Volume 3 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings. By Steve Green (continued)

Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued)

1.3.5.2.2.3.5  ~~  Benjamin Alchin

Benjamin was baptised at All Saints' church, Birling on 6th August 1817. Benjamin was a witness at the wedding of his younger brother at Birling in 1840. The 1841 census records that Benjamin was an unmarried shoemaker and he was living with his parents at Hamhill, Birling. He married Susan Clifton at Dartford on 22nd October 1843 (Dartford 1843 December qtr Volume 5 Page 183). Susan was born at St Mary Cray in about 1824.

Benjamin and Susan had at least nine children – George (1844), Sarah (1847), Ruth (1849), William (1852), Albert (1853), Arthur (1856), Lewis (1858), Alice (1861) and Ernest (1864). Parish registers record that Benjamin was still a shoemaker. Benjamin moved his family from St Mary Cray to East Malling in about 1853. The 1861 census records that Benjamin was a shoe and boot maker. He and Susan and their eight children were living at Larkfield, East Malling.

The 1871 census records that Benjamin was a shoemaker and he and his wife and five of their children were living at 7 High Street, East Malling. Thereafter Benjamin and his wife disappear from the records in England and they evidently migrated to Canada in the 1870s. The 1891 Canadian census records that Benjamin was a factory hand and he and his wife and their daughter Ruth were living at South Oshawa, Ontario.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.1  ~~  George Alchin

George was born at St Mary's Cray in 1844 (Bromley 1844 September qtr Volume 5 Page 55). The 1861 census records that George was a boot and shoe maker and he was living with his parents at Larkfield, East Malling. At the time of his marriage he was a shoemaker of Aylesford.

George married Elizabeth King at St James' church East Malling on 14th November 1864 (Malling 1864 December qtr Volume 2a Page 768). The witnesses to the ceremony were Hannah Lands and John King. Elizabeth was born in 1844 and she was the daughter of John King, a labourer of East Malling, and his wife Elizabeth.

George either died or he and Elizabeth separated. Elizabeth had at least two children and the parish register describes her as single woman – Harold (1871) and Isabel (1875). The 1871 census records that Elizabeth was widowed and she was working in the paper mill. She and her infant son were living with her parents at New Hythe Lane, East Malling.

Elizabeth may have died before 1881 or perhaps she remarried. Neither she nor George are recorded in the census of that year and the children were living with their maternal grandparents at East Malling. However it seems likely that George died at Mill Street aged 58 years and he was buried at East Malling on 28th August 1902 (Malling 1902 September qtr Volume 2a Page 373). If it was him - where had he been in the intervening years?

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.1.1  ~~  Harold Hastings Alchin

Harold was born at Larkfield in 1870 (Malling 1870 September qtr Volume 2a Page 432). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 4th September 1870. The 1871 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with his 'widowed' mother and his grandparents at New Hythe Lane, East Malling.

The 1881 census records that Harold was a school boy and he was living with his maternal grandparents at New Hithe Road, East Malling. The census of 1891 records that he was still living with his grandparents at Church Street, East Malling and he was employed as a paper mill labourer.

Harold married Eliza Whiffen in 1896 (Malling 1896 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1175); she was born at Rotherham in 1868. They had at least two children – Alice (1897) and Edith (1898). The 1901 census records that Harold was employed as a dryerman in a paper mill. He and his young family were living at New Road, Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire.

Harold lived into very old age. He died in 1962 aged 93 years (Thanet 1962 September qtr Volume 5b Page 795).

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.1.1.1  ~~  Alice Dora Alchin

Alice was born at East Malling in 1897 (Malling 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 678). The 1901 census records that she was living with her parents at New Road, Rickmansworth.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.1.1.2  ~~  Edith Ruth  Alchin

Edith was born at East Malling in 1898 (Malling 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 657). The 1901 census records that she was living with her parents at New Road, Rickmansworth.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.1.2  ~~  Isabel Alchin

Isabel was born at East Malling in 1875 (Malling 1875 June qtr Volume 2a Page 510) and it seems quite possible that George Alchin was not her father (the 1871 census records that her mother was widowed). The 1881 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her maternal grandparents at New Hithe Road, East Malling.

