1.4.4.3.3.3  ~~  Rebecca Staines

Rebecca was born in New York State on 15th July 1839. There is no sign of Rebecca or her family in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that Rebecca was unmarried and she was living with her parent s at Barre, Orleans County. Rebecca moved to Michigan at some time early in the 1860's.

Rebecca married James Sharp; he was born in England in October 1838. James and Rebecca had at least six children – Mary (1862), Daisy (1868), Stephen (1870), Reuben (1871), Rose (1873) and Myrtle (1880). They may have had a seventh child – Ruby.

The 1870 census records that James was a farmer and he and his wife and their three young children were living in the family enclave at Bushnell, Montcalm County. James had real estate valued at $1,000 and personal assets worth $400.

The 1880 census records that James was a farmer and he and his wife and five of their children were living in the family enclave at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1900 census records that James was a farmer and he and his wife and their two grandsons (Lloyd and Harley Blake) were living at Evergreen, Montcalm County. By that time only two out of their seven children were still alive.

Rebecca died on 20th June 1906.

Mary was born in Michigan in 1862. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that Mary was living with her parents at Bushnell.

Daisy was born in Michigan in 1868. The 1870 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Stephen was born in Michigan in 1870. The 1870 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.3.4  ~~  Reuben S. Sharp

Reuben was born in Michigan in 1871. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.3.5  ~~  Rose Sharp

Rose was born in Michigan in 1873. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.3.6  ~~  Myrtle Sharp

Myrtle was born in Michigan in 1880. The 1880 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.4  ~~  John T. Staines

John was born in Albion, New York on 12th January 1841. There is no sign of John or his family in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that John was still a bachelor and he was living on his parents farm (and no doubt assisting his father) at Barre. It is not known if John served in the American Civil War but it seems likely that he would have as the Union had conscription.

John married Susanna Haysmer in July 1864. Susanna was born in England on 9th September 1843 and she was the daughter of Edward Haysmer and Rachel Talhurst (and the niece of James Haysmer who married Ann Maria Staines as well as the sister of Elizabeth Haysmer who married John's younger brother Stephen Staines).

John and Susanna had at least four children – Orange (1866), Carrie (1867), Harvey (1878) and Bert (1882). The 1870 census records that John (incorrectly recorded as George) was a farmer with real estate valued at $2,000 and personal assets worth $400. John and his wife and their two young children were living in the family enclave at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

The 1880 records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County, Michigan. There must have been an epidemic that began in late September 1881 as the couple lost two of their sons in 10 days.

The 1900 census records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and their youngest son were living at Bushnell. Susanna died on 11th January 1910 aged 66 years. The 1910 census records that John was a widowed farmer and he and his daughter and his son and his family were living at Bushnell.

John died in 1918 aged about 77 years. John  and Susanna are both buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.4.1  ~~  Orange C. Staines

Orange was born in Michigan on 24th September 1866. The 1870 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Orange died on 24th September 1881 aged 15 years and he is buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.4.2  ~~  Carrie Staines

Carrie was born in Michigan on 11th November 1867. The 1870 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

The 1910 census records that Carrie was unmarried and she was living with her father at Bushnell. Her occupation is given as 'sanitorium' – she was probably either a nurse or an inmate. Carrie probably never married. Carrie died at Bushnell on 14th December 1948 aged 81 years and she was buried in Sunnyhill cemetery.

1.4.4.3.3.4.3  ~~  Harvey A. Staines

Harvey was born in Michigan on 31st October 1878. The 1880 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Harvey died at Bushnell on 3rd October 1881 aged almost 3 years and he was buried at Sunnyhill cemetery.

1.4.4.3.3.4.4  ~~  Bert E. Staines

Bert was born in Michigan in February 1882. The 1900 census records that Bert was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents on their farm at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Bert married Winnie E. in 1904; she was born in Michigan in 1880. Bert and Winnie had at least two children – Alberta (1906) and Harvey (1911).

