1.4.4.4.2.2.3  ~~  John William Mannering

John was born at Loose in 1871 (Maidstone 1871 September qtr Volume 2a Page 574). Later census record that John was born in 1869 but as he is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1871 census this seems unlikely.

The 1881 census records that John was a school boy and he was living with his family at Betts Cottage, Otham. John married Mary A; she was born at Hull in 1870. John and Mary had at least four children – Jesse (1893), Isaac (1895), John (1897) and Lucy (1899).

The 1901 census records that John was working as a dock labourer at Sculcoates near Hull in Yorkshire. He and his wife and their four young children were living at 1 Robinson's Court, 48 New George Street, Sculcoates.

1.4.4.4.2.2.3.1  ~~  Jesse Mannering

Jesse was born at Hull in 1893. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 1 Robinson's Court, 48 New George Street, Sculcoates.

1.4.4.4.2.2.3.2  ~~  Isaac Mannering

Isaac was born at Sculcoates in 1895 (Sculcoates 1895 June qtr Volume 9d Page 127). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 1 Robinson's Court, 48 New George Street, Sculcoates. Isaac enlisted in the Army during World War One. He was assigned to the 10th battalion Yorkshire Regiment with the rank of Private and regimental number 36378.

Isaac was killed in action during the hell of Passchendaele. He died on 4th October 1917 aged 20 years. Like many of his comrades, Isaac's body was never recovered and he is commemmorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

John was born at Hull in 1897 (Hull 1897 December qtr Volume 9d Page 278). The 1901 census records that John was living with his family at 1 Robinson's Court, 48 New George Street, Sculcoates.

Lucy was born at Hull in 1899 (Hull 1899 September qtr Volume 9d Page 313). The 1901 census records that Lucy was living with her family at 1 Robinson's Court, 48 New George Street, Sculcoates.

1.4.4.4.2.2.4  ~~  Caroline Mannering

Caroline was born at Loose in 1872. The 1881 census records that Caroline was a school girl and she was living with her family at Betts Cottage, Otham. Caroline married George Foster Purcell in 1892 (Maidstone 1892 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1381); he was born at Maidstone in 1874.

The 1901 census records that William worked as a brewers's labourer and he and his wife were living at Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.2.5  ~~  Elizabeth Mannering

Elizabeth was born at Breadhurst in 1876. The 1881 census records that Elizabeth was a school girl and she was living with her family at Betts Cottage, Otham. Elizabeth may have married Albert Jenner in 1900 (Maidstone 1900 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1501).

1.4.4.4.2.2.6  ~~  Charles Mannering

Charles was born at Detling in 1878. The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Betts Cottage, Otham. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with the family of his married sister Lucy Baker at Bearsted.

1.4.4.4.2.3  ~~  John William Mannering

John was born at Staplehurst and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 11th June 1844. John died in 1849 aged 5 years and he was buried at Marden on 27th June 1849.

1.4.4.4.2.4  ~~  Louisa Mannering

Lucy (who was also known as Louisa) was baptised at Marden on 5th August 1849. The 1851 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Marden. Lucy died in 1852 aged 2 ½ years and she was buried at Marden on 2nd April 1852.

1.4.4.4.2.5  ~~  Sophia Mannering

Sophia was born at Marden in late 1851 and she was baptised at Marden on 25th January 1852. Sophia died at the age of 4 months and she was buried at Marden on 28th March 1852.

1.4.4.4.2.6  ~~  William Mannering

William was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1854 and he was baptised at Marden on 16th July 1854. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Otham. The 1871 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at 2 Barnes Cottages, Linton.

William married Emily Lowdell (a corruption of Loudwell perhaps) in 1873 (Maidstone 1873 March qtr Volume 2a Page 705); she was born at Chatham in 1855. William and Emily had at least five children – Lucy (1873), William (1875), Emily (1878), James (1883) and William (1890). The 1881 census records that William was employed as a general labourer and he and his wife and their two daughters were living at 9 Skinners Cottages, Loose Road, Loose.

