By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued) 1.3.5.3.2.5.7 ~~ Maria Louisa Alchin Maria was born at West Malling in December 1838 (Malling 1839 March qtr Volume 5 Page 323) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 22nd March 1839. The 1841 census records that Maria was living with her parents at Middle Row High Street, West Malling. She is also recorded at the same time at Sole Street, West Malling staying with Thomas and Harriett Claxton. Maria migrated to America with her parents in the late 1840's. The 1850 US census records that the young girl was living with her family at Pittsfield, Washtenaw County, Michigan. Louisa married Edward M. Bigelow at Kalamazoo county, Michigan on 24th April 1861. Edward was born in Ohio in June 1833. Edward and Maria (usually known in America as Louisa) had at least five children – Cora (1862), Olive (1865), Elizabeth (1868), Mabel (1870) and Edith. The 1870 census records that Edward was a farmer ( and fairly wealthy with real estate valued at $7,000 and personal assets worth $800) and he and his wife and their three young daughters were living at Alamo, Kalamazoo County. The 1880 census records that Edward was a farmer. He and his wife and their four daughters were still living at Alamo. The 1900 census records that Edwrad was reired and he and his wife and their youngest daughter were living at Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County. Four of their five daughters were still alive at the time. 1.3.5.3.2.5.7.1 ~~ Cora Bigelow Cora was born in Michigan in 1862. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Alamo, Kalamazaoo County. The 1880 census records that she was "teaching school" and she was living with her parents at Alamo. 1.3.5.3.2.5.7.2 ~~ Olive Bigelow Olive was born in Michigan in 1865. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Alamo, Kalamazaoo County. The 1880 census records that she was living with her parents at Alamo. 1.3.5.3.2.5.7.3 ~~ Elizabeth Bigelow Elizabeth was born in Michigan in 1868. The 1870 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Alamo, Kalamazaoo County. The 1880 census records that she was living with her parents at Alamo. 1.3.5.3.2.5.7.4 ~~ Mabel Bigelow Mabel was born in Michigan in late 1870. The 1880 census records that she was living with her parents at Alamo, Kalamazaoo County. 1.3.5.3.2.5.7.5 ~~ Edith Bigelow Edith was born in Michigan in June 1880. The 1900 census records that Edith was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County. 1.3.5.3.2.5.8 ~~ George (Anthony) Alchin This baby was registered as George in mid 1841 (Malling 1841 June qtr Volume 5 Page 325) but in the 1841 census he is listed as Anthony. He and his twin sister Sarah were born at West Malling, probably in March 1841. The 1841 census records that he was only 2 weeks old. There is no further record of Anthony but his name may have been changed. There is a record of an infant boy George Alchin who died aged 20 months (Malling 1843 March qtr Volume 5 Page 268) and who was buried at West Malling on 3rd February 1843 – there is no record of any baptism for George or Anthony Alchin around this time. 1.3.5.3.2.5.9 ~~ Sarah Ann Alchin Sarah and her twin brother Anthony / George were born at West Malling in March 1841 (Malling 1841 June qtr Volume 5 Page 325). At the time of the census that year she was 2 weeks old. Sarah was buried as an infant at West Malling on 13th February 1842 (Malling 1842 March qtr Volume 5 Page 257). 1.3.5.3.2.5.10 ~~ Lucy D. Alchin Lucy was born at West Malling on 26th December 1843 (Malling 1844 March qtr Volume 5 Page 362) and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 29th March 1844. She emigrated to America with her family when she was only a young girl. The 1850 US census records that the young girl was living with her family at Pittsfield, Washtenaw County, Michigan. The 1860 census records that Lucy was living with (as a servant girl perhaps) George and Cynthia Gardiner at Pittsfield in Washtenaw County. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11 ~~ Edwin Augustus Alchin Edwin was born at West Malling on 2nd March 1846 (Malling 1846 March qtr Volume 5 Page 371) and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 14th June 1846. Edwin migrated to the USA with his parents in the late 1840s. The 1850 US census records that the young boy was living with his family at Pittsfield, Washtenaw County, Michigan. The 1860 census records that Edwin was a school boy and he was living with his family at York in Washtenaw County. Edwin married Sarah Jane Smith at Jackson, Michigan on 23rd September 1870. Sarah was born at New Jersey in February 1845. Edwin and Sarah had at least five children – Harry (1871), Hattie (1873), Ralph (1876), Wilbur (1877) and Lula (1879). The 1880 census records that Edwin was a farmer and he and his wife and their two youngest children were living at Milan, Monroe County, Michigan. The 1900 census records that Edwin was a farmer and he and his wife and their youngest daughter were living at York, Washtenaw County. The 1920 census records that Edwin and Sarah were retired and living alone at York. Sarah died in the 1920's. The 1930 census records that Edwin was a widower and he was boarding with Bernard and Ruby Crawford at Milan, Washtenaw County. