Volume 4 – The Alchins of Linton by Steve Green Part 4 – Alchins of Linton, Kent; Montcalm, Michigan; and Dalton, NSW ...continued... 1.4.4.3.2.3 ~~ Thomas Fleet Staines Thomas was born at Barre, Orleans County, New York on 30th April 1839. There is no record of Thomas or his family in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that Thomas was still a bachelor and he was living on his parents farm (and no doubt assisting his father) at Barre. Thomas married Jane Janette Stafford in 1861; she was born in Ontario County, New York in March 1836 and it seems likely that she was his step-sister. There is a Jane Stafford aged 24 years who is recorded as the stepdaughter of Robert Staines in the 1860 census. Thomas and Jane had at least three children – Jennie (1863), Charles (1865) and Jay (1883). The two eldest were adopted and were the natural born children of Francis Knight and Thomas' younger sister Sarah. The 1870 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife and their two young children were still living at Barre. Thomas' brother Charles was living next door. The 1880 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife and two of their children were living at Barre, Orleans County. Also living with them was Thomas' step mother and brother and sister in law (Erastus and Hannah Stafford). The 1900 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife and two of their children were still living at Barre. The 1910 census also records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Barre. Jane died on 8th October 1918 aged 82 years and she was buried at Mount Albion cemetery, Albion, New York. The 1920 census records that Thomas was a widowed farmer and he and his two adopted children were living at Albion, Orleans County. Thomas died on 2nd February 1922 aged 82 years from acute bronchitis. He was buried with his wife and other family members at Mt Albion Cemetery on 5th February 1922. 1.4.4.3.3.3.1 ~~ Jennie S. (Knight) Staines Jennie was born in New York in July 1863. Her mother was not unmarried and Jennie was adopted by her uncle and aunt. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1880 census records that Jennie was still living with her parents and extended family at Barre in New York State. The 1900 and 1910 census both record that Jennie was a spinster and she was still living with her parents at Barre. The 1920 census records that Jennie was still a spinster and she was living with her widowed father at Albion, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that Jennie was living with her brother Jay at their home (valued at $3,000) at Albion. Jennie died on 6th October 1933 aged 70 years and she was buried at Mount Albion cemetery 1.4.4.3.3.3.2 ~~ Charles Francis (Knight) Staines Charles was born in New York on 18th April 1865. His mother was not unmarried and, like his elder sister Jennie, Charles was adopted by his uncle and aunt The 1870 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County.The 1880 census records that Charles was living with his parents and extended family at Barre, Orleans. Charles married Cora Estelle Sanford in 1888; she was born in New York on 10th January 1867 the daughter of Charles Sanford and Maria Dolley. Charles and Cora had at least seven children – Edna (1888), Urwin (1890), Ernest (1892), George (1894), Sarah (1896), Eva (1899) and Sanford (1902). The 1900 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Barre. The 1910 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife and their seven children were living at Barre. The 1920 census records that Charles was still a farmer and he and his wife and three of their children were living at Albion, Orleans County. Cora died on 16th June 1926 aged 59 years and she was buried at Mount Albion cemetery, Albion, New York. The 1930 census records that Charles was a widowed farmer and he and his two unmarried children were living at Albion. His 82 year old aunt Mary Holverson was also living with them. Charles died on 24th November 1939 aged 74 years and he was buried with his wife at Mount Albion cemetery.
1.4.4.3.3.3.2.1 ~~ Edna D Staines Edna was born in New York State on 5th September 1888. The 1900 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1910 census records that Edna was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Barre. Edna married Samuel Smout; he was born in England in 1892. Samuel and Edna had at least three children – Charles (1914), Ethan (1916) and Elizabeth (1919). The 1920 census records that Samuel was a clergyman and he and hi siwfe and their three children were living at Allegany, Cattaraugus County, New York. There si no surviving record of the family in the 1930 census. Edna died at Gowanda, Cattaraugus County in December 1983 aged 95 years. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.1.1 ~~ Charles O. Smout Charles was born in New York State in 1914. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Allegany, Cattaraugus County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.1.2 ~~ Ethan P. Smout Ethan was born in New York State on 5th September 1916. The 1920 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Allegany, Cattaraugus County. Ethan died at Hillsborough, Florida on 13th June 1984 aged 77 years. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.1.3 ~~ Elizabeth Smout Elizabeth was born in New York State in early 1919. The 1920 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Allegany, Cattaraugus County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2 ~~ Urwin Sanford Staines Urwin (spelt sometimes as Erwin) was born in New York State on 9th July 1890. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1910 census records that Urwin was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Barre. Urwin married Margaret Betzold in about 1913; she was born in New York in 1891 the daughter of Gottlieb Betzold. Urwin and Margaret had at least seven children including – Elmer (1914), Lois (1918), Esther (1921), Dorothy (1923), Urwin (1924) and Paul (1928). Urwin registered for the draft on 5th June 1917. He claimes exemption as he had a wife and young children. His draft form gives a rough physical description of him – short, stout, brown eyes and dark brown hair. The 1920 census records that Urwin was a farmer and he and his wife and their two young children were still living at Barre. The 1930 census records that Urwin was still a farmer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Albion. Urwin died on 15th September 1949 aged 59 years (see obituary below) and he was buried at Mount Albion cemetery. Margaret died on 27th April 1970 aged about 79 years and she was also buried at Mount Albion.
