1.4.4.3.2.9  ~~  John Edward Staines

John was born at Barre, Orleans County, New York on 27th January 1852. His mother died two months later. The 1860 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. John moved to Michigan some time in the 1860's.

John married Emmarilla (Emma) C. Gilliland in 1877; she was born in Stubenville, Ohio in September 1859. John and Emma had at least five children – Myrle (1879), Guy (1881), Gertrude (1883), Nelson (1889) and Nellie (1891).

The 1880 census records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living at Orleans, Ionia County, Michigan. The 1900 census records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and four of their children were living at Albion, Orleans County, New York.

The 1910 census records that John was a farmer and he and his housekeeper ((Julia H. Budd aged 51 years) were living at Albion. There is no sign of his wife Emma. John died from heart valve failure at his son's house at Gaines, Childs County, New York on 2nd April 1912 aged 60 years. He was buried in Mount Albion cemetery on 5th April 1912.

1.4.4.3.2.9.1  ~~  Myrle Olive Staines

Myrle was born at Bushnell, Montcalm County, Michigan in June 1879. The 1880 census records that the 11 month old infant was living with her family at Orleans, Ionia County, Michigan. The 1900 census records that Myrtle was a school teacher and she was living with her parents at Albion, Orleans County, New York.

1.4.4.3.2.9.2  ~~  Guy Garfield Staines

Guy was born at Orleans, Ionia County, Michigan on 17th June 1881. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County, New York. Guy married Mabel Appleton in 1908; she was born in New York State in January 1886.

Guy and Mabel had at least four children – Ralph (1908), Mildred (1912), Luella (1914) and Merwin (1923). The 1910 census records that Guy was a street car conductor and he and his wife and their young son were living at Rochester, Monroe County. The 1920 census records that Guy was a cooper and he and his wife and their three children were living at Albion, Orleans County.

The 1930 census records that Guy was a clerk and he and his wife and their four children were living in a house they rented for $50 per month at North Tanawanda, Niagara County. Guy died in September 1963 aged 82 years. Mabel died in August 1982 aged 96 years.

1.4.4.3.2.9.2.1  ~~  Ralph Appleton Staines

Ralph was born in New York State on 8th March 1908. The 1910 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Rochester, Monroe County. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County.

The 1930 census records that Ralph was an unmarried bus driver and he was living with his parents at North Tanawanda, Niagara County. Ralph married Ruth Moyer; she was born in 1909. Ralph and Ruth had at least one child – Richard (1945-1951).

Ruth died in 1959 aged 50 years. Ralph died on 7th January 1977 aged 68 years.

1.4.4.3.2.9.2.2  ~~  Mildred Staines

Mildred was born in New York State in 1912. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Albion, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that Mildred was a stenographer and she was living with her parents at North Tanawanda, Niagara County.

1.4.4.3.2.9.2.3  ~~  Luella D. Staines

Luella was born in New York State in 1914. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Albion, Orleans County. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at North Tanawanda, Niagara County.

1.4.4.3.2.9.2.4  ~~  Merwin R. Staines

Merwin was born in New York State in 1923. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at North Tanawanda, Niagara County.

1.4.4.3.2.9.3  ~~  Gertrude Amelia Staines

Gertrude was born at Orleans, Ionia County, Michigan in August 1883. The 1900 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Albion, Orleans County, New York.

1.4.4.3.2.9.4  ~~  Nelson Ellsworth Staines

Nelson was born at Beldon, Ionia County, Michigan on 15th September 1889. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Albion, Orleans County, New York. Nelson was exempted from the draft in 1917. He was unemployed and he was living at 58 Grand Avenue, Battle Creek, Michigan. He is variously described on his draft card as "mentally defective" and "mentally deranged".

Nelson does not appear in any census after 1900 and it may be that he was committed into an institution.

1.4.4.3.2.9.5  ~~  Nellie Sara Staines

Nellie was born at Albion, New York in March 1891. Nellie died before 1900.

1.4.4.3.3  ~~  Jane Alchin

Jane was born at Staplehurst on 6th October 1816 and she was baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst (below) on 24th November 1816. She emigrated to the United States with her family in about 1830. Jane married William Charles Staines in New York on 31st October 1833; he was born in England on 12th February 1813 the son of William Henry Staines and Hannah Fleet. He was therefore the younger brother of William Staines who married Jane's elder sister Sarah..

