William Leslie Alchin (1861 – 1938)

Obituary Notice

By the passing of the late William Alchin on 10 July 1938, Cunningar District has lost one of it's outstanding personalities. Born at Gunning in 1861, he entered the railway department at the age of 18 years, was appointed ganger at 22 years and was later transferred to Cunningar where for 28 years he filled the same position.

Perhaps the most noteworthy achievement, whilst in this position, and one of which he was justly pound, was the construction of the railway dam at Cunningar at which he was the ganger in charge. His work having met with the approval of the Railway Department, when it was decided to construct a railway dam at Grenfell, he was appointed to a similar position at that work.

Failing health necessitated his retirement from the service of the Government Railways in 1919 and he spent the evenings of his life at his home in Cunningar. Despite his disabilities, he was possessed of a wonderfully retentive memory, and this combined with a happy and cheerful disposition, made it a pleasure for anybody to visit his home. The writer has enjoyed many an hour listening to reminiscences of his youthful days. He could recall his first glimpse of Cunningar, when as a boy of 15 he passed through the village on foot, little thinking that he was destined to spend the greater part of his life there.

He married Mary Sargent of Boorowa River, on the 6th January 1884, and they celebrated their golden wedding four and a half years ago. He is survived by his widow, fours sons, Percy (Auburn NSW), Wilfred (Teralba NSW), Charles (Mt. Druit NSW), Amos (Harden NSW) and four daughters Mrs Bell (Cunningar), Mrs Pollard (Cullerin), Mrs Noble (Cootamundra) and Miss Olive Alchin (Cunningar). One son, Cecil and one daughter Maud, died as children.

Surviving brothers are: Edward (Castle Hill), Richard (Cullerin), Percy (McMahon's Reef), George (Bowning), and sisters Mrs Hazell (Bethungra), Mrs Beer (Canterbury) and Mrs G. Langdon, also predeceased him.

The funeral on Monday afternoon was largely attended. After a short service at the home of the deceased, the cortege proceeded to the Methodist section of the Murrumburrah Cemetery, preceded through Harden and Murrumburrah by brethren of the Grand United Oddfellows Lodge of which of body he was for 56 years an enthusiastic member. The service at the home and graveside were conducted by Rev. J. Stanley Pain who spoke feelingly of the Christian qualities possessed by the deceased, whose influence for the good in the lives of those who knew him will always remain as a living monument to his memory. The Oddfellows service was by Bro. C. Price, District Master. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of J. S. Swell (represented by F. Andriske).

Obituary Notice

In memory of Maud Alchin, who departed this life on 17th October 1892, at Cunningar, aged 5 months.

An infant fair, our darling Maud,

Was borne from earth away;

Her illness brief, her pain severe,

Her gain eternal day.

She lives above, whilst we below

Canst say, "Unerring One,

Although 'tis hard, Thou Knowest best,

Thy will in all be done."

E'en truly now it seemeth good,

For her this earth might cloy;

While in the ransomed throng beyond

She 'll nought but bliss enjoy.

An angel fair to guide us on,

Our thoughts in heaven to keep,

Communing with God in prayer,

We'll tread the rocky steep.

Help all, fear Saviour, so to walk,

That when we've Jordon passed,

United on the heavenly shore

We'll join our loved at last.

Inserted by her loving parents, William and Mary Alchin, Cunningar

William Edward Thomas Stancier Alchin

The Australian forces went into action for the first time on the Western Front at Fromelles on 19th and 20th July 1916. The attack was designed as a diversion to draw German forces away from the Somme battle. Unfortunately it was soon obvious to the Germans that it was a diversionary attack and after early successes the 5th Australian Division was severely mauled. The division suffered over 5000 casualties including 24 officers and 601 other ranks from the 53rd Battalion alone.

As a result William and other reinforcements were rushed to the front to rebuild the battalion. He joined the battalion near Fromelles on 25th July, just a few days after the battle. On 22nd September William suffered chest pains; this was later diagnosed as pleurisy. He spent three months in hospital in France before he was transferred to a hospital at Cardiff on 17th December 1916. He was discharged from hospital on 6th January 1917 and he spent two more months convalescing.

William was then posted to the newly established 61st Infantry Battalion, part of the 6th Division. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25th July 1917 but due to the lack of recruitment in Australia, the 6th Division was broken up to provide reinforcements to the divisions already in France. William was re-posted to the 53rd Battalion and he rejoined his unit in France on 2nd October 1917.

William then suffered a bout of trench fever and he spent the period 3-11 February 1918 in an Australian hospital. On his release he returned to his battalion near Ypres where it soon became clear that the Germans were making massive preparations for the 1918 Spring offensives. In the weeks before the offensives broke, there were raids, counter –raids and artillery bombardments (Bean: Volume 5 Pages 109-111). William was killed in action during one of these skirmishes near Wyschaete on 14th March 1918. He is buried in the Somer Farm Cemetery.

The 35th Infantry Battalion formed part of the 9th Brigade of the 3rd Australian Division. This division was the main unit used to attack at Passchendaele Ridge on 12th October 1917. There were many casualties caused by artillery fire on the jumping off trenches and later by machine gun fire during the advance. Bean describes the situation on that day:

"The 9th Brigade went forward in the utmost confusion; and as , even on the ridge, the mud was difficult, the hope, if there ever was one, of catching the quick barrage vanished……The machine gun fire at the start came, on the 9th Brigade's right from the ruined farmhouse near Defy Crossing; on it's centre, from "Hillside Farm", and on it's left, from Augustus Wood. The pillbox opposite the centre was supported from the rear by a trench in which were Germans with machine guns, and here occurred a delay which threatened to wreck the whole attack. It was not until an hour after programme time that these places were rushed by the neighbouring portion of the line under Captains Carr and Dixon of the 35th Battalion…..but as soon as the 35th crossed to the eastern side of the hill it became the target of a number of field and heavy guns which, from hedges and other cover in various parts of the landscape, fired over open sights."

The attack achieved its early objectives but the rain and the enemy counter attacks combined to push the Australians back nearly to their start points. On that day the 3rd Australian Division suffered nearly 3200 casualties, of which the 35th Battalion's share was 18 officers and 296 men, including Arthur Montague Alchin who was killed (12th October 1917). Arthur left a will dated 5th April 1917 bequeathing all his estate to his widowed mother.