The 1891 census records that William was a general labourer and he and his wife and three of their children were living at Prospect Row, Loose. None of this family is recorded in the 1901 English census. Their eldest son died of wounds and at the time of his death on the Western Front in 1915, William and Emily were living at 38 Sun Road, Swanscombe.

1.4.4.4.2.6.1  ~~  Lucy Mannering

Lucy was born at Conniton (?) in 1873 (Maidstone 1873 December qtr Volume 2a Page ***). The 1881 census records that Lucy was a school girl and she was living with her family at 9 Skinners Cottages, Loose. She was not recorded with her family in the 1891 English census.

1.4.4.4.2.6.2  ~~  William John Mannering

William was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1875 (Maidstone 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 593) and he was baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 17th October 1875. William died aged 7 months (Maidstone 1876 June qtr Volume 2a Page 351) and he was buried at Boughton Monchelsea on 6th May 1876. His name was re-used in 1890.

1.4.4.4.2.6.3  ~~  Emily Mannering

Emily was born at Loose in 1878 (Maidstone 1878 June qtr Volume 2a Page 647). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 9 Skinners Cottages, Loose. The 1891 census records that Emily was a school girl and she was living with her family at Prospect Row, Loose.

Emily married Walter Packham in 1897 (Maidstone 1897 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1413); he was born at Hunton in 1876. Walter and Emily had at least two children – Wallace (1898) and James (1899). The 1901 census records that Walter was a stone quarryman and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 14 Tovill Hill, Maidstone.

Wallace was born at Loose in 1898 (Maidstone 1898 June qtr Volume 2a Page 747). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 14 Tovill Hill, Maidstone.

James was born at Loose in 1899. The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 14 Tovill Hill, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.6.4  ~~  James Vincent Mannering

James was born at Loose in 1883 (Maidstone 1883 September qtr Volume 2a Page 677). The 1891 census records that James was a school boy and he was living with his family at Prospect Row, Loose. As a very young man James served in the Boer War in South Africa – he may even have been a member of the Regular Army.

At the start of World War One, James was a Private in the 1st Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) with the regimental number L/6519. James was seriously wounded and he was evacuated to England for treatment. However he died of his wounds on 28th June 1915 aged 32 years. James is buried in the Swanscombe churchyard.

1.4.4.4.2.6.5  ~~  William S. Mannering

William was born at Loose in 1890. The 1891 census records that he was living with his family at Prospect Row, Loose.

1.4.4.4.2.7  ~~  Henry Mannering

Henry was born at Loose in 1855 (Maidstone 1855 December qtr Volume 2a Page 379) and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 18th November 1855. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Otham. The 1871 census records that Henry was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at 2 Barnes Cottages, Linton.

Henry married Eliza Jarrett at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 24th June 1876 (Maidstone 1876 June qtr Volume 2a Page 941); she was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1860 the daughter of Thomas Jarrett a labourer. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd Walter Scott and the witnesses were Arthur Waterman and Mary Marsh.

Henry and Eliza had at least six children – Lucy (1875), Albert Henry (1880), Emily (1881), Jessie (1884), Ada (1888) and Alice (1891). The 1881 census records that Henry was employed as a labourer at a saw mill. He and his young family were living next door to his parents at 10 Prospect Row, Loose Road, Loose.

The 1891 census records that Henry was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Henry had changed his occupation and his residence again. He was employed as a gas worker and he and his wife and their three youngest children were living at 12 Charlton Street, Maidstone.

Lucy was born at Loose in 1875 (Maidstone 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 596). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 10 Prospect Row, Loose Road, Loose. The 1891 census records that Lucy was living with her family at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea.

Albert was born at Maidstone in 1880. The 1881 census records that the toddler was living with his family at 10 Prospect Row, Loose Road, Loose. The 1891 census records that Albert was a school boy and he was living with his family at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea.

1.4.4.4.2.7.3  ~~  Emily Mannering

Emily was only 9 days old and still un-named when the 1881 census was taken. The 1891 census records that Emily was a 10 year old school girl and she was living with her family at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea. Emily died in 1897 aged only 16 years (Maidstone 1897 September qtr Volume 2a Page 457).

