Celia married John Alexander Mills at Trottiscliffe on 22nd November 1840 (Malling 1840 December qtr Volume 5 Page 417); he was a labourer of Trottiscliffe (born at Stanstead in 1818) the son of John Mills a game-keeper. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd Edward Shepherd and the witnesses were John Higgins and William Wooding. John and Celia had at least five children William (1841), Emma (1843), Frank (1845), Thomas (1854) and Lily (1863). The 1841 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife, their infant son and his sister Mary were living at Stanstead. The 1861 census records that John was an agricultural labourer while Celia was a laundress. The couple and their four children were living at Birling Hill, Birling. The 1871 census records that John was a farm bailiff and he and his wife, three of their children and a niece (Elizabeth Baker who was born at Hadlow in 1856) were living at Paddlesworth near Snodland. The 1881 census records that John was a cement labourer and he and his wife were living alone at Hamhill, Birling. The 1891 census records that John was a cement labourer and he and his wife were living at Langside Cottage, Birling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.1 ~~ William Henry Mills William was born at Stanstead in 1841 and he was baptised at Stanstead on 15th August 1841. The 1841 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with his family at Stanstead. The 1861 census records that William was a game keeper and he was living with his parents at Birling Hill, Birling. William married Emma; she was born at Wrotham in 1844. William and Emma had at least ten children Amy (1862), Frank (1865), Alice (1867), Wyndham (1869), Rose (1870), Minnie (1872), Kate (1874), Sydney (1876), Bertie (1880) and Percy (1882). The 1871 census records that William was a game keeper and he and his wife and their five children were living at Birling Hill, Birling. The 1881 census records that Wyndham was a licensed victualler and he and his wife and their eight children were living at Chequers Public House, Farningham. The 1891 census records that William was a licensed victualler and he and his wife and their seven children were living at The Chequers, St Mary Cray Road, Eynsford. The 1901 census records that William was an innkeeper and he and his wife and their five children were living at The Chequers, Eynsford. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.1.1 ~~ Amy Mills Amy was born at Wrotham in 1862. The 1891 census records that Frank was an unmarried game keeper and he was lodging with Amos and Elizabeth Brooks at Shoreham. Frank married Amelia; she was born in London in 1864. Frank and Amelia had at least two children Rose (1896) and Alice (1900). The 1901 census records that Frank was a game keeper and he and his wife and their two children were living at Shacklands, Shoreham. Frank's youngest brother Percy was lodging with the family at the time. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.1.2.1 ~~ Rose Mills Rose was born at Shoreham in 1896. The 1871 census records that Frank was an unmarried gardener and he was living with his parents at Paddlesworth, Snodland. Frank married Ellen; she was born at Marylebone in London in 1845. Frank and Ellen had at least six children Frederick (1874), Willfrey (1878), Celia (1879), Eustace (1881), Artemus (1882) and Florence (1884). The 1881 census records that Frank was a market gardener and he and his wife and their three children were living at White Holt, Buckland in Dover. The 1891 census records that Frank was a market gardener and he and his wife and their five children were living at 15 Singlewell Road, Gravesend. The 1901 census records that Frank was a nursery gardener and he and his wife and their four children were living at 6 Christ Church Crescent, Gravesend. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.3.1 ~~ Frederick William Mills Frederick was born at Hadlow in 1874. The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at White Holt, Buckland in Dover. The 1891 census records that Frederick was living with his parents at 15 Singlewell Road, Gravesend. The 1901 census records that Frederick was an unmarried insurance agent and he was living with his parents at 6 Christ Church Crescent, Gravesend. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.3.2 ~~ Willfrey Thistle Mills Willfrey was born at Ditton in 1878 (Malling 1878 March qtr Volume 2a Page 552). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at White Holt, Buckland in Dover. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.3.3 ~~ Celia Eleanor Mills Celia was born at Buckland in 1879 (Dover 1879 December qtr Volume 2a Page 956). The 1881 census records that the toddler was living with her family at White Holt, Buckland in Dover. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 15 Singlewell Road, Gravesend. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.3.4 ~~ Eustace Augustus Mills Eustace was born at Buckland in 1881. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 15 Singlewell Road, Gravesend. The 1901 census records that Eustace was an apprentice upholsterer and he was living with his parents at 6 Christ Church Crescent, Gravesend. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.3.5 ~~ Artemis Albert Mills Artemis was born at Buckland in 1882 (Dover 1882 June qtr Volume 2a Page 980). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 15 Singlewell Road, Gravesend. The 1901 census records that Artemis was an apprentice plasterer and he was living with his parents at 6 Christ Church Crescent, Gravesend. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.3.6 ~~ Florence Esther Mills Florence was born at Ashford in 1884. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 15 Singlewell Road, Gravesend. The 1901 census records that Florence was a dressmaker and she was living with her parents at 6 Christ Church Crescent, Gravesend. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4 ~~ Thomas Mills Thomas was born at Birling in 1854. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Birling Hill, Birling. The 1871 census records that Thomas was a farm worker and he was living with his parents at Paddlesworth, Snodland. Thomas married Charlotte; she was born at Yalding in 1856. Thomas and Charlotte had at least seven children William (1876), Ambrose (1877), Beatrice (1879), Sydney 91881), Florence (1883), James (1892) and Bertram (1900). The 1881 census records that Thomas was a groom and he and his wife and their three young children were living at Severn Street, West Malling. The 1891 census records that Thomas was a coachman and he and his wife and their four children were living at 2 Bridge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Thomas was a bricklayer's labourer and he and his wife and their two youngest children were living at 5 Orchard Terrace, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.1 ~~ William George Mills William was born at West Malling in 1876 (Malling 1876 September qtr Volume 2a Page 549). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Severn Street, West Malling. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Bridge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.2 ~~ Ambrose John Mills Ambrose was born at West Malling in 1877 (Malling 1877 September qtr Volume 2a Page 532). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Severn Street, West Malling. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Bridge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Ambrose was a general labourer and he was boarding with Ben and Jane Banks at Fawkham Green. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.3 ~~ Beatrice Eunice Mills Beatrice was born at West Malling in 1879 (Malling 1879 June qtr Volume 2a Page 554). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Severn Street, West Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.4 ~~ Sydney Thomas Mills Sydney was born at West Malling in 1881 (Malling 1881 December qtr Volume 2a Page 594). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Bridge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.5 ~~ Florence May Mills Florence was born at West Malling in 1883 (Malling 1883 June qtr Volume 2a Page 595). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Bridge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.6 ~~ James Arthur B. Mills James was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1892 (Maidstone 1892 September qtr Volume 2a Page 729). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 5 Orchard Terrace, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.4.7 ~~ Bertram Ernest Mills Bertram was born at Maidstone in 1900 (Maidstone 1900 March qtr Volume 2a Page 820). The 1901 census records that the infant was living with his family at 5 Orchard Terrace, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.2.7.5 ~~ Lily Mills Lily was born at Birling in 1863. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Paddlesworth, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.2.8 ~~ George Richard Stammers Alchin George was baptised at St Martin's church, Ryarsh on 12th March 1821. There is no further sign of George and he quite possibly died in infancy. 1.3.5.2.2.2.9 ~~ John Alchin John and his twin sister Harriett were born at Springetts Hill on 9th October 1825. John was baptised with his two sisters, Eliza and Harriett, at St James' church, East Malling on 29th July 1827. John died at Springetts Hill aged 3 years and he was buried at East Malling on 7th December 1828. John's father had died five months previously. 1.3.5.2.2.2.10 ~~ Harriett Alchin Harriett and her twin brother John were born at Springetts Hill on 9th October 1825. She was baptised with her sister Eliza and brother John at St James' church, East Malling on 29th July 1827. 