The Alchins of Wilmington and Dartford ..continued 1.5.6.2.5 ~~ Henry Glover Alchin Henry was born in 1882 (Vic 1882/15264), probably either at Malvern or Cranbourne. He married Lilian May Graham in 1906 (Vic 1906/8981); she was the daughter of Thomas Graham and Emily Paten. Henry and Lilian had at least three children - Eric (1907), Rupert (1910) and Selina (1913). The 1914 electoral roll records that Henry was a labourer of Poowong. Lilian died at Melbourne on 18th May 1939 (Vic1939/ 4195) aged 54 years (Probate Vic 305/762). Henry died at Yallourn in 1962 (Vic 1962/3128) aged 80 years. 1.5.6.2.5.1 ~~ Eric Paten Alchin Eric was born at Melbourne on 27th July 1907 (Vic 1907/21526). He married Dorothy Anna Reeve in 1928 (Vic 1928/10507). Eric enlisted in the RAAF at Point Cook on 10th February 1927 (#1168) and he continued to serve with the Air Force until after the end of the Second World War. He was discharged with the rank of Warrant Officer on 5th November 1946. Eric died at Kingswood (near Penrith), NSW on 22nd August 1996 aged 89 years. 1.5.6.2.5.2 ~~ Rupert Glover Alchin Rupert was born at Prahran on 1st July 1910 (Vic 1910/22271). He enlisted in the RAAF at Winchelsea on 5th September 1939 (# 4732). He was discharged as a Flight Sergeant on 7th November 1946. Rupert married Florence Gaby Ninette Stevens and they had at least one child – Ken (who died in 1950). Rupert died at Moe on 29th August 1985 (Vic 1985/21624) aged 75 years (Probate Vic 15/281). His probate record describes Rupert as a retired gentleman of Trafalgar. 1.5.6.2.5.3 ~~ Selina Emily Alchin Selina was born at Poowong in 1913 (Vic 191624912). She married Newton Carl Dans in 1936 (Vic 1936/3162). 1.5.6.2.6 ~~ James Samuel Alchin James was born at Cranbourne in 1884 (Vic 1884/8653). He married Minnie Beatrice Wilson in 1907 (Vic 1907/5520). James and Minnie had at least one child – Norman (1907). It seems that James took his family interstate or he may even have deserted his wife who may have obtained a divorce as she subsequently married Albert Burns Drummond in 1914 (Vic 1914/11032). The 1914 electoral roll for the seat of Dandenong records that James was a labourer of Poowong. James married Christina Amelia Buick in 1916 (Vic 1916/2890). James died at Brighton in 1944 (Vic 1944/5723) aged 60 years. 1.5.6.2.6.1 ~~ Norman James Alchin Norman was born at Drouin in 1907 (Vic 1907/26260). 1.5.6.2.7 ~~ David Archie Alchin David was born at Cranbourne in 1886 (Vic 1886/3281). He married Daisy Maud Glover at Yanbattan in 1912 (Vic 1912/3869); she was the daughter of William Glover and Emma Mary Sandman. David and Daisy had at least four children – David (1912), Allan (1914), Harold (1918) and Betsy (1922). Their eldest son was killed in action in Libya in 1941. The 1931 electoral roll for the seat of Gippsland records that David was a farmer of Toora near Foster. David died at Warragul in 1953 (Vic 1953/23868) aged 67 years. Daisy died at Noble Park on 22nd November 1974 (Vic 1974/29010) aged 86 years (Probate Vic 07/385). 1.5.6.2.7.1 ~~ David John Alchin David was born at Korrumburra on 23rd August 1912 (Vic1912/ 21720). After leaving school he helped his father run the family farm. He enlisted in the Australian Army at Dandenong on 17th July 1940 (VX46063). At the time he was living at Frankston Road, Dandenong. David was posted to the 2/23rd Infantry Battalion and he served with his unit in the Libyan desert. He was killed in action during the siege of Tobruk on 17th May 1941. His unit was one of those used to push the Germans out of the salient they had created in the Tobruk defences. David was buried in the Acroma Military cemetery about 25 kilometres southwest of Tobruk. 1.5.5.2.7.2 ~~ Allan Alfred William Alchin Allan was born at Kyabram in 1914 (Vic 1914/23610). He married Audrey Louise Rose Miles in 1940 (Vic 1940/17919). Allan died at Pakenham in 1980 (Vic 1980/10688) aged 66 years. 