1.4.4.4.2.7.4  ~~  Jessie Mannering

Jesse was born at Loose in 1884 (Maidstone 1884 March qtr Volume 2a Page 728). The 1891 census records that Jessie was a school girl and she was living with her family at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Jessie was employed as a domestic servant and she was living with her parents at 12 Charlton Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.7.5  ~~  Ada Mannering

Ada was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1888 and she was baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 29th April 1888. The 1891 census records that she was living with her family at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at 12 Charlton Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.7.6  ~~  Alice Mannering

Alice was born at Boughton Monchelsea in early 1891 (Maidstone 1891 June qtr Volume 2a Page 739) and she was baptised a few months later at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 30th August 1891. The 1891 census records that the infant girl was living with her family at Church Street, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 12 Charlton Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.8  ~~  Alfred Mannering

Alfred was born at Maidstone in about 1857. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family in a cottage at Otham. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Barnes Cottages, Linton.

Alfred married Emma Drawbridge at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 9th October 1875 (Maidstone 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1019); she was born at Goudhurst in 1856 and she was the daughter of Samuel Drawbridge, a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Vicar (Rev'd Walter Scott) and the witnesses were William Marsh and Mary Whatson.

Alfred and Emma had at least ten children – Lucy (1875), Emma (1878), Alfred (1880), Elsie (1883), Frederick (1885), William (1886), Reuben (1889), Pearl (1893), Maud (1895) and Hilda (1899). The 1881 census records that Alfred was employed as an agricultural labourer and he and his young family were living at Cock Street, Boughton Monchelsea.

The 1891 census records that Alfred was a farm labourer and he and his rapidly growing family were living at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Alfred was a labourer at a paper mill and he and his wife and eight of their children were living at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.8.1  ~~  Lucy Sophia Mannering

Lucy was born at Boughton Monchelsea on 21st November 1875 (Maidstone 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 596) and she was baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 19th December 1875. The 1881 census records that Lucy was a school girl and she was living with her family at Cock Street, Boughton Monchelsea.

The 1891 census records that she was still at school and she was living with her family at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. Lucy married Elias Simmons in 1896 (Maidstone 1896 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1309); he was born at Hadlow in 1872. Elias and Lucy had at least two children – Florence (1897) and Edith (1898).

The 1901 census records that Elias was working as a gas stoker and he and his wife were living at 12 Dover Street, Maidstone.

Florence was born at Maidstone in 1897. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 12 Dover Street, Maidstone.

Edith was born at Maidstone in 1898 (Maidstone 1898 June qtr Volume 2a Page 756). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 12 Dover Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.8.2  ~~  Emma Laura Mannering

Emma was born at Boughton Monchelsea on 22nd February 1878 (Maidstone 1878 March qtr Volume 2a Page 642). Emma and her younger brother Alfred were baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 27th February 1880. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Cock Street, Boughton Monchelsea.

Unfortunately Emma died soon afterwards aged only 3 years (Maidstone 1881 June qtr Volume 2a Page 364). She was buried at Boughton Monchelsea on 21st May 1881.

1.4.4.4.2.8.3  ~~  Alfred Thomas Mannering

Alfred was born at Boughton Monchelsea on 5th February 1880 (Maidstone 1880 March qtr Volume 2a Page 668). Alfred and his sister Emma were baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 27th February 1880. The 1881 census records that the infant boy was living with his family at Cock Street, Boughton Monchelsea.

The 1891 census records that Alfred was a school boy and he was living with his family at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Alfred (known as Thomas) was working in a corn merchant's warehouse. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.8.4  ~~  Elsie Kate Mannering

Elsie was born at Boughton Monchelsea on 10th December 1883 (Maidstone 1883 March qtr Volume 2a Page 730). She was baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 21st December 1885. The 1891 census records that Elsie was a school girl and she was living with her family at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea.

The 1901 census records that Elsie (known as Kate) was employed as a paper bag maker and she was living with her parents at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone. Elsie married either William James Pound or Sydney Thomas Ranger in 1905 (Maidstone 1905 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1755).