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.1 ~~ Harry Bertie Alchin Harry, known as Bertie, was born at Monroe, Michigan on 21st January 1871. Bertie died at York, Eashtenaw County of scrofula on 26th January 1874 (181/271) aged 3 years and 5 days. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.2 ~~ Hattie Alchin Hattie was born at Monroe, Michigan on 25th November 1873. Hattie was found dead in her bed at home at York, Washtenaw County on 5th February 1874 (181/272) aged 2 ½ months. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.3 ~~ Ralph Alchin Ralph was born at Monroe, Michigan on 18th April 1876. Ralph died before 1880. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.4 ~~ Wilbur Lee Alchin Wlibur was born at Monroe, Michigan on 18th July 1877. The 1880 census records that Wilbur (named as Lee W. Alchin) was living with his parents at Milan, Michigan. Wilbur married Maud in 1903; she was born in Canada in 1874 and she emigrated to the United States as a child in 1878. The 1910 census records that Wilbur was a baker and he and his wife were living alone at Lansing, Ingham County. Wilbur and Maud eventually had a child – Glen (1910). The 1920 census records that Wilbur was an electrical contractor and he and his wife and their son were living at Redford, Wayne County in Michigan. The 1930 census records that Wilbur was a landscape gardner and he and his wife were living in their own home (valued at $12,000) at Detroit, Wayne County. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.5 ~~ Glen V. Alchin Glen was born in Michigan in 1910. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Redford, Wayne County. Glen married Almada Robinson; she was born in Iowa in 1911 the daughter of Henry and Ella Robinson. Glen and Almada had at least one child – Glenda (1929). The 1930 census records that Glen had no occupation (this was the early days of the Great Depression) and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living with his parents in law at Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.5.1 ~~ Glenna Alchin Glenna was born in Michigan in early 1929. The 1930 census records that the 18 month old infant was living with her extended family at Plattsmoth, Cass County, Nebraska. 1.3.5.3.2.5.11.5 ~~ Lula Elzada Alchin Lula was born at Monroe, Michigan on 1st April 1879. The 1880 census records that Lula was living with her parents at Milan, Michigan. The 1900 census records that Lula was unmarried and she was living with her parents at York, Washtenaw County. 1.3.5.3.2.5.12 ~~ John Alchin John and his twin sister Eliza were born at West Malling on 14th May 1848 (Malling 1848 June qtr Volume 5 Page ***) and they were baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 23rd June 1848. Neither baby survived for more than a couple of weeks (Malling 1848 September qtr Volume 5 Page 285). 1.3.5.3.2.5.13 ~~ Eliza Alchin Eliza and her twin brother John were born at West Malling on 14th May 1848 (Malling 1848 June qtr Volume 5 Page ***) and they were baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 23rd June 1848. Neither baby survived for more than a couple of weeks (Malling 1848 September qtr Volume 5 Page 285). 1.3.5.3.2.6 ~~ Ann Martha Alchin Ann was born at West Malling on 25th May 1802 and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 16th June 1802. Ann was a witness at the wedding of her elder brother Richard at Aylesford in 1825. Ann married George Taylor; he was born in Lancashire in 1805. The 1861 census records that George was a stationer and he and his wife were living at 23 Cirencester Place, Marylebone. Also living with them was Ann's 19 year old nephew William Alchin of Canterbury. 1.3.5.3.2.7 ~~ Grace Charlotte Alchin Grace was born at West Malling on 23rd March 1804 and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 20th April 1804. The 1841 census records that Grace was living with her sister Lucy George at Swan Street, West Malling. Grace married Richard Cock in London in 1843 (Marylebone 1843 June qtr Volume 1 Page 267); he was born at Truro, Cornwall in 1816 and so was considerably younger than his wife. Richard and Grace had at least two children – Ann (1844) and Julia (1848). The 1851 census records that Richard was a shoe maker and he and his wife were living at 66 Ernest Street, St Pancras. The 1861 census records that Richard was a cordwainer and he and his wife and their youngest daughter were living at 64 Ernest Street, St Pancras. The 1871 census records that Richard was a ladies boot maker and he and his wife were living alone at 2 Foley Street, Maidstone. 