The family lived at Staplehurst at first before moving to Marden.

The 1851 census records that Jesse was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and three of their children were living at Marden. They appear to have left Marden after the death of two of their daughters there in 1852. Jesse was an agricultural labourer and he must have moved around a lot as his children were born in a succession of small villages in the Maidstone area.

The 1861 census records that Jesse was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and four of their children were living in a cottage at Otham. The 1871 census records that Jesse was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their four children were living at 2 Barnes Cottage, Linton.

Jesse subsequently married Harriett Sanders in 1890 (Maidstone 1890 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1227); she was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1838.

The 1891 census records that Jesse was a farm labourer and he and his wife and his widowed brother James were living at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Jesse was an 82 year old labourer on the highways and he and his wife were living at Oak Cottage, Boughton Monchelsea. Jesse died, probably at his eldest daughter's home, on 7th May 1906 aged 86 years.

Carter and the witnesses were John Stephens and Ann Fullargar. William was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1839 and he was the son of George Stephens a labourer. Also living with them was their 11 year old grand daughter Winifred Fenner and a 78 year old carpenter of Cranbrook – William Whinsett (in 1861 and 1881 William was living with Mary's aunt Sophia Taylor and so perhaps he was a relative of some kind).

Mary was the witness recorded on the death certificate of her father in 1906.