Frederick was born at Boughton Monchelsea on 28th February 1885 (Maidstone 1885 June qtr Volume 2a Page 677) and he was baptised at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 7th April 1885. The 1891 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that Frederick was a labourer in a paper mill and he was living with his family at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

William was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1886 (Maidstone 1886 September qtr Volume 2a Page 729). The 1891 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that William was a labourer in a paper mill and he was living with his family at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

William may have been killed in action at Cambrai on the Western Front on 5th December 1917 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment).

Reuben was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1889 (Maidstone 1889 March qtr Volume 2a Page 726). The 1891 census records that Reuben was living with his family at 3 Forge Row, Boughton Monchelsea. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.8.8  ~~  Pearl Dorothy Mannering

Pearl was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1893 (Maidstone 1893 June qtr Volume 2a Page 716). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

Maud was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1895 (Maidstone 1895 September qtr Volume 2a Page 741). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.8.10  ~~  Hilda Eveline Mannering

Hilda was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1899 (Maidstone 1899 June qtr Volume 2a Page 814). The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at 5 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.4.2.9  ~~  Lucy Mannering

Lucy was born at Linton in mid to late 1861. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Barnes Cottages, Linton. She married John Whatson in 1880 (Maidstone 1880 September qtr Volume 2a Page 991); he was born at Brenchley in 1857. John and Lucy had at least three children – Lucy (1882), Frederick (1884) and Walter (1889).

The 1881 census records that John Watson senior was a bricklayer's labourer and he and his wife and his 8 month old nephew (John Whatson born at Linton) were living with his parents in law at 9 Prospect Row, Loose Road, Loose. The 1891 census records that John was still working as a bricklayer's labourer and he and his young family were living at Prospect Row, Loose. This family is not recorded in the 1901 English census.

1.4.4.4.2.9.1  ~~  Lucy A. Whatson

Lucy was born at Loose in 1882 (Maidstone 1882 September qtr Volume 2a Page 691). The 1891 census records that Lucy was a school girl and she was living with her family at Prospect Row, Loose.

1.4.4.4.2.9.2  ~~  Frederick Stephen Whatson

Frederick was born at Loose in 1884 (Maidstone 1884 September qtr Volume 2a Page 697). The 1891 census records that Frederick was a school boy and he was living with his family at Prospect Place, Loose.

1.4.4.4.2.9.3  ~~  Walter Victor Whatson

Walter was born at Loose in 1889 (Maidstone 1889 December qtr Volume 2a Page 725). The 1891 census records that he was living with his family at Prospect Row, Loose.

1.4.4.5  ~~  Anne Grant Alchin

Anne was baptised at St Nicholas' church, Linton on 15th April 1798. Ann married Robert Simmonds at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 15th July 1820. The ceremony was performed by the Vicar (Rev'd James Andrew) and the witnesses were the parish clerk John Beeching and the bride's brother Ambrose Alchin. Robert was a tailor who was born at Ashfield Thorpe, Norfolk in about 1799.

Robert and Ann had at least seven children – Stephen (1821), Ann (1827), Sophia (1831), Robert (1833), Charlotte (1835), Elizabeth (1840) and Thomas (1843). The 1841 census records that Robert was a tailor and he and his wife and their children (the enumeration sheet listing them has not survived) were living at George Street, Maidstone.

The 1851 census records that Robert was a tailor and he and his wife, four children and three grandchildren were all living at 15 Woollet Street, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that Robert was a tailor and common lodging house keeper and he was living with his wife, two children and three grandchildren at 46 High Street, Maidstone.

The 1871 census records that Ann (enumerated as Nance Grant Simmonds) was living 'for the moment' with her son Robert at High Street, Worcester. Robert Simmonds senior was living with his daughter Ann Gilliard at 15 Salem Street, Maidstone.

