Volume 3 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings. By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued) 1.3.5.2.2.4.2.3 ~~ William H. Warner William was born at West Malling in 1837 and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 21st January 1838. The 1841 census records that William was living with his mother and his grandparents at Well Street, East Malling. The 1851 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his widowed mother at Mill Street, East Malling. Ten years later the 1861 census records that William was employed as an agricultural labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his mother at 29 Mill Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.4.3 ~~ John Alchin John was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 28th January 1812. Before enlisting in the British Army John was employed as an ostler. He was a witness at his sister's wedding to John Warner at East Malling in February 1831. John enlisted in the 4th Regiment of Foot (for which he was paid a bounty of 3 pounds) at Rochester on 14th November 1831. John was attested by the Mayor of Rochester , Edward Manclark. The recruiting officer was Private Edward Russell of the Royal Marines. John's attestation papers provide the following physical description of him: Age 20 years and 9 months; Height: 5 feet 7 inches; Complexion: Fair; Blue eyes and brown hair. He was given the rank of Private and regimental number 1013. John served in the regiment for nearly 21 years, including 5 years in New South Wales and 11 years in the East Indies. John was promoted to Corporal on 22nd January 1840 and to Sergeant on 16th December 1841. He received a Good Conduct badge on 18th July 1839. During his military service in New South Wales, John married Margaret Lawlor at St James' church, Cumberland on 15th February 1837 (NSW 1837 Volume 21 Folio 1453). John had the consent of his Commanding Officer and the couple were married by banns by Rev'd Robert Cartwright. The witnesses were John Girling, Margaret Kenna and William Beaver. Both the bride and groom were residents of the parish of St Philip, Sydney. Margaret was born at Castlelost, County Westmeath, Ireland in 1813 and she was probably either the daughter of a soldier or the daughter of a convict (more research is required). There are no surviving records of them baptising any children in New South Wales and it is quite possible that John's regiment was moved to India not long afterwards. If they did have children then it would be no surprise if they did not survive the Indian climate. The 1851 census records that John was a Sergeant in the 4th Regiment of Foot and he and his wife were living at Granby Barracks, Devonport. John was discharged from the Army at Chatham at the age of 42 years on 20th November 1852. He suffered from lumbago which he contracted in 1851 while stationed at the Army camp at Weedon in Northamptonshire. The medical board which examined him were of the opinion that "his disability is chiefly attributable to length of his general, and much of tropical, service. Unfit for further Regimental service – his disability has not been aggravated by any vice or misconduct". John indicated on his discharge papers that he intended to settle at Exeter in Devon. The 1861 census records that John was a Staff Sergeant in the Militia. He and his wife and his 8 year old niece Harriett Alchin were living at Shrubbery Lodge, Claines in Worcestershire. The 1891 census records that John was a pensioner and he and his wife were living at 23 Scrope Street, Barton St Marys, Gloucestershire.
