"Alamein" by Mark Johnston and Peter Stanley (Oxford University Press 2002 – page 185-6) includes the circumstances of John's gallantry on that morning:

"That night (25th October 1942), a minelaying party under Warrant-Officer 'Cobber' Craig had laid 540 mines in no man's land. 'Thank God we did' he later wrote, 'because he attacked in the early hours of the morning and brought his tanks straight down on my mine field. His infantry got smashed to pieces; two tanks got within 15 yards of our forward Section posts but were knocked out. The 'Jerries' were running around in circles screaming out orders, but nobody seemed to be obeying them'.

With daylight, the battlefield was soon 'seething' within view of the 2/13th. A tank battle raged to the south, while the 2/48th tried to hold Trig 29 in the north. RAF bombers flew over every thirty minutes and, despite flak, effectively bombed Axis vehicles. Tanks and artillery harassed the 2/13th and the 2/17th; to the Australian's great annoyance, one or two ambulances fell victim to tanks. Snipers were especially active. When a 2/13th man, Private Taylor, went into no man's land and destroyed two disabled tanks with sticky bombs, he was pinned there for five hours by sniper and machine-gun fire."
