By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued) 1.3.12.2.10 ~~ Richard Webb Richard was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 21st April 1771. Richard was a farmer of Bearsted. He married Mary Ducksbury Sale at the church of St Clement Danes, London on 12th November 1790. Mary was christened at Bearsted on 22nd May 1768, the daughter of Hodsall Sale and Mary Curtis. Hodsall is the name of a small village between the Mallings and Meopham. Richard and Mary had eight children – Mary (1791), Richard (1792), Jane (1794), Elizabeth (1797), Ann (1799), Jesse (1801), Sarah (1804) and William (1806). Richard was the Executor of his fathers will dated 1798. His father left Richard 4 acres of land at Bearsted and a share in his Bank of England stock. Richard however never applied for the administration of his father's estate. This was left to Richard's son Jesse Webb to do in 1826. Richard was also an Executor of the will of his uncle Richard Alchin of Maidstone who died in 1803. His uncle also left him the sum of 20 pounds. Mary died aged 50 years and she was buried at Bearsted on 5th February 1819. Richard died aged 52 years and he was buried at Bearsted on 24th October 1823. 1.3.12.2.10.1 ~~ Mary Ducksbury Webb Mary was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 4th October 1791. She married William Manwaring at Bearsted on 1st January 1811. William was born at Goudhurst in 1788. William and Mary had eight children – William (1811), Mary (1813), Ann (1816), Jesse (1823), William (1825), Hodsoll (1827), Margaretta (1829) and John (1831). The parish register of All Saints' church, Maidstone records that in the 1820's William was a grocer of Maidstone. Later he was a policeman for many years. Mary was left the sum of 20 pounds as a bequest when her uncle Jesse Webb died in 1823. The 1841 census records that William was a Police Constable and he and his wife and their three children were living at Maidstone. Mary died before 1851. The 1851 census records that William was a widowed Police Constable and he and his spinster daughter were living at 9 Camden Street, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that William was a widowed superannuated policeman. He was living at 8 Camden Street, Maidstone with his unmarried daughter, his widowed daughter in law and his granddaughter. 1.3.12.2.10.1.1 ~~ William Manwaring William was born at Goudhurst in 1811. He died aged 3 years in 1814. 1.3.12.2.10.1.2 ~~ Mary Ducksbury Manwaring Mary was born at Goudhurst in 1813. She never married. She was not recorded with her parents in the 1841 census and she may have gone into service or else was minding an elderly relative. The 1851 census records that the spinster was living with her widowed father at 9 Camden Street, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that Mary was employed as a shoe binder. She was a spinster and she was looking after her widowed father at 8 Camden Street, Maidstone. Mary died at Maidstone in 1867 aged 53 years (Maidstone 1867 June qtr Volume 2a Page 323). 1.3.12.2.10.1.3 ~~ Ann Manwaring Ann was born, possibly at Goudhurst, in 1816. She was not recorded with her parents in the 1841 census and she may have gone into service or else was minding an elderly relative. Ann died in 1880 aged about 64 years. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4 ~~ Jesse Manwaring Jesse was born at Thurnham, Kent in 1823. The 1841 census records that Jesse (no occupation is given) was living with his parents at Maidstone. Jesse married Sarah Turner in about 1847; she was born at Maidstone in 1825 and she was the daughter of John and Sarah Turner. Jesse and Sarah had three children – William (1848), Jesse (1849) and Sarah (1852). The 1851 census records that Jesse was a porter and he and his wife and their two children were living with his parents in law at 2 Orchard Street, Maidstone. Jesse may have died in 1859 aged 36 years (Maidstone 1859 September qtr Volume 2a Page 309). The 1861 census records that Sarah was widowed and she was working in a mill. She and her daughter were lodging with her father in law William Manwaring at 8 Camden Street, Maidstone. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1 ~~ William Manwaring William was born at Maidstone in 1848. The 1841 census records that William (no occupation is given) was living with his parents at Maidstone. The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with is extended family at 2 Orchard Street, Maidstone. William was not living with his mother at the time of the 1861 census and he may have been away in service. The 1871 census records that William was an unmarried indoor servant for Dr Thomas Davisdon at Shaftesbury House, Paddington. William married Mary (her surname may have been Maws ? and the date and place of their marriage is not yet established); she was born at Epsom in 1851. William and Mary had at least six children – William (1873), Alice (1875), Arthur (1880), George (1884), Albert (1886) and Evelyn (1888). The 1881 census incorrectly records that William was unmarried and he was employed as a butler by John Birkett, a surgeon, at 59 Green Street, St George Hanover in London. His wife and their three eldest children were living at 20 Seymour Place, London. Perhaps William couldn't get suitable work as a married man. The 1891 census records that William was a cab driver and he and his large family were living at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that William was employed as a cab driver and he and his wife and their six children were living at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1.1 ~~ William Manwaring William was born at Marylebone in 1873. The 1881 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his mother at 20 Seymour Place, London. The 1891 census records that William was a carman and he was living with his parents at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that William was unmarried. He was working as a carman and he was living with his parents at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1.2 ~~ Alice Manwaring Alice was born at Marylebone in 1875. The 1881 census records that Alice was a school girl and she was living with her mother at 20 Seymour Place, London. The 1891 census records that Alice (no occupation was given) was living with her parents at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that she was an unmarried kitchen maid and she was living with her parents at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1.3 ~~ Arthur Manwaring Arthur was born at Marylebone in 1880. The 1881 census records that the infant boy was living with his mother at 20 Seymour Place, London. The 1891 census records that Arthur was a school boy and he was living with his family at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that Arthur was unmarried. He was employed as a mattress maker and he was living with his parents at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1.4 ~~ George Manwaring George was born at Kensington in 1884. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that George was employed as a telegraph messenger and he was living with his family at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1.5 ~~ Albert Manwaring Albert was born at Kensington in 1886. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that Albert was employed as an office boy and he was living with his parents at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.1.6 ~~ Evelyn Manwaring Evelyn was born at Kensington in 1888. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 24 Elgin Mews, Kensington. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 24 Elgin Lane, Kensington. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.2 ~~ Jesse Manwaring Jesse was born at Maidstone in 1849 (Maidstone 1849 December qtr Volume 5 Page 342). The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at 2 Orchard Street, Maidstone. He is not recorded with his mother in the 1861 census and he may have been in service or staying with other relatives. Jesse married Rebecca in 1879 (Westminster 1879 June qtr Volume 1a Page 82*); she was born at Lambourne, Essex in 1852. The 1881 census records that Jesse was a billiards maker. He and his wife had no surviving children and they lived at 60 Clarence Gate, St Pancras in London. Jesse and Rebecca later had at least two children – George (1883) and Helen (1887). The 1891 census records that Jesse was a porter and he and his young family were living at 171 Victoria Street, Kensington. The 1901 census records that Jesse was still working as a hall porter in a block of flats where he lived with his wife and their two children at 171 Victoria Street, Westminster. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.2.1 ~~ George Ernest Manwaring George was born at St Pancras in 1883 (Pancras 1883 March qtr Volume 1b Page 13). The 1891 census records that George was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 171 Victoria Street, Westminster. The 1901 census records that he was employed as a library assistant and he was living with his parents at the same address. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.2.2 ~~ Helen Manwaring Helen was born at Islington in 1887. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 171 Victoria Street, Westminster .The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at the same address in Westminster. 1.3.12.2.10.1.4.3 ~~ Sarah Manwaring Sarah was born at Maidstone in 1852. The 1861 census records that Sarah was a school girl and she and her widowed mother were lodging with her grandfather William Manwaring at 8 Camden Street, Maidstone. 1.3.12.2.10.1.5 ~~ William Henry Manwaring William was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 2nd September 1825. He migrated to Australia where he died sometime after 1876. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6 ~~ Hodsoll Manwaring Hodsoll was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 2nd September 1827. The 1841 census records that Hodsoll (no occupation is given) was living with his parents at Maidstone. Hodsoll married Eliza Ann Furber in 1854 (Maidstone 1854 September qtr Volume 2a Page 637); she was born at Paddington in London in about 1828. Hodsoll and Eliza had six children – Charles (1855), George (1857), Arthur (1860), Jessie (1862), Frank (1865), Eliza (1867). The 1861 census records that Hodsoll was a tidewaiter (a Customs Officer who cleared ships on their arrival from overseas ports) at the port of Gravesend with Customs and Excise. He and his wife and their three eldest children were living at 53 Edwin Street, Milton by Gravesend. The 1871 census records that Hodsoll was an Examining Officer with Customs and he and his wife and their five children were living at 8 Lincoln Street, Mile End Old Town. The 1881 census records that Hodsoll was an Exams Officer with the Customs Service. He and his wife and their two unmarried children were living at 2 Salisbury Villas, Salisbury Road, West Ham. Visiting them were Nancy Lovegrove (born Paddington in 1840 and possibly Eliza's younger sister) and her son Charles W. Lovegrove (born Tunbridge Wells in 1870). The 1891 census records that Hodsoll was a retired Customs Officer and he and his wife were living with their married daughter's family (Harold and Jessie Goodman) at 47 Caseland Road, Hackney. The 1901 census records that Hodsoll was a retired Customs officer. He and his wife and their unmarried son Frank were living at 118 Brown Avenue, East Ham in Essex. Next door lived Hodsoll and Eliza's son Arthur and his family. Hodsoll died in 1903 aged 76 years (West Ham 1903 December qtr Volume 4a Page 172). 