1.3.5.3.2.7.1 ~~ Ann Cock Ann was born at Dover in 1844. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 66 Ernest Street, St Pancras. Ann was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1861 census. She had either gone into service or had died. 1.3.5.3.2.7.2 ~~ Julia Ann Cock Julia was born at St Pancras in 1848 (St Pancras 1848 June qtr Volume 1 Page 527). The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 66 Ernest Street, St Pancras. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 64 Ernest Street, St Pancras. Julia married her first cousin William Charles Anthony Alchin in London in 1869 (Marylebone 1869 September qtr Volume 1a Page 803); he was born at Canterbury in 1841 the son of Henry and Harriett Alchin. William and Julia had at least seven children, nearly all of whom died in infancy – Frederick (1870), Arthur (1872), Edwin (1873), Julia (1875), Julia (1878), William (1882) and Albert (1884). For further details of Julia and her family see below (para 1.3.5.3.2.8.5). 1.3.5.3.2.8 ~~ Henry Thomas Alchin Henry was born at West Malling on 1st February 1806 and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 28th March 1806. Henry may have been a witness at the wedding of his sister Caroline to their cousin William Alchin at Maidstone in 1827. He married Harriett; she was born at Canterbury in 1808. Henry and Harriett probably had at least seven children – Henry (1838), Harriett (1839), William (1841), George (1843), Richard (1846), Robert (1848) and Sarah (1850). They probably also had two other children who both died within days of each other in 1839 – Edwin and Richard. Henry was a cordwainer (shoemaker) and later a licensed victualler of Canterbury where all his children were born. It is interesting that his children received typical Malling names such as Anthony, Nicholas, Richard and Robert. The 1841 census records that Henry was a shoemaker and he and his wife and their only surviving child (to that time) were living at Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1851 census records that Henry was a bootmaker and Harriett was a shoe binder. The couple and six of their children were living at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1861 census records that Henry was a cordwainer and Harriett was a shoe binder. They and three of their children (who all worked in the shoe trade) were living at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. Harriett died in 1877 aged 68 years (Canterbury 1877 June qtr Volume 2a Page 432). The 1881 census records that Henry was widowed and a retired licensed victualler – it gives his place of birth incorrectly as Canterbury. He was living with his married daughter Harriett Munns at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. Henry died in 1889 aged 83 years (Canterbury 1889 June qtr Volume 2a Page 431). 1.3.5.3.2.8.1 ~~ Edwin Alchin Edwin was born at an unknown date but he may have been a twin of Richard. Edwin (and Richard) died in 1839 (Canterbury 1839 September qtr Volume 5 Page 43). 1.3.5.3.2.8.2 ~~ Richard Alchin Richard was born at an unknown date. He died in 1839 (Canterbury 1839 September qtr Volume 5 Page 45). 1.3.5.3.2.8.3 ~~ Henry Thomas Alchin Henry was born at Canterbury in 1838 (Canterbury 1838 March qtr Volume 5 Page 63). Henry died in early 1839 aged 1 year (Canterbury 1839 March qtr Volume 5 Page 48). 1.3.5.3.2.8.4 ~~ Harriett Ann Alchin Harriett was born at Canterbury in the summer of 1839 (Canterbury 1839 September qtr Volume 5 Page 59). The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1861 census records that Harriett was a shoe binder. She was unmarried and she was still living with her parents at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. Harriett married the previously widowed John Munns in 1871 (Canterbury 1871 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1301). John was born at Canterbury in 1833 and he had at least three children from a previous marriage (Charlotte, George and Albert). John and Harriett had at least five children – Flora (1872), Henry (1874), Harriett (1876), Emily (1878) and Rose (1880). The 1881 census records that John was a licensed victualler and he and his wife and his eight children were living at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. Harriett's widowed father was also living with them. The 1891 census records that John was still a licensed victualler and he and his large family were still at 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. John Munns died in 1892 aged 58 years (Canterbury 1892 December qtr Volume 2a Page 465). Harriett is not recorded in the 1901 English census. 