Robert died before 1881, probably in 1877 aged 79 years (Maidstone 1877 March qtr Volume 2a Page 385). The 1881 census records that Ann was widowed and she was living with her widowed daughter Ann Gilliard at 2 Arkcolls Yard, Romney Place, Maidstone. Ann probably died in 1884 aged '88' years (Maidstone 1884 December qtr Volume 2a Page 438).

1.4.4.5.1  ~~  Stephen Alchin Simmonds

Stephen was born at Boughton Monchelsea in 1821. It is not known if he was living with his parents at the time of the 1841 census as the relevant part of the census has not survived. Stephen married Charlotte Mellues (?) in 1842 (Maidstone 1842 June qtr Volume 5 Page 353); she was born in Cornwall in 1819.

Stephen and Charlotte had at least six children – John (1842), Joseph (1844), Robert (1846), Charlotte (1848), Diana (1851) and Henrietta (1854). The 1851 census records that Stephen was a tailor and he and his wife and three of their children were living at 10 Whitehall Place, Maidstone.

Charlotte died in the 1850's and Robert subsequently married Sarah; she was born at Maidstone in 1824 and she already had a child – Ellen (1848). Robert and Sarah had at least one more child – Isabella (1859).

The 1861 census records that Stephen was still a tailor and he and his second wife and three of their children were living at 43 Kingsley Road, Maidstone.

Stephen died in 1867 aged only 46 years (Maidstone 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 313).

1.4.4.5.1.1  ~~  John Stephen Simmonds

John was born at Maidstone in 1842. He is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1851 census and he may have been staying with relatives. The 1861 census records that John was an apprentice coach smith and he was living with his uncle George Craddock at Mill Street, Maidstone.

John married Diana. John and Diana had at least one child – Mary (1868). The parish register records that John was a labourer of Hammersmith in London.

1.4.4.5.1.1.1  ~~  Mary Ann Charlotte Simmonds

Mary was born at Hammersmith on 6th October 1868. She was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone with her cousin Minnie Mayger on 19th May 1872.

Joseph was born at Maidstone in 1844 (Maidstone 1844 March qtr Volume 5 Page 332). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 10 Whitehall Place, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that Joseph was an apprentice coach smith and he was living with his uncle George Craddock at Mill Street, Maidstone.

1.4.4.5.1.3  ~~  Robert Alchin Simmonds

Robert was born at Maidstone in 1846 and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 27th December 1846. Robert died in early 1848 aged a bit over 1 year (Maidstone 1848 March qtr Volume 5 Page 274).

1.4.4.5.1.4  ~~  Charlotte Jemima Simmonds

Charlotte was born at Maidstone in 1848 (Maidstone 1848 December qtr Volume 5 Page 331) and she waqs baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 4th February 1849. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 10 Whitehall Place, Maidstone.

The 1861 census records that the school girl and her two brothers were living with their uncle George Craddock at Mill Street, Maidstone. Charlotte married Alexander Mayger in 1869 (Maidstone 1869 December qtr Volume 2a Page 886); he was born at Maidstone in 1848 (Maidstone 1848 June qtr Volume 5 Page 341).

Alexander and Charlotte had at least six children – Minnie (1872), Henrietta (1874), Alexander (1879), Diana (1881), Charlotte (1884) and Rose(1885). The 1871 census records that Alexander was a labourer at the paper mills and he and his wife were living at 1 Baldwin's Passage, Maidstone. Charlotte's uncle and aunt George and Henrietta Craddock were living next door.

The 1881 census records that Alexander was a gas works labourer and he and his wife and their four children were living at 3 Trimley Street, Camberwell (Charlotte's younger sister was living 2 doors away). Alexander died in 1886 aged only 38 years (St Olave 1886 March qtr Volume 1d Page 165). The 1891 census records that Charlotte was a widowed charwoman and she and her four children were living at 10 Vaughan Road, Camberwell.

Minnie was born at Ashford Square, Maidstone on 21st January 1872 (Maidstone 1872 March qtr Volume 2a Page635) and she was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 19th May 1872. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 3 Trimley Street, Camberwell. The 1891 census records that Minnie was a leathermaker and she was living with her widowed mother at 10 Vaughan Road, Camberwell.

