Volume 3 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings. By Steve Green (continued)

Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued)

1.3.5.3.2.8.8  ~~  Robert Nicholas Alchin

Robert was born at Canterbury in 1848 (Canterbury 1848 March qtr Volume 5 Page 70). The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. The 1861 census records that Robert worked as a shoe closer and he lived with his family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury.

Robert married Ellen Ann Chapman in 1871 (Thanet 1871 March qtr Volume 2a Page 873); she was born at Worcester in 1845. The 1871 census records that Robert was a master bootmaker and he and his wife were living alone at 21 Burgate Street, Canterbury. Robert and Ellen eventually had at least six children – William (1866), Ellen (1871), Francis (1873), Robert (1875), Edith (1883) and Sidney (1885).

The 1881 census records that Robert was a boot maker (the same trade as his grandfather Henry Alchin at West Malling). He and his wife and their three surviving children were living at 20 Burgate Road, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that Robert was a bootmaker and he and his wife and three youngest surviving children were still living at the same address.

There is no record of Robert or his family in the 1901 English census. Ellen died in 1924 aged 78 years (Kingston 1924 March qtr Volume 8c Page 715). Robert died in 1926 also aged 78 years (Wandsworth 1926 September qtr Volume 1d Page 503).

1.3.5.3.2.8.8.1  ~~  William Alchin (?)

William was born in London in 1866 and he was either a son from a previous marriage of Ellen's, adopted or he was born illegitimately. He is not recorded with the couple in the 1871 census. The 1881 census records that William was employed as a fish monger and he was living with his parents at 20 Burgate Road, Canterbury. There is no registration of his birth and he is not recorded in the 1901 English census under the name of William Alchin.

1.3.5.3.2.8.8.2  ~~  Ellen Harriett Alchin

Ellen was born at Canterbury in 1871 (Canterbury 1871 December qtr Volume 2a Page 688). The 1881 census records that Ellen was a school girl and she was living with her family at 20 Burgate Road, Canterbury. Ellen may have married (possibly to Walter Looker) in 1901 (Christchurch 1901 March qtr Volume 2b Page 943).

1.3.5.3.2.8.8.3  ~~  Francis Henry Alchin

Francis was born at Canterbury in 1873 (Canterbury 1873 September qtr Volume 2a Page 684). The 1881 census records that Francis was a school boy and he was living with his family at 20 Burgate Road, Canterbury. The 1891 census records that Francis was a pupil teacher and he was living with his parents at the same address.

Francis married Jessie Stewart in 1895 (Canterbury 1895 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1444); she was born in Ireland in 1872. The 1901 census records that Francis was a elementary school master and he and his wife were living alone at 'Sunningside' Sunnyhill Road, Pokesdown in Hampshire.

Jessie died in 1941 aged 68 years (Daviton 1941 March qtr Volume 5a Page 286). Francis died in 1954 aged 80 years (Devizes 1954 March qtr Volume 7c Page 465).

1.3.5.3.2.8.8.4  ~~  Robert Alchin

Robert was born at Canterbury in 1875 (Canterbury 1875 June qtr Volume 2a Page 722). Robert died in 1876 aged just over 1 year (Canterbury 1876 September qtr Volume 2a Page 414).

1.3.5.3.2.8.8.5  ~~  Edith Alice Alchin

Edith was born at Canterbury in 1883 (Canterbury 1883 March qtr Volume 2a Page 848). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 20 Burgate Street, Canterbury. Edith may have married a man named Taylor in 1919 (Dartford 1919 March qtr Volume 2a Page 1208).

1.3.5.3.2.8.8.6  ~~  Sidney Walter Alchin

Sidney was born at Canterbury in 1885 (Canterbury 1885 March qtr Volume 2a Page 865). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 20 Burgate Street, Canterbury. Sidney died at Canterbury in 1894 aged only 9 years (Canterbury 1894 June qtr Volume 2a Page 443).

