At the time of his marriage Richard was employed as a labourer. Elizabeth was the 22 year old daughter of Maurice Dalton, a coal shipper. The 1871 census records that Richard was employed as an agricultural labourer and he and his wife were living at 18 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. It seems that the couple had no surviving children. However at the time of the census George Beckett was lodging with them. Later the same year George married Richard’s younger sister Harriett Alchin. It is possible that Richard is recorded in the 1881 census as a married labourer at 2 Salt Box Row, East Ham in Essex. There is no sign of his wife (who may have died) or any children however. Richard appears to have subsequently ‘married’ Susan although there is no evidence of such a marriage being registered; Susan was born at Horsmonden in 1846. The 1891 census records that Richard was a general labourer and he and his wife were living in one room at Nye’s Cottages, The Common, Rochester. Charles, who quite possibly was Ann’s distant cousin, was a 25 year old labourer, the son of the late Thomas Bevan and his wife Eliza. Charles Bevan was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 8th January 1843. The 1861 census records that Charles was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Mill Street, East Malling. Charles and Ann had at least four children – Harriett (1868), Horace (1873), Stephen (1877) and Arthur (1881). It seems likely that Charles and Ann separated in the late 1870’s. The 1881 census records that Ann and her children were living at High Street, West Malling. Charles Bevan is not recorded and he must have been away as Ann is not shown as a widow. Ann had two further children both of whom were born at Offham – William (1883) and Florence (1891).
