Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Mary Roughan and she was born at Innes, County Clare in 1831. Her parents died during the Great Irish Famine of the late 1840's and Elizabeth was selected by the Parish Relief Committee to be sent to Australia as part of the Irish orphaned girls migration scheme. Elizabeth arrived at Sydney aboard the vessel "Thomas Arbuthnot" on 3rd February 1850 and she was among the large group of girls who were sent to the Yass depot to be indentured out as servant girls.

Ambrose and Elizabeth had seven children – Ann (1853), Charles (1855), Ambrose (1857), George (1859), Elizabeth (1861), Lydia (1863) and Rebekah (1866). Ambrose was a farmer of Jerrawa according to baptism records of the mid 1850's. Elizabeth died at Jerrawa on 9th January 1866 aged 35 years of "natural causes following the birth of her last child" (NSW 1866/7291).

Ambrose was a labourer and farmer of Jerrawa at the time his first wife was alive. After his first wife's death Ambrose 'married' Hannah Luxon nee Barnes; she was born in Northumberland in 1830. Ambrose and Hannah probably had at least three children – Samuel (1869), Eva (1870) and Sidney (1874).