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1 ~~ Charles Edward Manwaring Charles was born at Milton near Gravesend in 1855. The 1861 census records that Charles was a school boy and he was living with his family at 53 Edwin Street, Milton by Gravesend. The 1871 census records that he was a commercial clerk and he was living with his parents at 8 Lincoln Street, Mile End Old Town. Charles married Emma; she was born at Bow in the East End of London in 1861. The 1881 census records that Charles was employed as a clerk. He and his wife were living at Hackney in London. They were probably newly married and at that stage they had no children. Also living with them was a cousin Kate Beadley (born at Gravesend in 1866). Charles and Emma had at least nine children – Edith (1881), Caroline (1884), Grace (1886), Ralph (1889), William (1891), Guy (1892), Elsie (1894), Jessie (1896) and Albert (1898). The 1891 census records that Charles was a clerk to a lithographer and he and his wife and three eldest surviving children were living at 4 Oak Villas, Leytonstone. The 1901 census records that Charles was employed as a mercantile clerk and he and wife and their seven surviving children were living at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone in Essex. At the end of the First World War (in which their son Guy was killed) Charles and Emma were living at 'Ellesmere', 135 Fillebrook Road, Leytonstone. Charles died in 1932 aged 77 years. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.1 ~~ Edith Manwaring Edith was born at Leytonstone in 1881 (West Ham 1881 December qtr Volume 4a Page 172). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 4 Oak Villas, Leytonstone. The 1901 census records that she was unmarried and she was employed as an assistant in a chinaware showroom. Edith was living with her parents at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.2 ~~ Caroline Ethel M.C. Manwaring Caroline was born at Leytonstone in 1884 (West Ham 1884 June qtr Volume 4a Page 228). She is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1891 or 1901 census and it is likely that she died whilst still a child. 1.3.1.2.2.10.1.6.1.3 ~~ Grace Furber Manwaring Grace was born at Leytonstone in 1886 (West Ham 1886 March qtr Volume 4a Page 219). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 4 Oak Villas, Leytonstone. The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. Grace was probably still going to school. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.4 ~~ Ralph Charles Manwaring Ralph was born at Leytonstone in 1889 (West Ham 1889 September qtr Volume 4a Page 246). The 1901 census records that the toddler was living with his family at 4 Oak Villas, Leytonstone. At the time of the 1901 census Ralph was a school boy and he was living with his family at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.5 ~~ William Hodsoll Manwaring William was born at Leytonstone in 1891 (West Ham 1891 December qtr Volume 4a Page 248). At the time of the 1901 census William was a school boy and he was living with his family at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. After leaving school William worked as a clerk. William married Margaret Fleetwood on 3rd April 1915 at Leyton parish church. The witnesses to the ceremony were G.B Manwaring and Kathleen Fleetwood. Margaret was born at Leyton on 21st October 1892 to Henry William Fleetwood (a telegraph engineer) and Maria Bridges. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.6 ~~ Guy Philip Manwaring Grey was born at Leytonstone in 1892 (West Ham 1892 December qtr Volume 4a Page 270). At the time of the 1901 census Grey was a school boy and he was living with his family at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. Guy enlisted in the British Army during World War One. He was assigned to 2nd/4th Battalion of the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) with regimental number 295077. Guy reached the rank of Lance-Corporal. He was killed in action during the Battle of Passchendaele on 26th October 1917 aged only 25 years. Guy's body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.7 ~~ Elsie Violet Manwaring Elsie was born at Leytonstone in 1894 (West Ham 1894 June qtr Volume 4a Page 268). The 1901 census records that Elsie was a school girl and she was living with her family at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.8 ~~ essie Ducksbury Manwaring Jessie was born at Leytonstone in 1896 (West Ham 1896 June qtr Volume 4a Page 277). Jessie died a few months later (West Ham 1896 September qtr Volume 4a Page 158). 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.1.9 ~~ Albert Harold Manwaring Albert was born at Leytonstone in 1898 (West Ham 1898 June qtr Volume 4a Page 313). The 1901 census records that Albert was living with his family at 52 Abbott's Park Road, Leytonstone. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.2 ~~ George Hodsoll Manwaring George was born at Milton near Gravesend in 1857. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 53 Edwin Street, Milton by Gravesend. The 1871 census records that George was a school boy and he was living with his family at 8 Lincoln Street, Mile End Old Town. George married Mary; she was born at Hartlepool, Durham in about 1861. They had at least five children – George (1880), Minnie (1882), Herbert (1885), Victor (1887) and Clarice (1891). The 1881 census records that George was a foreman (possibly in a military depot) while his wife was employed as a tailoress. He and his wife and their 7 month old son were living at 2 Salisbury Road, West Ham. George's parents lived only a few doors away. The 1891 census records that George was a storeholder at Weedon Barracks, Weedon in Northamptonshire with his wife and their three eldest surviving children. The 1901 census records that George was employed as a "storeholder (army ordnance depot)". He and his family were living at the Old Store Yard, Weedon. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.2.1 ~~ George F.A. Manwaring George was born at Mile End Old Town in London in late 1880. At the time of the census the following year the 7 month old infant was living with his parents at 2 Salisbury Road, West Ham. George is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1891 census by which time he had probably died. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.2.2 ~~ Minnie E. Manwaring Minnie was born at West Ham in 1882. The 1891 census records that Minnie was a school girl and she was living with her family at Weedon Barracks, Weedon. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.2.3 ~~ Herbert M. Manwaring Herbert was born at Weedon, Northamptonshire in 1885. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Weedon Barracks, Weedon. The 1901 census records that he was employed as a railway goods clerk. Herbert was living with his family at the Old Store Yard, Weedon. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.2.4 ~~ Victor William Manwaring Victor was born at Weedon in 1887 (Daventry 1887 June qtr Volume 3b Page 107). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Weedon Barracks, Weedon. The 1901 census records that Victor was a school boy and he was living with his family at the Old Store Yard, Weedon. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.2.5 ~~ Clarice Edith Manwaring Clarice was born at Weedon in 1891 (Daventry 1891 December qtr Volume 3b Page 109). The 1901 census records that Clarice was a school girl and she was living with her family at the Old Store Yard, Weedon. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.3 ~~ Arthur Furber Manwaring Arthur was born at Gravesend in 1860. The 1861 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with his family at 53 Edwin Street, Milton by Gravesend. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Lincoln Street, Mile End Old Town. Arthur married Kate Sharland Burden in 1891 (West Ham 1891 March qtr Volume 4a Page 94); she was born at Bow in the East End of London in 1866. The 1891 census records that Arthur was a ship's officer and the newly weds were living at 38 Wentworth Road, East Ham. Arthur and Kate had at least two children – Reginald (1893) and Winifred (1896). The 1901 census records that Arthur was a master mariner (?). He and his wife and their two children were living next door to his parents at 120 Brown Avenue, East Ham. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.3.1 ~~ Reginald William Manwaring Reginald was born at Manor Park, Essex in 1893 (West Ham 1893 December qtr Volume 4a Page 132). At the time of the 1901 census the school boy was living with his family at 120 Brown Avenue, East Ham. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.3.2 ~~ Winifred Kathleen Manwaring Winifred was born at Manor Park in 1896 (West Ham 1896 September qtr Volume 4a Page 231). The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at 120 Brown Avenue, East Ham. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.4 ~~ Jessie Manwaring Jessie was born at Gravesend in 1862 (Gravesend 1862 June qtr Volume 2a Page 310). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 8 Lincoln Street, Mile End Old Town. The 1881 census records that Jessie was unmarried and she was living with her parents at 2 Salisbury Villas, Salisbury Road, West Ham. Jessie married Harold Goodman in 1884 (West Ham 1884 September qtr Volume 4a Page 41); he was born at Mile End in 1861. Harold and Jessie had at least three children – Lillie (1885), Dorothy (1887) and Arthur (1890). The 1891 census records that Harold was a 'manager – builder's merchant' and he and his wife were living with his parents in law at 47 Caseland Road, Hackney. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.4.1 ~~ Lillie M. Goodman Lillie was born at Leytonstone in 1885. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her extended family at 47 Caseland Road, Hackney. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.4.2 ~~ Dorothy J. Goodman Dorothy was born at Bow in 1887. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her extended family at 47 Caseland Road, Hackney. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.4.3 ~~ Arthur H. Goodman Arthur was born at Bow in 1890. The 1891 census records that the toddler was living with his extended family at 47 Caseland Road, Hackney. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.5 ~~ Frank William Manwaring Frank was born at Mile End in London in 1865. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Lincoln Street, Mile End Old Town. The 1881 census records that Frank was employed as a solicitor's clerk and he was living with his parents at 2 Salisbury Villas, Salisbury Road, West Ham. Perhaps office employment did not agree with him. The 1901 census records that he was employed as a carpenter. Frank was still unmarried and he was living with his parents at 118 Brown Avenue, East Ham. 1.3.12.2.10.1.6.6 ~~ Eliza Mary Ann Manwaring Eliza was born at Mile End Old Town in 1867. Eliza is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1871 census by which time she must have died. 1.3.12.2.10.1.7 ~~ Margaretta Manwaring Margaretta was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 28th October 1829. Margaretta died a few months later and she was buried at Bearsted on 26 February 1830. 1.3.12.2.10.1.8 ~~ John Manwaring John was born in 1831 and he died aged 4 years at Maidstone in 1835. There is no record of his baptism or burial at All Saints' church, Maidstone. 1.3.12.2.10.2 ~~ Richard Webb Richard was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 20th November 1792. He married Fanny Kitney at Hollingbourn on 27th August 1822. They had three children – Fanny (1823), Richard (1826) and Ann (1828). Richard was left a legacy of 100 pounds by his uncle Jesse Webb in 1823. The children were orphaned when they were very young. Their mother Fanny died aged 26 years and she was buried at Bearsted on 21st December 1829. Their father died aged 38 years and he was buried at Bearsted on 19th June 1831. 1.3.12.2.10.2.1 ~~ Fanny Webb Fanny was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 12th October 1823. 1.3.12.2.10.2.2 ~~ Richard Webb Richard was born at Hollingbourn in 1826. 1.3.12.2.10.2.3 ~~ Ann Webb Ann was born at Hollingbourn in 1828. 1.3.12.2.10.3 ~~ Jane Webb Jane was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 5th August 1794. She married Thomas Betts at Bearsted on 29th December 1814; he may have been born at Langley in 1782. Thomas and Jane had at least nine children – Mary (1815), Thomas (1816), Ellen (1818), Clement (1820), Anna (1821), twins George and Richard (1823), Daniel (1828) and Harriett (1832). Their first child was baptised at Bearsted but the other eight were baptised at Chart next Sutton where Thomas Betts was a farmer. Jane was bequeathed the sum of 20 pounds when her uncle Jesse Webb died in 1823. Thomas died at Chart Sutton in 1833 aged 51 years and he was buried at Langley on 24th June 1833. The 1841 census records that Jane ran a boarding house for school boys and she and two of her children were living at Upper Road, Sutton Valence. The 1851 census records that Jane was widowed and she was living with her son Richard at Gabriel Hill, Maidstone. Jane died at Brenchley in 1868 aged 74 years and she was buried at Langley on 25th December 1868. 1.3.12.2.10.3.1 ~~ Mary Jane Betts Mary was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 7th September 1815. 1.3.12.2.10.3.2 ~~ Thomas Betts Thomas was born on 1st November 1816 and he and his younger sister Ellen were baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 13th October 1818. Thomas died in 1839 aged almost 23 years and he was buried at Langley on 7th September 1839. 1.3.12.2.10.3.3 ~~ Ellen Betts Ellen was born at Chart and she and her elder brother Thomas were baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 13th October 1818. The 1841 census records that Ellen was living with her mother at Upper Road, Sutton Valence. 1.3.12.2.10.3.4 ~~ Clement Betts Clement was born at Chart and he was baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 23rd May 1820. 1.3.12.2.10.3.5 ~~ Anna Maria Betts Anna was born at Chart on 6th December 1821. She and her twin younger brothers were baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 19th January 1824. Anna may have died in 1840 aged 19 years (Shoreditch 1840 June qtr Volume 2 Page 240). 1.3.12.2.10.3.6 ~~ George Betts George and his twin brother Richard were born at Chart on 14th November 1823. They were baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 19th January 1824. The 1841 census records that George was an apprentice grocer and he was living with his uncle and aunt (George and Ann Webb) at Upper Mount Road, Maidstone. George married Catherine Evill in 1849 (E London 1849 March qtr Volume 2 Page 172); she was born at Bath in 1821. George and Catherine had at least two children – George (1850 and Fanny (1855). The 1851 census records that George was a commercial traveller and he and his wife and their son were living at Lower Clapham, Hackney in London. The 1871 census records that George was a commercial traveller and he and his wife and their daughter were living at 1 Graham Street, Hackney. Also living with them was their nephew Samuel G. Birch (born at Sutton Valence in 1864). The 1881 census records that George was a commercial traveller in tea. He and his wife and his nephew were living at 28 St Johns Road, London. George died prior to 1901 – possibly in 1889 aged 66 years (Camberwell 1889 March qtr Volume 1d Page 563). The 1901 census records that Catherine was widowed and she and her unmarried daughter were living in three rooms at 9 Mentone Road, Islington. Also visiting them that night was Alice Laughton a 45 year old spinster from Finchley. 1.3.12.2.10.3.6.1 ~~ George Arthur Betts George was born at Camden Town in 1850. The 1851 census records that the 11 month old infant was living his family at Lower Clapham, Hackney. 1.3.12.2.10.3.6.2 ~~ Fanny C. Betts Fanny was born at Hackney in 1855. The 1871 census records that Fanny was living with her parents at 1 Graham Street, Hackney. The 1881 census records that she was unmarried. Fanny was employed by her widowed uncle Richard Betts as a housekeeper at his home at Green Hill House # 2, Otham. The 1901 census records that Fanny remained unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother at 9 Mentone Road, Islington. 