At this stage they had no children but Thomas’ widowed father and two of his brothers were living with them. The ceremony was performed by Rev’d Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were George Pope and Clara King. David was the son of Thomas Asdown, a labourer, and he was born at Leybourne in 1860. David was probably the brother of Alfred Ashdown who married Emily’s cousin, Alice King at East Malling in 1875. David and Ellen had at least one child – Walter (1880). The 1881 census records that David was a bricklayer and he and his young family were living at London Road, Larkfield. Tragically Ellen died not long afterwards. William died before 1851 when he is mentioned in the will of his younger sister Peggy Alchin. However she left “one eighth part to the children of my deceased brother William Allchin” so he obviously married and had children. He may have married firstly Elizabeth Stammers at East Malling on 20th February 1802. Both were unmarried and parishioners of East Malling. The banns for their wedding were published on 31st January and 7th and 14th February 1802 and the witnesses were Richard Stammers and Mary Alchin, the groom’s sister. William and Elizabeth baptised seven children at Ryarsh – Ann (1802), William (1804), Stephen (1807), Jesse (1810), Phillis (1812), Susannah (1814) and Celia (1817). Elizabeth died sometime before 1818, possibly from complications from the birth of Phillis in 1812. It is likely that William subsequently married Elizabeth Coulter at East Malling on 15th November 1818. The marriage register records that William was a widower. The witnesses to their wedding were Henry Alchin (probably William’s youngest brother 1794 – 1854) and Robert Wagon. William and Elizabeth had at least four children – George (1821), twins John and Harriett (1825) and Eliza (1827). The three youngest children were baptised together in July 1827. There is no sign of Joseph and Ann Mercer in any English census and they may have emigrated. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2 ~~ William Alchin William was baptised at St Martin’s church, Ryarsh on 19th September 1804. He married his cousin Caroline Alchin at All Saints’ church, Maidstone on 17th November 1827 after the publishing of the banns. The ceremony was performed by Rev’d W.H. Miller and the witnesses were Henry Thomas Alchin and Susannah Alchin. Caroline was born at West Malling in 1808 (or 1812), probably the daughter of Henry and Sarah Alchin. (Note the birth of George to William and Caroline in 1834 is not proven but inferred for a number of reasons). The 1841 census records that William was a carpenter and he and his wife and their five children were living at High Street, West Malling. The 1851 census records that William and his family were still living at High Street, West Malling. William was a carpenter but now he was employing one man and one apprentice. The 1861 census records that William was a carpenter employing only the one man. William and Caroline and five of their children were still living at High Street, West Malling. The 1871 census records that William was a master carpenter and he was living with his wife and their two unmarried children at High Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that Caroline Alishin (sic), a 69 year old widow was still living at High Street, West Malling. Living with her were her two unmarried children. The 1871 census records that David was a master butcher and he and his very large family were living next door to his parents in law at High Street, Malling. Within the next few years David moved his family to London. The 1881 census records that he was still a master butcher and he and his wife and their four unmarried children were living at 4 Woodstock Terrace, Lee.