1.5.6.2.7.3 ~~ Harold Archie Alchin Harold was born at Loch on 17th December 1918 (Vic 1918/28927). He enlisted in the Army at Langwarry on 18th July 1941 (V100226). Harold was discharged with the rank of Private from the 17th Garrison Brigade on 3rd February 1944. 1.5.6.2.7.4 ~~ Betsy Lee Alchin Betsy was born in 1922 (Vic 1922/32394). 1.5.6.2.8 ~~ Alfred Wilson Alchin Alfred was born at Poowong in 1888. He died at Poowong in 1914 (Vic 1888/7057) aged 26 years. 1.5.6.2.9 ~~ Ruby Eveline Alchin Ruby was born at Poowong in 1890 (Vic 1890/26171). She married Thomas Edward Glover at Poowong in 1911 (Vic 1911/3402). 1.5.6.2.10 ~~ Ebenezer Eric Alchin Ebenezer was born at Poowong in 1893 (Vic 1893/6559). The 1914 electoral roll for the seat of Flinders records that he was a labourer of Poowong. Ebenezer married Margaret Agnes Bransgrove in 1926 (Vic 1926/5154). The 1931 electoral roll records that he was a farm hand of Avondale near Poowong. Ebenezer died at Poowong on 8th August 1966 (Vic 1966/18791) aged 73 years (Probate Vic 652/498). Margaret died at Drouin on 14th February 1990 (Probate Vic 20/098). 1.5.6.2.11 ~~ Clarice Kezia May Alchin Clarissa was born at Drouin in 1894 (Vic 1894/20053). She married Leslie George Tarrant in 1919 (Vic 1919/4547). 1.5.6.2.12 ~~ Lilian Gertrude Alchin Lilian and her twin sister Eva were born at Poowong in 1897 (Vic 1897/5648). She never married and the 1931 electoral roll for the seat of Flinders records that she was living with her brothers at Avondale, Poowong North. Lilian died at Poowong on 24th December 1968 (Vic 1968/1248) aged 71 years (Probate Vic 693/073). 1.5.6.2.13 ~~ Eva Louisa Adelaide Alchin Eva and her twin sister Lilian were born at Poowong in 1897 (Vic 1897/5647). Eva married Thomas Attenborough in 1924 (Vic 1924/6167). 1.5.6.2.14 ~~ Herbert George Berling Alchin Herbert was born at Poowong in 1898 (Vic 1898/21308). He married Mabel Victoria Clancy in 1929 (Vic 1929/2278); she was the daughter of Alexander and Alice Clancy and she was born in 1907. Herbert and Mabel had at least two children one of whom died quite young – David (1943-1948) and June (1932-1975). The 1931 electoral roll for the seat of Flinders records that Herbert was a farmer of Avondale, Poowong North. Herbert died at Yannathan on 8th March 1961 (Vic 1961/4500) aged 63 years (Probate Vic 17/077). However administration of his estate was not finalised until 9th April 1987. Mabel died at Frankston in 1985 (Vic 1985/10365) aged 78 years. 1.6 ~~ James Alchin James was baptised at Wilmington on 18th March 1787. He married Mary Robinson at the church of St Martin in the Fields, Westminster on 18th June 1822; she was born in about 1802. James and Mary had children (his will makes this clear) but their names and the number of them are not yet known. They probably had at least two children – William (1823) and Mary (1825). James lived in London up to the time that he died on 15th December 1829 aged 42 years. He was buried at Wilmington on 25th December 1829:
Mary died at Bond Street, London on 17th December 1830 aged 28 years. She was buried at Wilmington with her husband. 1.6.1 ~~ William George Alchin William was born in London on 15th March 1823. He was baptised at St Leonard’s church, Shoreditch on 21st December 1823. There is no further record of William. 1.6.2 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was born in London on 11th April 1825. She was baptised at St Leonard’s church, Shoreditch on 3rd May 1825. 2. ~~ John Alchin Little is known about this John Alchin either. He may have been the John Alchin, son of John and Ann Alchin, who was baptised at Dartford on 1st July 1744. This John also married Ann and they had at least two children – William (1764) and Richard (1774). 2.1 ~~ William Alchin William was baptised at Dartford on 29th April 1764. William married a woman named Martha (see also above William and Martha Alchin of Wilmington). It seems likely that they had at least three children – Sarah (1784), John (1794) and Caroline (1796). 2.1.1 ~~ Sarah Alchin Sarah was baptised at Dartford on 1st December 1794. 2.1.2 ~~ John Alchin John was baptised at Dartford on 26th September 1794. 