1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2.1 ~~ Elmer T. Staines Elmer was born in New York State on 6th May 1914. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County. Elmer died at Rochester, Monroe County in January 1972 aged 57 years. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2.2 ~~ Lois E. Staines Lois was born in New York State in 1918. The 1920 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County.The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Albion, Orleans County. Lois probably married Lynn Parsons; he was born on 20th October 1918 and he died at Albion on 12th February 1993 aged 74 years. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2.3 ~~ Esther Staines Esther was born in New York State in 1921. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Albion, Orleans County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2.4 ~~ Dorothy M. Staines Dorothy was born in New York State in 1923. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Albion, Orleans County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2.5 ~~ Urwin C. Staines Urwin was born in New York State in 1924. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.2.6 ~~ Paul L. Staines Paul was born in New York State in 1928. The 1930 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.3 ~~ Ernest T. Staines Ernest was born in New York State on 19th May 1892. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre. Ernest married Molly Schreffker in 1915; she was born in Pennsylvania in 1889. The couple do not appear to have had any surviving children. Ernest registered for the draft on 5th June 1918. He uis described of medium height and build, blue eyes and light hair. The 1920 census records that Ernest had no occupation at the time (was he trying to avoid the draft) and he and his wife were living at Greenville, Bond County, Illionis. The 1930 census records that Ernest was a High School teacher and he and his wife lived in their own home (valued at $7,000) at Chili, Monroe County. Ernest died at Churchville, Monroe County on 30th September 1966 aged 74 years. He is buried in Mount Albion cemetery. Molly died on 23rd October 1971 aged 82 years and she was buried with her husband at Mount Albion cemetery. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.4 ~~ George Staines George was born in New York State in May 1894. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre. The 1920 census records that George was an unmarried labourer and he was living with his parents at Albion, Orleans County. George married Elizabeth in 1922; she was born in Michigan in 1892. George and Elizabeth had at least three children – Edith (1923), Frances (1925) and Mary (1927). The 1930 census records that George was a carter (?) and he and his wife and their three children were living at Chili, Monroe County, New York in a house which he rented for $20 per month. George may have pre-deceased his elder brother Urwin who died in 1949. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.4.1 ~~ Edith E. Staines Edith was born in New York State in 1923. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Chili, Monroe County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.4.2 ~~ Frances G. Staines Frances was born in New York State in 1925. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Chili, Monroe County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.4.3 ~~ Mary Eleanor Staines Mary was born in New York State in 1927. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Chili, Monroe County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.5 ~~ Sarah Staines Sarah was born in New York State in October 1896. The 1900 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Barre. Sarah married Newton H. O'Brien; he was born in New York in 1899. Newton and Sarah had at least one child – Lloyd (1920). The 1920 census records that Newton was a dairy farmer and he and his wife and their infant son were living at East Otto, Cattaraugus County. In 1949 Newton and Sarah were living at North Chili in Monroe County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.5.1 ~~ Lloyd Urwin O'Brien Lloyd was born in New York State in 1920. The 1920 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with his family at East Otto, Cattaraugus County. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.6 ~~ Evalina Staines Evalina (Eva) was born in New York State in November 1899. The 1900 census records that the infant was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Barre. The 1920 census records that Eva was living with her parents at Albion, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that Eva was unmarried and she was living with her widowed father at Albion. Eva may have married Mark Houghton. 1.4.4.3.3.3.2.7 ~~ Sanford K. Staines Sanford was born in New York State in 1902. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Barre. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that Sanford was an unmarried farmer and he was living with his widowed father at Albion. Sanford married Florence Irene Snow; she was born in 1897 the daughter of Frank Snow and Bertha Blanchard. Sanford died on 2nd April 1983 aged 81 years and he was buried at Mount Albion cemetery. Florence died on 11th January 1986 aged 89 years and she was buried with her husband at Mount Albion cemetery. 1.4.4.3.3.3.3 ~~ Jay William Staines Jay was born in New York State (probably at Barre) on 6th March 1883. However in 1883 Jane Staines would have been 47 years old and she had had no living children previously. It seems possible that Jay may have been the natural son of Jennie or else adopted. Jay never married. The 1900 and 1910 census records that Jay was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Barre, Orleans County. Jay registered for the draft on 12th September 1918 but it seems unlikely that he would have been called up at his age. The 1920 census records that Jay was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his widowed father at Albion, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that Jay was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his sister at Albion Jay died in Michigan in February 1965 aged 81 years. 