amy was not married. She was working as a nurse and she was living with her married sister's family at 119 Garden Road, Strood. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.2.10 ~~ Alice King Alice and her twin sister Amy were born at Larkfield in 1875 (Malling 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 516). They were baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 4th April 1875. The 1881 census records that Alice was a school girl and she was living with her family at Church Road, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Alice was also unmarried. She was working as a housemaid for Montague White (a hop and fruit grower) at The Lodge, Wateringbury. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.2.11 ~~ Arthur King Arthur was born at East Malling in 1877 (Malling 1877 December qtr Volume 2a Page 542). The 1881 census records that he was living with his family at Church Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Arthur was living with his parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. Arthur is not recorded in the 1901 English census. He may have died or possibly he was serving with the British Army in South Africa during the Boer War. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3 ~~ Thomas King Thomas was born at Ditton and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 5th July 1840. The 1841 census records that the toddler was living with his family at Larkfield, East Malling. The 1851 census records that Thomas was a shepherd's boy and he was living with his family at Kiln Barn Cottage, Ditton. The 1861 census records that he was an unmarried agricultural labourer. Thomas was living with his parents at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. After the publication of the banns at St James' church, East Malling on 4th, 11th and 18th August 1861, Thomas married Emma Joy; she was born at Ditton in about 1841. Thomas and Emma had at least nine children – Thomas (1862), Emily (1864), Edith (1867), Frederick (1870), Ruth (1871), Arthur (1873), Eliza (1875), Agnes (1878) and Emma (1882). The 1871 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at 18 Ditton Hill, East Malling. Also living there were Emma's brother Thomas Joy and his wife and infant. The 1881 census records that Thomas was employed as a labourer in the brickworks and he and his wife and their three youngest surviving children were living at London Road, Larkfield near East Malling. The 1891 census records that Thomas was employed as a "jobbing gardener". He and his wife and their three surviving children were living at Ditton Hill, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Thomas was employed as a brick loader. He and his wife and their youngest daughter were living at 20 Victoria Street, Aylesford. Emma died at her home at 19 Victoria Street, Eccles in 1908 aged 66 years (Malling 1908 March qtr Volume 2a Page 528) and she was buried at East Malling on 15th February 1908. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.1 ~~ Thomas King Thomas was born at Larkfield in 1862 (Malling 1862 September qtr Volume 2a Page **) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 12th October 1862. The 1871 census records that Thomas was a school boy and he was living with his family at 18 Ditton Hill, East Malling. The 1881 census records that Thomas was a baker and he was living with George and Louisa Patterson at their grocery and bakery at London Road, Larkfield. Thomas married Sarah; she was born at East Malling in 1863. The 1891 census records that Thomas was an unmarried coachman and groom and he was employed by the Twisden family at Bradbourne House, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Thomas was employed as an office clerk. He and his wife (they had no children living with them) were living at 21 Victoria Street, Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2 ~~ Emily Elizabeth King Emily was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th November 1864. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 18 Ditton Hill, East Malling. After the publication of the banns at St James' church, East Malling on 8th, 15th and 22nd August 1886, Emily married George Helson Francis at East Malling on 28th August 1886 (Malling 1886 September qtr Volume 2a Page 887). At the time of his marriage George was a labourer of Heath Road, East Malling and Emily was a servant of Ditton Hill. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were Thomas King junior and Mary Verrall. George was born at East Malling in 1864, the son of John Francis a dealer. George and Emily had at least seven children – Thomas (1887), William (1889), Nowell (1891), Bertha (1892), Mary (1894), George (1899) and Agnes (1900). The 1901 census records that George was employed as a wood cutter and farm labourer. He and his large family were living at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.1 ~~ Thomas George Francis Thomas was born at East Malling in 1887 (Malling 1887 June qtr Volume 2a Page 626). At the time of the 1901 census Thomas was living with his parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.2 ~~ William Francis William was born at East Malling in 1889. At the time of the 1901 census William was living with his parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.3 ~~ Nowell Helson Francis Nowell was born at East Malling in 1891 (Malling 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 655). At the time of the 1901 census the school boy was living with his parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.4 ~~ Bertha Beatrice Francis Bertha was born at East Malling in 1892 (Malling 1892 September qtr Volume 2a Page 641). At the time of the 1901 census the school girl was living with her parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.5 ~~ Mary Francis Mary was born at East Malling in 1894. At the time of the 1901 census the school girl was living with her parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.6 ~~ George Helson Francis George was born at East Malling in late 1899 (Malling 1899 September qtr Volume 2a Page 726). At the time of the 1901 census the toddler was living with his parents at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.2.7 ~~ Agnes Francis Agnes was born at East Malling in December 1900 (Malling 1900 December qtr Volume 2a Page 666). The 1901 census records that the 5 month old infant was living at Larkfield with her family. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3 ~~ Edith King Edith was born at Larkfield and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 31st March 1867. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 18 Ditton Hill, East Malling. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her uncle and aunt (James and Eliza King) at London Road, Larkfield. After the publication of the banns at St James' church, East Malling on 9th, 16th and 23rd March 1890, Edith married Albert Henry Sell at East Malling on 5th April 1890 (Malling 1890 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1019). The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd O.C. Legge-Wilkinson and the witnesses were Thomas King and Emily Elizabeth Francis. Albert was born at Langley, Kent in 1868 and he was the son of Richard Sell an agricultural labourer. Albert and Edith had at least eight children, four of whom did not survive infancy – Ella (1891), Albert (1892), Thomas (1893), Edith (1895), twins Agnes and Alice (1897), Harold (1898) and Arthur (1900). The 1901 census records that Albert was employed as a coal heaver and he and his family were living at Oxford Street, Snodland. Boarding with them was a 22 year old blacksmith, Harry Booker of Clowne, Derbyshire. Their youngest son Arthur died of wounds on the Western Front in September 1918. At the time of his death Albert and Edith were living at 2 Temperance Terrace, Constitution Hill, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.1 ~~ Ellen Lavinia Sell Ellen was born at Larkfield in 1891 (Malling 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 656). The 1901 census records that Ellen was living with her family at Oxford Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.2 ~~ Albert Henry Sell Albert was born at East Malling in 1892 (Malling 1892 June qtr Volume 2a Page 6*6). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Oxford Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.3 ~~ Thomas Richard Sell Thomas was born in 1893 (Malling 1893 September qtr Volume 2a Page 646). Thomas died soon afterwards (Malling 1895 September Volume 2a Page 408). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.4 ~~ Edith Emma Sell Edith was born in 1895 (Malling 1895 March qtr Volume 2a Page 663). Edith died a few months later (Malling 1895 September qtr Volume 2a Page 344). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.5 ~~ Agnes Sell Agnes and her twin sister Alice were born in 1897 (Malling 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 678). Both of the twins died almost straight away (Malling 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 389). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.6 ~~ Alice Sell Alice and her twin sister Agnes were born in 1897 (Malling 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 678). Both of the twins died almost straight away (Malling 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 390). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.7 ~~ Harold James L. Sell Harold was born at Snodland in 1898 (Malling 1898 September qtr Volume 2a Page 695). The 1901 census records that Harold was living with his parents at Oxford Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.3.8 ~~ Arthur Herbert Sell Arthur was born at Snodland in 1900 (Malling 1900 March qtr Volume 2a Page 706). The 1901 census records that the toddler was living with his parents at Oxford Street, Snodland. Like many of his contemporaries Arthur was a victim of World War One. In the last year of the war, Arthur joined the British Army but tragically he did not survive for long. He was assigned as a Private to the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers with service # 78663. Arthur died in hospital at St Omer in Normandy on 5th September 1918 aged only 18 years. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.4 ~~ Frederick King Frederick was born at Larkfield in 1870 (Malling 1870 June qtr Volume 2a Page 479) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st May 1870. Frederick died at Larkfield in 1870 aged 4 months (Malling 1870 September qtr Volume 2a Page 293) and he was buried at East Malling on 21st July 1870. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.5 ~~ Ruth King Ruth was born at Larkfield in 1871 (Malling 1871 December qtr Volume 2a Page 479) and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 12th December 1871. Ruth was not included with the rest of her family in the 1881 census. Ruth probably died at Larkfield aged 5 days (Malling 1871 December qtr Volume 2a Page 272) and she was buried at East Malling on 24th December 1871. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.6 ~~ Arthur Herbert King Arthur was born at Larkfield in 1873 (Malling 1873 December qtr Volume 2a Page 503). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 2nd November 1873, the same day as his cousin Ada King. The 1881 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at London Road, Larkfield. The 1891 census records that Arthur was employed as a general labourer and he was living with his parents at Ditton Hill, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.7 ~~ Eliza Ann King Eliza was born at East Malling in 1875 (Malling 1875 September qtr Volume 2a Page 493). The 1881 census records that Eliza was a school girl and she was living with her family at London Road, Larkfield. The 1891 census records that Eliza was employed as a domestic servant by Charles and Jane Thomson at Gig Hill Farm, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.8 ~~ Agnes King Agnes was born at East Malling in 1878 (Malling 1878 September qtr Volume 2a Page 555). The 1881 census records that she was living with her family at London Road, Larkfield. The 1891 census records that Agnes was a school girl and she was living with her family at Ditton Hill, East Malling. Agnes died at Ditton Hill aged 18 years (Malling 1896 September qtr Volume 2a Page 366). She was buried at East Malling on 2nd September 1896. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.3.9 ~~ Emma Beatrice King Emma was born at East Malling in 1882 (Malling 1882 June qtr Volume 2a Page 593). The 1891 census records that Emma was a school girl and she was living with her family at Ditton Hill, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Emma was unmarried and she was living with her parents at 20 Victoria Street, Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4 ~~ Susannah King Susannah was born at New Hithe Lane, East Malling and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 30th October 1842. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Kiln Barn Cottage, Ditton. She was not included with the rest of her family in the 1861 census and so she had probably gone into service before marrying. After the publication of the banns on 3rd, 10th and 17th January 1864, Susannah married Charles Brimsted at East Malling on 18th January 1864. Charles was born at Ditton in 1839, the son of John and Elizabeth Brimsted. Charles and Susannah had at least eleven children – Emily (1866), Sidney (1868), Percy (1871), Elizabeth (1873), Charlie (1874), George (1876), Frank (1878), Oliver (1880), Hugh (1881), Amy (1883) and Mildred (1885). The 1871 census records that Charles was a bricklayer's labourer and he and his young family were living at 13 Ditton Hill, East Malling. Their third child was only 3 weeks old at the time. The 1881 census records that Charles was employed as a general labourer. He and his family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. Their next door neighbours were Susannah's sister Alice Ashdown and her family. Susannah would have been heavily pregnant with her 9th child at the time. Charles died at Larkfield in 1885 aged 46 years and he was buried at East Malling on 13th April 1885. The census of 1891 records that Susannah was a widow and she was living with her eight children at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. She was fortunate that her four eldest sons were unmarried and old enough to work. Susannah died at her home at Lunsford Lane aged 55 years and she was buried at East Malling on 18th January 1898 (Malling 1898 March qtr Volume 2a Page 455). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.1 ~~ Emily Brimsted Emily was born at East Malling in 1866. The 1871 census records that Emily was a school girl and she was living with her widowed grandmother at New Hythe Lane, East Malling (her mother had just had her third baby). The 1881 census records that Emily was a school girl and she and her family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2 ~~ Sidney Brimsted Sidney was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 4th October 1868. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 13 Ditton Hill, East Malling. The 1881 census records that Sidney was employed as a shepherd boy and he and his family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Sidney was unmarried and employed as a general labourer. He was living with his widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. Sidney married Elizabeth Miller at East Malling on 25th December 1895 (Malling 1895 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1118). At the time of his marriage Sidney was a carter of Sevenoaks and Elizabeth was a domestic servant of New Hythe. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were Elizabeth Brimsted and Arthur Waghorn. Elizabeth was born in 1875 and she was the daughter of Robert Miller a labourer. Sidney and Elizabeth had at least six children – Rose (1896), Sidney (1898), Mildred (1900), Frank (1901), Robert (1902) and Arthur (1903). The parish register records that Sidney was a carter of Larkfield. The 1901 census records that Sidney was a coal carter and he and his wife and their four very young (all under 4 years of age) children were living at East Malling. Sidney's younger brother Hugh and sister Kate were also living with them. In 1922 Sidney's was a wagonner according to his daughter's wedding certificate. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2.1 ~~ Rose Emily Brimsted Rose was born at New Hythe on 30th September 1896 (Malling 1896 December qtr Volume 2a Page 669). She was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st November 1896. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2.2 ~~ Sidney Charles Brimsted Sidney was born at New Hythe in 1898 (Malling 1898 June qtr Volume 2a Page 662). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 3rd July 1898. The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2.3 ~~ Mildred Kate Brimsted Mildred was born at New Hythe in 1900 (Malling 1900 March qtr Volume 2a Page 707). She was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 4th March 1900. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at East Malling. Mildred married Albert Stewart Ballard at East Malling on 9th September 1922. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd W.J. Stead and the witnesses were Harold and Hilda Korwood. Albert was a 26 year old carpenter of Lunsford Lane and he was the son of George Ballard who was also a carpenter. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2.4 ~~ Frank Brimsted Frank was born at New Hythe in 1901 (Malling 1901 June qtr Volume 2a Page 717). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th April 1901. The 1901 census records that the new born infant was living with his family at East Malling. Frank died at Lunsford in 1915 aged only 14 years and he was buried at East Malling on 4th May 1915. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2.5 ~~ Robert Brimsted Robert was born at Syringa Terrace, New Hythe in 1902 (Malling 1902 September qtr Volume 2a Page 770). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th September 1902. Robert died at Larkfield aged 17 months and he was buried at East Malling on 10th February 1904 (Malling 1904 March qtr Volume 2a Page 469). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.2.6 ~~ Arthur Brimsted Arthur was born at Larkfield in 1903 (Malling 1903 December qtr Volume 2a Page 765). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 6th March 1904. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.3 ~~ Percy Henry Brimsted Percy was born at Larkfield in 1871 (Malling 1871 June qtr Volume 2a Page 480). The 1871 census records that the 3 week old infant was living with his family at 13 Ditton Hill, East Malling. Percy was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th May 1871. The 1881 census records that Percy was a school boy and he and his family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Percy was unmarried and he was employed as an agricultural labourer. He was living with his widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. Percy married in 1898, possibly to Lucy Ann Hearnden (Malling 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1313). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.4 ~~ Elizabeth Brimsted Elizabeth was born at Larkfield in early 1873 (Malling 1873 March qtr Volume 2a Page 522). She was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 4th May 1873. The 1881 census records that Elizabeth was a school girl and she and her family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.5 ~~ Charlie Brimsted Charlie was born at Larkfield in mid 1874 (Malling 1874 June qtr Volume 2a Page 513). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 19th July 1874. Charlie died at Larkfield aged 11 months and he was buried at East Malling on 25th April 1875 (Malling 1875 June qtr Volume 2a Page 308). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.6 ~~ George Brimsted George was born at East Malling in 1875 (Malling 1875 September qtr Volume 2a page 510). The 1881 census records that he was a school boy and he and his family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that George was employed as an agricultural labourer. He was living with his widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. The 1901 census records that George was employed as a cement labourer at Snodland. George may have married in 1899 (Malling 1899 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1414). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.7 ~~ Frank Brimsted Frank was born at East Malling in 1877 (Malling 1877 December qtr Volume 2a Page 549). The 1881 census records that he and his family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Frank was employed as an agricultural labourer. He was living with his widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.8 ~~ Oliver Brimsted Oliver was born at East Malling in 1880. The census of 1881 records that the infant boy was living with his family at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Oliver was living with his widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. Oliver married either Olive May Downs or Dolcie Kate Harland in 1909 (Malling 1909 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1407). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.9 ~~ Hugh Brimsted Hugh was born at East Malling in 1881 (Malling 1881 December qtr Volume 2a page 588). The 1891 census records that Hugh was a school boy and he was living with his widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Hugh was a labourer in the cement works and he was living with his elder brother Sidney and his family at East Malling. Hugh married Sophronia (her surname is presently unknown). They had at least one child – Stanley (1904). The parish register records that Hugh was a cement labourer of New Hythe. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.9.1 ~~ Stanley Edward Brimsted Stanley was born at Larkfield in mid 1904 (Malling 1904 June qtr Volume 2a Page 781) He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th August 1904. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.10 ~~ Amy Brimsted Amy was born at East Malling in 1883 (Malling 1883 December qtr Volume 2a Page 602). The 1891 census records that Amy was a school girl and she was living with her widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Amy was living with her elder brother Sidney and his family at East Malling. Amy married James Joseph Stitchman at East Malling on 19th October 1907 (Malling 1907 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1409). The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd Walter Buckland and the witnesses were Leonard Spain and Frank Brimsted. James was a 25 year old labourer of Cobbs Hall, East Malling and he was the son of George Stitchman a labourer. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.4.11 ~~ Mildred Kate Brimsted Mildred was born at East Malling in 1885 Malling 1885 December qtr Volume 2a Page 611). The 1891 census records that Mildred was a school girl and she was living with her widowed mother at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.5 ~~ Mary Ann King Mary was born at Ditton in 1845 (Malling 1845 December qtr Volume 5 Page 335). The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Kiln Barn Cottage, Ditton. The 1861 census records that Mary was a school girl and she was living at home with her parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.6 ~~ Sarah King Sarah was born at Ditton in 1847 (Malling 1847 September qtr Volume 5 Page 350) and she was baptised at Ditton in November 1847. Sarah probably died in either early 1848 or late 1850. She is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1851 census. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.7 ~~ Emily King Emily was born at Ditton in 1849 (Malling 1849 June qtr Volume 5 Page ***). The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Kiln Barn Cottage, Ditton. The 1861 census records that Emily was a school girl and she was living at home with her parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.8 ~~ George King George was baptised at Ditton on 19th October 1851. The 1861 census records that George was a school boy and he was living at home with his parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. There is no sign of George in the 1871 census. George married Charlotte; she was born at Kingston in 1850. It appears that they had no surviving children. The 1881 census records that George was a married school master (however there is no sign of his wife) at the boy's refuge in Whitechapel in the East End of London. There is no sign of George or his wife in the 1891 census. The 1901 census records that George is the Superintendent and Charlotte is the Matron of the orphan asylum at Sunderland in County Durham. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9 ~~ James Edward King James was born at Larkfield in 1853 (Malling 1853 March qtr Volume 2a Page 318). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 20th March 1853. The 1861 census records that James was a school boy and he was living with his parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. The 1871 census records that James was employed as a labourer in the cement works. He was unmarried and he was living with his widowed mother at New Hythe Lane, East Malling. James married Eliza Pearson at Brenchley on 23rd March 1872. Eliza was born at Barming, Kent in 1853. James and Eliza had at least eight children – Frances (1874), Elizabeth (1878), Mary (1881), Lily (1883), James (1885), Emily (1888), Harry (1890) and Edward (1893). The 1881 census records that James was employed as a cement miller. He and his wife and their three children were living on the London Road, Larkfield near East Malling. The 1891 census records that James was employed as a cement dresser. He and his wife and six of their children were living at Newhithe Lane, East Malling. James died at New Hythe aged only 41 years. He was buried at East Malling on 10th June 1894 (Malling 1894 June qtr Volume 2a Page 332). The census of 1901 records that his widow and five of their children were living at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.1 ~~ Frances Alice King Frances was born at Larkfield and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 21st June 1874. At the time of the 1881 census Frances was a school girl and she was living with her family at London Road, Larkfield near East Malling. The 1901 census records that Frances was still unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother at Larkfield. Frances may have married in 1903 – possibly to her cousin George King (Malling 1903 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1473). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.2 ~~ Elizabeth Sarah King Elizabeth was born at East Malling in 1878 (Malling 1878 December qtr Volume 2a Page 554). At the time of the 1881 census she was living with her family at London Road, Larkfield near East Malling. At the time of the 1891 census Elizabeth was a school girl and she was living with her parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Elizabeth was an unmarried school teacher and she was living with her widowed mother at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.3 ~~ Mary Ann King Mary was born at East Malling in May 1881 (Malling 1881 June qtr Volume 2a Page 568). The 1881 census records that the infant girl was only one month old and she was not yet named. At the time of the 1891 census the school girl was living with her family at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.4 ~~ Lily May King Lily was born at East Malling in 1883 (Malling 1883 June qtr Volume 2a Page 590). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.5 ~~ James King James (Jim) was born at East Malling in 1886 (Malling 1886 June qtr Volume 2a Page 617). At the time of the 1891 census Jim was a school boy and he was living with his parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Jim was employed as a butcher's boy and he was living with his widowed mother at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.6 ~~ Emily Gertrude King Emily was born at East Malling in 1888 (Malling 1888 June qtr Volume 2a Page 609). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.7 ~~ Harry King Harry was born at New Hythe in 1890 (Malling 1890 September qtr Volume 2a Page 621) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th September 1890. At the time of the 1891 census the 8 month old infant boy was living with his family at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.9.8 ~~ Edward Arthur King Edward was born at New Hythe in 1893 (Malling 1893 September qtr Volume 2a Page 645) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 3rd September 1893. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at Larkfield. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10 ~~ William King William was born at Larkfield in 1854 and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 20th August 1854. The 1861 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his family at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. The 1871 census records that he was working as an agricultural labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at New Hythe Lane, East Malling. William married Frances Elizabeth M. A. Honey at St Paul's church, Maidstone on 20th January 1878 (Maidstone 1878 March qtr Volume 2a Page 732); she was born at Cuxton Court, High Street, Maidstone in 1853, the daughter of Jesse Honey (a waterman) and Frances Elizabeth Trice. The witnesses to their wedding were Thomas King and Amelia Annie Marie Honey. William and Frances had at least four children – Fanny (1878), William (1881), Charles (1884) and Alfred (1885). The 1881 census records that William was employed as a labourer and he and his young family were living at Larkfield Street, East Malling. Frances died in 1887 aged only 36 years (Malling 1887 December qtr Volume 2a Page 336). The 1891 census records that William was a widowed cement miller and he and his eldest son were boarding with George and Elizabeth Baker at 5 Castle Street, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that William was a cement miller and he and his youngest son were living with the now widowed Elizabeth Baker (she was his housekeeper) behind the Waterman's Arms at Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.1 ~~ Fanny Elizabeth King Fanny was born at East Malling on 8th October 1878 (Malling 1878 December qtr Volume 2a Page 551) and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st December 1878. The 1881 census records that she was living with her family at Larkfield Street, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Fanny was visiting her cousin Alfred Tupper at Larkfield Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.2 ~~ William King William was born at East Malling on 8th February 1881 (Malling 1881 March qtr Volume 2a Page 603) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st May 1881. The census of that year records that the 2 month old infant boy was living with his family at Larkfield Street, East Malling. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed father at 5 Castle Street, Wouldham. William joined the British Army and he probably served in South Africa during the Boer War. He married Mabel Flower Hancock at St Mary's church, Burnham on 2nd July 1904. The witnesses to the ceremony were Eliza Hancock (Mabel's elder sister) and Percy Gilman. Mabel was born at Lees Pit, Burnham on 30th January 1888 the daughter of William Hancock (a labourer in the cement works) and Ester Austen. William and Mabel King had three children – Frances (1904), Violet (1906) and Edith (1909). William served as a Private in India with the 4th Battalion, "The Buffs" – Royal East Kent Regiment in India in 1915-1916.