1.3.5.3.2.8.4.1 ~~ Flora Emma Munns Flora was born at Canterbury in 1872 (Canterbury 1872 December qtr Volume 2a Page 708). The 1881 census records that Flora was a school girl and she was living with her family at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that Flora was an unmarried telegraphist and she was living with her family at the same address. Flora married Stephen Cullen in 1899 (Canterbury 1899 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1807); he was born at Canterbury in 1868. Stephen and Flora had at least one child – Doris (1900). The 1901 census records that Stephen was a post office clerk and he and his young family were living at 20 Havelock Street, Canterbury. Also living with them was Flora's younger sister Rosa. 1.3.5.3.2.8.4.1.1 ~~ Doris Rosa Cullen Doris was born at Canterbury in 1900 (Canterbury 1900 September qtr Volume 2a Page 889). The 1901 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her parents at 20 Havelock Street, Canterbury. 1.3.5.3.2.8.4.2 ~~ Henry Thomas Munns Henry was born at Canterbury in 1874 (Canterbury 1874 September qtr Volume 2a Page 703). The 1881 census records that Henry was a school boy and he was living with his family at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that Henry was a surveyors clerk and he was still living with his parents at the same address. Henry is not recorded in the 1901 English census. 1.3.5.3.2.8.4.3 ~~ Harriett Ann Munns Harriett was born at Canterbury in 1876 (Canterbury 1876 June qtr Volume 2a Page 757). The 1881 census records that Harriett was a school girl and she was living with her family at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that she was still living with her parents at the same address and she appears to have left school. The 1901 census records that Harriett was unmarried and she was working as a music store assistant. She was living with her sister Emily at 24 Havelock Street, Canterbury. 1.3.5.3.2.8.4.4 ~~ Emily Maria Munns Emily was born at Canterbury in 1878 (Canterbury 1878 March qtr Volume 2a Page 747). The 1881 census records that Emily was living with her family at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at the same address. The 1901 census records that Emily was unmarried and she was working as a waitress in a commercial hotel. She was living with her sister Harriett at 24 Havelock Street, Canterbury. 1.3.5.3.2.8.4.5 ~~ Rosa Sarah Munns Rosa was born at Canterbury in 1880. The 1881 census records that the infant girl was living with her family at the "Seven Stars", 1 Orange Street, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that Rosa was a school girl and she was living with her family at the same address. The 1901 census records that Rosa was unmarried and she was working as a shoe shop assistant. She was living with her married sister Flora Cullen at 20 Havelock Street, Canterbury. 1.3.5.3.2.8.5 ~~ William Charles Anthony Alchin William was born at Canterbury in 1841 (Canterbury 1841 December qtr Volume 5 Page 54). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. William moved to London to learn the printing trade. The 1861 census records that William was a compositor and he was living with his uncle and aunt (George and Ann Taylor) at 23 Cirencester Place, Marylebone. William married his first cousin Julia Ann Cock in London in 1869 (Marylebone 1869 September qtr Volume 1a Page 803); she was born at St Pancras in 1848, the daughter of Richard Cock and Grace Charlotte Alchin. William and Julia may have had at least seven children, nearly all of whom died in infancy – Frederick (1870), Arthur (1872), Edwin (1873), Julia (1875), Julia (1878), William (1882) and Albert (1884). William and his family are not recorded in the 1871 English census. The 1881 census records that William was employed as a printer / compositor and he and his wife were living alone at 48 Munster Street, St Pancras. The 1891 census records that William was a compositor and he and his wife and their only two surviving children were living at 136 Cleveland Street, St Pancras in London. Julia may have died in 1940 aged 93 years (Pancras 1940 June qtr Volume 1b Page 113). 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.1 ~~ Frederick William Alchin Frederick was born at St Pancras in 1870 (Pancras 1870 September qtr Volume 1b Page 187). He died in London in late 1875 (Marylebone 1875 December qtr Volume 1a Page 358). Frederick was one of three of William and Julia's children who were to die in the space of only a few months. 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.2 ~~ Arthur Richard H. Alchin Arthur was born at St Pancras in 1872 (Pancras 1872 June qtr Volume 1b Page 161). He died there in late 1875 aged 3 years (Pancras 1875 December qtr Volume 1b Page 110). 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.3 ~~ Edwin Robert Alchin Edwin was born at St Pancras in 1873 (Pancras 1873 September qtr Volume 1b Page 137). He died there almost straight away (Pancras 1873 September qtr Volume 1b Page 101). 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.4 ~~ Julia Agnes Alchin Julia was born at St Pancras in 1875 (Pancras 1875 December qtr Volume 1b Page 195). She died the following year aged only several months (Marylebone 1876 June qtr Volume 1b Page 364). 