Volume 4 – The Alchins of Linton by Steve Green

Part 4 – Alchins of Linton, Kent; Montcalm, Michigan; and Dalton, NSW ...continued...

1.4.4.6.1.5.2  ~~  Hercules Edmund Alchin

Hercules was born at Dalton on 8th June 1886 (NSW 1886/35836). He married his first cousin Laura Alchin at Gunning on 3rd March 1915 (NSW 1915/3871). Laura was born at Dalton in 1887, the daughter of Matthew Alchin and Janet Russell. Hercules and Laura had at least eight children – Mona (1915), Richard (1917), Archibald (1919), Nancy (1921), Lindsay (1924), Robert (1926), Ruth (1928) and Shirley (1932).

Hercules enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. at Goulburn on 1st September 1915. He was assigned as a Trooper to the 6th Light Horse regiment with regimental number 3287. Hercules' attestation sheet gives his physical description – 5' 3", weight 140 lbs, dark complexion, black hair and brown eyes. At the time of his enlistment Hercules and his family were living at Clifford Street, Goulburn and he was employed as a labourer.

Unfortunately Hercules did not take to military life. It was probably not a matter of courage but one of dislike of regulation and conformity added to homesickness and worry about a young wife and baby. Hercules deserted from Liverpool Camp on 15th December 1915. It seems that the military caught up with him in early 1917. On 19th February 1917 he was awarded 30 days detention (to be served at Menangle) for deserting.

Incongruously there is a record of Hercules re-enlisting at Menangle on his release on 23rd March 1917 but it seems that he was not destined to stay for long with the military. He was discharged from the army at Liverpool Camp on 19th May 1917. His records carry a notation of "unlikely to become an efficient soldier".

The 1932 electoral roll records that Hercules was a labourer and he and his wife were residents of Dalton. Hercules re-enlisted in the Australian Army during World War 2 and he served in the Volunteer Defence Corps (N393834). The 1955 electoral roll for the seat of Hume records that Hercules was employed as a labourer and he and his wife were living at Dalton.

Hercules died at Dalton on 17th June 1973 (NSW 1973/64397) aged 87 years (Probate NSW 763262). Laura died on 29th July 1974 (NSW 1974/55950) also aged 87 years. They are buried alongside each other in the Methodist cemetery, Dalton.

Unlike many reinforcements Clyde did not spend very long in England and by late December he had joined his unit in France. Unfortunately he did not cope very well with the wet and cold weather in northern France and it is not surprising given his physique. For the next two years Clyde spent long periods in hospital in both England and France suffering from influenza, bronchitis and acute nephritis. His only real time spent with his unit was during the winter of 1916/17 and the summer of 1918.

Due to his continued ill health Clyde was sent home earlier than most of his fellow soldiers. He returned to Australia aboard HT "Nestor" on 12th December 1918. Clyde was discharged from the army soon afterwards. He married Doris Edna Lanham at Goulburn on 20th November 1920 (NSW 1920/18781).
