The Australian Infantry divisions were moved to the Western Front in April 1916 and Albert was to serve the rest of the war in this theatre. Albert was a Lewis guuner and he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for bravery at the Battle of Lagnicourt on 15th April 1917 (his first cousin Austin Anderson was wounded in this battle on the same day). C.E.W Bean in "Anzac to Amiens" (pages 334-337) tells the story of the battle:
Only the Victoria Cross takes precedence over the DCM. The citation for Albert's medal reads: "For conspicuous gallantry during an enemy attack on 15th April against Noreuil. He was a member of a Lewis Gun team which was in a very exposed position owing to the enemy machine gun fire from our right flank. The other members of his team were either killed or wounded leaving Pte Brown the only one to manage the gun. With remarkable coolness and pluck he at once proceeded to locate and engage the enemy machine gun which was responsible for the team's casualties. He was successful in silencing the enemy machine gun which was afterwards captured. Had it not been for Pte Brown's grand display of grit and determination his gun must have been captured."