William and Jane had at least eight children – William (1834), Lucy (1837), Rebecca (1839), John (1841), Stephen (1844), Sally (1846), Orange (1847) and Edward (1853). There were possibly two other children about whom nothing is known – Robert and Mary.

The 1860 census records that William was a farmer with real estate valued at $2,334 and personal assets at $1,158. He and his wife and five of their children were living at Barre, Orleans County. Both William and Jane, and William's brother Robert who lived next door, give their place of birth as "Old England".

There is no surviving record of Robert or his wife in the 1870 census and it is unknown when they moved west to Michigan. However it was probably in the 1860's as most of their children are recorded in Michigan in the 1870 census. The 1880 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Ronald, Ionia County, Michigan. Their youngest son Edward and his family were living nearby.

Jane died at Woodard Lake, Michigan on 5th February 1894 aged 77 years. William died at Woodard Lake on 15th April 1896 aged 83 years.

1.4.4.3.3.1  ~~  William Charles Staines

William was born in New York State on 11th October 1834. Like other member of his family William is not recorded in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that William was still a bachelor and he was living on his parents farm (and no doubt assisting his father) at Barre. William moved west to Michigan before 1863.

William married Sarah A. Hammant in New York; she was born in Lincolnshire, England on 16th May 1840. William and Sarah had at least four children – William (1863), John (1866), Emma (1870) and Clarissa (1871). The 1870 census records that William was a farmer with real estate valued at $2,00 and personal assets worth $500. He and his wife and their three children were living near his extended family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. There is a 14 year old James Staines of Michigan living with them – perhaps he was actually Sarah's natural son.

Sarah died in 1873 aged only 33 years and she is buried in Fairplain cemetery in Montcalm County. William subsequently married Cynthia Anna Bennett at Ionia County, Michigan on 12th February 1878; she was born in England in February 1843. The 1880 census records that William was a farmer and he and his second wife and four of his children from his first marriage were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

The 1900 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife and her niece (Martha Bennett) and nephew (Charles Bennett) were living at Bushnell. William died in Michigan in 1907 aged 72 years and he was buried in Clearlake Cemetery on 17th September 1907. The couple had no children. The 1910 census recorded Cynthia twice – firstly with her brother Joseph Bennett at Sidney, Montcalm County and secondly with her niece Cora Hoy at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.3.1.1  ~~  William James Staines

William was born at Bushnell, Montcalm County, Michigan on 17th December 1863. The 1870 census records that the school boy (William) was living with his family at Bushnell. The 1880 census records that William (James) was living with his parents at Bushnell.

William married Nellie in 1885; she was born in Michigan in May 1866. William and Nellie had only one child – Glenn (1886). The 1900 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife and their son were living at Fairplain, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife were living alone at Fairplain.

The 1920 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Fairplain with their hired labourer Glenn Marrier (was this actually their son) and his wife Imogen. William died in the 1920's. The 1930 census records that Nellie was widowed and she was living with her son at Highland Park, Wayne County.

1.4.4.3.3.1.1.1  ~~  Glenn Staines

Glenn was born at Fenwick, Michigan on 15th November 1886. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Glenn does not appear in the 1910 and 1920 census. He sought exemption from the draft in 1917 claiming that he was running his own business. At the time he was a druggist running his own shop at 34 West Ferry, Detroit.

The 1930 census records that Glenn was an unmarried pharmacist and he was living with his widowed mother at Highland Park, Wayne County.

1.4.4.3.3.1.2  ~~  John Frederick Staines

John was born in Michigan in April 1866. The 1870 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that John was living (and probably labouring for his father) with his parents on their farm at Bushnell.

The 1900 census records that John was an unmarried farm labourer and he was boarding with James and Isadora Baker at Fairplain, Montcalm County. John married Vina in 1909; she was born in Michigan in 1883. The 1910 census records that John was a farm labourer and he and his wife were living alone at Eureka, Montcalm County.

John and Vina had at least one child – William (1912). The 1920 census records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and their son were living at Hinton, Mecosta County. John died in 1922 aged 56 years. Vina died in 1936 aged 53 years.

1.4.4.3.3.1.2.1  ~~  William Charles Staines

William was born in Michigan on 26th November 1912. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Hinton, Mecosta County. William served in the US Army during World War II. William died at St Johns, Clinton County on 7th March 1991 aged 78 years.

