Part 6 – Other Alchin Families of Interest

6b. The Alchins of Wilmington and Dartford

There seem to have been two lots of John and Ann Alchins baptising children in the Dartford area in the period 1760 to 1780. John is the first Alchin at Dartford from whom modern descendants can probably be traced. There is no surviving record of his baptism but either he or the other John Alchin was probably the son of Thomas Alchin and Sarah Brown who married at Dartford on 13th November 1703. John and Ann Alchin senior baptised at least three children at Dartford – John (1744), Ann (1745) and Elizabeth (1749).

1  ~~  John Alchin

He may have been the son of John and Ann Alchin of Dartford and if so he was baptised at Dartford on 1st July 1744. However there was a John Alchin who was baptising children at Wilmington in the 1750’s and it seems more likely that this was his father. Did he marry twice and in each case to a woman named Ann? Whichever John he is, he married Ann and they had at least six children who were all baptised at Wilmington – George (1776), William (1778), Mary (1781), Elizabeth (1782), Thomas (1784) and James (1787).

Nothing more is known of John. John died prior to 1829. Ann died on 12th October 1835 aged 92 years. She was buried with her youngest son at Wilmington on 18th October 1835:

“Mr James Allchin died 15 December 1829 aged 42. Also Mary Allchin his wife died 17th December 1830 aged 28 years. Also Ann Allchin mother of the above James Allchin died 12th October 1835 aged 92”

George was baptised at Wilmington on 12th July 1776.

1.2.  ~~  William Alchin

William was baptised at Wilmington on 12th July 1778. He married Martha; she was born outside of Kent in about 1770. William and Martha had at least four children – Sophia (1805), William (1806), James (1808) and Thomas (1815). William was named the Executor of his youngest brother’s will in 1829 but when it came time to prove the will he renounced the executorship of the will (see below).

The 1841 census records that William was a Publican of the “Two Brewers” inn at Lowfield Street, Dartford. Living in the inn with him were his wife, his twos sons and his daughter and her two children. Martha died at Dartford on 18th October 1843 (Dartford 1843 December qtr Volume 5 Page 68) aged 75 years (although the 1841 census gives her age as about 65 years).

The 1851 census records that William was a licensed victualler of “The Two Brewers”, Lowfield Street, Wilmington. Also living with him was his unmarried son, his widowed daughter in law, his grandson Edmund Ward and his son Thomas and his family.

The 1861 census records that William was a retired inn keeper and he was living with his son and granddaughter at Lowfield, Dartford. William died at Dartford on 26th June 1867 aged 89 years (Dartford 1867 June qtr Volume 2a Page 193). William and Martha are buried with their daughter and their youngest son at Wilmington.

The 1851 census records that Thomas was a ‘victualler (out of business)’. He and his wife and their three children were living with his widowed father at ‘The Two Brewers’, Lowfield Street, Wilmington.

Thomas may have died in 1852 (Dartford 1852 September qtr Volume 2a Page ***). Susannah subsequently married John Miles. The 1871 census records that John was a licensed victualler and he and his wife and her daughter were living at Lowfield Street, Dartford.

Mary was baptised at Wilmington on 13th January 1781.

1.4  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at Wilmington on 10th October 1782.

1.5  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born at Wilmington on 13th December 1784 and he was baptised at Wilmington on 22nd December 1784. Thomas married Lucy Hawes at St Sepulchre’s church, London in 1807. Lucy was born in London in about 1780.

Thomas and Lucy had at least six children that we know of – Edward (1807), Joseph (1814), Joseph (1815), Eve (1817), Adam (1819) and Ebenezer (1823). There is no surviving record of Edward’s baptism but we know from their wedding certificates that Edward and Adam were brothers.

It is the children’s names which gives some clues to the relationship of Thomas within the family. Adam and Eve were also used by his cousin (?) at East Malling in 1828 and Ebenezer was also used by his nephew (?) at Northampton in 1857 (the only other use of Ebenezer by any of the Alchin families).

Five of the known children of Thomas and Lucy were baptised at Woolwich on the southern bank of the Thames near London. The 1841 census records that Thomas was a smith and he and his wife and their two unmarried sons were living at Union Street, Woolwich Arsenal.

Thomas died at his home at Union Street, Woolwich on 14th May 1850. He had been ill for some years but his immediate cause of death was certified as constipation from which he had suffered for 3 days. His death certificate records that Thomas was a 66 year old smith.

1.5.1  ~~  Edward Hawes Alchin

Edward was born in about 1807 or 1808, possibly at Woolwich. At this stage I have been unable to find any surviving baptism record for him. Thomas and Lucy Alchin were baptising children at Woolwich between 1814 and 1823 and it is likely that the record of Edward’s baptism has simply not survived. Edward’s marriage certificate clearly states that his father was “Thomas Alchin, Smith”.