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.5 ~~ Julia Mary Alchin Julia was born at St Pancras in 1878 (Pancras 1878 September qtr Volume 1b Page 18). Julia died almost straight away (Pancras 1878 September qtr Volume 1b Page 10). 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.6 ~~ William Charles Alchin William was born at St Pancras in 1882 (Pancras 1882 December qtr Volume 1b Page 14). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 136 Cleveland Street, St Pancras. 1.3.5.3.2.8.5.7 ~~ Albert Henry Alchin Albert was born at St Pancras in 1884 (Pancras 1884 December qtr Volume 1b page 43). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 136 Cleveland Street, St Pancras. Albert may have married Ada Plumb in 1914 (West Derby 1914 December qtr Volume 8b Page 1016). 1.3.5.3.2.8.6 ~~ George Frederick Alchin George was born at Canterbury in 1843 (Canterbury 1843 December qtr Volume 5 Page 59). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1861 census records that George was a shoemaker and he was living with his parents at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1881 census records that George was a shoemaker and he was visiting Elizabeth Andrews (she was born at Canterbury in 1825 and she was possibly his aunt) at 15 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7 ~~ Richard Thomas Alchin Richard was born at Canterbury in 1846 (Canterbury 1846 March qtr Volume 5 Page 66). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1861 census records that Richard was a railway telegraph boy and he was recorded at the Snodland Railway Station. Richard married Julia Butler Beddoe at Bermondsey on 12th November 1865 (St Saviour 1865 December qtr Volume 1d Page 27). The ceremony was performed by Rev'd R. Bickersdike and the witnesses were Thomas Henderson and Isabella Alice Beddoe. Both the bride and groom lived at New Church Street, Bermondsey. Julia was born at 69 Chambers Street, Whitechapel on 10th March 1847 the daughter of James Beddoe and Emma Whitaker.. Richard and Julia had at least ten children – Julia (1866), Harriett (1869), James (1870), Annie (1872), Emma (1875), Kate (1877), Henry (1878), Alfred (1880), Winifred (1883), Lilian (1885) and Richard (1886). There were probably others who were still born or who died in infancy. The couple's two eldest children were born at Bermondsey in London whilst the remaining eight were born at Tunbridge Wells. The 1871 census records that Richard was a railway booking clerk and he and his wife and their three young children were living at St Mary's Hill, Tunbridge Wells. Richard moved his family closer to London at the start of 1881. The 1881 census records that Richard was employed by the Railways as a Station Master. He and his wife and their eight children were living at London Road, Halstead. Richard may have died in 1886 aged 40 years (Woolwich 1886 December qtr Volume 1d Page 661). The 1891 census records that Julia and her eight unmarried children were living at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. Also living with them were Julia's married daughter Harriett Brabon and her husband and son. The 1901 census records that Richard's widow and their four unmarried children were living in three rooms at 78 Peckham Park Road, Camberwell. Julia died in 1938 aged 91 years (Deptford 1938 June qtr Volume 1d Page 761). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.1 ~~ Julia Bella Alchin Julia was born at Bermondsey in 1866 (Bermondsey 1866 December qtr Volume 1d Page 89). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at St Mary's Hill, Tunbridge Wells. The 1881 census records that Julia was a school girl and she was living with her parents at London Road, Halstead. Julia married Frederick William Davison in 1886 at about the same time as her father's death (St Saviour 1886 December qtr Volume 1d Page 82). Frederick was born at Lambeth in 1862. Frederick and Julia had at least four children – Ada (1887), Mabel (1889), Frederick (1891) and William (1897). The 1891 census records that Frederick was a tin plate worker and he and his wife and their two children were sharing a house with his brother's family at 7 Reform Terrace, Tottenham. The 1901 census records that Frederick was still a tin plate worker and he and his wife and their four surviving children were living at 5 Lower Victoria Road, Charlton – a suburb of London.
