By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 1901 (continued) 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2 ~~ Harriett Ashbee Harriett was born at Larkfield and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 8th November 1853. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Lower Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that Harriett was an unemployed servant. She was unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother at 88 Pratling Street, Aylesford. In 1873 Harriett had a son , whom she christened Robert Henry Stephens, to Henry Stephens a labourer of Aylesford. Harriett subsequently married John Henry Burgess at Aylesford on 25th December 1875 (Malling 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 859). The witnesses to their wedding were Stephen and Sarah Standen. John was a labourer born at Boxley in 1855 and he was the son of Edward Burgess who was also a labourer. Harriett's illegitimate son took the name of his stepfather. John and Harriett had at least seven further children Harriett (1876), Mary (1881), Bessie (1883), Edward (1889), Stephen (1891), Ellen (1896) and Alice (1898). The 1881 census records that John was employed as a general labourer and he and his young family were living at Newfound Out, Winkfield in Berkshire. John had moved his family back to Kent by 1883 but he continued to move from town to town. The 1891 census records that Henry was employed as a gas stoker. He and his wife and their five children were living at 22 Varnes Street, Eccles. The 1901 census records that John was employed as a fitter at the cement works and he and his large family were living at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.1 ~~ Henry T. Burgess (Robert Henry Stephens) Henry, also known as Robert, was baptised as Robert Henry Stephens at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 14th December 1873. He was reputedly the son of Henry Stephens, a labourer of Aylesford. The 1881 census records his name as Henry and he was a school boy and he was living with his family at Newfound Out, Winkfield. The 1891 census records him under the name of Robert Burgess. He was an unmarried cement worker and he was living with his family at 22 Varmes Street, Eccles. Henry (Robert) marrid Isabel C; she was born at Frindsbury in 1872. Henry and Isabel had at least one child Kathleen (1899). The 1901 census records him under the name of Henry Burgess. He was employed as a gas fitter and he and his family were living at 22 Rose Street, Rochester. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.1.1 ~~ Kathleen Isabel Burgess Kathleen was born at Rochester in 1899 (Medway 1899 March qtr Volume 2a Page 648). The 1901 census records that Kathleen was living with her parents at 22 Rose Street, Rochester. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.2 ~~ Harriett Burgess Harriett was born at Ashford, Kent in 1876. The 1881 census records that Harriett was a school girl and she was living with her family at Newfound Out, Winkfield. The 1891 census records that Harriett was living with her parents at 22 Varnes Street, Eccles. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.3 ~~ Mary E. Burgess Mary was born at Winkfield, Berkshire in mid 1881. At the time of the 1881 census Mary was only 3 weeks old and she was living with her parents at Newfound Out, Winkfield. The 1891 census records that Mary was a school girl and she was living with her parents at 22 Varnes Street, Eccles. The 1901 census records that Mary was an unmarried dressmaker (working for herself) and she was living with her parents at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.4 ~~ Bessie Burgess Bessie was born at Maidstone in 1883. The 1891 census records that Bessie was a school girl and she was living with her family at 22 Varnes Street, Eccles. The 1901 census records that Bessie was an unmarried general servant and she was living with her parents at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.5 ~~ Edward John Burgess Edward was born at Aylesford in 1889 (Malling 1889 June qtr Volume 2a Page 620). The 1891 census records that Edward was living with his parents at 22 Varnes Street, Eccles. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his parents at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.6 ~~ Stephen Burgess Stephen was born at Aylesford in 1891 (Malling 1891 June qtr Volume 2a Page 646). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his parents at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.7 ~~ Ellen Maud Burgess Ellen was born at Wouldham in 1896 (Malling 1896 March qtr Volume 2a Page 634). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.2.8 ~~ Alice Rose B. Burgess Alice was born at Wouldham in 1898 (Malling 1898 June qtr Volume 2a Page 661). The 1901 census records that Alice was living with her parents at 5 Medway Cottages, Wouldham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3 ~~ Jane Ashbee Jane was born at Maidstone in about 1855. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Lower Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that she was employed as a domestic servant and she was living with her widowed mother at 88 Pratling Street, Aylesford. Jane married Henry Green at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 28th March 1874 (Malling 1874 March qtr Volume 2a Page 601). The witnesses to the ceremony were Stephen and Sarah Standen. Henry was a labourer and he was born at Aylesford in about 1853, the son of William Green a mechanic. The 1871 census records that Henry was a labourer and he was lodging with Michael and Lucy Hughes who lived at 81 Pratling Street, Aylesford and so were neighbours of the Ashbee family. Henry and Jane had at least nine children Harry (1875), William (1877), Elizabeth (1879), Frederick (1882), Sidney (1884), John (1886), Minnie (1889), Lydia (1893) and Ada (1895). The 1881 census records that Henry was a labourer and he and his family were living at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. Visiting the