The 1891 census records that Isabel was living with her grandparents at Church Street, East Malling. Isabel migrated to Canada in 1896. She arrived at Portland, Maine in March 1896 aboard the SS 'Mongolian' with her final destination being Whitby, Ontario.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.2  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah was born at St Mary Cray in 1847 (Bromley 1847 March qtr Volume 5 Page 63). The 1861 census records that Sarah was living with her parents at Larkfield, East Malling. The 1871 census records that Sarah was employed as a domestic servant. She was unmarried and she was living with her parents at 7 High Street, East Malling.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.3  ~~  Ruth Alchin

Ruth was born at St Mary Cray in about 1849 (Malling 1849 September qtr Volume 5 Page 60). The 1861 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her parents at Larkfield, East Malling. Ruth emigrated to Canada with her parents in the 1870's. The 1891 Canadian census records that Ruth was a spinster and she was living with her parents at South Oshawa, Ontario.

Ruth moved on to the United States in 1905. The 1910 US census records that Ruth was still a spinster. She was working as a housekeeper for Richard Pengilly at Park River, Walsh County, New York.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.4  ~~  William Alchin

William was born at St Mary Cray in 1852 although the 1881 census gives his birthplace as East Malling. The 1861 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at Larkfield, East Malling. William is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1871 census.

The 1881 census records that William was an unmarried painter. He was a patient in a hospital in London – an illness caused by lead poisoning perhaps. William may have died later that year at the age of 30 years (Malling 1881 September qtr Volume 2a Page 287).

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.5  ~~  Albert William Alchin

Albert was born at Larkfield on 10th January 1853 (Malling 1853 March qtr Volume 2a Page 324) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 20th November 1853. The 1861 census records that Albert was a school boy and he was living with his family at Larkfield, East Malling. He is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1871 census and he may have already joined the Merchant Marine (Seaman ID 73926).

Albert subsequently joined the Royal Navy and he seems to have gained fairly swift promotion. The 1881 census records that he was the 'Captain of the Foretop' aboard the boys training vessel HMS "St Vincent" then located at Portsmouth. Albert married Jane Wilson in 1883 (Chertsey 1883 December qtr Volume 2a Page 84); Jane was born at Tenterden in 1847.

The 1901 census records that Albert was employed as a jobbing gardener and he and his wife were living at Chapel Road, Chertsey in Surrey. Albert may have died in 1923 aged '70' years (Wandsworth 1923 December qtr Volume 1d page 478).

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.6  ~~  Arthur Alchin

Arthur was born at Larkfield on 28th January 1856 (Malling 1856 March qtr Volume 2a Page 354) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 23rd March 1856. The 1861 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at Larkfield, East Malling.

The 1871 census records that Arthur was working as an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at 7 High Street, East Malling. Arthur emigrated to Canada in 1872. Arthur married Ellen Taylor at Chaffey, Ontario on 27th April 1882. She was born in England on 5th February 1862, the daughter of John and Amelia Taylor, and she emigrated to Canada in 1873.

Arthur and Ellen had at least eight children – Alice (1883), Francis (1885), Harold (1887), Mabel (1888), Clifton (1891), Ruby (1894), Ethel (1896) and Edwin (1897). The 1901 Canadian census records that Arthur was employed as a gardener for 7 months of the year and worked at other jobs for the rest of the year (winter?). He and his large family were living at Huntsville in the District of Muskoka and Parry Sound (near Lake Huron in the Great Lakes), Onatario.

Arthur died at Huntsville on 26th February 1931 aged 75 years.

1.3.5.2.2.3.5.6.1  ~~  Alice Alchin

The witnesses to their wedding were Benjamin and Elizabeth Alchin. Neither Henry nor his wife were recorded in the 1841 or any subsequent census in the Mallings district.

Henry and his wife may have emigrated although there is no trace in any of the migration lists overseas. Perhaps they died in a shipwreck or from disease on their way to a new life.

1.3.5.2.2.3.7  ~~  Thomas Alchin

The 1901 census records that Alfred was still the licensee of the "Freemason's Arms" at Brooks Lane, Birling. Lodging with the couple was 73 year old Richard Alchin of Birling.

The 1881 census records that she was a school girl living with her family at Horn Street, Birling. At the time it would have been unusual for a 16 year old girl from a working class family to have still been at school. It is likely therefore that she would have become a teacher or similar.
