The 1901 census records that Albert was still a bachelor. Alfred married Elizabeth; she was born in 1857. Alfred and Elizabeth had at least one child Alfred (1886). They may have had two daughters as well Ellen (1888) and Kate (1892). Elizabeth died at Staplehurst in 1896 aged 38 years and she was buried at Frittenden on 19th November 1895. The 1861 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with his family at Lake Cottage, Frittenden. Robert died at Frittenden in 1865 aged almost 4 years (Cranbrook 1865 March qtr Volume 2a Page 394). Albert married Elsie Ransom in 1895 (Cranbrook 1895 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1443); she was born at Frittenden in 1876. Albert and Bessie had at least three children Bessie (1896) and Albert and Elsie (1901). The 1901 census records that Albert was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their child were living at Burdon House, Frittenden. The 1851 census records that Robert was an agricultural labourer for James and Rachel Boorman at Peas Ridge, Frittenden. Robert may have emigrated to America (Michigan) and married his cousin Lucy Staines. 1.4.4.7.5 ~~ Jemima Thomas Jemima Thomas was baptised at Frittenden on 9th June 1833. The 1881 census records that William was a boot and shoe maker and he and his wife (who was a dressmaker) and their youngest son were living at The Row, Cranbrook. Thomas married Elizabeth Page; she was born at Throwleigh in 1812. Elizabeth already had a child Jane Page (1837). Thomas and Elizabeth had at least one child John (1850). The 1851 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his family were living at Chart next Sutton. 1.4.4.8.1.1 ~~ John Alchin John was born at Chart next Sutton in 1850 (Hollingbourn 1850 December qtr Volume 5 Page 292). The 1851 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with his family at Chart next Sutton. 1.4.4.9 ~~ Elizabeth Alchin Elizabeth was born at Staplehurst on 13th July 1807. She married John Hoad at St Peter's church, Boughton Monchelsea on 31st October 1826. The ceremony was performed by the Vicar (Rev'd J.D. Haslewood) and the witnesses were the brides brother (Ambrose Alchin) and the parish clerk (John Beeching). John was born at Staplehurst in about 1806. John and Elizabeth had at least eleven children John (1827), David (1829), Mary (1831), Charles (1833), Frances (1835), Sarah (1837), Eliza (1839), James (1842), Ambrose (1844), Lucy (1847), George (1850) and Elizabeth (1853). The 1841 census records that Elizabeth was a labourer's wife (John was not present at the time) and she and her seven children were living at Sutton Valence. The 1851 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their five youngest surviving children were living at Staplehurst Road, Sutton Valence. The 1861 census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife and their four children were living at Headcorn. John died in 1865 aged 60 years (Hollingbourne 1865 December qtr Volume 2a Page 340) and he was buried at Headcorn on 4th November 1865. Elizabeth subsequently married George Gascoigne on 2nd May 1868 (Maidstone 1868 June qtr Volume 2a Page 775); he was born at Headcorn in 1813. The 1881 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife were living at Waghorns Row, Headcorn. Elizabeth died on 14th June 1888 aged 80 years. 1.4.4.9.1 ~~ John Hoad John was born at Frittenden in 1827. The 1841 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Sutton Valence. John married Sarah; she was born at East Sutton in 1826. John and Sarah had at least eleven children Elizabeth (1846), Sarah (1848), John (1850), Lucy (1852), Eliza (1855), George (1857), Keziah (1860), Emily (1862), William (1864), Lewis (1867) and Charles (1869). The 1851 census records that John was working as an agricultural labourer. He and his wife and their two eldest surviving children were living at Sutton Valence. The 1861 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at White Horse Road, Sutton Valence. The 1871 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Sutton Valence. There is no sign of John or any member of his family in any subsequent English census and accordingly they must have emigrated (probably to the United States in the late 1870's). The 1880 US census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife and three of their sons were living at Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. 1.4.4.9.1.1 ~~ Elizabeth Hoad Elizabeth, commonly known as Betsy, was born at Headcorn in 1846 and she was baptised at Headcorn on 21st June 1846. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Sutton Valence. The 1861 census records that Betsy was living with her parents at White Horse Road, Sutton Valence. At the age of 16 years Betsy married Thomas Fullagar at Sutton Valence on 22nd April 1862 (Hollingbourne 1862 June qtr Volume 2a Page 733). Thomas was born in 1842, the son of Joseph Fullargar a bailiff. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd Frank Walker and the witnesses were Henry and Eleanor Bourne. There is no sign of this couple in any subsequent English census and they may have emigrated. 1.4.4.9.1.2 ~~ Sarah Hoad Sarah was born at either Sutton Valence or Headcorn in 1848 (Hollingbourne 1848 June qtr Volume 5 Page 284). Sarah died in 1849 aged about 1 year (Hollingbourne 1849 June qtr Volume 5 Page 213). 1.4.4.9.1.3 ~~ John Hoad John was born at Sutton Valence in 1850 (Hollingbourne 1850 June qtr Volume 5 Page 295) and he was baptised at Sutton Valence on 7th April 1850. The 1851 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with his family at Sutton Valence. The 1861 census records that John was a school boy and he was living with his family at White Horse Road, Sutton Valence. 1.4.4.9.1.4 ~~ Lucy Hoad Lucy was born at Sutton Valence in 1852 (Hollingbourne 1852 December qtr Volume 2a Page 416) and she was baptised at Sutton Valence on 17th October 1852. The 1871 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Sutton Valence. George may have emigrated to the United States in 1875. George married Eliza in 1878; she was born in New York in 1861. George and Eliza had at least seven children, all of whom were still alive in 1910. These children included Cora and Oscar (1895) and Frances (1902). The 1900 US census entry for George and his family is almost illegible but he and his wife and five of their children were living at Macedon, Wayne County, New York. The 1910 census records that George was a farmer and he and his wife and their three children were still living at Macedon. 1.4.4.9.1.6.1 ~~ Cora B. Hoad Cora and her brother Oscar were born in New York State in 1895. The 1910 census records that Cora was living with her parents at Macedon, Wayne County. 1.4.4.9.1.6.2 ~~ Oscar C. Hoad Oscar and his sister Cora were born in New York State in 1895. The 1910 census records that Oscar was living with his parents at Macedon, Wayne County. 1.4.4.9.1.6.3 ~~ Frances Hoad Frances was born at Macedon, Wayne County in 1902. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Macedon. 1.4.4.9.1.7 ~~ Keziah Eleanor Hoad Keziah was born at Sutton Valence in 1860 (Hollingbourne 1860 September qtr Volume 2a Page 453) and she was baptised at Sutton Valence on 2nd September 1860. The 1861 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at White Horse Road, Sutton Valence. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Sutton Valence. 1.4.4.9.1.8 ~~ Emily Hoad Emily was born at Sutton Valence in 1862 (Hollingbourne 1862 September qtr Volume 2a Page 490) and she was baptised at Sutton Valence on 7th September 1862. The 1880 US census records that William had a disability and he was living with his family at Palmyra, Wayne County. 1.4.4.9.1.10 ~~ Lewis Hoad Lewis (sometimes spelt Louis) was born at Sutton Valence in June 1867 (Hollingbourne 1867 September qtr Volume 2a Page 581) and he was baptised at Sutton Valence on 25th August 1867. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Sutton Valence. Lewis emigrated to the United States with his family in the late 1870's. The 1880 US census records that the school boy was living with his family at Palmyra, Wayne County. Lewis became a naturalized American in 1892. The 1900 census records that Lewis was a piano regulator and he was living with his brother and sister in law (George and Edith? Adams). Lewis married Carrie in 1903; she was born in New York state in 1874. Lewis and Carrie had no surviving children. The 1910 census records that Lewis owned a piano shop and he and his wife were living at Waterloo, Seneca County in New York. The 1920 census records that Lewis was a retired piano merchant and he and his wife were still living at Waterloo. The 1930 census records that Lewis was now an antiques dealer and he and his wife were still living at Waterloo. Surprisingly for what seems to be an affluent person Lewis did not own his own home and rented one for $15 per month. 1.4.4.9.1.11 ~~ Charles Hoad Charles was born at Sutton Valence in 1869 and he was baptised at Sutton Valence on 19th September 1869. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Sutton Valence. Charles emigrated to the United States with his family in the late 1870's. The 1880 US census records that the school boy was living with his family at Palmyra, Wayne County. 