1.4.4.6.8.4.1  ~~  Austin Clarence Anderson

Austin was baptised at Young on 1st May 1896. He took up farming after what was probably rudimentary schooling. Prior to WWI Austin spent 12 months in the militia at Maroubra in Sydney. He enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. at Liverpool on 17th April 1915 and he was assigned to the 9th reinforcements to the 1st Light Horse Brigade with the rank of Trooper. Unfortunately Austin caught a chill which developed into chronic bronchitis. As a result he was discharged from the Army as medically unfit on 19th August 1915.

After he recovered Austin re-enlisted but at a different location and this time he applied for the infantry. He enlisted at Cootamundra on 16th April 1916 and he claimed he was a labourer of Young. Austin was assigned to the 4th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Private and regimental number 6211. At the time of his enlistment Austin's father was supposedly dead and his mother was living at Grenfell Street, West Wyalong.

Austin's attestation sheet provides his physical description: Height 5'6" (his initial enlistment shows his height as 5' 3 ½"); weight 127 lbs; fair complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. After initial training Austin embarked at Sydney aboard the transport vessel "Euripedes" on 9th Sept 1916. He disembarked at Plymouth on 26th October 1916.

However Austin had fallen ill again during the voyage and he was sent straight to hospital. He was not discharged until 22nd November 1916. After further training Austin was sent to France and he joined his unit on 24th February 1917. At dawn on 15th April 1917 the Germans launched a major attack on the junction of the 1st and 2nd Australian Divisions near Lagnicourt on the Somme. After fierce fighting the Germans were repulsed but Austin had suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg (in the same battle Austin's first cousin Albert Brown was awarded the DCM for "conspicuous gallantry").

After treatment in France Austin was repatriated to England and he was admitted to the Boscombe military hospital. He wasn't discharged from hospital until 13th July 1917 and he then spent several months convalescing. Austin returned to France early in the new year and he rejoined his unit on 16th January 1918.

In early March Austin was sent to the Gas School on a course for a couple of weeks. At the end of March the Germans launched their major Spring offensives and all available troops were recalled to the Front. Austin was gassed at the Battle of Villers-Brettoneux on 25th April 1918 and he was again admitted to hospital. It must have been a relatively minor attack as he was discharged from the 14th General Hospital on 20th June 1918.

Austin rejoined his unit for the third time on 27th June 1918. His unit took part in the Battle of Hamel and the Peaceful penetration that followed. Austin was wounded for the third time on 10th July 1918. This time he suffered a minor gunshot wound to the left arm. Austin was sent back to his unit on 4th August 1918 and he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 29th August 1918.

Austin must have suffered further problems with his first wound. He was re-admitted to hospital on 13th October 1918 suffering from "an injury to his right leg". He stayed in hospital until 14th January 1919. Austin embarked on HT "Aeneas" at Southampton on 31st May 1919 and he disembarked at Sydney on 20th June 1918.

Austin was discharged from the Army on 28th August 1919. He married Cecelia V. Murray in 1924. Cecilia died at West Wyalong in 1929. Austin then married Kathleen W. Crosbie in 1930; she was born at Barmedman in 1904.

The last entry on his military file is for a repatriation department claim on 8th November 1949. Austin died at Tumbarumba in 1966 aged 70 years.