The 1910 census records that Bert was a farmer and he and his wife and their daughter were living with his widowed father at Bushnell. The 1920 census records that Bert was a farmer and he and his wife and their two children were still living at Bushnell.

The 1930 census records that Bert had no occupation and he and his wife, their son, niece and his sister in law were living at Ionia, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.4.4.1  ~~  Alberta B. Staines

Alberta was born in Michigan in 1906. The 1910 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.3.4.4.2  ~~  Harvey G. Stains

Harvey was born in Michigan on 6th May 1911. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1930 census records that Harvey was unmarried and he had no occupation. He was living with his parents at Ionia, Ionia County.

Harvey later lived at Johnstown, Barry County. He died on 30th January 1995 aged 83 years at Battle Creek, Calhoun County.

1.4.4.3.3.5  ~~  Stephen A. Staines

Stephen was born at Barre, Orleans County, New York on 15th October 1844. There is no sign of the young boy or his family in the 1850 census. The 1860 census records that Stephen was living on his parents farm (and no doubt assisting his father) at Barre. It is not known if Stephen served in the American Civil War but it seems likely that he would have as the Union had conscription.

Stephen married Elizabeth Haysmer at Ronald, Ionia County, Michigan on 14th October 1866; she was born in England on 29th September 1847 the daughter of Edward Haysmer and Rachel Talhurst. Stephen and Elizabeth has at least five children – Cora (1867), Julia (1870), Perry (1872), Franklin (1873) and Norman (1877).

The 1870 census records that Stephen was a farmer with real estate valued at $500 and personal assets worth $100. He and his wife (recorded as Melissa) and their young daughter were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

The 1880 census records that Stephen was a farmer and he and his wife and their five children were still living at Bushnell. The 1900 census records that Stephen was a farmer and he and his wife and their 15 year old niece Mabel Staines were living at Bushnell (between the properties of his son Perry Staines and his cousin Charlie Thomas).

Sarah died in the early 1900s. The 1910 census records that Stephen was widowed and retired and he was living alone at Bushnell. Stephen died at Pompeii (?) on 13th October 1919 aged almost 76 years. He is buried in the Sunnyhill cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.1  ~~  Cora Elizabeth Staines

Cora was born in Michigan on 5th January 1867. The 1870 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1880 census records that the school girl was still living with her family at Bushnell.

Cora may have married a man surnamed Calkin in the late 1880's. The couple had at least one child – Rex (1890). After her first husband's death Cora subsequently married Walter L. Hoy in about 1893; he was born in Indiana in 1857. Cora and Walter had at least five children – Elmer (1894), Elsie (1897), Richard (1900), Elizabeth (1905) and Glenn (1910).

The 1910 census records that Walter was a farmer and he and his wife, their five children and Cora's widowed aunt (Cynthia Staines widow of John Staines) were living on their farm at Bushnell. Their neighbours were all relatives – various Haysmer, Eitelbuss, Thomas, Staines and Alchin families.

The 1920 census records that Walter was a farmer and he and his wife and four of their children were still living at Bushnell. The 1930 census records that Walter was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Bushnell.

Cora died at Bushnell on 23rd November 1937 aged 70 years and she was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County. Walter also died in 1937 aged 80 years and he is buried with his wife.

1.4.4.3.3.5.1.1  ~~  Rex P. Calkin

Rex was born in Michigan in 1890. The 1910 census records that Rex was an unmarried labourer and he was living with his mother and step-father at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1920 census records that Rex was an unmarried farm labourer and he was still living with his mother and step-father at Bushnell.

Rex married Florence M. Doane in 1921; she was born in Michigan in 1901 and she was the daughter of Lester Doane. Rex and Florence had at least four children – Maude (1922), Norma (1924), Kathleen (1927) and Carrie (1929).