1.3.12.2.10.3.7 ~~ Richard Betts Richard and his twin brother George were born at Chart on 14th November 1823. They were baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 19th January 1824. The 1841 census records that Richard was an apprentice saddler and he was living with Jesse Joy at Bearsted. Richard may have married in 1848 to Charlotte (Maidstone 1848 March qtr Volume 5 Page 339; she was born at Otham in 1818. However his wife died prior to 1881 and it is unclear whether they had any children. The 1851 census records that Richard was a saddler employing three men. He and his widowed mother were living at Gabriel Hill, Maidstone. The 1861 and 1871 census record that Richard was a farmer and he and his wife were living with Elizabeth Betts, possibly the widow of Richard's elder brother Thomas. They were farming at Green Hill House, Otham. The 1881 census records that Richard was a widowed farmer of 31 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy. He and his two nieces and a servant girl were living at Green Hill House # 2, Otham. Richard probably died later the same year aged 57 years (Maidstone 1881 December qtr Volume 2a Page 353). 1.3.12.2.10.3.8 ~~ Daniel Betts Daniel was baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 21st October 1828. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his mother at Upper Road, Sutton Valence. Daniel moved to London where he married Louisa Sarah Frederica Milbourne in 1850 (St Lukes 1850 June qtr Volume 2 Page 320); she was born at Clerkenwell in 1823. The 1851 census records that Daniel was a law stationer and he and his wife and their infant son were living at 6 Searles Place, Liberty of the Rolls (probably part of The Temple) in inner London. Daniel and Louisa had at least four children – Thomas (1851), Arthur (1852), William (1860) and Clara (1862). The 1881 census records that Daniel was a law stationer and he and his wife and four of their children were living at 46 Doughty Street, London. Louisa died in 1886 aged 63 years (St Pancras 1886 March qtr Volume 1b Page 61). Daniel is not recorded in the 1901 English census by which time he had probably died. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.1 ~~ Thomas Percival Milbourne Betts Thomas was born in London in 1851 (Strand 1851 March qtr Volume 1 Page 463). The 1851 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with his family at 6 Seatles Place, Liberty of the Rolls in inner London. The 1881 census records that Thomas was an unmarried journalist and he was living with his parents at 46 Doughty Street, London. Thomas married at least twice. Firstly he married either Anne Ehrenberg or Isabel Mary Wyndham in 1889 (London C 1889 December qtr Volume 1c Page 114). Thomas' wife either died or they were divorced. He subsequently married again (to Mary Ann Moors?) in 1898 (London C 1898 March qtr Volume 1c Page 29). Thomas is not recorded in the 1901 English census. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.2 ~~ Arthur Betts Arthur was born in London in 1852 (Strand 1852 December qtr Volume 1b Page 384). The 1881 census records that Arthur was unmarried and he was employed as a law stationer. He was living with his parents at 46 Doughty Street, London. Arthur married Caroline Emma Edwards in 1893 (St Pancras 1893 September qtr Volume 1b Page 28); she was born at Holborn in 1869. Arthur and Caroline had at least three children – Freda (1894), Joyce (1897) and Arthur (1898). The 1901 census records that Arthur ran a business as a law stationer (inherited from his father perhaps). He and his family and their three servants (a nurse, cook and housemaid) were living at 7 Caroline Place, St Pancras. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.2.1 ~~ Freda Nellie M. Betts Freda was born at Grays Inn in Central London in 1894 (Holborn 1894 September qtr Volume 1b Page 642). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 7 Caroline Place, St Pancras. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.2.2 ~~ Joyce Milbourne Betts Joyce was born at St Pancras in 1897 (Pancras 1897 June qtr Volume 1b Page 55). The 1901 census records that Joyce was living with her family at 7 Caroline Place, St Pancras. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.2.3 ~~ Arthur John Betts Arthur was born at St Pancras in 1898 (Pancras 1898 December qtr Volume 1b Page 44). The 1901 census records that Arthur was living with his family at 7 Caroline Place, St Pancras. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.3 ~~ William Henry Betts William was born at Lincolns Inn in central London in 1860 (Strand 1860 June qtr Volume 1b Page 429). The 1881 census records that he was unmarried (no occupation is recorded) and he was living with his parents at 46 Doughty Street, London. The 1901 census records that William remained unmarried. He was recorded as a law stationer (own account – perhaps in partnership with his elder brother) and he was living in two rooms at 36 St James Street, Holborn. 1.3.12.2.10.3.8.4 ~~ Clara Beall Betts Clara was born in London in 1862 (Strand 1862 March qtr Volume 1b Page 479). The 1881 census records that she was living with her parents at 46 Doughty Street, London. 1.3.12.2.10.3.9 ~~ Harriett Betts Harriett was baptised at St Michael's church, Chart next Sutton on 17th April 1832. 