1.3.5.2.2.2.11 ~~ Eliza Alchin Eliza was born at Springetts Hill, probably in mid 1827. She was baptised with her sister Harriett and brother John at St James' church, East Malling on 29th July 1827. At the time of the 1841 census Eliza may have been a servant for her wealthy kinswoman Susannah Alchin at Mill Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.3 ~~ Robert Alchin Robert was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 9th November 1783. Robert probably married Fanny Baker at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 12th April 1807. The marriage register records that both were living at Maidstone at the time. Fanny was born at Aylesford in 1787. Robert and Fanny had at least ten children Frances (1808), William (1811), Robert (1813), Elizabeth (1815), Benjamin (1817), Henry (1819), Thomas (1822), Richard (1824), John (1826) and James (1828). The baptism registers record Robert as a "labourer in husbandry". The 1841 census records that Robert was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife, five of their children and a grandson were living at Birling. The 1851 census records that Robert was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their four unmarried sons were living at 5 Hamill Street, Birling. Robert was named Executor of the Will of his sister Peggy Alchin when she died in April 1851. He was also left a one eighth share of her estate. Robert died at Hamhill on 24th September 1852 aged 68 years and he was buried at Birling on 30th September 1852. The 1861 and 1871 census both record that the widowed Fanny was a retired laundress and she was living at Hamhill, Birling with her son Richard Alchin and his family. Fanny died aged 86 years and she was buried at Birling on 25th August 1872 (Malling 1872 September qtr Volume 2a Page 283).
1.3.5.2.2.3.1 ~~ Frances Alchin Frances was probably born at East Malling or Aylesford in about 1808. Frances died aged 17 years and she was buried at Birling on 6th November 1825. 1.3.5.2.2.3.2 ~~ William Alchin William was born on 13th April 1810 and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 12th May 1811. William enlisted in the 4th Regiment of Foot at an unknown date although he probably joined at about the same time as his cousin John Alchin of Leybourne. He was posted with his regiment to New South Wales where they became guards for the convicts working on the road gangs. William died aged only 22 years in the Bathurst Barracks west of Sydney. He had the rank of Private. John was buried at Bathurst by Rev'd John Keane on 20th May 1833 (NSW V1833639 17). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3 ~~ Robert Alchin Robert was baptised at All Saints' church, Birling on 5th September 1813. He married Frances Sarah Johnson; she was born at Gillingham, Kent in 1811 and she was the daughter of John and Mary Ann Johnson. Her father was employed as a tree nail maker in the dockyards. At the time of his marriage Robert was a shoemaker of Ham Mill (later known as Hamhill) near Birling. Robert and Frances had at least two children Frances (1837) and Robert (1838). Robert II died, aged only 24 years (Malling 1838 March qtr Volume 5 Page 292), shortly before his son Robert III was born. Robert was buried at Birling on 4th March 1838. The 1841 census records that Frances was a servant employed by George and Elizabeth Baker (possibly related to her mother in law) at Leybourne. Her young son was living with his paternal grandparents at Birling. The 1851 census records that the widowed Frances and her son, named after his father, were living with her in-laws at 5 Hamill Street, Birling. Frances was employed as a nurse and she subsequently married Henry Ingram at Birling on 5th November 1855 (Malling 1855 December qtr Volume 2a Page 570). Frances died within a few months aged only 46 years and she was buried at Birling on 16th March 1856. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.1 ~~ Frances Mary Alchin Frances was born in early 1837, possibly illegitimately. Frances died at Hamhill aged 14 weeks and she was buried at Birling on 28th May 1837. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2 ~~ Robert John Alchin Robert was born at Birling in 1838 (Malling 1838 June qtr Volume 5 Page 307) and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Birling on 6th May 1838. He was born shortly after the death of his father after whom he was named. The 1841 census records that Robert was living at Birling with his grandparents while his mother was working at Leybourne as a servant. The 1851 census records that he and his widowed mother were living with his paternal grandparents at Birling. Robert married Frances Norris at West Malling on 12th November 1855 (Malling 1855 December qtr Volume 2a Page 580). The ceremony was performed by Rev'd William Fox and the witnesses were Mary Lee and John Binstead. Frances was born at West Malling on 28th November 1837, the daughter of Joseph Norris and Elizabeth Williams. Robert and Frances had at least thirteen children Lissey (1857), Robert (1859), Alban (1861), William (1863), Matilda (1865), Alma (1867), Avis (1869) Rebecca (1870), Agnes (1872), Alice (1875), Ada (1876), Arthur (1879) and Herbert (1881). The 1861 census records that Robert was employed as a general labourer. He and his wife and their young son were living at Back Street, West Malling. The 1871 census records that Robert was a labourer and he and his wife and six of their children were still living at the same address. The 1881 census records that Robert was employed as an agricultural labourer and he and his family were still living at Back Street, West Malling. Robert died aged 46 years (Malling 1885 March qtr Volume 2a Page 415) and he was buried at Birling on 3rd April 1885. His family seem to have moved to Greenwich almost straight away after his death. The 1891 census records that Frances was working as a nurse and she and her youngest surviving son were living at 19 Tuskar Street, Greenwich (opposite her married daughter Alma Scarff). Frances may have died in 1923 aged 86 years (Croydon 1923 December qtr Volume 2a Page 452). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.1 ~~ Lissey Frances Alchin Lissey was born at West Malling on 10th February 1857 (Malling 1857 March qtr Volume 2a Page 247) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 21st February 1857. The 1861 census records that Lissey was living at Back Street, West Malling with her maternal grandparents, Joseph and Elizabeth Norris. Lissey is not recorded with the rest of her family in 1871 and she may have gone into service. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.2 ~~ Robert John Alchin Robert was born at West Malling on 7th April 1859 (Malling 1859 June qtr Volume 2a Page 356) and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 18th April 1859. The 1861 census records that Robert was living with his family at Back Street, West Malling. The 1871 census records that Robert was a school boy and he was living with his family at Back Street, West Malling. He does not appear in any subsequent census and it seems likely that he joined the Army or Navy. Robert died at Greenwich in 1904 aged 45 years (Greenwich 1904 March qtr Volume 1d Page 665). He does not appear to have ever married. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.3 ~~ Alban Thomas Alchin Alban was born at West Malling on 13th October 1861 (Malling 1861 December qtr Volume 2a Page *81) and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 24th November 1861. Alban died in 1862 aged about 14 months and he was buried at West Malling on 21st December 1862 (Malling 1862 December qtr Volume 2a Page 252). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.4 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was born at West Malling on 13th November 1863 (Malling 1863 December qtr Volume 2a Page 419) and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 27th December 1863. The 1871 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his family at Back Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that William was employed as a milk boy and he was living at High Street, Snodland. William married Alice Bond in late 1890 (Greenwich 1890 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1556); she was born at Deptford in 1864. William and Alice had at least two children Alice (1891) and George (1897). The 1891 census records that the newly married couple were living alone (Alice was pregnant with their first child) at 45 Calvert Road, Greenwich. William was employed as a general labourer. The 1901 census records that William was employed as a gas stoker and he and his wife and their two children were boarding with William and Jane Bond at 2 Pleasant Place, Greenwich. Alice died in 1927 aged 62 years (Greenwich 1927 December qtr Volume 1d Page 995). William died in 1936 aged 73 years (Greenwich 1936 December qtr Volume 1d Page 913). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.4.1 ~~ Alice Jane Alchin Alice was born at Greenwich in 1891 (Greenwich 1891 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1098). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Pleasant Place, Greenwich. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.4.2 ~~ George Thomas Alchin George was born at Greenwich in 1897 (Greenwich 1897 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1129). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 2 Pleasant Place, Greenwich. George probably died in 1963 aged 65 years (Greenwich 1963 March qtr Volume 5c Page 937). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.5 ~~ Matilda Jane Alchin Matilda was born at West Malling on 8th December 1865 (Malling 1865 December qtr Volume 2a Page 447). She was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 20th January 1866. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Back Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that Matilda was still at school and she was living with her 83 year old widowed grandmother Elizabeth Norris at Back Street, West Malling. Matilda married George Wellington Garrett at Greenwich in 1886 (Greenwich 1886 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1463). George was born at Madras in 1856 and he was employed as a clerk by the Royal Navy. George and Matilda had at least four children Ada (1891), Ivan (1893), Constance (1896) and Faith (1898). George moved his family around the various ports of England in his job working for the Navy. The family probably spent some time overseas in one of England's colonies and they are not recorded in the 1891 English census. The 1901 census records that George was working at the RN Ordnance Depot at Greenwich and he and his family were living at 76 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.5.1 ~~ Ada J. Garrett Ada was born at Liverpool in Lancashire in 1891. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at 76 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.5.2 ~~ Ivan W. Garrett Ivan was born at Wallhamston in Essex in 1893 (West Ham 1893 June qtr Volume 4a Page 339). The 1901 census records that Ivan was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 76 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.5.3 ~~ Constance Garrett Constance was born at Kensington in London in 1896 (Lambeth 1896 March qtr Volume 1d Page 473). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at 76 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.5.4 ~~ Faith Grace Garrett Faith was born at Clapham in London in 1898 (Lambeth 1898 December qtr Volume 1d Page 431). The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at 76 Glenforth Road, Greenwich. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.6 ~~ Alma Emma Alchin Alma was born at West Malling on 23rd March 1867 (Malling 1867 June qtr Volume 2a Page 463) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 28th April 1867. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Back Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that she was a school girl living with her family at West Malling. Alma married Thomas Charles Scarff at Greenwich in 1886 (Greenwich 1886 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1441). Thomas was born at Greenwich in 1866. Thomas and Alma had at least eight children William (1887), Alma (1889), Maud (1890), Rose (1892), Thomas (1893), May (1895), Daisy (1897) and Alfred (1899). The 1891 census records that Thomas was a lighterman (bargeman). He and his wife and their three eldest children were living at 18 Tusker Street, Greenwich (Alma's mother was living across the road at No. 19). The 1901 census records that Thomas was employed as a lighterman. He and his numerous family were living at 408 Rotherhithe Street, Rotherhithe. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.6.1 ~~ William Thomas Scarff William was born at Greenwich in 1887 (Greenwich 1887 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1134). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 18 Tusker Street, Greenwich. The 1901 census records that William was employed as a "port messenger" and he was living with his family at 408 Rotherhithe Street, Rotherhithe. The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 408 Rotherhithe Street, Rotherhithe. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.7 ~~ Avis Ellen Alchin Avis was born at West Malling on 23rd February 1869 (Malling 1869 March qtr Volume 2a Page 533) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 19th March 1869. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Back Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her family at West Malling. The 1891 census records that Avis was employed as a cook by Charles Davidson of 58 South Street, Greenwich. Avis married either William Jones or George Waghorn in 1894 (Greenwich 1894 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1215). She is not recorded under either surname in the 1901 English census. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.8 ~~ Rebecca Alchin Rebecca was born at West Malling on 24th June 1870 and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 2nd August 1870 (Malling 1870 September qtr Volume 2a Page 491). The 1871 census records that the 9 month old infant was living with her family at Back Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her family at West Malling. There is no surviving record of Rebecca in the 1891 census. Rebecca may have married either Francis Cecil Beck or Francis Walter Weekes in 1898 (Lambeth 1898 June qtr Volume 1d Page 916). Rebecca is not recorded under either surname in the 1901 English census. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9 ~~ Agnes Elizabeth Alchin Agnes was born at West Malling on 11th November 1872 (Malling 1872 December qtr Volume 2a Page 510) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 29th December 1872. The 1881 census records that she was a school girl living with her family at West Malling. Agnes married William John Medhurst at Christ Church, Greenwich on 19th June 1892 (Greenwich 1892 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1563). William was born at North Pole Lane, Greenwich on 24th December 1867, the son of James Medhurst and Anne Whittle. At the time of their marriage Agnes was living at 19 Tusker Street, Greenwich (her mother's address in the 1891 census) and William was a journeyman malster living with his uncle and aunt at 18 Grove Place, Royal Hill. William and Agnes had at least three children Annie (1892), Elsie (1895) and George (1899). The 1901 census records that William was employed as a general labourer in a granary. He and his young family were living at 36 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. In 1913 William was a labourer and he and his family were living at 20 Nelson Grove Road, Merton. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.1 ~~ Annie Elizabeth Medhurst Annie was born at Greenwich on 30th December 1892 (Greenwich 1893 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1148). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 36 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. Annie married Frederick Langley at Merton on 29th June 1913; he was born at Streatham on 7th August 1892 the son of Alfred Langley and Henrietta Maria Freeman. Frederick and Annie had at least four children Elsie (1913), Annie (1915), Florence (1917) and Frederick (1919). Frederick was a pigeon fancier and in later life he worked as an Iron Works Foreman. In 1939 he and his family were living at 43 Homefield Gardens, Mitcham in Surrey. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.1.1 ~~ Elsie Gwendoline Annie Langley Elsie was born at Mitcham on 16th September 1913. She married John Douglas in 1940. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.1.2 ~~ Annie Georgina Langley Annie was born at Mitcham on 23rd April 1915. She married Edward Leonard Whitethread in 1937. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.1.3 ~~ Florence May Langley Florence was born at Mitcham on 12th May 1917. Florence died on 18th April 1941 aged only 23 years. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.1.4 ~~ Frederick George Langley Frederick, known as Jim, was born at Mitcham on 14th August 1919. Jim never married. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.2 ~~ Elsie Maud Medhurst Elsie was born at Greenwich on 30th June 1895 (Greenwich 1895 September qtr Volume 1d Page 1112). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 36 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. Elsie married Charles (known as Henry) A. Johns at Croydon in 1920. Henry and Elsie had at least two children Doris and Charles. Henry was a warder at Wandsworth Prison and he also ran a limousine business. He and his family lived at 28 Longley Road, Tooting in South London. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.9.3 ~~ George Albert Medhurst George was born at Greenwich in 1899 (Greenwich 1899 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1154). The 1901 census records that he was living with his family at 36 Glenforth Street, Greenwich. George married Winifred G. Avery at Croydon in 1923. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.10 ~~ Alice Alchin Alice was born at West Malling on 24th January 1875 (Malling 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 522) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 3rd February 1875. Alice probably died a couple of weeks later and she was buried at West Malling on 7th February 1875 (Malling 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 372). She is not recorded with her family in the 1881 census which confirms her death. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.11 ~~ Ada Elizabeth Alchin Ada was born at West Malling on 10th March 1876 (Malling 1876 June qtr Volume 2a Page 550) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 15th April 1876. Ada died the following year aged 10 months and she was buried at West Malling on 9th January 1877 (Malling 1877 March qtr Volume 2a Page 317). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.12 ~~ Arthur Thomas Alchin Arthur was born at West Malling on 5th March 1879 (Malling 1879 June qtr Volume 2a Page 550). The 1881 census records that the toddler was living with his family at West Malling. Arthur married an unknown woman and they had at least one child Lesley (1903). 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.12.1 ~~ Lesley Mary Alchin Lesley was born in 1903 (Malling 1903 March qtr Volume 2a Page 765). Lesley married Tom Lucas. When she died Lesley was buried at Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.3.3.2.13 ~~ Herbert Joseph Alchin Herbert was born at West Malling on 21st February 1881 (Malling 1881 March qtr Volume 2a Page 612). He was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 27th March 1881. The 1881 census records that he was 2 months old and the infant boy was living with his family at West Malling. Herbert died on 22nd October 1882 aged 20 months (Malling 1882 December qtr Volume 2a Page 333). 1.3.5.2.2.3.4 ~~ Elizabeth Alchin Elizabeth was baptised at Birling on 6th August 1815. Elizabeth was a witness at the wedding of her younger brother Henry at Birling in 1840. The 1841 census records that Elizabeth was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Hamhill, Birling. Elizabeth married William Chapman at Lion Chapel, Brewer Street, Maidstone on 5th August 1843 (Maidstone 1843 September qtr Volume 5 Page 362). The wedding ceremony was celebrated by Richard Pingree (?) according to the "Countess of Huntingdon's Connection". The witnesses were Thomas Chitty and John Kemp.