1.4.4.9.2 ~~ David Hoad David was born at Headcorn in 1829 and he was baptised at Headcorn on 24th May 1829. The 1841 census records that David was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Sutton Valence. David married Harriett; she was born at Staplehurst in 1832. The 1851 census records that David was an agricultural labourer and he and his young wife were living alone at New Barn Road, Sutton Valence. David and Harriett had at least one child William (1862). The 1871 census records that George was a ploughman and he and his wife and their five children were living at Barming Woods near East Barming. The 1881 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Hall Farm, Tonbridge Road, Barming. 1.4.4.9.3.1 ~~ John Chaney John was born at Headcorn in 1850. The 1891 census records that George was a general labourer and he was lodging with his cousin Elizabeth King (nee Hoad) and her very large family at 3 Foley Street, East Maidstone. The 1901 census records that George was an unmarried labourer and he was still living with his cousin at 3 Foley Street, East Maidstone. 1.4.4.9.3.3 ~~ Charles Chaney Charles was born at Headcorn in 1857. The 1871 census records that Charles was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Barming Woods near East Barming. Charles married Emma R.; she was born at Southwark in 1857. Charles and Emma had at least three children George (1878), Charles (1880) and Ada (1882). The 1881 census records that Charles was a Police Constable in the Kent County Constabulary. He and his wife and their two young children were living at Water Lane, Ospringe. Emma died in the 1880's. Charles subsequently married Rose; she was born at Marden in 1864. Charles and Rose had at least one child Winifred (1889). The 1891 census records that Charles was a Police Constable and he and his second wife and his three children were living at Sundridge. The 1901 census records that Charles was now working as a cement labourer and he and his wife and two of their children were living at Milton Road, Rainham. 1.4.4.9.3.3.1 ~~ George J. James married Louisa Gascoigne at Sutton Valence on 30th April 1864 (Holloingbourne 1864 June qtr Volume 2a Page 823); she was born in 1845 the daughter of George Gascoigne (who married James' mother Elizabeth in 1868), a labourer. James and Louisa had at least two children Louisa (1866) and James (1869). There is no further record of James or his family in any English census. 1.4.4.9.8.1 ~~ Louisa Hoad Louisa was baptised at Headcorn on 30th September 1866 (Hollingbourne 1866 September qtr Volume 2a Page 551). 1.4.4.9.8.2 ~~ James Hoad James was baptised at Headcorn on 28th February 1869. 1.4.4.9.9 ~~ (William) Ambrose Hoad Ambrose was born at Sutton Valence in 1844 (Hollingbourne 1844 December qtr Volume 5 Page 272) and he was baptised at Sutton Valence on 29th December 1844. The 1851 census records that Ambrose was a school boy and he was living with his family at Staplehurst Road, Sutton Valence. The 1861 census records that Ambrose was a general labourer and he was living with his parents at Headcorn. Ambrose married Frances Smith at Headcorn on 16th September 1867 (Hollingbourne 1867 September qtr Volume 2a Page 947); she was born at Sutton Valence in 1846 the daughter of Thomas Smith a labourer. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd Henry Jewell and the witnesses were Betsy Hoad and Samuel Carter, the parish clerk. Ambrose and Frances had at least two children John (1868) and Eliza (1872). The 1871 census records that Ambrose was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their young son were living at Ulcombe a couple of miles east of Sutton Valence. At the time of his daughter's baptism Ambrose was a waggoner of Langley. There is no further sign of Ambrose or his family in any subsequent English census. At the time of his marriage George was a labourer of Headcorn. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd Henry Jewell and the witnesses were Edmund and Betsy King. George and Matilda had at least five children John (1878), Daisy (1880), Matilda (1882), Charles (1888) and Bertie (1897). The 1881 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their two young children were living at Headcorn. The 1891 census records that George was a plate layer and he and his wife and two of their children were living at Bower Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that George was a navvy on the Great Eastern Railway and he and his wife and their three sons were living at 91 Sandling Road, Maidstone. Matilda died in early September 1882 aged only six weeks (Hollingbourne 1882 December qtr Volume 2a Page 412). Elizabeth married Edmund King at Headcorn on 19th October 1872 (Hollingbourne 1872 December qtr Volume 2a Page 995). Edmund was a 20 year old labourer of Headcorn, the son of Alfred King a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd Henry Jewell and the witnesses were George Gascoign and Eliza Brown. At the time of her marriage Elizabeth was living at Ulcomb. Edmund and Elizabeth had at least nine children Mary (1873), Frederick (1875), Fanny (1876), Betsy (1878), Jane (1880), Charles (1882), Kate (1885), Albert (1888) and Ernest (1890). The 1881 census records that Edmund was a general labourer and he and his wife and their four surviving children were living at 9 Astley Street, Maidstone. The 1891 census records that Edmund was a carman and he and his wife and seven of their children were living at 3 Foley Street, East Maidstone. Elizabeth's nephew (who almost her age) George Chaney was also living with them. The 1901 census records that Edmund was a carman and he and his wife, their three youngest children and George Chaney were still living at 3 Foley Street, East Maidstone. 