1.3.5.3.2.8.9  ~~  Sarah Elizabeth Alchin

Sarah was born at Canterbury in 1850 (Canterbury 1850 June qtr Volume 5 Page 77). The 1851 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with her family at 26 Burgate Street, Canterbury. Sarah died in 1852 aged 2 years (Canterbury 1852 December qtr Volume 2a Page 309).

1.3.5.3.2.9  ~~  Maria Ann Alchin

Maria was born at West Malling on 5th December 1807 and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 29th January 1808.

1.3.5.3.2.10  ~~  Lucy Louise Alchin

Lucy was born at West Malling on 17th December 1809 and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 14th January 1810. Lucy married Benjamin George at Chatham on 28th February 1835; he was a widower and he was born at Southwark in London in about 1811. Benjamin had at least one child, probably from his previous marriage – Sarah (1831).

The 1841 census records that Benjamin was a solicitor's clerk. He and his wife and their daughter were living at Swan Street, West Malling. Also living with them was Lucy's sister Grace Alchin. The 1851 census records that Benjamin was employed as a solicitor's managing clerk by Silas Norton of Town Malling. Benjamin lived with his wife and daughter and his widowed mother in law at Swan Street, West Malling.

1.3.5.3.2.10.1  ~~  Sarah E.E. George

Sarah was born at West Malling in about 1830 and she was probably Lucy's step-daughter. The 1841 census records that she was living with her parents and aunt at Swan Street, West Malling. The 1851 census records that Sarah was employed as a governess and she was still living with her parents at Swan Street, West Malling.

1.3.5.3.2.11  ~~  Caroline Alchin

Caroline was born at West Malling on 31st January 1812 and she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 8th March 1812. Caroline married her cousin William Alchin at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 17th November 1827. The witnesses to the ceremony were Henry Thomas Alchin and Susannah Alchin. William was born at Ryarsh in 1904 and he was the son of William Alchin and Elizabeth Stammers.

William and Caroline had at least ten and possibly eleven children – Emma (1828), William (1830), Louisa (1832), George (1834), Clara (1836), Miriam (1840), Sarah (1843), Henry (1845), Alfred (1847), Caroline (1850) and Charles (1853). (Note the birth of George to William and Caroline is not proven but inferred for a number of reasons).

The 1841 census records that William was a carpenter and he and his wife and their five children were living at High Street, West Malling. The 1851 census records that William and his family were still living at High Street, West Malling. William was a carpenter  but now he was employing one man and one apprentice. The 1861 census records that William was a carpenter employing only the one man. William and Caroline and five of their children were still living at High Street, West Malling.

William died in 1880 aged 75 years (Malling 1880 March qtr Volume 2a Page 386). The census of that year records that Caroline Alishin (sic), a 69 year old widow was still living at High Street, West Malling. Living with her were her two unmarried children. Caroline died in 1894 aged 82 years (Malling 1894 December qtr Volume 2a Page 346).

For further information on her descendants see paragraph 1.3.4.4.2.2.2.

1.3.5.3.2.12  ~~  George Alchin

There is no proof that George was the son of Henry and Sarah Alchin. His birth would however fill a gap in the line of children they baptised between 1812 and 1818. There is no record of George's baptism, only his burial at West Malling on 9th February 1815. He is described in the parish register as an infant.

1.3.5.3.2.13  ~~  William Charles Alchin

William was born at West Malling on 6th March 1818 and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 24th May 1818. William died aged 7 years and he was buried at West Malling on 25th July 1825.

1.3.5.3.3  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 16th July 1760.

1.3.5.3.4  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 26th December 1761.

1.3.5.4  ~~  William Alchin

William was born at Ryarsh on 24th May 1734 and he was baptised at St Martin's church, Ryarsh on 4th June 1734. William is included on the settlement certificate dated 6th June 1744 which allowed his family to move from Ryarsh to West Malling. William may have married Elizabeth Butler at St Mary's church, West Malling on 15th October 1773.

William and Elizabeth baptised six children at West Malling – John (1774), Nicholas (1777), William (1778), Sarah (1781), John (1783) and Elizabeth (1786). Elizabeth probably died aged 58 years when she was buried at West Malling on 27th September 1801. There appears however to be no trace of William and Elizabeth's children after 1786.