1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.2.1 ~~ Frances Priscilla King Frances was born in 1904. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.2.2 ~~ Violet May King Violet was born in 1906. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.2.3 ~~ Edith King Edith was born on 26th January 1909. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.3 ~~ Charles Henry King Charles was born at East Malling on 6th January 1884 (Malling 1884 March qtr Volume 2a Page 621). He died in late March 1884 aged about 2 months (Malling 1884 June qtr Volume 2a Page 331). Charles was buried at East Malling on 4th April 1884. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.10.4 ~~ Alfred King Alfred was born at Wouldham in 1885 (Malling 1885 June qtr Volume 2a Page 686). After the death of his mother Alfred appears to have been given up for adoption. The 1891 census records that the school boy was the adopted son of James and Mary Dennett at 12 Castle Street, Wouldham. Alfred appears to have returned to his father in the 1890's. The 1901 census records that Alfred was a labourer in a cement mill and he was living with his widowed father at Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11 ~~ Alice King Alice was born at New Hithe Lane and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st June 1857. The 1861 census records that Alice was living with her parents at New Hithe Lane, East Malling. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at New Hythe Lane, East Malling. After the publication of the banns on 14th, 21st and 28th February 1875, Alice married Alfred Ashdown at East Malling on 6th March 1875 (Malling 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 651). Alfred and his twin were born at Leybourne in 1856, the children of Thomas and Mary Ashdown. Alfred and Alice had at least twelve children – Alice (1875), Alfred (1877), Sarah (1879), Harold (1881), Elsie (1883), George (1885), Percy (1887), Wilfred (1889), Basil (1890), Norah (1893), Oswald (1895) and Hilda (1898). The five eldest were born at Larkfield with the rest being born at either Wouldham or Aylesford. The 1881 census records that Alfred was employed as a corn miller and he and his young, and rapidly growing family, were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. Their next door neighbours were Charles and Susannah Brimsted and their seven children, Susannah being Alice's elder sister. The 1891 census records that Alfred was employed as a cement miller. He and his large family were living at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that Alfred was still employed as a cement miller. He and his wife and eight of their children were living at "West Kent", Aylesford. Visiting the family that night was 18 year old Bessie Hardrey of Ditton. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.1 ~~ Alice Mary Ashdown Alice was born at Larkfield (Malling 1875 September qtr Volume 2a Page 511) and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 15th August 1875. The 1881 census records that she was a school girl and she and her family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.2 ~~ Alfred Ashdown Alfred was born at East Malling in 1877. The 1881 census records that Alfred and his family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. Alfred probably died at Larkfield later that year aged 4 years (Malling 1881 December qtr Volume 2a Page 299). He was buried at East Malling on 16th October 1881. (This is confirmed by the fact that Alfred was not included with the rest of his family in the 1891 census). 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.3 ~~ Sarah Ashdown Sarah was born at East Malling in 1879. The 1881 census records that Sarah and her family were living at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Sarah was a school girl and she was living with her family at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. Sarah married George Henry Mitchell at Aylesford on 6th June 1896 (Malling 1896 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1135). The witnesses to their wedding were Edith Maria Mitchell and Alfred Ashdown. George was an 18 year old engine driver, son of George Mitchell who was also an engine driver. Sarah however died at the early age of 19 years, possibly in child birth. She was buried at Aylesford on 21st July 1898. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.4 ~~ Harold Ashdown Harold was born at Larkfield in early 1881. The census of that year records that the 3 month old infant was living with his family at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Harold was a school boy and he was living with his family at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that Harold was employed as a cement labourer and he was living with his parents at Aylesford. Harold married either Elizabeth Ardrey or Elizabeth Bennett in 1901 (Malling 1901 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1411). Harold and Elizabeth had at least two children – Frances (1902) and Violet (1904). The parish register records that Harold was a stone-dresser of New Hythe. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.4.1 ~~ Frances Hilda Ashdown Frances was born at New Hythe (Malling 1902 March qtr Volume 2a Page 719) and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 6th April 1902. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.4.2 ~~ Violet Alice Elizabeth Ashdown Violet was born at New Hythe and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 31st July 1904. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.5 ~~ Elsie Ashdown Elsie was born at Larkfield in 1883 (Malling 1893 June qtr Volume 2a Page 580). The 1891 census records that Elsie was living with her family at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that Elsie was unmarried and she was probably helping her mother raise her very large family at Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.6 ~~ George Ashdown George was born at Wouldham in 1885. The 1891 census records that George was a school boy and he was living with his family at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that George was employed as a cement labourer and he was living with his parents at Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.7 ~~ Percy Ashdown Percy was born at Burham in 1887. The 1891 census records that Percy was living with his family at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. Percy probably died at New Field, Aylesford aged 9 years and he was buried at Aylesford on 7th April 1896. This is confirmed by the fact that Percy is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1901 census. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.8 ~~ Wilfred Ashdown Wilfred was born at Wouldham in 1889. The 1891 census records that Wilfred was living with his family at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.9 ~~ Basil Ashdown Basil was born at Wouldham in late 1890 (Malling 1890 December qtr Volume 2a Page 582). The census of that year records that the 4 month old infant boy was living with his parents at 15 Church Lane, Wouldham. The 1901 census records that Basil was living with his parents at Aylesford where he was a school boy. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.10 ~~ Norah Ashdown Norah was born at Wouldham in about 1893 (Malling 1893 March qtr Volume 2a Page 646). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.11 ~~ Oswald Henry Ashdown Oswald was born at Wouldham in 1895 (Malling 1895 June qtr Volume 2a Page 657). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.5.11.12 ~~ Hilda Maud Ashdown Hilda was born at Aylesford in 1898 (Malling 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 660). The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at "West Kent", Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6 ~~ William Tupper William was born at Larkfield and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 29th November 1818. He married Frances Ann King (probably the sister of his brother in law Henry King) in 1841 (Malling 1841 March qtr Volume 5 Page 292). Frances was born at Teston, Kent in 1817. William and Frances had at least eight children – Thomas (1842), Maria (1844), Susan (1846), Elizabeth (1848), John (1850), William (1852), Sarah (1855) and Christiana (1858). The 1841 census records that the newly wed couple were living at Home Borough, Leybourne where William was employed as a servant. The 1861 census records that William was employed as a labourer in the local coal works. He and his wife and their four youngest children were living at Larkfield, East Malling. The 1871 census records that William was employed as an agricultural labourer and he and wife, two of their children and one granddaughter were living at New Hythe Lane, East Malling. The 1881 census records that William was employed as a gardener. He and his wife, their two unmarried children and their 7 year old grandson, Frederick Bennett (born Peckham, Surrey in 1873) were living at Water Lane, West Malling. Frances died in 1888 aged 71 years (Malling 1888 March qtr Volume 2a Page 408). The 1891 census records that William was a seedsman and florist and he was living with his daughter and her two children at High Street, West Malling. The 1901 census records that William was a retired florist and he was living with his widowed daughter and her family at Town Hill, West Malling. William died at his daughter's house in 1902 aged 84 years (Malling 1902 December qtr Volume 2a Page 422). He was buried at East Malling on 27th December 1902. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.1 ~~ Thomas Tupper Thomas was born at New Hithe Lane, East Malling on 25th July 1842 (Malling 1842 September qtr Volume 2a Page 309). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 28th August 1842. Thomas was not recorded with his family in the 1861 census and he was probably at sea at that time. The 1871 census records that Thomas was a seaman (Royal Navy probably). He was unmarried and he was staying with his parents at New Hythe Lane, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2 ~~ Maria Ann Tupper Maria was born at New Hithe Lane, East Malling on 16th August 1844. She was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st September 1844. Maria had an illegitimate daughter to a man surnamed Brunel – Ann (1863). Maria ended up marrying (Frederick?) Brunel and she had at least two more children – Alice (1865) and Frederick (1873). The 1881 census records that her occupation was housekeeper and she was living with her elderly parents at Water Lane, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Maria was working in the "registry office for servants" and she and her two children were living with her father at High Street, West Malling. The 1901 census records that Maria was a laundry proprietor and she was living at Town Hill, West Malling. Also living with her were her elderly father, her blind daughter, her widowed daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and two servants. Maria died at West Malling in 1939 aged 94 years and she was buried at West Malling on 19th April 1939. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2.1 ~~ Ann Frances Brunell Tupper Ann was born at Deptford and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 11th November 1863. The 1871 census records that Ann was a school girl and she was living with her grandparents at New Hythe Lane, East Malling. She was not living with her single mother at East Malling at the time of the 1881 census and she may have married or gone into service. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2.2 ~~ Alice Brunel Alice was born at Peckham, Surrey in 1865. Grace was blind from childhood. The 1891 census records that Alice was a music teacher and she was living with her family at High Street, West Malling. The 1901 census records that she was an unmarried music teacher. She was living with her widowed mother and grandfather at Town Hill, West Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2.3 ~~ Frederick John William Brunel Frederick was born at Peckham on 30th April 1881 (Camberwell 1873 June qtr Volume 1d Page 681). He was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 12th May 1873. The 1891 census records that Frederick was a gardener and he was living with his mother and grandfather at High Street, West Malling. Frederick married Nellie Dovey in London in 1893 (Paddington 1893 September qtr Volume 2a Page 165); she was born at Wolverhampton in 1872. They had at least three children – Annie (1893) Frederick (1894) and Lawrence (1897). Frederick died at Stockwell in 1897 (Croydon 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 177) aged only 24 years. He was buried at West Malling on 20th March 1897. The 1901 census records that Nellie was a partner in her mother-in-law's laundry business. Nellie and her two surviving children were living with her mother-in-law at Town Hill, West Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2.3.1 ~~ Annie Alberta Brunel Annie, known as Bertha, was born at Hanwell, Middlesex on 25th July 1893 (Brentford 1893 September qtr Volume 3a Page 99). She was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 17th September 1893. The 1901 census records that the schoolgirl was living with her widowed mother, grandmother and great grandfather at Town Hill, West Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2.3.2 ~~ Frederick Clarence Brunel Frederick was born at West Malling on 5th December 1894 (Malling 1895 March qtr Volume 2a Page 669). He was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 31st March 1895. Frederick died at West Malling in late 1895 aged 10 months (Malling 1895 December qtr Volume 2a Page 347) and he was buried at West Malling on 12th October 1895. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.2.3.3 ~~ Lawrence Francis J. Brunel Lawrence was born at West Malling in 1897 (Malling 1897 December qtr Volume 2a Page 672). The 1901 census records that he was living with his widowed mother, grandmother and great grandfather at Town Hill, West Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.3 ~~ Susan Tupper Susan was born at New Hithe Lane, East Malling on 23rd February 1846 (Malling 1846 March qtr Volume 5 Page 364). She was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 12th April 1846. She is not recorded with her family in either the 1861 or 1871 census. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4 ~~ Elizabeth Tupper Elizabeth was born at East Malling in late 1847 (Malling 1847 December qtr Volume 5 Page 335). She was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 16th January 1848. The 1861 census records that Elizabeth was employed as a servant girl by George and Elizabeth Carmen at Kiln Barn Farm, Ditton. Elizabeth married Miles Arthur Sendall in London in 1868 (Lambeth 1868 September qtr Volume 1d Page 673); he was born at Norwich in 1848 (Norwich 1848 December qtr Volume 13 Page 243). Miles and Elizabeth had at least nine children – Arthur (1870), William (1872), John (1877), Herbert (1879), James (1882), Elizabeth (1884), May (1887), Oliver (1890) and Archibald (1892). The 1871 census records that Miles was a railway clerk and he and his wife and their infant son were living at 64 Bradshaw Vale Court Road, Deptford. At the time of the 1881 census Miles and his family were probably in Belgium or France. Their fourth child was born at Brussels in 1882. The 1891 census records that Miles was a coal merchant's auditor and he and his wife and their five children were living at 7 Thorne Terrace, Barnes. Miles died in 1896 aged 47 years (Isle of Wight 1896 March qtr Volume 2b Page 409). The 1901 census records that Elizabeth was widowed and she was living at 67 Cathnor Road, Hammersmith with two of her sons. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.1 ~~ Arthur J. Sendall Arthur was born at Deptford in May 1870. The 1871 census records that the 11 month old infant was living with his family at 64 Bradshaw Vale Court Road, Deptford. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.2 ~~ William C. Sendall William was born at New Cross in 1872. The 1891 census records that William had no occupation and he was living with his parents at 7 Thorne Terrace, Barnes. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.3 ~~ John Edwin Sendall John was born at Peckham in 1877 (Camberwell 1877 December qtr Volume 1d Page *13). The 1891 census records that John was a grocer's assistant and he was living with his parents at 7 Thorne Terrace, Barnes. The 1901 census records that John was a baker and he was living with his widowed mother at 67 Cathnor Road, Hammersmith. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.4 ~~ Herbert Sendall Herbert was born in 1879, probably in Belgium or France. He returned to England with his family some time between 1882 and 1884. Herbert died in 1886 aged 7 years and he was buried at West Malling on 14th August 1886. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.5 ~~ James Arthur Sendall James was born at Brussels in 1882. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 7 Thorne Terrace, Barnes. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.6 ~~ Elizabeth Annette Sendall Elizabeth was born at Barnes on 26th December 1884. She was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 6th December 1885. She is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1891 census. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.7 ~~ May Maria B. Sendall May was born at Barnes in 1887 (Richmond Sy 1887 December qtr Volume 2a Page 386). The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 7 Thorne Terrace, Barnes. She was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1901 census. May married (possibly to Herbert M. McNeil) in 1910 (Kensington 1910 September qtr Volume 1a Page 358). 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.8 ~~ Oliver Edwin Sendall Oliver was born at Barnes in 1890 (Richmond Sy 1890 June qtr Volume 2a Page 378). The 1891 census records that the toddler was living with his family at 7 Thorne Terrace, Barnes. 1.3.5.2.2.1.6.4.9 ~~ Archibald Cyril Sendall Archibald was born at Barnes in 1892 (Richmond Sy 1892 September qtr Volume 2a Page 407). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at 67 Cathnor Road, Hammersmith. |