family on that night was Jane's mother and her sister and brother. The 1891 census records that Henry was employed as a brickfields labourer. He and his wife and their seven eldest children were living at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that Henry was employed as a brick burner and he and his wife and seven of their children were still living at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.1 ~~ Henry William Green Henry, known as Harry, was born at Aylesford in 1875 (Malling 1875 September qtr Volume 2a Page 508) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 25th July 1875. The 1881 census records that Harry was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that Henry was a brickfields labourer and he was living with his parents at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that Henry was an unmarried labourer at the brickfields. He was still living with his parents at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.2 ~~ William Frederick Green William was born at Aylesford on 13th July 1877 (Malling 1877 September qtr Volume 2a Page 522). He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 2nd September 1877. The 1881 census records that William was living with his parents at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that William was employed as an office boy and he was living with his parents at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. William married Emma Spice in 1898 (Maidstone 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1535). William and Emma had at least one child Ilda (1900). The parish register records that William was a labourer of 42 Forstal Street, Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.2.1 ~~ Ilda Emily Green Ilda was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 15th July 1900 (Hollingbourn 1900 June qtr Volume 2a Page 821). Ilda died at Forstal aged 19 months and she was buried at Aylesford on 4th January 1902. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.3 ~~ Elizabeth Jane Green Elizabeth, inevitably known as Lizzie, was born at Aylesford on 12th October 1879. She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 9th November 1879. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that Lizzie was visiting her grandmother and her uncle and aunt (Henry and Betsy Jones) at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.4 ~~ Frederick Green Frederick was born at Maidstone on 5th February 1882. He and his brother Sidney were baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 8th February 1885. The 1891 census records that Frederick was a school boy and he was living with his family at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that Frederick was employed as a labourer in the brickfields and he was still living with his parents at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.5 ~~ Sidney James Green Sidney was born at Eccles on 12th May 1884 (Malling 1884 June qtr Volume 2a Page 604). He and his elder brother Frederick were baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 8th February 1885. The 1891 census records that Sidney was a school boy and he was living with his family at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that Sidney was employed as a labourer in the brickfields and he was still living with his parents at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.6 ~~ John Bertie Green John was born at Forstal near Boxley on 18th December 1886 (Hollingbourne 1887 March qtr Volume 2a Page 745) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 6th January 1887. The 1891 census records that John was a school boy and he was living with his family at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that John was employed as a labourer in the brickfields and he was still living with his parents at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.7 ~~ Minnie Harriett Green Minnie was born at Forstal on 30th August 1889 (Hollingbourne 1889 December qtr Volume 2a Page 751). She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 15th September 1889. The 1891 census records that Minnie was living with her parents at 22 Forstal Cottages, Boxley. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.8 ~~ Lydia Green Lydia was born at Forstal on 2nd March 1893 (Hollingbourne 1893 June qtr Volume 2a Page 745). She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 2nd April 1893. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.3.9 ~~ Ada Clarice Green Ada was born at Forstal on 17th March 1895 (Hollingbourne 1895 June qtr Volume 2a Page 779). She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 21st April 1895. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Forstal Cottages, Boxley. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.4 ~~ William Frederick Ashbee William was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 17th October 1858. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Lower Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that William was already working as a labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at 88 Pratling Street, Aylesford. William married Elizabeth Jane Mitchell in 1877 (Maidstone 1877 December qtr volume 2a Page 1026); she was born at Aylesford in 1859. William and Elizabeth had at least seven children William (1878), Sidney (1881), Frederick (1883), Ella (1887), Gertude (1893), Millie (1894) and John (1898). The parish register records for the baptism of his eldest children that William Ashbee was a labourer of Aylesford. William moved his family to Berkshire in about 1880, then to London and then returned to Kent in the mid 1880's. The 1881 census records that William was employed as a "hanger". He and his wife and their two young boys were living at 2 Charlotte Cottages, Priestwood Common, Easthampstead in Berkshire. Lodging with the family was 35 year old James Jones of King Swinford, Staffordshire. The 1891 census records that William was a gas stoker and he and his wife and their four children were living at 15 May Street, Snodland. A 15 year old butcher, William Wakeman of Burham was boarding with the family. The 1901 census records that William (named as Frederick William) was a gas stoker and a newsagent and he and his wife and their six children were living at May Street, Snodland. Elizabeth's younger brother John H. Mitchell was also living with them. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.4.1 ~~ William Henry Ashbee William was born at Aylesford on 31st October 1878 (Malling 1878 December qtr Volume 2a Page 555). He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 12th January 1879. The 1881 census records that William was living with his family at 2 Charlotte Cottages, Priestwood Common, Easthampstead. The 1891 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 15 May Street, Snodland. The 1901 census records that Henry was an unmarried assistant engineer at the Grand Hotel, Grand Parade, Eastbourne in Sussex. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.4.2 ~~ Sidney F. Ashbee Sidney was born at Bracknell in Berkshire in early 1881. The census of that year records that Sidney was 2 months old and he was living with his parents at Easthampstead. The 1891 census records that Sidney was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 15 May Street, Snodland. The 1901 census records that Sidney was an engine driver and he was living with his parents at May Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.4.3 ~~ Frederick Ashbee Frederick was born at London in 1883. The 1891 census records that Frederick was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 15 May Street, Snodland. The 1901 census records that Frederick was a papermaker and he was living with his parents at May Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.4.4 ~~ Ella Ashbee Ella was born at Snodland in 1887. The 1891 census records that Ella was living with her parents at 15 May Street, Snodland. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at May Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.4.5 ~~ Gertrude Emma Ashbee Gertrude was born at Snodland in 1893 (Malling 1893 March qtr Volume 2a Page 653). The 1901 census records that the young boy wa sliving with his family at May Street, Snodland. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.5 ~~ Henry John Ashbee Henry was born at Aylesford in about February 1861 (Malling 1861 March qtr Volume 2a Page 3**) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul on 5th May 1861. The 1861 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with his family at Lower Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at 88 Pratling Street, Aylesford. The 1881 census records that Henry was an unmarried labourer. He and his mother were staying with his sister Jane Green at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that Henry was ermployed as a general labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his widowed mother at 18 Albert Street, Maidstone. Henry married Isabel ; she was born at Maidstone in 1865. Henry and Isabel had at least one child Maud (1896). The 1901 census records that Henry was an engine driver in a stone quarry. He and his wife and their daughter were living at 9 Havelock Lane, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.5.1 ~~ Maud Ashbee Maud was born at Maidstone in 1896. The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at 9 Havelock Lane, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.6 ~~ Ann Elizabeth Ashbee Ann was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 31st May 1863. Ann died at the age of 15 months and she was buried at Aylesford on 6th September 1864. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.7 ~~ Betsy Ashbee Betsy was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 12th August 1866. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 88 Pratling Street, Aylesford. She was not recorded with her family in the 1881 census and Betsy had probably gone into service by this time. Betsy married Henry Jones in the mid 1880's he was born at Maidstone in 1865. Henry and Betsy had at least five children Leonard (1886), Lily (1890), Alice (1892), Reginald (1895) and Hilda (1900). The 1891 census records that Henry was a cabinet maker. He and his young family lived in three rooms at 18 Albert Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that Henry was a cabinet maker and he and his wife, his mother in law and his five children were living at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone. Betsy's niece Lizzie Green was also visiting them. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.7.1 ~~ Leonard William Jones Leonard was born at Maidstone in late 1886 (Maidstone 1886 December qtr Volume 2a Page 708a). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at 18 Albert Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that Leonard was a cabinet maker and he was living with his parents at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.7.2 ~~ Lily Florence Jones Lily was born at Maidstone in 1890 (Maidstone 1890 December qtr Volume 2a Page 673). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.7.5 ~~ Hilda Emma Jones Hilda was born at Maidstone in October 1900 (Maidstone 1900 December qtr Volume 2a Page 759). The 1901 census records that the 7 month old infant was living with her family at 16 Fisher Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.8 ~~ Ada Selina Ashbee Ada was born at Eccles Row in 1870 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 13th March 1870. The 1881 census records that Ada was a school girl and she and her mother (grandmother?) were staying with her sister (mother?) Jane Green at 95 Perryfield Street, Maidstone. Ada married William Frederick Cheeseman in 1886 (Maidstone 1886 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1163); he was born at Cranbrook in 1865. William and Ada had at least two children William (1887) and Bertie (1889). The 1891 census records that William was a labourer and he and his wife and their two children were living at 15 Perry Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that William was a labourer and he and his wife and their two sons were living at 119 Boxley Road, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.8.1 ~~ William T. Cheeseman William was born at Maidstone in 1887. The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 15 Perry Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that William was an errand boy and he was living with his parents at 119 Boxley Road, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.6.8.2 ~~ Bertie T. Cheeseman Bertiw was born at Maidstone in 1889. The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 15 Perry Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 119 Boxley Road, Maidstone. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7 ~~ Margaret Alchin Margaret was born at The Rocks and she was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 6th November 1831. The 1841 census records that Margaret was living with her family at East Malling. The 1851 census records that she was living with her widowed father at Larkfield Heath, East Malling. No occupation is recorded for her but she was probably keeping house for her father just prior to her marriage. After the publication of the banns on 3rd, 10th and 17th August 1851, Margaret married a labourer, Robert Samuel Kemsley, at East Malling on 23rd August 1851 (Malling 1851 September qtr Volume 5 Page 259). The witnesses to their wedding were Margaret's siblings, Henry and Mary Alchin. Robert was born at Aylesford in 1828 and he was the son of Robert Kemsley senior, who was also a labourer, and his wife Mary. The Kemsleys had been living at Aylesford since at least the middle of the 17th century. Robert and Margaret had at least four children Eliza (1852), George (1854), Robert (1856) and Alfred (1863). The 1861 census records that Robert was employed as a brickfields labourer and he must have been living in very cramped conditions in his home at 1 Albion Row, Aylesford. Living in the house were he and his wife, their three eldest children, his parents, three unmarried brothers and two lodgers. The 1871 census records that Robert was still employed as a brickfields labourer and he and his wife and their three youngest children were living at 8 Albion Street, Aylesford. Roberts elderly parents, one brother and one lodger were also living in the house. Some time over the next few years Robert moved his family to northern England. The 1881 census records that Robert was employed as a quarry labourer and he and his wife, son and grandson (Herbert Newcome born in Wingate, Durham in 1875) were living at 35 Carley Road, Southwick, Co. Durham. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1 ~~ Eliza Kemsley Eliza was born at Aylesford in 1852 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 1st August 1852. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 1 Albion Row, Aylesford. Eliza married William Newcomb; he was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire in 1847. William and Eliza had at least eleven children George (1874), Herbert (1876), Robert (1877), Eliza (1879), Edgar (1881), Percy (1882), Viola (1885), Eva (1888), Oswald (1890), Clara (1893) and Fred (1895). There is no surviving record of the family (other than their son Herbert who was staying with his grandparents) in the 1881 census. It is likely that the family was living in Scotland at the time. The 1891 census records that William was a millwright and he and his wife and eight of their children were living at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. Also living with them were two of their nieces 23 year old Clara K. Newcomb of London and 10 year old Amy E. Kemsley of Scotland. The 1901 census records that William was a millwright and he and his wife wife and nine of their children were living at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. Also living with them was Eliza's 18 year old nephew Robert Kemsley of Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.1 ~~ George Alfred W. Newcomb George was born at Middlesbrough in 1874 (Stockton 1874 March qtr Volume 10a Page 70). The 1891 census records that George was a ship's plater and he was living with his parents at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. George amrried Maria Peacock in 1897 (Hartlepool 1897 December qtr Volume 10a Page 183); she was born in West Hartlepool in 1878. George and Maria had at least one child Robert (1900). The 1901 census records that Robert was a ship's plater and he and his wife and their infant son were living at 145 Burbank Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.1.1 ~~ Robert W. Newcomb Robert was born at West Hartlepool in 1900 (Hartlepool 1900 September qtr Volume 10a Page 183). The 1901 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with his family at 145 Burbank Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.2 ~~ Herbert Thomas Newcomb Herbert was born at Wingate, Co. Durham in 1876 (Easington 1876 March qtr Volume 10a Page 4*). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his grandparents (due to ill health perhaps) at 25 Carley Road, Southwick, Co. Durham. Herbert died in 1883 aged only 7 years (Hartlepool 1883 March qtr Volume 10a Page 71). 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.3 ~~ Robert Newcomb Robert was born at Newport in 1877. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1901 census records that Robert was an unmarried millwright and he was living with his parents at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.4 ~~ Eliza Newcomb Eliza was born in Scotland in 1879. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1901 census records that Eliza was unmarried and she was living with her parents at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. She would have been required to help her mother to raise her enormous number of siblings. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.5 ~~ Edgar Newcomb Edgar was born in Scotland in 1881. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1901 census records that Percy was a house painter and he was living with his parents at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.7 ~~ Viola Mabel Newcomb Viola was born at East Hartlepool in 1885 (Hartlepool 1885 December qtr Volume 10a Page 153). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1901 census records that Viola was a dressmaker and she was living with her parents at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.8 ~~ Eva Newcomb Eva was born in West Hartlepool in 1898 (Harlepool 1898 December qtr Volume 10a Page 467). The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.9 ~~ Oswald Aidan Newcomb Oswald was born at West Hartlepool in 1890 (Hartlepool 1890 December qtr Volume 10 Page 118). The 1891 census records that the 7 month old infant was living with his family at Northumberland Street, Stranton, Co. Durham. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.10 ~~ Clara Newcomb Clara was born at West Hartlepool in 1893 (Hartlepool 1893 March qtr Volume 10a Page 176). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.1.11 ~~ Fred Newcomb Fred was born at West Hartlepool in 1895 (Hartlepool 1895 September qtr Volume 10a Page 164). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Houghton Street, West Hartlepool. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.2 ~~ George Kemsley George was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 3rd December 1854. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 1 Albion Row, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that George was labouring with his father in the brickfields and he was living with his parents and grandparents at 8 Albion Row, Aylesford. George married Jane; she was born in Scotland in 1861. George and Jane had at least four children Hellen (1890), George (1892), Alfred (1893) and Maggie (1900). The 1901 census records that George was employed as a rigger at the iron works. He and his family were living at Alexander Place, Dalton in Fur, Lancashire. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.2.1 ~~ Hellen Kemsley Hellen was born at Middlesboro in 1890. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Alexander Place, Dalton in Fur. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.2.2 ~~ George Kemsley George was born at Middlesboro in 1892. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Alexander Place, Dalton in Fur. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.2.3 ~~ Alfred Kemsley Alfred was born at Middlesboro in mid 1893 (Middlesbro' 1893 June qtr Volume 9d Page 610). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Alexander Place, Dalton in Fur. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.2.4 ~~ Maggie Kemsley Maggie was born at Askan in Fur, Lancashire in 1900. The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at Alexander Place, Dalton in Fur. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.3 ~~ Robert Henry Kemsley Robert was born at Aylesford and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 30th November 1856. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 1 Albion Row, Aylesford. The 1871 census records that Robert was an unemployed labourer and he was living with his parents at 8 Albion Row, Aylesford. The 1881 census records that Robert was living with his parents at 35 Carley Road, Southwick. No occupation is listed for him. 1.3.5.2.2.7.7.4 ~~ Alfred Kemsley Alfred was born at East Malling in 1863. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Albion Row, Aylesford. 1.3.5.2.2.7.8 ~~ John Alchin John was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 30th March 1834. The 1841 census records that John was living with his parents at East Malling. The 1851 census records that he was employed as a bricklayer's labourer and he was living with his widowed father at Larkfield Heath, East Malling. John was probably the husband of Fanny who was staying with her father-in-law at the time of the 1861 census. If that is correct then John had joined the army and he was probably serving overseas in India or in one of the other colonies. Fanny may have died in 1864 (Malling 1864 March qtr Volume 2a Page 319). 1.3.5.2.2.7.9 ~~ Robert Alchin Robert was born at the hamlet of Mill Street near East Malling and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 17th July 1836. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his parents at East Malling. The 1851 census records that Robert was employed as a bricklayer's labourer and he was living with his widowed father at Larkfield Heath, East Malling. Robert married Martha Vaun Trevor in Suffolk in 1872 (Ipswich 1872 March qtr Volume 4a Page 817); she was born at Fishguard, Pembrokeshire in about 1843. Robert and Martha had at least three children Mary (1872), William (1875) and Robert (1878). The 1881 census records that Robert and his family were living at Little Chattenden, Hoo on the Medway on the Kent coast. He was employed by the Government as a watchman and caretaker. Martha died in 1883 aged about 38 years (Hoo 1883 March qtr Volume 2a Page 307). Robert died in 1884 aged '55' years (Hoo 1884 September qtr Volume 2a Page 320). He was actually aged 48 years. 1.3.5.2.2.7.9.1 ~~ Mary M. Alchin Mary was born at Portsmouth in Hampshire in about 1872. The 1881 census records that she was a school girl living with her family at Little Chattenden, Hoo in Kent. 1.3.5.2.2.7.9.2 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was born at Brompton, Kent in mid 1875 (Medway 1875 September qtr Volume 2a Page 492). The 1881 census records that William was a school boy living with his family at Little Chattenden, Hoo in Kent. 1.3.5.2.2.7.9.3 ~~ Robert John Alchin Robert was born at Hoo, Kent in 1878 (N. Aylesford 1878 September qtr Volume 2a Page 484). The 1881 census records that Robert was living with his family at Lttle Chattenden, Hoo. The 1901 census records that Robert was an unmarried dockyard worker in Pembrokeshire. He was living with his uncle and aunt, James and Elizabeth Harriss, at Neyland near his mother's birthplace. |