The 1930 census records that Rex was a finisher in a autobody factory and he and his wife and their four children were living at Fairplain, Montcalm County. Arvilla's widowed father (a farmer) was also living with them.

Maude was born in Michigan in 1922. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Fairplain, Montcalm County.

Norma was born in Michigan in 1924. The 1930 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Fairplain, Montcalm County.

Elmer was born in Michigan in 1894. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1920 census records that Elmer was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Bushnell.

Elsie was born in Michigan in 1897. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Richard was born in Michigan in 1900. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Elizabeth, known also as Beta, was born in Michigan in 1905. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.  The 1920 census records that the school girl was still living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Glenn was born in Michigan in early 1910. The 1910 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.2  ~~  Julia Staines

Julia was born in Michigan in 1870. The 1880 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3  ~~  Perry D. Staines

Perry was born in Michigan on 26th May 1872. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Perry married Lida A. in 1893; she was born in Michigan on 6th November 1872. Perry amd Lida had at least six children – Lorenzo (1894), Nellie (1896), Don (1900), Aleen (1901), Ormond (1904) and Kenneth (1913).

The 1900 census records that Perry was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living on his parent's farm at Bushnell. The 1910 census records that Perry was a farmer and he and his wife and their four surviving children were living at Bushnell.

The 1920 census records that Perry was a farmer and he and his wife and their four children were still living at Bushnell. Lida died on 2nd December 1921 aged 49 years. The 1930 census records that Perry was a widowed farmer and he and his youngest son were living at Bushnell.

Perry died at Bushnell on 12th July 1948 aged 75 years. The couple are buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3.1  ~~  Lorenzo S. Staines

Lorenzo was born in Michigan in February 1894. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell.

The 1920 census records that Lorenzo was an unmarried school teacher and he was living with his parents at Bushnell. Lorenzo (Len) married Wilma C. in 1925; she was born in Michigan in 1907. The 1930 census records that Len was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Bushnell. They had no children at that stage.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3.2  ~~  Nellie B. Staines

Nellie was born in Michigan in August 1896. The 1900 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3.3  ~~  Don Perry Staines

Don was born at Fenwick, Michigan on 3rd April 1900. The 1900 census records that the infant boy was living with his family on their farm at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell.

Don registered for the draft on 12th September 1918 and did not seek exemption from service. His description is given as medium height and build, dark blue eyes and brown hair. The 1920 census records that Don was a farm labourer and he was still living with his parents at Bushnell.

Don married Erna in 1923; she was born in Michigan in 1904. Don and Erna had at least three children – Austin (1925), Eugen (1927) and Orman (1929). The 1930 census records that Don was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Bushnell.

Austin was born in Michigan in 1929. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3.3.2  ~~  Eugen Staines

Eugen was born in Michigan in 1927. The 1930 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

Orman was born in Michigan in 1929. The 1930 census records that the infant boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3.4  ~~  Aleen E. Staines

Aleen was born in Michigan on 29th November 1901. She died on 5th May 1902 aged about 6 months and she was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.3.5  ~~  Ormond W. Staines

Ormond was born in Michigan on 19th November 1904. The 1910 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell.

Ormond died on 27th March 1923 aged only 18 years and he was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

Kenneth was born in Michigan in 1913. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1930 census records that Kenneth was a farm labourer and he was living with his widowed father at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.3.5.4  ~~  Franklin Staines

Franklin was born in Michigan in 1877. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.5.5  ~~  Norman F. Staines

Norman was born in Michigan in 1877. The 1880 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Bushnell, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.3.6  ~~  Sally Staines

Sally was born in New York State in 1846. Sally is not recorded in either thr 1850 or 1860 census.

1.4.4.3.3.7  ~~  Orange Staines

Orange was born at Barre, Orleans County, New York on 1st November 1847. Orange died at Barre on 27th September 1848 aged 11 months.

