Volume 3 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings. By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued) 1.3.12.2.4 ~~ William Webb William was born at Rochester on 22nd March 1762. He married Mary and they had six children – Elizabeth (1785), William (1786), John (1788), George (1790), Richard (1793) and Mary Ann (1795). At the time of his father's death in 1798 William was running the family's mill at Harrietsham in Kent. This mill was left to William in his father's will dated 1799 and it appears to be in part recompense for the payment by William of the debts of his brother-in-law William Pack. The relevant part of his father's will is reproduced below:
1.3.12.2.4.1 ~~ Elizabeth Webb Elizabeth was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Harrietsham on 27th April 1785. 1.3.12.2.4.2 ~~ William Webb William was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Harrietsham on 26th July 1786. 1.3.12.2.4.3 ~~ John Webb John was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Harrietsham on 30th September 1788. 1.3.12.2.4.4 ~~ George Webb George was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Harrietsham on 17th November 1790. George probably inherited his father's estate so it seems likely that his elder brothers died in childhood. George married Mary Murton in about 1817; she was born at Sittingbourne in 1795 and her elder brother was the owner of Tunstall House, Tunstall. George and Mary had at least twelve children – Mary (1818), George (1820), Henry (1822), Edward (1824), Eliza (1826), Charlotte (1828), Emily (1830), Agnes (1832), William (1834), Katherine (1836), Louisa (1839) and Charles (1841). It is likely that there were others who died in infancy. As happened to many families in their social bracket, very few of their daughters ever married. This probably stemmed from the fact that although the family were relatively wealthy, they were not rich enough to provide sizable dowries to obtain suitable husbands for their daughters or they were unwilling to part with property to pay for the dowries. The 1841 census records that George was a Yeoman and he and his wife and ten of their children were living at The Parsonage, Hartlip. There were also several servants who were employed by the family and who lived in the house. The 1851 census records that George farmed 500 acres and employed 21 labourers on his farm at Hartlip. He and his wife and seven of their children were living at Parsonage House, Hartlip Street, Hartlip. The 1861 census records that George was a landowner (282 acres) and he and his wife and four of their unmarried children lived at Parsonage House, Hartlip. Most of the remainder of their children were living with Mary's elder brother William Murton at Tunstall House. George died sometime before 1871. The 1871 census records that Mary was a widowed landowner and she and her three spinster daughters were still living at The Parsonage, Hartlip. Mary died sometime before 1881. 1.3.12.2.4.4.1 ~~ Mary A. Webb Mary was born at Tunstall in about 1818. The 1841 census records that Mary was living with her parents at The Parsonage, Hartlip.