Minnie married Samuel Edwin Palmer in 1900 (Camberwell 1900 September qtr Volume 1d Page 1624); he was born at Camberwell in 1875. The 1901 census records that Samuel was a gas fitter and the newly wed couple were living at 3 Bonamy Street, Camberwell.

1.4.4.5.1.4.2  ~~  Henrietta Charlotte Mayger

Henrietta was born at Maidstone 1874 (Maidstone 1874 March qtr Volume 2a Page 649). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 3 Trimley Street, Camberwell. The 1891 census records that Henrietta was a machinist and she was living with her widowed mother at 10 Vaughan Road, Camberwell.

Henrietta married Isaac Butten in 1897 (Camberwell 1897 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1621); he was born at Rotherhithe in 1875. The 1901 census records that Isaac was a dresser (?) and he and his wife were living at 319 St James Road, Camberwell.

1.4.4.5.1.4.3  ~~  Alexander George Mayger

Alexander was born at Camberwell in 1879. The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 3 Trimley Street, Camberwell. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at 10 Vaughan Road, Camberwell.

Alexander married Mary Ann Butler or Annie Long in 1905 (Camberwell 1905 March qtr Volume 1d Page 974).

Diana was born at Camberwell in 1881 (Camberwell 1881 March qtr Volume 1d Page 859). The 1881 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with her family at 3 Trimley Street, Camberwell. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 10 Vaughan Road, Camberwell.

Diana married either Louis Percy Belcher or Albert Sydney Sherlock in 1902 (Camberwell 1902 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1677).

Dianna was born at Maidstone in 1851 (Maidstone 1851 March qtr Volume 5 Page 378). She and her younger sister Henrietta were baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 22nd January 1854. The 1851 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with her family at 10 Whitehall Place, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 43 Kingsley Road, Maidstone.

Diana had a natural born child – Mary (1869). Diana married Joseph Buckland in 1871 (Maidstone 1871 March qtr Volume 2a Page 635); he was born at Barming in 1850. Joseph and Diana had at least one child – Joseph (1879).

The 1871 census records that Joseph was a journeyman smith and he and his wife and her daughter were living at 4 Salem Street, Maidstone. The 1881 census records Joseph was a blacksmith and he and his wife and their two children were living at 5 Trimley Street, Camberwell.

Diana died in 1889 aged only 38 years (Camberwell 1889 September qtr Volume 1d Page 482). Joseph subsequently married Amy Florence Benet in 1890 (Camberwell 1890 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1312); she was born at Dover in 1867.

The 1891 census records that Joseph was still a blacksmith and he and his second wife were living alone at 25 Delafield Road, Camberwell.

Mary was born at Maidstone in 1869. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 4 Salem Street, Maidstone. The 1881 census records that the school girl (enumerated under the name of Charlotte) was living with her family at 5 Trimley Street, Camberwell.

Joseph was born at Peckham in 1879 (Camberwell 1879 March qtr Volume 1d Page 831). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 5 Trimley Street, Camberwell.

1.4.4.5.1.6  ~~  Henrietta Carolina Simmonds

Henrietta was born at Maidstone in 1854 and she and her elder sister Diana were baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 22nd January 1854.

Note – this child may actually be the natural daughter of Stpehn Simmonds's younger sister Sophia and the baptism entry done in such a way to disguise the baby's illegitimacy.

Isabella was born at Maidstone in 1859. The 1861 census records that the toddler was living with her family at 43 Kingsley Road, Maidstone.

1.4.4.5.2  ~~  Ann Simmonds

Ann was born at Maidstone in 1827. It is not known if she was living with her parents at the time of the 1841 census as the relevant part of the census has not survived. Ann married Frederick Gilliard; he was born at Maidstone in 1821. Frederick was a mariner and he was absent from home at the time of census taking for most years until his death in 1879.