1.4.4.3.3.8  ~~  Edward Increase Staines

Edward was born in New York State on 27th October 1853. The 1860 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Barre, Orleans County. Edward moved west to Michigan some time between 1860 and 1875. There is no record of him in the 1870 census.

Edward married Margaret Celinda Hall at Greenville, Montcalm County, Michigan on 4th September 1875; she was born in Michigan on 19th May 1856. Edward and Margaret had at least five children – Edna (1876), Ida (1879), Merle (1883), Roy (1885) and William (1888).

The 1880 census records that Edward was a farmer and he and his wife and their two young daughters were living at Ronald, Ionia County. The 1900 census records that Edward was a farmer and he and his wife and four of their children were living at Ronald, Ionia County.

The 1910 census records that Edward had no occupation and he and his wife and their two children were living at Houlton, Columbia County in Oregon. All five of their children were still alive at the time of the 1910 census. Margaret died between 1910 and 1930.

The 1930 census records that Edward was a widower and he was living with the family of his married daughter Edna Stevens at Yankton, Columbia County. Edward died at Yankton on 29th October 1930 aged 77 years.

1.4.4.3.3.8.1  ~~  Edna Jane Staines

Edna was born at Palo, Ionia County on 21st November 1876. The 1880 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. Edna married Winfield Stevens in 1898; he was born in Michigan in 1862. Winfield and Edna had at least eight children – Mildred (1901), Myrtle (1903), Muriel (1906), twins Mae and Marie (1907), Minnie (1912), Millard (1914) and Merle (1918).

Winfield moved his family west to Oregon in about 1902. The 1910 census records that Winfield was a bee keeper and he and his wife and their five young daughters were living at Union, Columbia County. The 1920 census records that Winfield was a farmer and he and his wife and six of their children were living at St Helens, Columbia County.

The 1930 census records that Winfield was still a farmer and he and his wife, three of their children and his wife's elderly father were living at Yankton, Columbia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.1.1  ~~  Mildred Stevens

Mildred was born in Michigan in 1901. She moved west to Oregon with her family while she was still a baby. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Union, Columbia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.1.2  ~~  Myrtle Stevens

Myrtle was born in Oregon in 1903. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Union, Columbia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.1.3  ~~  Muriel J. Stevens

Muriel was born in Oregon in 1906. The 1910 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Union, Columbia County. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at St Helens, Columbia County.

Mae and her twin sister Marie were born in Oregon in 1907. The 1910 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Union, Columbia County. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at St Helens, Columbia County.

Marie and her twin sister Mae were born in Oregon in 1907. The 1910 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Union, Columbia County. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at St Helens, Columbia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.1.6  ~~  Minnie E. Stevens

Minnie was born in Oregon in 1912. The 1920 census records that the school girl was living with her family at St Helens, Columbia County. The 1930 census records that Minnie was a press operator in a bag factory and she was living with her parents at Yankton, Columbia County.

Millard was born in Oregon in 1914. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at St Helens, Columbia County. The 1930 census records that Millard was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Yankton, Columbia County.

Merle was born in Oregon in 1918. The 1920 census records that the young girl was living with her family at St Helens, Columbia County. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Yankton, Columbia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.2  ~~  Ida Mae Staines

Ida was born in Michigan on 21st June 1879. The 1880 census records that the 11 month old infant was living with her family at Bushnell, Montcalm County. The 1900 census records that Ida was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Ronald, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.3  ~~  Merle Hall Staines

Merle was born in Palo, Ionia County on 8th February 1883. The 1900 census records that Merle was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Ronald, Ionia County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.4  ~~  Roy Garfield Staines

Roy was born in Palo, Ionia County on 14th April 1885. The 1900 census records that Roy was a farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Ronald, Ionia County. The 1910 census records that Roy was a Church Minister. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at Houlton, Columbia County in Oregon.