1.3.5.4.1  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 21st August 1774. He must have died when he was a young boy as his name was re-used in 1783. However he is the right age to be the ancestor's of the Alchin family of Hadlow near Tonbridge (see Part 6 Section 6).

1.3.5.4.2  ~~  Nicholas Alchin

Nicholas was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 10th March 1776.

1.3.5.4.3  ~~  William Alchin

William was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 25th October 1778. William may have married Susannah Gibbs at St Margaret's church, Rochester  on 12th May 1815.

1.3.5.4.4  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 11th February 1781. Sarah may have married William May at St Margaret's church, Rochester on 5th March 1805.

1.3.5.4.5  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 7th May 1783.

1.3.5.4.6  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 14th May 1786.

1.3.5.5  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born at Ryarsh on 20th October 1736 and he was baptised at St Martin's church, Ryarsh on 29th October 1736. Thomas is recorded in the settlement certificate dated 6th June 1744 which allowed his family to move from Ryarsh to West Malling.

1.3.5.6  ~~  Edward Alchin

Edward was born between 1738 and 1740. We only know of him from the settlement certificate dated 6th June 1744 which allowed his father to move his family from Ryarsh to West Malling.

1.3.5.7  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was probably born at Ryarsh but she was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 5th December 1742. She is included in the settlement certificate dated 6th June 1744 which allowed her family to move from Ryarsh to West Malling. Ann probably died at the age of 14 years as the West Malling parish register records the burial of Ann Alchin (no other details) on 30th July 1756.

1.3.5.8  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 23rd April 1746. Mary died aged only about 4 months and she was buried at West Malling on 24th August 1746.

1.3.5.9  ~~  Nicholas Alchin

Nicholas was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 19th July 1747. Nicholas married Dorothy Maddox at West Malling on 21st December 1777. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd D. Lovett and the witnesses to their wedding were Robert Litchford and John Edwards. The banns for their marriage were published at West Malling on 26th October and 2nd and 9th November 1777. Neither the groom nor the bride could sign their name and had to make their mark.

Nicholas and Dorothy do not appear to have had any surviving children. Dorothy died aged 64 years and she was buried at West Malling on 12th June 1814. Nicholas died at the age of 80 years and he was buried at West Malling on 10th October 1827.

1.3.6  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 18th February 1690. His grandfather, Thomas Alchin of Leybourne, bequeathed him 5 pounds in his will dated 1701. Thomas may have married Elizabeth Downard at Halling on 12th November 1708. This marriage is unproven and the only evidence in support of it is the names they gave their children and the proximity of Halling to Leybourne.

Thomas and Elizabeth baptised five children at Halling, a few miles north of Leybourne – Thomas (1709), William (1711), Mary (1716), Ann (1718) and Richard (1725). The possible descendants are given below but it has to be emphasised that as yet there is no proof that these relationships existed. Thomas was buried at Halling on 2nd May 1731. Elizabeth was buried at Halling on 29th March 1749.

There is another possible marriage that refers to this Thomas Alchin – Thomas and Sarah Alchin baptised several children at Wilmington from 1718.

1.3.6.1  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at Halling on 23rd July 1709. Thomas married Catherine and they had at least one child – Thomas (1736). Catherine may have died and if so Thomas may have moved to nearby Cuxton and subsequently married Elizabeth. If so he had  at least two more children – Mary (1741) and Robert (1744). Neither Thomas nor Catherine nor any children are recorded at Halling after 1736.

1.3.6.1.1  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at Halling on 28th March 1736. He died two months later and he was buried at Halling on 2nd June 1736. The burial register records that Thomas was an infant.

1.3.6.2  ~~  William Alchin

William was baptised at Halling on 17th February 1711. William may have married Sarah and if so they had four children – William (1738), John (1740), Ann (1741) and Thomas (1743).

1.3.6.2.1  ~~  William Alchin

William was baptised at Cuxton on 21st October 1738.

1.3.6.2.2  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at Cuxton on 20th April 1740.

