There is no sign of the couple in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 English census and it is quite likely that they emigrated. 1.3.5.2.2.5.5 ~~ Caroline Alchin Caroline was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 5th November 1820. 1.3.5.2.2.5.6 ~~ Richard Alchin Richard was born at St James' church, East Malling on 5th May 1822. 1.3.5.2.2.5.7 ~~ Eliza Alchin Eliza was born at East Malling on 18th January 1824. 1.3.5.2.2.5.8 ~~ Emily Alchin Emily was born at East Malling on 26th November 1826. Also working there was his 17 year old cousin Sarah Alchin the daughter of Henry and Sarah Alchin. Sometime after 1851 Adam married Elizabeth (possibly Saunders); she was born at Plaxtol, Kent in about 1830. Their children were no longer living with them and they had probably either married or died. The 1891 census records that Adam was living at High Street, East Malling. His wife was away and they had a lodger staying at the house, George Fewell, a 21 year old baker from Hertfordshire. Elizabeth may have died in 1899 aged 70 years (Malling 1899 December qtr Volume 2a Page 447). The 1901 census records that Adam was retired and widowed. He was living with the family of his daughter Mary Smith at 10 Barnwell Road, Lambeth. Adam died the following year aged 74 years (Lambeth 1902 March qtr Volume 1d Page 302). 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.1 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was born at Wrotham in 1852 (Malling 1852 December qtr Volume 2a Page 322). The 1861 census records that Mary was a school girl and she was living with her family at Shipbourne Lane, Wrotham. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were Adam Alchin and Emma Keeble. Sydney Smith was born at London in 1854 the son of the late John Smith who was a valet. At the time of his marriage Sydney was a glover and he was living at St James, Picadilly. Sydney and Mary had three children Sydney (1880), William (1881) and Violet (1885). The 1901 census records that Sydney was employed as a painter and glazier. He and his family were living at 10 Barnwell Road, Lambeth. 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.1.1 ~~ Sydney Smith Sydney was born in London in 1880. The 1901 census records that Sydney was employed as an auctioneer's clerk and he lived with his parents at 10 Barnwell Road, Lambeth. 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.1.2 ~~ William Smith William was born in London in 1881. The 1901 census records that William was employed as a warehouse clerk. He lived with his parents at 10 Barnwell Road, Lambeth. 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.1.3 ~~ Violet Smith Violet was born at London in 1885. The 1901 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her parents at 10 Barnwell Road, Lambeth. 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.2 ~~ Richard Alchin Richard was born at Wrotham in early 1857 (Malling 1857 June qtr Volume 2a Page 332) and he was baptised at Plaxtol on 3rd May 1857. The 1861 census records that Richard was living with his family at Shipbourne Lane, Wrotham. The 1871 census records that Richard was living with his family at 7 Three Colt Lane, Bethnal Green. Richard married Elizabeth Ann Vigor at Lambeth in 1886 (Lambeth 1886 June qtr Volume 1d Page 557); she was born at Sandhurst in 1854. Richard and Elizabeth had at least one child Leonard (1888). The 1901 census records that Richard was a grocer, wine and beer merchant. He and his wife and their son were living at 51 The Vineyard, Richmond in Surrey. Richard died in 1926 aged 68 years (London C 1926 March qtr Volume 1c Page 2). Elizabeth died in 1936 aged 83 years (Brentford 1936 March qtr Volume 3a Page 176). 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.2.1 ~~ Leonard Victor Alchin Leonard was born at Chiswick, Middlesex in 1888 (Brentford 1888 June qtr Volume 3a Page 123). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his parents at 51 The Vineyard, Richmond. Leonard served in the British Army during World War One in the Paymaster Department and he rose to the rank of Captain. Leonard died in 1962 aged 74 years (Woolwich 1962 December qtr Volume 5h Page 773). 1.3.5.2.2.5.10.3 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was baptised at Plaxtol on 15th August 1861 (Malling 1861 September qtr Volume 2a Page 385). He is not recorded with his family in the 1871 census. William may actually have died almost straight after his baptism (Malling 1861 September qtr Volume 2a Page 242). 1.3.5.2.2.5.11 ~~ Stephen Alchin Stephen was born at East Malling in about 1830. There is no surviving record of his baptism. The 1841 census records that Stephen was living with his parents at Rocks Street, East Malling. The 1851 census records that Stephen was unmarried. He was living at The Street, Wateringbury where he was working as a servant to a baker. Stephen may have married either Ann or Elizabeth Latter in 1854 (Milton 1854 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1013). The 1871 census records that Stephen was in prison in London. His trade was given as baker and he was imprisoned at Millbank Prison, Westminster (his crime and sentence at this stage is unknown). I have found no further record of this man and he may have changed his name or emigrated when he was released. 1.3.5.2.2.6 ~~ Peggy Alchin Peggy was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 6th February 1791. Peggy appears to have spent much of her life working as a servant for her wealthy cousin, Henry Alchin (1.1.3.8.3) a miller of East Malling. When Henry died in 1839 he bequeathed Peggy an annuity and some of his belongings:
The 1841 census records that Peggy was living at East Malling with 13 year old Sarah Alchin who was probably the niece referred to in her will. It appears that Peggy never married. Peggy was a witness to the codicil of her cousin Susannah Alchin at East Malling on 8th November 1842. The 1851 census records that Peggy was living with her sister (or sister-in-law) at Wrotham. It describes Peggy as "former servant (now independent)"; this independence had obviously come from her cousin's legacy. Shortly after the census was taken Peggy died at Plaxtol , Kent in April 1851. Peggy left a will on which probate was granted on 21st June 1851. She divided her estate into eight equal parts as follows:
1.3.5.2.2.7 ~~ Henry Alchin Henry was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 17th May 1794. He married Elizabeth Hawks at East Malling on 5th November 1810. They had at least one child Eliza (1813). Henry was a witness at the wedding of his elder brother William at East Malling in 1818 to Elizabeth Coulter. The parish register in 1813 records that Henry was a labourer of East Malling. Henry's wife, Elizabeth must have also died before 1820. Henry married Sarah Pankhurst at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 13th July 1820. The witnesses to the ceremony were John Pankhurst and Robert Casson. Henry and Sarah had a further eleven children Henry (1821), William (1823), Mary (1825), Sarah (1827), Jane (1829), Margaret (1831), John (1834), Robert (1836), Daniel (1839), Ann (1843) and Phillis (1845). The parish records show that Henry Alchin was either a labourer or a carrier. The 1841 census records that Henry was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and seven of their children were living at East Malling. Henry's second wife died before 1851. The census of that year records that he was a widowed "dealer in coals" and he was living with nine of his children at Larkfield Heath near East Malling. The 1861 census records that Henry was a widowed agricultural labourer. He was living with two of his daughters, Ann and Phillis, at Larkfield. Also living with Henry was his daughter-in-law Fanny who was born at Weedon, Northampton in 1834. She is described as "soldier's wife". Henry died at Aylesford in 1867 aged 75 years (Malling 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 291). He was buried at East Malling on 10th March 1867. 1.3.5.2.2.7.1 ~~ Eliza Alchin Eliza was baptised at St James' church, East Malling 15th August 1813. Eliza died aged 3 years and she was buried at East Malling on 14th August 1816. 1.3.5.2.2.7.2 ~~ Henry Alchin Henry was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 7th October 1821. The 1841 census records that Henry was unmarried and he was living with his parents at East Malling. He was probably employed as an agricultural labourer. After the publication of the banns on 4th, 11th and 18th January 1846, Henry married Harriett Foreman at East Malling on 1st March 1846 (Malling 1846 March qtr Volume 5 Page 384). The witnesses were John Grist and Jane Cook. Harriett was a servant and she was the daughter of a papermaker from East Malling, Charles Foreman and his wife Harriett. Harriett was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 1st May 1825. It seems unlikely that Harriett was a descendant of Elizabeth Webb and Robert Foreman (see para 1.3.10.4.6). Harriett may have died, probably during childbirth between 1847 and 1850. However there is no surviving record of her death and perhaps she simply deserted her husband. The census of 1851 records that Henry was a widowed brickies labourer. At the time he was living with his widowed father at Larkfield Heath, East Malling. Henry died at Larkfield Heath aged 34 years (Malling 1855 June qtr Volume 2a Page 245). He was buried at East Malling on 29th May 1855. 1.3.5.2.2.7.3 ~~ William John Alchin William was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 18th May 1823. William died at The Rocks aged 3 years. He was buried at East Malling on 22nd January 1827. 1.3.5.2.2.7.4 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 10th July 1825. At the time she was living with her widowed father at Larkfield Heath, East Malling. Later that year Mary was a witness at the wedding of her sister Margaret to Robert Kemsley at East Malling in August 1851. Mary may have married either Henry Burley or George Capon in late 1852 (Medway 1852 December qtr Volume 2a Page 487). 