Roy married Arvilla Ward in about 1914; she was born in Washington State in 1892. Roy and Arvilla had at least four children – Donald (1915), Glenn (1920), Hazel (1921) and James (1923). The 1920 census records that Riy was a cooperage jointer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Portland, Multnomah County in Oregon. Also living with them was Arvilla's younger sister Pearl.

The 1930 census records that Roy was still a cooperage jointer and he and his wife and their four children were living in their own house (valued at $3,800) at Portland. Roy died at Portland on 5th May 1983 aged 98 years.

Donald was born in Oregon in 1915. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Portland, Multnomah County. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Portland.

1.4.4.3.3.8.4.2  ~~  Glenn M. Staines

Glenn was born in Oregon in 1920. The 1920 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with his family at Portland, Multnomah County. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Portland.

1.4.4.3.3.8.4.3  ~~  Hazel M. Staines

Hazel was born in Oregon in 1921. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Portland, Multnomah County.

James was born in Oregon in 1923. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Portland, Multnomah County.

1.4.4.3.3.8.5  ~~  William Bruce Staines

William was born in Michigan on 10th December 1888. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Ronald, Ionia County. The 1910 census records that William had no occupation, he was unmarried and he was living with his parents at Houlton, Columbia County in Oregon.

William married Nellie N. in 1913; she was born in Kansas in 1894. William and Nellie had at least three children – Edward (1914), Ruth (1918) and Naomi (1929). The 1920 census records that William was a cooperage jointer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Portland, Multnomah County in Oregon.

The 1930 census records that William was still a cooperage jointer and he and his wife and their three children were living in their own home (valued at $1,600) at Portland. William died at Beaverton, Washington State in July 1983 aged 94 years.

Edward was born in Oregon in 1914. The 1920 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Portland, Multnomah County. The 1930 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Portland.

Ruth was born in Oregon in 1918. The 1920 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Portland, Multnomah County. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Portland.

Naomi was born in Oregon in 1929. The 1930 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Portland, Multnomah County.

Charles and his younger brother and sister were all baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 30th November 1823. He probably emigrated to America with his parents in about 1830. Charles may have been recorded with his parents in the 1840 US census (only the head of household was named).

1.4.4.3.5  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary and her two brothers were baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst (below) on 30th November 1823. She was not recorded with her parents in the 1840 US census and she had probably either married or died.

1.4.4.3.6  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born at Staplehurst in October 1823 and he and his two elder siblings were baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 30th November 1823. Thomas emigrated to America with his parents in about 1830. Thomas was probably recorded with his parents at Orleans, New York in the US 1840 census. Thomas moved west with his father to Michigan in the late 1840's.

Thomas married Mary S. in 1848; she was born in Canada in June 1828. Thomas and Mary had at least two children – Cornelia (1849) and Willis (1856). The 1850 census records that Thomas was a sawyer and he was living with his wife and their infant daughter at Rollin, Lenawee County in south-eastern Michigan.

The 1870 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife and their son were still living at Rollin. His real estate was valued at $4,000 and his personal estate was valued at $960. The 1880 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife, their son and his wife were living at Rollin.

The 1900 census records that Thomas was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Rollin. The census records that Mary had borne two children and both of them were still alive. Thomas died in the early 1900's. The 1910 census records that Mary was a widow and she was living next door to her son Willis at Rollin.

1.4.4.3.6.1  ~~  Cornelia G. Alchin

Cornelia was born in Michigan in 1849. The 1850 census records that the infant girl was living with her family at Rollin. Cornelia was still alive in 1910. (married name Griswald?)

1.4.4.3.6.2  ~~  Willis E. Alchin

Willis was born in Michigan in November 1856. The 1871 census records that Willis was a farm worker and he was living with his parents at Rollin, Lenawee County. Willis married Alice D. Briggs at Rollin on 13th August 1879; she was born in Michigan in April 1860. The 1880 census records that Willis was a farmer and he and his young wife were living with his parents at Rollin.