William Chapman was born at Aylesford in 1814, the son of John Chapman (a waterman who was born at East Malling in 1790) and his wife Mary. William and Elizabeth had at least seven children George (1844), Elizabeth (1845), William (1847), Frances (1850), Louisa (1853), Harriett (1857) and Celia (1860). The 1851 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their four young children were living near his parents at Aylesford. The 1861 census records that William was a brick burner and he and his wife and their seven children were living at Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that William was a brickburner and he and his wife and six of their children were living at Forstal near Boxley. However William is also recorded as a 'lunatic.' He must have been committed to an asylum in the following years as the 1881 census records that Elizabeth was still married but just she and her two unmarried daughters were living at 97 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that Elizabeth was now widowed. She was living with her married daughter Harriett Jesshope at Mill Cottage, Higham near Strood. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.1 ~~ George Chapman George was born at Aylesford in 1844. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Aylesford. The 1861 census records that George was a brick burner and he was living with his parents at Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that George was unmarried and he was living with his parents at Forstal near Boxley. The 1901 census records that William was still a bachelor and he was working as a labourer in the brickfields. He was living with his cousins Robert and Emily Dale and their family at 14 Arundel Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.3.2 ~~ Clara Chapman Clara was born at Maidstone in 1876. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 29 Forstal, Boxley. The 1891 census records that Clara was living with her parents at 8 Canning Street, East Maidstone. The 1901 census records that Clara was unmarried (no occupation is recorded) and she was living at 1 Harrison Avenue, Chatham with another young girl Ada Pugh. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.3.3 ~~ James Thomas Chapman James was born at Boxley in 1882. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Canning Street, East Maidstone. James joined the Royal Navy in the mid to late 1890's. The 1901 census records that James was a stoker on board HMS "Royal Oak" which was in harbour at Valetta, Malta. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.4 ~~ Frances Ann Chapman Frances was born at Aylesford in 1850 (Maidstone 1850 March qtr Volume 5 Page 383). The 1851 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Aylesford. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that Frances was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Forstal near Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.5 ~~ Louisa Chapman Louisa was born at Aylesford in 1853 (Malling 1853 June qtr Volume 2a Page 290). The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that Louisa was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Forstal near Boxley. The 1881 census records that Louisa was an unmarried dress maker and she was living with her mother at 97 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.6 ~~ Harriett Chapman Harriett was born at Aylesford in 1857 (Malling 1857 September qtr Volume 2a Page 337). The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Forstal near Boxley. The 1881 census records that Harriett was an unmarried paper maker and she was living with her mother at 97 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. Harriett married James H. Jesshope; he was born at Maidstone in 1860. The 1891 census records that James was a general labourer and he and his wife and her mother were living at Mill Cottage, Strood. The 1901 census records that James was a builder's labourer and he and his wife were living alone at 137 Galleywall Road, Rotherhithe. The couple do not appear to have had any surviving children. 1.3.5.2.2.3.4.7 ~~ Celia Ann Chapman Celia was born at Aylesford in 1860 (Malling 1860 September qtr Volume 2a Page 357). The 1861 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Forstal near Boxley. The 1881 census records that Celia was an unmarried servant and she was working for the Payne family at Brickfields, West Malling. |