1.3.5.2.2.7.5 ~~ Sarah Alchin Sarah was born at The Rocks and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 16th December 1827. The 1841 census records that Sarah was living with her kinswoman Peggy Alchin at East Malling. The 1851 census records that Sarah was a house servant to Richard Mays at the Parsonage House, Wrotham. Mays was the Curate of Wrotham at the time. Sarah married John Tomlyn in 1853 (Malling 1853 June qtr Volume 2a Page 523); he was born at Wrotham in 1832. John and Sarah had at least one child Alfred (1860). The 1861 census records that John was a coachman and he and his wife and their infant son were living at Plaxtol Street, Wrotham. Also staying with them was Sarah's 9 year old cousin Elizabeth A Alchin (born at Gravesend in 1852 and possibly the daughter of John Alchin & Charlotte Johnson). The 1871 census records that John was a coachman (domestic) and he and his wife and their son were living at 88 Dukes Yard, St George Hanover Square. The 1881 census records that John was employed as a coachman and he and Sarah were living at Pebble Hill, Limpsfield in Surrey. The 1841 census records that she was living with her parents at East Malling. Jane married William Ashby or Ashbee (Maidstone 1851 March qtr Volume 5 Page 354). The census of that year records that Jane was married and she was living at her father's house at Larkfield Heath there is no sign of her husband but there is also no indication that she was widowed. Jane would have been heavily pregnant at the time with her first child and she may have gone home so that her mother could assist with the birth. William and Jane had at least seven children Sarah (1851), Harriett (1853), Jane (1855), William (1858), Henry (1861), Ann (1863) and Betsy (1866). The East Malling parish registers record that William was a labourer of Larkfield. William moved his family to Maidstone and then to Aylesford where the parish register records that he was a potter. The 1861 census records that William was a potter and he and his wife and their five eldest children were living at Lower Pratling Street, Aylesford. William died in 1868 aged only 38 years. He was buried at Aylesford on 26th April 1868. Two years after her husband's death, Jane had a further child (who may actually have been her grandaughter) Ada (1870). The 1871 census records that Jane was a widowed charwoman (cleaning lady) and she and her six children were living at 88 Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1881 census records that Jane and her two youngest children were staying with her daughter Jane Green and her family at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that Jane was living with her unmarried son and her two grandaughters in 4 rooms at 18 Albert Street, Maidstone. The other 3 rooms of the house were occupied by Jane's married daughter Bessie Jones and her family. The 1901 census records that Jane was living with her daughter and son in law (Betsy and Henry Jones) and their family at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone. Jane died at her daughter's home at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone aged 73 years and she was buried at Aylesford on 15th July 1903. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.1 ~~ Sarah Ashbee Sarah was born at Larkfield soon after the 1851 census and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 20th July 1851. Stephen and Sarah were the witnesses at the weddings of her younger sisters Harriett and Jane at Aylesford in 1874 and 1875 respectively. Sarah and Stephen had at least three children Minnie (1874), Emma (1876) and Stephen (1878). The parish register records that Stephen was a labourer of Aylesford. Sarah died at Aylesford in 1880 aged 28 years and she was buried at Aylesford on 19th February 1880. The 1881 census records that Stephen was a widowed brickmaker's labourer. He and his his two young children were living at Sand Pit Road, Easthampstead in Berkshire. Fanny Giles, Stephen's 21 year old niece from Boxley, was the family's housekeeper. Stephen is not recorded in the 1891 or 1901 English census. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.1.1 ~~ Minnie Sarah Elizabeth Standen Minnie was born at Aylesford and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 26th April 1874 (Malling 1874 March qtr Volume 2a Page 527). The 1881 census records that Minnie was a school girl and she was living with her widowed father at Sand Pit Road, Easthampstead. The 1891 census records that Minnie was living with her maternal grandmother at 18 Albert Street, Maidstone. No occupation is recorded for her. Minnie married her cousin John Frederick Dadson, the son of John Dadson and Phillis Alchin, in 1896 (Camberwell 1896 September qtr Volume 1d page 1728); he was born at Peckham in 1872. Minnie's first husband appears to have died at a very young age as she subsequently married John Simmons in early 1900 (Camberwell 1900 March qtr Volume 1d Page 978); he was born at East Malling in 1873. The 1901 census records that John Simmons was a gas works labourer and he and his wife were living in two rooms at 17 Arthur Street, Camberwell.