Edward may have had a daughter either in an unknown first marriage or who was his (or one of his wives’) natural daughter – Henrietta (1832). She was recorded with him in the 1841 census. Edward married Sarah Ann Pheby Nesmith at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 22nd January 1835.

Sarah must have died, probably in childbirth, within a year or so of their marriage. Edward subsequently married Frances Hawes (a cousin probably) at the parish church of St Stephen at St Albans on  25th December 1837 (St Albans 1837 December qtr Volume 6 Page 743). Frances was the daughter of Ann Hawes.

The ceremony was performed by the vicar, Rev’d Southwell and the witnesses were Joseph William Hawes and Maria Nicholls. Frances was a 22 year old spinster of St Albans (she was born at St Albans in 1815), the daughter of William Linton Hawes who was a grocer (his middle name gives some evidence of a family connection the village of Linton near Maidstone). Edward was a 30 year old widowed cordwainer of St Stephens.

Edward and Frances had at least four children – Joseph (1838), Edward (1841), Henry (1844) and Elizabeth (1848).The 1841 census records that Edward was a shoemaker (probably making boots for the military) and he and his wife, his two children and his mother in law were living at 29 Union Street, Woolwich Arsenal.  His widow’s death certificate in 1871 also indicates that Edward worked at the Woolwich Arsenal.

Edward probably died in 1848 aged 41 years (Greenwich 1848 September qtr Volume 5 Page 207). The 1851 census records that Frances was a widowed annuitant and she and three of her children were living at 41 Union Street, Woolwich.

Frances died at her home at 72 Pallison Road, East Plumstead on 20th March 1871 aged 55 years (Woolwich 1871 March qtr Volume 1d Page 650). She had suffered from typhoid fever for three weeks prior to her death which was attested by Matilda Hogwood of 95 Ann Street, Plumstead. Frances’ only daughter Elizabeth had died only a few days before her and it is likely that she died from typhoid as well.

1.5.1.1  ~~  Joseph Silvanus Alchin

Joseph was born at Woolwich on 21st July 1838 (Greenwich 1838 September qtr Volume 5 Page 215) and his name was registered as Silvanus Joseph Alchin. The 1841 census records that the young boy (named as Silvanus) was living with his family at 29 Union Street, Woolwich Arsenal.

The 1851 census records that Joseph was a schoolboy and he was living with his widowed mother at 41 Union Street, Woolwich. Joseph and Elizabeth had at least two children – Joseph (1869) and Francis (1873).

The 1871 census records that Joseph was employed as a fitter and turner and he and his wife and their young son were living at 22 Spray Street, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Joseph was employed as an ammuniton engineer and he and his wife and their three children were living at 17 Bastion Road, Plumstead. Agnes died in 1948 aged 73 years (Surrey NE 1948 June qtr Volume 5g Page 347). At some time (yet to be established but probably after the death of his wife) Joseph moved to Australia.

L to R: Martin Allchin; Ellen and baby Fred Alchin; Martin & Ellen’s children

The following information was provided by Martin’s grand-daughter Harlene Annett:

“Martin Allchin emigrated to Canada in 1902. The attraction was free farmland in the wide open spaces of the new province of Saskatchewan. He was married to Mary Brand. We think he married her in England and that she died in childbirth. Martin wrote to his late wife’s best friend, Ellen Wall, and asked her if she would like to come to Canada and marry him. He married Ellen Louise Wall on 13th December 1907 and the marriage certificate says he was a widower. The wedding took place in Saskatchewan at the bridegroom’s home but the name of the town is indecipherable on the wedding certificate.

The witness at the wedding was Lucy Brand. It says she was the sister of the groom but it is more likely that she was his sister in law (either the wife or sister of Tom Brand who was the brother of Mary Brand). There is a comment on the marriage certificate “neighbours were scarce” which might explain why there were no other witnesses. They were married by the Methodist minister but they were both adherents of the Church of England.

Martin had a farm 6 miles out of the town of Wynyard in a very flat and bleak area of Saskatchewan. Ellen had six children without the aid of doctors – Frederick (1908), Edward (1910), Marjorie (1912), Audrey (1914), Philip (1917) and Denis (1921). In the early 1930’s farming was not too good in the west – dust bowl and depression – so the whole family moved to Windsor, Ontario in hope of finding work in the automotive factories there.

Martin eventually abandoned the family and “rode the rails” back to Saskatchewan leaving Ellen to fend for herself with the five children who were now in their teens. The girls had to leave school and get jobs housekeeping to help support the family. Eventually they had to go on the dole.

Martin was a gruff man, liked his booze and as his son said “treated his horses better than his kids”. My grandmother Ellen was a smart lady who was always knitting. She died in 1966 aged about 86 years. Of course, we knew better than to question her about her past so we didn’t hear much.”