1.3.12.2.10.4 ~~ Elizabeth Webb Elizabeth was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 10th March 1797. Elizabeth was bequeathed the sum of 20 pounds when her uncle Jesse Webb died in 1823. She married Samuel Birch by licence at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 26th October 1824. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd W.H. Miller and the witnesses were John Thomas Jackson and Jane Johnson. Sam was born at Bromley, Staffordshire in 1795. Elizabeth and Sam had at least four children – Elizabeth (1825), Fanny (1830), Mary (1832) and Samuel (1834). The parish register records that Sam was a grocer of Maidstone. The 1851 census records that Sam was a grocer and he and his wife and their two daughters were living at 4 Romney Place, Maidstone. Sam may have died in 1858 (Maidstone 1858 June qtr Volume 2a Page 306). 1.3.12.2.10.4.1 ~~ Elizabeth Birch Elizabeth was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 16th November 1825. The 1851 census records that Elizabeth was a spinster and she was living with her parents at 4 Romney Place, Maidstone. 1.3.12.2.10.4.2 ~~ Fanny Webb Birch Fanny was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 24th February 1830. She died aged almost 2 years and she was buried at Bearsted on 17th February 1832. 1.3.12.2.10.4.3 ~~ Mary Jane Birch Mary was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 14th November 1832. The 1851 census records that Mary was living with her parents at 4 Romney Place, Maidstone. 1.3.12.2.10.4.4 ~~ Samuel George Birch Samuel was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 22nd October 1834. The 1851 census records that Samuel was an apprentice grocer and draper to James Unicombe at Headcorn. Samuel possibly had a son of the same name who was born at Sutton Valence in about 1864. 1.3.12.2.10.5 ~~ Anne Webb Ann was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 16th October 1799. She married her cousin George Foreman at Bearsted on 13th August 1822. They had ten children (see para 1.3.10.2.6.3). Ann was the left the sum of 20 pounds when her uncle Jesse Webb died in 1823. 1.3.12.2.10.6 ~~ Jesse Webb Jesse was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 15th December 1801. Jesse was a farmer at Bearsted like his father. Jesse was the major beneficiary of his uncle Jesse Webb, no doubt after whom he was named, when he died in 1823. Jesse junior was bequeathed 400 pounds and the residue of his uncle's estate after the payment of all debts and legacies. Jesse was a witness at the wedding of his sister Sarah to Thomas Chaplin at Maidstone in 1824. 1.3.12.2.10.7 ~~ Sarah Webb Sarah was baptised at Holy Cross church, Bearsted on 22nd February 1804. Sarah was bequeathed the sum of 20 pounds by her uncle Jesse Webb in 1823. She married Thomas Pepperell Chaplin by licence at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 9th February 1824. The ceremony was performed by the curate Rev'd W.H. Miller and the witnesses were Jesse Webb, Ann Betts and Robert Chaplin. Thomas was baptised at Plymouth, Devonshire on 13th November 1799 and he was the son of Thomas Chaplin (1766 - 22.10.1832) and Lydia Pepperell (1766 – 10.9.1832). In 1823 Thomas was apprenticed as a shoemaker to his father at Maidstone. The parish register records that in the 1820s and 1830s Thomas was a shoemaker of Maidstone. In 1837 however he is recorded as an innkeeper of Maidstone. Thomas and Sarah had eight children – Thomas (1825), Lydia (1828), Sarah (1829), William (1831), George (1833), Charles (1835), Eliza (1837) and Edmund (1843). The 1841 census records that Thomas was a victualler and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Middle Row, High Street, Maidstone. Thomas died at St Faith Street, Maidstone aged 42 years on 11th July 1842 (Maidstone 1842 September qtr Volume 5 Page 231) and he was buried at Maidstone on 15th July 1842. The 1851 census records that Sarah was a widowed monthly nurse and she and her three children were living at Oliver's Yard, Bank Street, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that Sarah was widowed and she was living with two of her unmarried sons at 17 Romney Place, Maidstone. Sarah died in early 1871 aged 67 years (Maidstone 1871 March qtr Volume 2a Page 394) and she was buried at Maidstone on 8th February 1871. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1 ~~ Thomas Chaplin Thomas was born at Maidstone on 18th December 1825 and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on the following day. He married Sarah Bate at Southwark, Surrey on 16th August 1846 (Southwark 1846 December qtr Volume 4 Page 479). Sarah was baptised at Maidstone on 31st October 1827 and she was the daughter of John Bate and Sarah Green. Thomas and Sarah had five children – Sarah (1847), Thomas (1849), Ellen (1850), Emma (1853) and Clara (1863). Three of their children died in infancy. The 1851 census records that Thomas was a newsvendor and he and his wife and their two surviving children were living at 171 Tooley Street, Horsleydown. Also staying with them were Sarah's widowed mother and Thomas' younger brother George. The 1861 census records that Sarah was a stationers wife (her husband was not present that day) and she and her daughter were living at 31 Mill Street, Maidstone. The 1871 census records that Thomas was a married tea warehouseman and he was lodging at 3 Brook Street, Lambeth. The 1881 census incorrectly gives his age as 61 years, he was only 55 years old at the time. He was widowed and appears to have fallen on hard times. The census records that Thomas was an unemployed labourer and he was living in a lodging house with 38 other men at 46 Stamford Street, Southwark. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.1 ~~ Sarah Chaplin Sarah was born at Southwark in 1847 (St Olave 1847 September qtr Volume 4 Page 445) and she was baptised at Horsleydown, Surrey on 1st August 1847. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her extended family at 171 Tooley Street, Horsleydown. Sarah died two months later aged 4 years and she was buried at Horsleydown on 8th June 1851 (St Olave 1851 June qtr Volume 4 Page 344). 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.2 ~~ Thomas Chaplin Thomas was born in south London in 1849 (St Olave 1849 June qtr Volume 4 Page 3*4) and he was baptised at Horsleydown on 13th May 1849. Thomas died aged about 6 months and he was buried at Horsleydown on 30th December 1849. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3 ~~ Ellen Chaplin Ellen was born at Southwark on 31st October 1850 and she was baptised at Horsleydown on 17th November 1850. The 1851 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with her extended family at 171 Tooley Street, Horsleydown. The 1861 census records that the school was living with her family at 31 Mill Street, Maidstone. Ellen married Charles Hodges at Waterloo on 11th September 1870; he was born at Reading in Berkshire in 1841. Charles and Ellen had six children – Charles (1870), Thomas (1873), Ellen (1876), William (1877), Ernest (1879) and Margaret (1882). The 1881 census records that Charles and Ellen were employed as dyers. They and their three surviving children were living at 41 Broad Street, Lambeth. The 1891 census records that Charles was a dyer and he and his wife and their four children were living at 21 Stafford Street, Peckham. Charles died before 1901. The 1901 census records that Ellen was working as an ironer and washer and she was living with her two unmarried children at 9 Shaw Road, Camberwell. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.1 ~~ Charles Hodges Charles was born at London soon after the 1871 census. He was baptised at St John's church, Walworth in Surrey on 24th September 1873. The 1881 census records that Charles was a school boy and he was living with his family at 41 Broad Street, Lambeth. The 1891 census records that Charles was a baker's labourer and he was living with his parents at 21 Stafford Street, Peckham. Charles married Etty Summers at All Saints' church, Newington in Surrey on 7th February 1892 (St Saviour 1892 March qtr Volume 1d Page 31). They had three children – Gladys (1894), John (1895) and Elsie. There is no trace of this family in the 1901 English census. Charles died at Camberwell after 1930. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.1.1 ~~ Gladys Ethel Hodges Gladys was born at south London in 1894 (St Saviour 1894 March qtr Volume 1d Page 159). 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.1.2 ~~ John Thomas Hodges John was born at Peckham in Surrey on 22nd October 1895 (Camberwell 1895 December qtr Volume 1d Page 874). He married Eliza Roullier at Camberwell on 14th June 1922 and they had four children. John died at Enfield in London on 17th December 1965 aged 70 years. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.1.3 ~~ Elsie Hodges Elsie was born at Peckham sometime after 1892. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.2 ~~ Thomas Hodges Thomas was born in south London in 1873 (St Saviour 1873 September qtr Volume 1d Page 142) and he was baptised at St John's church, Walworth on 24th September 1873. He died before 1881 as he is not recorded with the rest of his family in that year's census. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.3 ~~ Ellen Clara Hodges Ellen was born at south London in 1876 (St Saviour 1876 March qtr Volume 1d Page 104) and she was baptised at St John's church, Walworth on 6th February 1876. She died before 1881 as she is also not recorded with the rest of her family in that year's census. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.4 ~~ William Hodges William was born at Walworth in south London in 1877. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 41 Broad Street, Lambeth. The 1891 census records that William was an errand boy and he was living with his parents at 21 Stafford Street, Peckham. William married Florence Milner at Newington on 17th November 1895. Florence was born at Brixton on 27th November 1878 the daughter of John Milner and Harriett Mantell. William and Florence had two children – Ellen (1896) and William (1901). The 1901 census records that William was employed as a letterpress printer and Florence as a dyer's ironer. They and their young daughter were living at 29 Shaw Road, Camberwell. Florence would have been pregnant with their son William at the time. Florence died aged 70 years at Dulwich on 28th June 1949. William died at Beckenham, Kent on 31st January 1954 aged 76 years. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.4.1 ~~ Ellen Florence Hodges Ellen was born at Peckham on 16th February 1896. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 29 Shaw Road, Camberwell. Ellen married William Henry Lawrance at Nunhead, Surrey on 29th August 1921. William was born at City Road, London on 18th April 1895 the son of William James Lawrance and Mary Ann Potter. Ellen died at Worthing on 4th December 1977 aged 81 years. 1.3.12.2.10.7.1.3.4.2 ~~ William Charles Hodges William was born at Peckham on 6th August 1901. He married Florence Edith Elizabeth Botting at St Lawrence's church, Catford in 1929. Florence was born at Catford on 11th October 1903. William died at East Grinsted on 31st July 1974. Florence died in 1984. |
