Ambrose was born at Linton on 24th March 1800 and he was baptised at St Nicholas' church, Linton on 11th May 1800. He moved with his family to Boughton Monchelsea where he was a witness at the weddings of his sisters Anne and Elizabeth in 1820 and 1826 respectively.

Ambrose married Ann Waterhouse by banns at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 15th July 1821. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd James Andrew and the witnesses were Elizabeth Page and John Beeching (Elizabeth was also known as Ann Waterhouse according to her immigration papers and subsequently for the rest of her life in Australia but there is some belief amongst his descendants that Ambrose's wife was actually Elizabeth Waters). Ann / Elizabeth was the daughter of John Waters or Waterhouse and Elizabeth Craddock of Staplehurst. She was born at Staplehurst on 16th March 1799 and she was baptised there on 13th May 1799.

Left: Ambrose Alchin 1800-1877; Right: Emma Alchin (nee Plumb) 1839-1918

Ambrose and his family, which at the time included seven children, migrated to New South Wales as bounty emigrants aboard the vessel "Palmyra". They arrived at Sydney on 26th September 1838. The immigration journal records that Ambrose was a gardener and tree-cutter and Ann was a general servant, both of Staplehurst in Kent. They could both read and write and they were of the Methodist persuasion.

Ambrose and Ann had at least nine children – John (1821), Margaret (1822), Edward (1825), William (1827), Ambrose (1830), Ann (1832), Charles (1837), Thomas (1840) and George (1845). Only the two youngest of their children were born in Australia. After spending a few years in the vicinity of Camden, west of Sydney, Ambrose moved his family to Jerrawa, between Yass and Gunning, in the southern highlands of New South Wales.

Ann Alchin died on 10th November 1858 (NSW 1858/5913) aged 59 years and she was buried at Jerrawa. Ambrose was a typical Old Testament patriarch – he remarried at the age of 60 years to a much younger woman. He married Emma (Nel) Atkins nee Plumb at Camden on 1st December 1859. Nel was born on 3rd August 1839 and she arrived with her family at Moreton Bay, Queensland aboard the "Ghengis Khan" on 14th August 1854. She was the youngest of nine children of Joseph Plumb and Sarah Grainger. Emma was the widow of John Atkins and she already had three children of her own.

Ambrose Alchin as well as working a 40-acre farm at Oolong Creek near what was to become the village of Dalton was also a carrier. But he was far from Oolong Creek on the evening of Wednesday 9th July 1862. At that time he and his team were at the "Dog and Duck", a public house much used by teamsters in George St, Sydney. He was loading for the return trip to Gunning when the heavy hand of the law fell upon his shoulder. Instead of setting out for Gunning as intended he found himself before the Bench in the Centre Police Court.

It appears that on the 15th June at Penrith en route to Sydney, Ambrose had contracted with a woman named Janet McGregor to convey a box containing wearing apparel to Sydney. Janet McGregor travelled with him as far as Parramatta and asked Ambrose to have the box at the "Dog and Duck" where she would meet him on the following Monday between 4 and 5 o'clock. The appointment was never kept. That is, the lady was there on several occasions she said, but Ambrose, who (for reasons which it may be imprudent to ponder upon) had given his name as David Lawson was not present, nor was the box.

Despite several visits to the appointed public house she did not see him Ambrose again until a month later when she found him loading his team in George Street. She called the law. Ambrose at first denied that he knew anything about the box or it's owner but later, in court he said that he did bring the box to the "Dog and Duck" but not seeing the plaintiff there he had taken it back to Gunning where it still remained. He would send it he said immediately on his return.

If this were so – and it was not queried by the court – then Ambrose had made the trip from Penrith to Sydney; from Sydney to Gunning and back to Sydney all in the space of less than 30 days, a feat which might have stretched the credulity of the bullockies of the time, for a team travelled 12 miles in a day was a team that travelled well. Nevertheless Mr Roberts, for the defence submitted, "that he was no stealing and that the prisoner should be discharged".

The plaintiff McGregor thereupon withdrew the prosecution and Ambrose went on his way.

Ref: "Some Came Free" by E.G. Hazell

Ambrose had eight more children (the youngest born when he was 73 years old) by Emma – Lucy (1860), Mary (1862), Emma (1863), Edward or Ned (1865), Jabez (1867), Ambrosina (1869), Unnamed male (1872) and Angelina (1874). Ambrose died at Oolong Creek near Jerrawa in November 1877 (NSW 1877/9752) aged 77 years. He was buried at Dalton Methodist cemetery on 13th November 1877.

The 1901 electoral roll for the seat of Bland records that Emma was living at Best Street, Wagga Wagga with her step-son George Alchin and his family. The 1906 electoral roll for the seat of Werriwa records that Emma had returned to Dalton to live. Emma died at Dalton aged 84 years (NSW 1918/18333) and she was buried in the Methodist cemetery, Dalton on 7th November 1918.

1.4.4.6.1  ~~  John Alchin

According to his immigration papers John was born at Staplehurst on 13th October 1821 (was he actually the natural son of Ann Waters and named John William Gaynes – this requires further research). John migrated to Australia with his family aboard the "Palmyra" in 1838.