1.3.6.2.3  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at Cuxton on 11th October 1741.

1.3.6.2.4   ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at Cuxton on 17th April 1743.

1.3.6.3  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at Halling on 17th November 1713.

1.3.6.4  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at Halling on 2nd December 1716.

1.3.6.5  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at Halling on 27th April 1718.

1.3.6.6  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at Halling on 16th May 1725.

1.3.7  ~~  Hannah Alchin

Hannah was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 2nd August 1691. Hannah married William Turner at Aylesford on 4th February 1720.

1.3.8  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 2nd April 1693. He died aged about 5 years and he was buried at Leybourne on 21st April 1698. His parents re-used his name in 1700 (see para 1.3.12).

1.3.9  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 26th October 1694.

1.3.10  ~~  Anthony Alchin

Anthony was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 2nd March 1697. He was the executor and beneficiary of his mother's estate when she died in 1727. At the time he was recorded on the letters of administration as a "servum" (servant) of Whitehall in London. He is therefore unlikely to have been the Anthony Alchin who was baptising children at West Malling in 1724 and East Malling from 1725 –1744.

As Anthony was in London in the mid 1720's it seems likely that he is the Anthony Alchin, who with his wife Ann (of whom no details are known) baptised five children at Hadleigh in Suffolk. Their five children were – Henry (1739), Ann (1740), Anthony (1742), Robert (1743) and Mary (1746). There is possibly another child Sarah (buried at Hadleigh 3rd April 1763) who was either born before the family moved to Hadleigh or perhaps was the name used by their daughter Ann to distinguish her from her mother.

Ann, or her daughter of the same name , was buried at Hadleigh on 15th March 1763. Anthony died aged 67 years and he was buried at Hadleigh on 7th June 1764. Soon afterwards Anthony's son (also named Anthony) returned to their ancestral village of Meopham where he probably inherited his grandmother's lands.

Note - This link has been only recently discovered and further research is required.

1.3.10.1  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at St Mary's church, Hadleigh on 14th February 1739. He did not survive for long however. Henry died on 31st March 1739 and he was buried at Hadleigh on 3rd April 1739.

1.3.10.2  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at St Mary's church, Hadleigh on 1st April 1740. Either she, or her mother, was buried at Hadleigh on 15th March 1763.

1.3.10.3  ~~  Anthony Alchin

Anthony was baptised at St Mary's church, Hadleigh on 21st April 1742 (the baptism register incorrectly gives his mother's name as Mary). Anthony's grandparents were married at Meopham in 1682 and owned land in several parishes around Leybourne, including Meopham probably. It is quite possible that he inherited property at Meopham from his father who was the sole beneficiary of his mother's will in 1727. Anthony may have moved to Meopham after the death of his father in 1764.

he 15th century Guildhall at Hadleigh in Suffolk

The 15th century Guildhall at Hadleigh in Suffolk

What is certain is that Anthony was living at Meopham before 1767 as at the time of his marriage he was working there as a carpenter. Anthony married Mary Higgins at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 27th January 1767. The banns were published by Vicar Samuel Savoys (?) at Meopham on 11th, 18th and 25th January 1767. The witnesses to their wedding were Elizabeth Mungan and John Alchin.

The register records that both Anthony and Mary belonged to the parish of Meopham. Mary was probably baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 14th June 1741, the daughter of Henry and Ann Higgins (Ann Higgins was probably buried at Meopham on 27th June 1743). There is no surviving record of the marriage of Henry and Ann Higgins nor of the baptism of any other of their children. The Higgins family are however found in the Meopham parish registers from as early as 1631. Mary and Anthony may have been distant cousins as a Thomas Higgins married Phoebe Alchin at Meopham on 24th September 1662.

Anthony and Mary Alchin had at least two children – Ann (1767) and William (1772). The parish assessments show that Anthony came into possession of property worth 6 pounds per annum from his late cousin John Alchin in 1781. He continued to hold these lands until his death when they were passed to his son William.

