Richard enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. at Liverpool on 3rd March 1915. He was assigned as a Private with regimental number 1205 to the 19th Infantry Battalion. Richard's attestation sheet gives his physical description – height 5'9"; weight 142 lbs; fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

After fairly rudimentary training Richard embarked on HT "Ceramic" at Sydney on 25th June 1915. Along with other members of his battalion he received some further training but in August these new units were rushed to Gallipoli far too early in order to make good the losses of the more experienced battalions. Richard managed to stay in one piece until he was shot, almost certainly by a sniper, in the right arm and side on 14th October 1915.

Richard was evacuated to # 2 General Hospital at Alexandria where he lay dangerously ill and unidentified. His next of kin were not notified of his wounding until he regained conciousness on about 28th October 1915. He was pronounced out of danger on 21st November 1915 and his parents were notified of this. Richard's wounds were however severe enough for him to be returned to Australia on 3rd January 1916.

He was discharged from the Army on 13th June 1916 with a pension of 3 pounds per fortnight. Over the next two years his pension was gradually reduced to nothing as he recovered more fully. Once he recovered Richard was employed as a bread carter. He re-enlisted at Sydney on 15th July 1918 but he was kept in the Depot, perhaps to provide training to newer recruits.

Richard married Amy Margaret Smith at Penrith in 1918 (NSW 1918/12131). Richard and Amy had twelve children – Jack, Beatrice, Joyce, Jean, Gordon, Boyd, James, Bernice, Ronald, Frederick, Maxwell and Barry. Reginald was born at Luddenham on 11th May 1895 (NSW 1895/15902). After leaving school Reginald was employed as an orchardist and he spent 3 years in the militia with the Light Horse. Reginald enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. at Cootamundra on 2nd May 1916. He was assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion as a Private and with regimental number 6764. Reginald's attestation sheet provides his physical description – height 5'7"; weight 132 lbs; dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Reginald embarked on Sydney with the 22nd reinforcements to the 8th Battalion aboard the "Port Napier" on 17th November 1916 and he disembarked at Devonport in England on 29th January 1917. For the duration of the voyage only, he was made an acting Lance Corporal. After further training in England, Reginald joined his battalion in France on 26th May 1917.

In September 1917 the Battle of Passchendaele raged and one of the fiercest engagements during the battle was at Polygon Wood. On 21st September 1917 Reginald was wounded in action, possibly as a result of being buried by a shell. During this action the 19th Battalion lost 9 officers and 139 men. CEW Bean in Volume 4 of his History of the First World War (page 787) has this to say:

"During the morning of the 21st some movement 200-300 yards ahead of the line in Polygon Wood suggested that the enemy was trying to establish his front there………….. Late in the afternoon the advance parties of Australian relieving battalions began to make their way to various parts of the front, and at 6.30 a German bombardment fell heavily on the pillboxes in the 2nd Division's area. Anzac House and Garter Point were hit again and again."

The 19th Battalion was not used for the continuation of the Polygon Wood battle on 25 and 26th September when even heavier casualties were suffered by the Australians. On the following day however Reginald was discharged back to his battalion but it is likely that he had not properly recovered or had been weakened. He was taken sick on 27th October 1917 but after he was diagnosed with advanced trench fever he was evacuated to England on 21st November 1917.

After a few months in hospital and then convalescing, Reginald was transferred to the Provost Corps on 28th May 1918. He remained in England for the rest of the war. In October Reginald fell victim to the Spanish Flu epidemic and he was admitted to hospital on 31st October 1918. He wasn't discharged until 6th December 1918 and soon after he returned to duty.

However the war had ended and discipline in the 1st A.I.F. was beginning to become irksome to the troops waiting for repatriation to Australia. On 11th January 1919 Reginald was charged with "conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he allowed a prisoner to escape while in custody." Reginald was awarded 10 days forfeiture of pay.

He returned to Australia on 1st January 1920 aboard the vessel "Marathon" and he was discharged from the Army on 15th February 1920. Soon after his return to Australia, Reginald married Elsie A. Richardson at Penrith in 1920 (NSW 1920/19871). They had three children – Geoffrey, Laura and Nancy.

Reginald re-enlisted in the Army at Paddington on 2nd June 1941 (N271502). At the time he was living at Ourimbah on the NSW central coast. Reginald was discharged on 5th November 1947 as a Sergeant in 21st Works Company. Reginald lodged a Repatriation claim on 15th September 1966. 1.4.4.6.3  ~~  Edward Alchin

Edward was born at Staplehurst on 22nd June 1825 and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 4th September 1825. He migrated to New South Wales with his family aboard the "Palmyra" in 1838 and settled at Bringelly near Camden before the majority of the family moved on to Jerrawa. Edward married Margaret Johnson nee Wall at St Thomas' church, Mulgoa on 11th November 1852 (NSW 1852 Volume 38C # 445) after the publication of the banns.

Margaret Johnson

The ceremony was performed by Rev'd John Houghton and the witnesses were John Haynes (his brother in law) and Elizabeth Masters – both of Bringelly. Margaret was a widow of Bringelly and she may have had at least two children from her previous marriage – Jane (1844) and Matthew (1848). Her daughter later married her widowed brother in law.

Edward and Margaret had two children – Ann (1853) and William (1855). The baptismal entries for his two children show that he was a farmer of Jerrawa. Edward died at Forbes on 5th November 1862 (NSW 1862/4660) aged only 37 years. He was probably seeking his fortune on the gold fields, which were very rich at the time. Margaret died at Dalton on 9th June 1899 (NSW 1899/5795) aged 77 years. She was buried in the Methodist cemetery, Dalton.