1.4.4.3.2.4 ~~ Charles A. Staines Charles was born in New York State in 1841. There is no record of Charles or his family in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that Charles was still a bachelor and he was living on his parents farm (and no doubt assisting his father) at Barre, Orleans County. Charles married Mary Knight; she was born at Clarendon County, New York on 5th January 1843. Charles and Mary had at least one child – Sarah (1862). The 1870 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife and their daughter were living at Barre. The 1880 census records that Charles was a cooper and he and his wife and their daughter were living at Sweden, Monroe County, New York. They also had a couple of Charles' workers living with them. Charles died of typhoid fever at Sweden on 3rd September 1880 aged 39 years. He is buried in the Love Cemetery, Mathes Road, Barre. 1.4.4.3.2.4.1 ~~ Sarah Staines Sarah was born in New York State in 1862. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County. The 1880 census records that Sarah was living with her family at Sweden, Monroe County. 1.4.4.3.2.5 ~~ Sarah A. Staines Sarah was born in New York State in 1842. The 1860 census records that Sarah was living with her parents at Barre, Orleans County. Sarah had two natural born children to Francis H. Knight – Jennie (1863) and Charles (1865) – see under her brother Thomas Fleet Staines for details of her children and their descendants. Sarah later married Frank Knight. 1.4.4.3.2.6 ~~ Mary Jane Staines Mary was born in New York State in 1845. The 1860 census records that Mary (here recorded as Jane) was living with her parents at Barre, Orleans County. Mary died, probably at Barre, on 28th January 1862 aged 17 years. She is buried in the Love Cemetery, Mathes Road, Barre. 1.4.4.3.2.7 ~~ William Henry Staines William, more usually known as Henry, was born in New York State on 15th September 1847. There is no record of the young boy in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that the young boy (here recorded as Henry) was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. William married Selena E. Youngs in 1870; she was born in England in July 1849 and she emigrated to the United States in 1857. William and Selena had at least three children – Cora (1872), Charles (1874) and Pearl (1889). William moved his family to Michigan in the late 1870's. The 1880 census records that William (listed again as Henry) was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1900 census records that Henry was a day labourer and he and his wife and their youngest daughter were back in New York State and living at Barre. The 1910 census rercords that Henry was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Murray, Orleans County. The 1920 census records that Henry was retired and he and his wife were living alone at Albion, Orleans County. Selena died on 4th November 1921and she was buried at Mount Albion cemetery, Albion, New York. William died at Albion, Orleans County on 23rd November 1922 aged 75 years. He is buried with his wife in the Mount Albion cemetery. 1.4.4.3.2.7.1 ~~ Cora E. Staines Cora was probably born in New York State in 1872. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County in Michigan. Cora was still alive in 1900. 1.4.4.3.2.7.2 ~~ Charles H. Staines Charles was probably born in New York State on 8th March 1874. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County in Michigan. Charles was not living with his parents at the time of the 1900 census and it seems certain that he remained in Michigan when his parents returned to New York. Charles married his first cousin Lottie E. Haysmer at Montcalm County on 20th November 1901. She was born in Michigan on 27th December 1877 the daughter of James Haysmer and Anna Maria Staines. The 1910 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Bushnell. The 1920 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife were still living at Bushnell. The couple had no surviving children. The 1930 census records that Charles was a farmer and he and his wife were still lving on their farm at Bushnell. Charles and Lottie both died in 1961. Charles was aged about 87 years and Lottie was aged about 83 years. The couple are buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County. 1.4.4.3.2.7.3 ~~ Pearl Staines Pearl was probably born in New York State in June 1889. The 1900 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Barre, Orleans County. Pearl was still alive in 1910. 1.4.4.3.2.8 ~~ George F. Staines George was born in New York State on 23rd December 1849. There is no record of the infant in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. There is no surviving record of George in the 1870 census – the George Staines at Bushnell was in fact his cousin John Staines. George moved to Michigan sometime before 1875. George married Amelia J. Hall in Michigan on 11th April 1875; she was born in Pennsylvania in 1858. George and Amelia had at least one child – Ora (1876). The 1880 census records that George was a farmer and he and his wife and their young son were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County. George died on 9th October 1891 aged 41 years and he is buried in the Sunnyhill cemetery, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that Amelia was widowed and she was living with her son Ora and his family at Davidson County, Tennessee. 1.4.4.3.2.8.1 ~~ Ora Robert Staines Ora was born in Michigan on 12th March 1876. The 1880 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Ora married Maisie Woodcock in 1907; she was born in Wisconsin in 1880 the daughter of Joseph Woodcock. Ora and Maisie had at least one child – Ward (1908). The 1910 census records that Ora was a business manager at an industrial school and he and his wife, their infant son and his widowed mother were living at Davidson County, Tennessee. The 1930 census records that Ora was a clergy man and he and his wife and her widowed father were living in their own house (valued at $5,000) at San Berbadino, California. Ora died at San Bernadino on 12th August 1958 aged 82 years. 1.4.4.3.2.8.1.1 ~~ Ward C. Staines Ward was born in Tennessee in 1908. The 1910 census records that the toddler was living with his family at Davidson County. |