Anthony died in 1808 aged 65 years and he was buried at Meopham on 29th January 1808. Mary probably died in the following year aged 69 years and she was buried at Meopham on 28th February 1809.

1.3.10.3.1  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 27th December 1767. She probably married Henry Bevan at St Mary's church, Chatham on 25th December 1790. This marriage is confirmed by the 1886 genealogical chart shown on the previous page.

1.3.10.3.2  ~~  William Alchin

William was born at Meopham on 26th February 1772 and he was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 15th March 1772. Below is a facsimile of a genealogy chart (courtesy of Lorraine Kerr) first made in 1886 and sent by William Molto Alchin of Croydon, Surrey to his second cousin Sarah Pettit who was living in Sydney in 1914.

William married 24 year old Ann Knock at St Mary's church, Chatham on 5th May 1796 (William's sister Ann also married at Chatham). Chatham was a major shipbuilding centre and William was probably employed in the shipyards at the time. William and Ann had six sons – Anthony (1797), Henry (1798), William (1800), John (1804), George (1806) and Francis (1808).

On the death of his father in 1808 William inherited his property at Priesthood in the East Borough of Meopham valued at 6 pounds per annum. However by 1819 the value of the property had been reduced to 5 pounds per annum. William continued to retain this land until at least 1822.

Ann Knock died at Camer in 1813 aged 41 years and she was buried at Meopham on 10th October 1813. William subsequently married Jane Middleton at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Milton by Gravesend in Kent. William and Jane had at least one child – Thomas (1819). At this time William is described as a carpenter of Camer by the parish register. Thomas must have been disabled or retarded as he appears to have been abandoned by his family when they moved to London.

Thomas died in the Meopham Poor House aged 15 years - did William grant his land at Priesthood to the parish for the upkeep of his son perhaps. William and Jane may have had a second child – William (1822). A William Alchin of Camer aged 10 months was buried at Meopham on 16th March 1823 – there is no record of his baptism at Meopham.

At some point in the 1820's William moved his family to the East End of London, possibly via Croydon in Surrey. William was buried at All Saints' church, Poplar on 30th September 1826. His address in the burial register is given as Finch's Court, Poplar and his age is given as 65 years although ages in burial registers are notoriously inaccurate. If it had been entered as 55 years it would agree with his baptism date.

For further details of William Alchin's descendants see Volume 5, Part 5.

1.3.10.4  ~~  Robert Alchin

Robert was baptised at St Mary's church, Hadleigh on 22nd June 1746. The 1886 genealogy shown above includes Robert on the chart. The chart makes it clear that Robert married but few details are available. A Robert and Mary Alchin baptised a daughter Ann at Hadleigh in 1774. The Alchin family disappear from the Hadleigh parish records after that date.

1.3.10.4.1  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at St Mary's church, Hadleigh on 12th August 1774. Ann probably married Thomas Palmer at Newmarket St Mary in Suffolk on 29th May 1792. Thomas and Ann had at least four children – William (1793), Thomas (1794), Charles (1801) and George (1804).

There is no surviving record of any member of this family in any subsequent English census and it seems likely that they emigrated to America or one of the growing British colonies.

1.3.10.5  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at St Mary's church, Hadleigh (above) on 22nd December 1746. Mary died on 8th August 1747 and she was buried at Hadleigh on 12th August 1747.

1.3.11  ~~  Robert Alchin

Robert was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 10th April 1698. He died almost straightaway and he was buried at Leybourne on 14th April 1698.

1.3.12  ~~  Richard Alchin

Richard was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Leybourne on 26th February 1700. He married Jane and they had at least four children – Mary (1732), Jane (1734), Richard (1736) and Henry (1738). Their children were all baptised at West Malling. Richard was probably buried at West Malling on 14th July 1738 at the age of about 38 years.

It is possible that his widow married John Polligate at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 2nd May 1740 (the wedding register confirms that Jane was a widow and John was a single man and both were inhabitants of the parish of West Malling). Jane Polligate of Otham was buried at Aylesford on 6th October 1786.

1.3.12.1  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 25th October 1732.

1.3.12.2  ~~  Jane Alchin