1.4.4.3.3.1.3  ~~  Emma Jane Staines

Emma was born in Michigan in June 1870. The 1870 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.3.1.4  ~~  Clarissa E. Staines

Clarissa was born in Michigan in 1871. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2  ~~  Lucy Ellen Staines

Lucy was born in New York State on 26th December 1837. There is no sign of Lucy or her family in the 1850 census. Lucy may have gone west to Michigan with her grandfather or perhaps gone to visit him there a bit later.

Lucy married Robert Thomas in Montcalm County, Michigan in 1857; he was born in England in 1832 but was living at Michigan at the time of his marriage (he may have been Sarah's cousin, the son of Robert Thomas and Sara-Sophia Alchin of Frittenden). Robert and Lucy had at least seven children – William (1858), Ida (1861), Charlie (1863), Fred (1866), Frank (1868), Smith (1874) and George (1876).

The 1860 census records that Robert was a farmer with real estate valued at only $300 and personal assets worth $75. He and his wife (their son William had died a few months earlier) were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County near he and his wife's extended family. Robert served with the Engineers on the Union side during the American Civil War.

The 1870 census records that Robert was a farmer and he and his wife and their four children were still living at Bushnell. His farm had greatly expanded in size and his real estate was now valued at $2,800 and his personal asets were worth $600.

Robert died at Buried Snow Lakes on 25th April 1880 aged about 48 years. He was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County. The 1800 census records that Lucy was widowed and managing the family farm. She and her five surviving children were atill living in the family enclave at Bushnell.

The 1900 census records that Lucy was widowed and she and her son George were living at Bushnell between her son Fred Thomas and her brother John Staines. At the time five of her seven children were still alive. The 1910 census records that Lucy was living with her daughter and son in law at Bushnell.

Lucy died shortly afterwards at Buried Snow Lake on 15th July 1910 aged 72 years. She was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.1  ~~  William Thomas

William was born in Michigan on 11th June 1858. He died at Bushnell on 17th January 1860 aged about 18 months. William is buried in Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.2  ~~  Ida Jane Thomas

Ida was born in Michigan on 16th January 1861. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that Ida was living with her widowed mother at Bushnell. Ida married David P. Deniston later that year; he was born in Michigan in 1856. The couple had no children.

The 1910 census records that David was a farmer and he and his wife and his mother in law were living at Bushnell. David died in 1921 aged 65 years. Ida died on 3rd October 1929 aged 68 years. They are both buried in Sunnyhill cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3  ~~  Charlie Thomas

Charlie was born in Michigan in May, 1863. The 1870 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that Charlie was helping his widowed mother to run their farm at Bushnell.

Charlie married Alvena (Vic) E in 1884; she was born in Ohio in June 1861. Charlie and Victoria had at least seven children – Elva (1885), Olive (1887), Dwight (1891), Lucy (1893), Frances (1895), Ida (1897) and Robert (1901).

The 1900 census records that Charlie was a farmer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Bushnell amongst a vast number of relatives. The 1910 census records that Charlie was still a farmer and he and his wife and their six children were living on their farm at Bushnell.

Vic died in 1919 aged about 58 years. The 1920 census records that Charlie was a widowed farmer and he and his five unmarried children were living at Bushnell. The 1930 census records that Charlie was a widowed farmer and he and his three spinster daughters were still living at Bushnell.

Charlie died in 1955 aged about 92 years. The couple are buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3.1  ~~  Elva E. Thomas

Elva was born in Michigan in May 1885. The 1900 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that Elva was an unmarried teacher and she was living with her parents at Bushnell.

The 1920 census records that Elva was a spinster was living with her widowed father at Bushnell. The 1930 census records that Elva was an unmarried nurse and she was living with her widowed father at Bushnell.

Elva died in 1961 aged about 76 years and she is buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3.2  ~~  Olive Thomas

Olive was born in Michigan in January 1887. The 1900 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Olive was still alive in 1910 but she was not living with her parents at the time.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3.3  ~~  Dwight S. Thomas

Dwight was born in Michigan on 22nd January 1891. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that Dwight was a labourer and he was living with his parents at Bushnell.

Dwight married Parmilla L.; she was born in Michigan in 1896. Dwight and Parmilla had at least three children – Vivian (1921), Alvina (1923) and Charles (1928). The 1930 census records that Dwight was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Bushnell.

Dwight died at Sheridan, Montcalm County in March 1969 aged 78 years.