Frederick and Ann had at least seven children – Robert (1848), Frederick (1850), Charles (1854), Walter (1860), Albert (1861), Benjamin (1864) and Stephen (1869). The 1851 census records that Ann and her two eldest children were living with her parents at 15 Woollet Street, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that Ann was a tailoress and she and her three children were living at 25 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

The 1871 census records that Frederick was a barge captain and he and his wife and five of their children were living with his father in law at 15 Salem Street, Maidstone. Frederick probably died in 1879 aged 58 years (West Ham 1879 September qtr Volume 4a Page 43).

The 1881 census records that Ann was a widowed tailoress. She and her son and her mother were living at 2 Arkcolls Yard, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that Ann was still a tailoress and she was visiting Mary Ann Bull at 35 Bale Street, Mile End.

1.4.4.5.2.1  ~~  Robert Simmonds Gilliard

Robert was born at Maidstone in 1848 and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 27th February 1848. The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at 15 Woollet Street, Maidstone. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 25 Brunswick Street, Maidstone.

Robert married Mary Jeffreys in 1867 (Maidstone 1867 June qtr Volume 2a Page 825); she was born at Chart in 1846. Robert and Mary had at least eleven children – Minnie (1868), Clara (1869), Robert (1872), Bertha (1873), Sydney (1875), Walter (1877), Percy (1880), Reginald (1882), Edith (1885), Ernest (1887) and Elsie (1889). The two eldest children were born in the Maidstone district but in about 1870 Robert moved his family to south-west England.

The 1871 census records that Robert was a solicitor's clerk and he and his wife and their two eldest children were living at Salem Street, Barnstaple in Devon. The 1881 census records that Robert was a solicitor's managing clerk and he and his wife and their seven children were living at 11 Wood Street, Bristol.

The 1891 census records that Robert was still a solicitor's clerk and he and his wife and ten of their children were living at 9 Ashley View, Stapleton which is near Bristol. Mary died before 1901. The 1901 censsu records that Robert was a widowed solicitor's managing clerk and he and eight of his children, his son in law and two grandchildren were all living at 587 Stapleton Road, Bristol.

Minnie was born at Maidstone in 1868 (Maidstone 1868 March qtr Volume 2a Page 619). The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Salem Street, Barnstaple. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 11 Wood Street, Bristol.

Minnie was not recorded with her family in the 1891 census. She appears to have returned home after the death of her mother in the 1890's. The 1901 census records that Minnie was still a spinster. She was the housekeeper for her widowed father and numerous siblings at 587 Stapleton Road, Bristol.

Clara was born at Loose on 26th October 1869 (Maidstone 1869 December qtr Volume 2a Page 572) and she was baptised at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 4th September 1870. The 1871 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Salem Street, Barnstaple. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 11 Wood Street, Bristol.

The 1891 census records that Clara was working as a governess and she was living with her parents at 9 Ashley View, Stapleton. Clara married William John Matthews in 1893 (Barton Regis 1893 December qtr Volume 6a Page 308); he was born at Bristol in 1865.

William and Clara had at least four children – Ernest (1895), Sydney (1897), Colston (1898) and Clara (1901). The 1901 census records that William was a chemist's assistant and he and his wife and their four children were living at 579 Stapleton Road, Bristol.

Robert was born at Barnstaple in 1872 (Barnstaple 1872 March qtr Volume 5b Page 510). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 11 Wood Street, Bristol. The 1891 census records that Robert was a solicitor's clerk (like his father) and he was living with his parents at 9 Ashley View, Stapleton.

Robert married Charlotte Emily Weeks in 1894 (Chepstow 1894 March qtr Volume 11a Page 11); she was born at Bristol in 1857 and so she was 15 years her husband's senior. Robert and Charlotte had at least two children – Cuthbert (1895) and Irene (1897).

The 1901 census records that Robert was no longer a clerk (his occupation is illegible but it begins 'electrified ?') and possibly his marriage had caused a scandal. He and his wife and their two children were living at 'Hazlemere', Yardley in Worcestershire.

Ernest and Bertha had at least two children – Violet (1898) and Douglas (1901). The 1901 census records that Ernest was a draper's assistant and he and his wife and their two children were living with his widowed father in law at 587 Stapleton Road, Bristol.