1.3.5.3.2.8.7.1.1 ~~ Ada Davison Ada was born at Greenwich in 1887. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 7 Reform Terrace, Tottenham. The 1901 census records that Ada was living with her parents at 5 Lower Victoria Road, Charlton. Ada married Jack Birchmore. They had at least one child – Ivy (1912). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.1.2 ~~ Mabel Davison Mabel was born at Deptford in 1889. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 7 Reform Terrace, Tottenham. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 5 Lower Victoria Road, Charlton. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.1.3 ~~ Frederick Davison Frderick was born at Tottenham in 1891 (after the census). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 5 Lower Victoria Road, Charlton. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.1.4 ~~ William Davison William was born at Charlton in 1897. The 1901 census records that William was living with his family at 5 Lower Victorian Road, Charlton. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.2 ~~ Harriett Emma Alchin Harriett was born at Bermondsey in 1869 (Bermondsey 1869 March qtr Volume 1d Page 74). The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at St Mary's Hill, Tunbridge wells. The 1881 census records that Harriett was a school girl and she was living with her family at London Road, Halstead. Harriett married Charles Brabon in 1890 (Camberwell 1890 March qtr Volume 1d Page 855); he was born at Burwash, Sussex in 1866. Charles and Harriett had at least three children – Charles (1891), Lilian (1893) and John (1895). The 1891 census records that Charles was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their baby son were living with his mother in law in a very crowded house at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. The 1901 census records that Charles was a labourer in the gas works. He and his wife and their two surviving children were living in two rooms at 55 Catlin Road, Bermondsey. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.2.1 ~~ Charles W. Brabon Charles was born at Bermondsey in early 1891. The 1891 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with his extended family at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. Charles probably did not survive infancy as he is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1901 census. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.2.2 ~~ Lilian Brabon Lilian was born at Bermondsey in 1893 (Camberwell 1893 September qtr Volume 1d Page 977). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 55 Catlin Road, Bermondsey. Lilian later migrated to Australia. She settled in Townsville in northern Queensland where she married a man called Garlick. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.2.3 ~~ John Brabon John was born at Bermondsey in 1895. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 55 Catlin Road, Bermondsey. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.3 ~~ James William Alchin James was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1870 (Tonbridge 1870 December qtr Volume 2a Page 524). The 1871 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with his family at 15 St Mary's Hill, Tunbridge Wells. The 1881 census records that James was a school boy and he was living with his family at London Road, Halstead. The 1891 census records that James was a general labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. The 1901 census records that James was employed as a labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his widowed mother at 78 Peckham Park Road, Camberwell. James died in 1931 aged 60 years (Woolwich 1931 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1574). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.4 ~~ Annie Alchin Annie was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1872 (Tonbridge 1872 December qtr Volume 2a Page 544). The 1881 census records that Annie was a school girl and she was living with her family at London Road, Halstead. The 1891 census records that Annie was unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother (and helping with her siblings) at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. Annie married Thomas Wilmot in 1892 (Camberwell 1892 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1334); he was born at Rotherhithe in 1874. Thomas and Annie had at least two children – Mabel (1893), Charles (1896) and an adopted daughter – Alice (1896). The 1901 census records that Thomas was a gas hot water fitter and he and his young family were living at 27 Lorrimore Road, Newington. Annie's unmarried sister Kate Alchin was also living with them. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.4.1 ~~ Mabel Wilmot Mabel was born at Rotherhithe in 1893. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 27 Lorrimore Street, Newington. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.4.2 ~~ Charles Wilmot Charles was born at Deptford in 1896. The 1901 census records that Charles was living with his family at 27 Lorrimore Street, Newington. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.4.3 ~~ Alice Wilmot Alice was born at Deptford in 1896 and she was the adopted daughter of Thomas Wilmot and Annie Alchin. The 1901 census records that Alice was living with her adopted family at 27 Lorrimore Street, Newington. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.5 ~~ Emma Alice Alchin Emma was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1875 (Tonbridge 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 558). The 1881 census records that Emma was a school girl and she was living with her family at London Road, Halstead. The 1891 census records that Emma was a 'silk hat crown sewer' and she was living with her widowed mother at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.6 ~~ Kate Alchin Kate was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1877 (Tonbridge 1877 March qtr Volume 2a Page 614). The 1881 census records that Kate was living with her family at London Road, Halstead. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. The 1901 census records that Kate was unmarried and she was living with her married sister Annie Wilmot at 27 Lorrimore Street, Newington. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.7 ~~ Henry Thomas Alchin Henry was born at Belgrave Terrace, Tunbridge Wells on 28th November 1878 (Tonbridge 1878 December qtr Volume 2a Page 608). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at London Road, Halstead. The 1891 census records that Henry was a school boy at the Reedham Asylum, Coulsden. This was probably because he had been subject to fits around this time. Henry married Matilda Franklin at St Alban's church, Holborn on 13th June 1901 (Holborn 1901 June qtr Volume 1b Page 1271) she was born at Mile End in London in late 1880. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd C.F. Russell and the witnesses were J. Franklin and W.R. Alchin. Henry and Matilda had at least three children – Harry (1902), Matilda (1903) and Alfred (1908). Henry enlisted in the Territorial Army in 1915. He was discharged due to ill health in 1916. Henry died in 1949 aged 70 years (Camberwell 1949 March qtr Volume 5c Page 360). Matilda died at Aberdour in Scotland in 1965 aged about 84 years. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.7.1 ~~ Henry Arthur Alchin Henry (Harry) was born at Deptford on 27th February 1902 (Greenwich 1902 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1052). Harry died in 1979 aged 77 years (Lambeth 1979 December qtr Volume 14 Page 330). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.7.2 ~~ Matilda Grace Alchin Matilda was born at Peckham on 9th October 1903 (Camberwell 1903 December qtr Volume 1d Page 900). Matilda may have married Edward O'Connell in 1922 (Camberwell 1922 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1502). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.7.3 ~~ Alfred William Alchin Alfred was born in the General Lying Hospital, Lambeth on 2nd December 1908. He married May Ruth Louise Millett at Camberwell Registry Office on 12th April 1930; May was born at 200 High Street, Walthamstow on 6th May 1908. Alfred and May had at least one child – David. May died at Lewisham Hospital on 20th March 1938 aged only 29 years (Lewisham 1938 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1185). Alfred died at Crawley, West Sussex in July 1994 aged 85 years (Crawley 1994 July Volume a39a Folio 46). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.8 ~~ Alfred Alchin Alfred was born at Tunbridge Wells in 1880 (Tonbridge 1880 December qtr Volume 2a Page 601). The 1881 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with his family at London Road, Halstead. Alfred is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1891 census. The 1901 census records that Alfred was employed as a railway shunter. He was unmarried and he was living with his widowed mother at 78 Peckham Park Road, Camberwell. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.9 ~~ Winifred Rose Alchin Winifred was born at Bermondsey in 1883 (St Olave 1883 March qtr Volume 1d Page 263). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. The 1901 census records that Winifred was employed as a stationery packer and she was living with her widowed mother at 78 Peckham Park Road, Camberwell. 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.10 ~~ Lilian Grace Alchin Lilian was born at Bermondsey in 1885. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. Lilian died in 1893 aged only 8 years (Islington 1893 September qtr Volume 1b Page 142). 1.3.5.3.2.8.7.11 ~~ Richard Thomas Alchin Richard was born at Bermondsey in 1886 (St Olave 1886 December qtr Volume 1d Page 315) at about the same time as the death of his father. The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his widowed mother at 19 Catlin Street, Bermondsey. The 1901 census records that he was employed as a steel cutter and he was living with his widowed mother at 78 Peckham Park Road, Camberwell. Richard enlisted in the Army during World War One. He was posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment with the rank of Private (#3/7876). Richard died in 1962 aged 75 years (Battersea 1962 March qtr Volume 5c Page 13). |