1.4.4.9.12.1 ~~ Mary Jane King Mary was born at Ulcombe in 1873 and she was baptised at Headcorn on 26th October 1873. Mary died in 1876 aged only 3 years and she was buried at Headcorn on 30th December 1876. 1.4.4.9.12.2 ~~ Frederick John King Frederick was born at Headcorn in 1875 and he was baptised at Headcorn on 29th August 1875. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 9 Astley Street, Maidstone. The 1901 census records that Frederick was working as a 'surgery boy' and he was living with his parents at 3 Foley Street, East Maidstone. 1.4.4.9.12.3 ~~ Fanny King Fanny was born at Headcorn in 1876 and she was baptised at Headcorn on 26th November 1876. Thomas married Sarah Hatcher at Chart Sutton on 19th October 1831; she was born at East Barming on 25th January 1806 according to one researcher although the evidence of the 1881 census and her death certificate is that she was born at Sittingbourn in 1813. Thomas and Sarah had at least ten children William (1832), Thomas (1834), Edmund (1836), Sarah (1838), Mary (1840), Charles (1844), Elizabeth (1846), John (1848), Emma (1850) and Frederick (1852). The parish register records that Thomas was a labourer of firstly Staplehurst, then of Chart Sutton and later of Boughton Monchelsea. The 1841 census records that Thomas was a gamekeeper and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Sutton Road, Maidstone. Thomas employed his young step-niece Martha Grey as a servant girl. There is no surviving record of the family in the 1851 census. At the time of his youngest child's baptism in 1853, Thomas was a gamekeeper of Maidstone. The 1861 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Sutton Road, Maidstone. The 1871 census records that Thomas was still an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their spinster daughter Mary were living at Sutton Road, Maidstone. Thomas may have died in 1877 aged '66' years (Maidstone 1877 March qtr Volume 2a Page 394). Sarah may have died in 1884 aged 71 years (Maidstone 1884 March qtr Volume 2a Page 417). 1.4.4.10.1 ~~ William Alchin William was born at Staplehurst in 1832 and he was baptised at All Saints' church, Staplehurst on 14th October 1832. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Sutton Road, Maidstone. There is no surviving trace of William or his family in the 1851 census. William married Eliza Russell - probably in 1855 (Maidstone 1855 June qtr Volume 2a Page **); she was born at Maidstone in 1835. William and Eliza had at least seven children Emily (1854), Thomas (1858), Mary (1860), John (1865), Ann (1868), Elizabeth (1871) and Kate (1873). The 1861 census records that Eliza and her three eldest children were living with her mother (Mary Ann Russell) at Loose Road, Maidstone. William was absent at the time and he may have been away working. The 1871 census records that William was a shoemaker and he and his wife and four of their children were living at Labourers Cottages, Daveys Road, Croydon. William died in 1878 aged 45 years (Croydon 1878 March qtr Volume 2a Page 142). The 1881 census records that Eliza was a widowed charwoman and she was living with her three youngest children at Church Street #4 Annex, Croydon. Her married eldest son was living next door with his family. The 1891 census records that Eliza was a charwoman and she and her two daughters and three grandchildren were living at 3 Crosland Road, Croydon. The 1901 census records that Eliza was living with the family of her married daughter Elizabeth Murphy at 37 Medway Road, Croydon. Eliza probably died in 1911 aged 75 years (Croydon 1911 September qtr Volume 2a Page 388). 1.4.4.10.1.1 ~~ Emily Alchin Emily was born at Maidstone in 1855 (Maidstone 1855 September qtr Volume 2a Page 391). The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Loose Road, Maidstone. The 1881 census records that Emily was a servant and she was living at London Road, Croydon. Emily married William James Latter soon after the census was taken (Croydon 1881 June qtr Volume 2a Page 321); he was born at Guildford in 1853 and he appears to have usually called himself James. William and Emily had at least five children James (1882), Emily (1883), Allan (1885), Frederick (1888) and Thomas (1891).
