Volume 4 – The Alchins of Linton by Steve Green

Part 4 – Alchins of Linton, Kent; Montcalm, Michigan; and Dalton, NSW ...continued...

1.4.4.10.1.2  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born at Loose in 1858 (Maidstone 1858 March qtr Volume 2a Page 434). The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Loose Road, Maidstone. The 1871 census records that Thomas was already working as a shoemaker and he was living with his parents at Labourers Cottages, Daveys Road, Croydon.

Thomas probably married Louisa Munday in 1874 when he was only 16 years old (Croydon 1874 December qtr Volume 2a Page 340); she was born at Croydon in 1854. Thomas and Louisa had at least two children – Emily (1875) and Rosina (1880). The 1881 census records that Thomas was employed as a general labourer. He and his wife and their two young children were living at Church Street #3 Annex, Croydon. Also living with them was Thomas' brother in law Harry Pinion.

The 1891 census records that Thomas was a general labourer and he was staying with his married sister Mary Ann Green at 6 Sawyers Lane, Croydon. Louisa must have died during the 1890's. The 1901 census records that Thomas was a corporation sewage labourer and he was boarding at 14 Beddington Terrace, Croydon.

Thomas probably died in 1922 aged 65 years (Croydon 1922 September qtr Volume 2a Page 289).

1.4.4.10.1.2.1  ~~  Emily M. Alchin

Emily was born at Croydon in 1875. The 1881 census records that Emily was a school girl and she was living with her family at Church Street Annex #3, Croydon.

1.4.4.10.1.2.2  ~~  Rosina Eleanor Alchin

Rosina was born at Croydon in 1880 (Croydon 1880 June qtr Volume 2a Page 197). The 1881 census records that the infant was living with her family at Church Street #3 Annex, Croydon. Rosina died in 1882 aged 2 years (Croydon 1882 June qtr Volume 2a Page 120).

1.4.4.10.1.3  ~~  Mary Ann Alchin

Mary was probably born at Croydon in 1860 (Croydon 1860 June qtr Volume 2a Page 161). The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Loose Road, Maidstone. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Labourers Cottages, Daveys Road, Croydon. Mary had a child out of wedlock – Mary (1878).

Mary married Harry Pinion in 1879 (Croydon 1879 December qtr Volume 2a Page 300); he was born at Croydon in 1857. The 1881 census records that Harry was a painter and he was staying with his brother in law Thomas Alchin. It is unclear what had happened to this family as it seems that they reached the very bottom levels of society. Mary Ann Pinion is recorded at the Queens Road Duppas Hill Workhouse and Infirmiary. She is described as a pauper and her occupation is domestic servant. With her were her two children – Mary and a 5 month old unnamed infant. Mary later had another child – Edith (1882).

Mary turns up in the 1891 census as Mary Ann Green, the wife of Henry Green who was born in Somerset in 1864. Henry was an agricultural labourer and he and Mary and her two daughters were living at 6 Sawyers Lane, Croydon. Also living with them were Mary's elder brother Thomas Alchin and Eliza Webb and her two children.

1.4.4.10.1.3.2  ~~  Infant Pinion

This child was born at Croydon in late 1880. The 1881 census records that the 5 month old unnamed infant and her mother were inmates of the Croydon Workhouse and Infirmiary. It seems extraordinary that a child could still remain unnamed after five months.

The 1901 census records that she was the wife of William Murphy (born London in 1868) despite the fact that she had an 11 day old daughter named Elizabeth Alchin. William was a labourer and he and Elizabeth, his daughter Jessie, Elizabeth's two children and his widowed mother in law Eliza Alchin were all living at 37 Medway Road, Croydon.

The 1871 census records that Jane was single (?) and she and her three children were living with her widowed father at Rainham. There is no sign of her husband but there is a record of Edward Alchin a 34 year old unmarried groom who was working at Vinters House, Boxley. However this man's place of birth is given as Glastonbury, Somerset. It seems likely though that this is the missing Edmund.

The 1881 census records that Jane was a married laundress and she and her four children were living at Rainham. Again there is no sign of her husband. Jane probably died in 1909 aged 71 years (Milton 1909 September qtr Volume 2a Page 473).