Vivian was born in Michigan in 1921. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Alvina was born in Michigan in 1923. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3.3.3  ~~  Charles D. Thomas

Charles was born in Michigan in 1928. The 1930 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell.

Frances was born in Michigan in November 1895. The 1900 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell.

The 1920 census records that Frances was unmarried and she was living with her widowed father at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3.6  ~~  Ida B. Thomas

Ida was born in Michigan in April 1897. The 1900 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell. The 1920 census records that Ida was unmarried and she was still living with her widowed father at Bushnell.

The 1930 census records that Ida was still a spinster and she was living with her widowed father at Bushnell. Ida died in 1954 aged about 57 years and she is buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.3.7  ~~  Robert W. Thomas

Robert was born in Michigan in 1901. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell. The 1920 census records that Robert was an unmarried labourer and he was living with his widowed father at Bushnell.

Robert married Carol in 1923; she was born in Michigan in 1905. The 1930 census records that Robert was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Bushnell. The couple had no children at that stage.

1.4.4.3.3.2.4  ~~  Fred Thomas

Fred was born in Michigan on 28th March 1866. The 1870 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Fred married Luella M. in 1895; she was born in Michigan on 14th October 1877. Fred and Luella had at least three children – David (1896), Alice (1899) and Pearl (1909). The 1900 census records that Fred was a farmer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Bushnell.

The 1910 census records that Fred was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Chapin, Saginaw County. The 1920 census records that Fred was a farmer and he and his wife and two of their children were still living at Chapin.

Fred died on 25th June 1921 aged 55 years. He is buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County. Luella is buried with her husband although it is not certain when she died.

1.4.4.3.3.2.4.1  ~~  David Orange Thomas

David was born in Michigan on 18th February 1896. The 1900 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Chapin, Saginaw County. David registered for the draft on 5th June 1917 but he did not claim exemption. He is described as of medium height, mediumn build, grey eyes and brown hair.

The 1920 census records that David was an unmarried farm labourer and he was still living with his parents on their farm at Chapin. David married Minnie A. late in 1920; she was born in Michigan in 1899. The 1930 census records that David was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Chapin, Saginaw County. The couple had no children.

1.4.4.3.3.2.4.2  ~~  Alice M. Thomas

Alice was born in Michigan in October 1899. The 1900 census records that the infant was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Chapin, Saginaw County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.4.3  ~~  Pearl Thomas

Pearl was born in Michigan in late 1909. The 1910 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at Chapin, Saginaw County. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Chapin.

1.4.4.3.3.2.5  ~~  Frank Thomas

Frank was born in Michigan on 11th December 1868. The 1870 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Frank died on 23rd December 1873 aged 5 years.

1.4.4.3.3.2.6  ~~  Smith Thomas

Smith was born in Michigan on 29th January 1874. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Smith married Alice in 1896; she was born in Michigan in 1878. Smith and Alice had at least two children – Ray (1902) and Ralph (1907).

The 1910 census records that Smith was a farmer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Bushnell. The 1920 census records that Smith was still a farmer and he and his wife and their two children were living on their farm at Bushnell.

The 1930 census records that Smith was still a farmer and he and his wife and their unmarried son were living at Fairplain, Montcalm County. Smith died on 22nd September 1931 aged 57 years. He is buried in Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.6.1  ~~  Ray P. Thomas

Ray was born in Michigan in 1903. The 1910 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1920 census records that Ray was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents on their farm at Bushnell.

Ray married Elva or Iva in 1822; she was born in Michigan in 1906. Ray and Elva had at least four children – Leone (1923), Helen (1925), Jean (1927) and Tanyann (1929). The 1930 census records that Ray was a garage mechanic and he and his wife and their four children were living in a house they rented for $10 per month at Ronald, Ionia County.

Leone was born in Michigan in 1923. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Ronald, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.6.1.2  ~~  Helen Thomas

Helen was born in Michigan in 1925. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Ronald, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.6.1.3  ~~  Jean Thomas

Jean was born in Michigan in 1927. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Ronald, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.6.1.4  ~~  Tanyann Thomas

Tanyann was born in Michigan in 1929. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Ronald, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.6.2  ~~  Ralph A. Thomas

Ralph was born in Michigan in 1907. The 1910 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell.

The 1930 census records that Ralph was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his parents on their farm at Fairplain, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.2.7  ~~  George Thomas

George was born in Michigan on 6th September 1876. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1900 census records that George was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at Bushnell.

George died on 28th February 1937 aged 60 years.