The 1900 census records that Willis was a farmer and he and his wife were living alone at Rollin. The census confirms that they had no children. The 1910 census records that Willis was a farmer and he and his wife and their nephew (Lindon H. Griswald who was born in Michigan in 1905) were living at Rollin. Willis' widowed mother Mary was living next door to them.

Willis died in the 1910's. The 1920 census records that Alice was widowed and she and her nephew Lindon Griswald were still living at Rollin.

1.4.4.3.7  ~~  Rebecca Alchin

Rebecca was baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 20th July 1826. Rebecca died aged only 14 weeks and she was buried at Staplehurst on 8th August 1827.

1.4.4.3.8  ~~  Stephen Alchin

Stephen was born at Staplehurst in March 1829 and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 30th July 1829. He emigrated to America with his parents in about 1830 and then moved west to Michigan with his father some 20 years later. Although un-named in the census (only the name of the head of the household was taken) Stephen was probably recorded with his parents at Orleans County, New York in the US 1840 census.

Stephen married Sarah Ann Curtis in the early 1850's; she was born in Michigan in 1834. Stephen and Sarah had at least four children – Emma (1853), Rose (1856), Hortense (1858) and Cora (1861). The couple later adopted a son – Earl (1873).

The 1860 census records that Stephen was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Bushnell, Montcalm County. His real estate was valued at $600 and his personal assets at $350. His father and younger brother were living on neighbouring farms.

The 1870 census records that Stephen was a farmer and he and his wife and their four children were still living at Bushnell. His real estate was now valued at $4,000 and his personal assets at $600. He now had his father and two of his brothers living on neighbouring farms.

The 1880 census records that Stephen was a farmer and he and his wife and their two children and his wife's mother were living at Bushnell. His step-mother Phebe Alchin was living next door. Sarah died of paralysis aged 50 years at Bushnell on 22nd May 1883 (Michigan 294/1180). She was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

Stephen subsequently married Sarah M Gilbert (nee Collard) at Montcalm County on 31st March 1886; she was born in Canada in November 1855 and she had at least one child – George (1881). Stephen and Sarah had at least one child of their own – Earl (1889).

The 1900 census records that Stephen was a farmer and he and his wife, their son and her son from her first marriage were living at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.8.1  ~~  Emma Alchin

Emma was born in Michigan in 1853. The 1860 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell. The 1870 census records that Emma was a school teacher and she was living with her parents on their farm at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.8.2   ~~  Rose S. Alchin

Rose was born in Michigan 21st April 1856. The 1860 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell.

Rose died from consumption at Bushnell on 8th June 1877 (Michigan 236/80) aged 21 years. At the time of her death Rose was a school teacher. She was buried at Sunnyhill Cemetery, Montcalm County.

1.4.4.3.8.3  ~~  Hortense Alchin

Hortense was born in Michigan in 1858. The 1860 census records that the young girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell.

1.4.4.3.8.4  ~~  Cora B. Alchin

Cora was born at Bushnell in about 1861 or 1862. The 1870 census records that the school girl was living with her family on their farm at Bushnell. The 1880 census records that Cora was a school teacher and she was living with her parents at Bushnell.

Cora probably married Marvin Wilson at Montcalm County on 19th August 1884. The couple are not recorded in the 1900 US census.

1.4.4.3.8.5  ~~  Earl S. Alchin

Earl was born in Michigan in 1873 and he was adopted by Stephen and Sarah Alchin before 1880. The 1880 census records that the school boy was living with his adopted family at Bushnell. Earl died at Bushnell on 26th April 1884 (Michigan 283/1415) aged 11 ½ years from consumption.

1.4.4.3.8.6  ~~  Earl G. Alchin

Earl was born at Bushnell in July 1889. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bushnell. Earl married Mabel (possibly surnamed Maybee); she was born in Michigan in 1892. The 1910 census records that Earl was a farmer and he and his wife were living at Bushnell. Their 11 year old nephew Mackson Maybee was also living with them.