2.1.3 ~~ Caroline Alchin Caroline was baptised at Dartford on 9th September 1796. 2.2 ~~ Richard Alchin Richard was baptised at Dartford on 20th February 1774. He probably married Ann Whitman at Bexley on 15th February 1796; she was born in about 1776. Richard and Ann had at least ten children – George (1796), Mary (1797), Mary (1799), Ann (1801), William (1803), Thomas (1806), James (1808), George (1810), Richard (1813) and John (1815). Ann probably died at Wilmington in 1820 aged 44 years and she was buried at Wilmington on 16th May 1820. The 1851 census records that Richard was a widowed pauper and he was living with his son’s (John) family at Frog’s Island, Dartford. Richard probably died in 1859 aged about 85 years (Dartford 1859 December qtr Volume 2a Page 153). 2.2.1 ~~ George Alchin George was baptised at Dartford on 9th August 1796. His name was re-used by his family in 1810. 2.2.2 ~~ Mary Ann Alchin Mary was baptised at Dartford on 20th March 1797. She died before 1799. 2.2.3 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was baptised at Dartford on 14th August 1799. 2.2.4 ~~ Ann Alchin Ann was baptised at Dartford on 28th July 1801. 2.2.5 ~~ William Alchin William was baptised at Dartford on 18th September 1803. 2.2.6 ~~ Thomas Alchin Thomas was baptised at Dartford on 20th April 1806. He married Jane; she was born at Merionethshire in 1796. Thomas and Jane had at least three children – Thomas (1832), Robert (1834) and Emma (1836). There is no surviving record of Thomas and his family in the 1841 census. The 1851 census records that Thomas was a tailor and he and his wife and their three children were living at 12 Marketplace, Dartford. The 1861 census records that Thomas was still a tailor and he and his wife were living alone at St Helens Place, Plumstead. Thomas may have died in 1864. 2.2.6.1 ~~ Thomas William Alchin Thomas was born at Dartford in 1832. The 1851 census records that Thomas was a printer’s labourer and he was living with his parents at 12 Marketplace, Dartford. Thomas married Abigail Moore in 1856 (Westminster 1856 March qtr Volume 1a Page 357); she was born at Bermondsey in 1830. Thomas and Abigail had at least five children – Thomas (1858), Abigail (1860), Alfred (1862), Frederick (1865) and Emma (1868). The 1871 census records that Thomas was a messenger and he and his wife and their four children were living at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. Thomas died in 1877 aged only 46 years (St Geo Han Sq 1877 September qtr Volume 1a Page 260). The 1881 census records that Abigail was a widowed office keeper and she and her two youngest children were still living at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. Abigail died shortly thereafter aged 51 years (St Geo Han Sq 1881 June qtr Volume 1a Page 301). 2.2.6.1.1 ~~ Thomas William Alchin Thomas was born at Westminster in 1858 (Westminster 1858 September qtr Volume 1a Page 357). The 1871 census records that Thomas was a messenger and he was living with his parents at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. Thomas married Mary Jane Butterfield in 1880 (St Geo Han Sq 1880 December qtr Volume 1a Page 826); she was born at Bemington, Hertfordshire in 1858. Thomas and Mary had at least one child – Thomas (1883). The 1891 census records that Thomas was an account book binder and he and his wife and their child were living at 31 Gladstone Street, Battersea. Thomas died in 1906 aged only 47 years (Wandsworth 1906 June qtr Volume 1d Page 258.. Mary died many years later in 1935 aged 77 years (W. Bromwich 1935 December qtr Volume 6b Page 697). 2.2.6.1.1.1 ~~ Thomas William Alchin Thomas was born at Westminster in 1883 (St Geo Han Sq 1883 December qtr Volume 1a Page 453). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 31 Gladstone Street, Battersea. Thomas married Annie; she was born in about 1884. Thomas died in 1960 aged 76 years (Birmingham 1960 March qtr Volume 9c Page 214). Annie died in 1966 aged 82 years (Birmingham 1966 March qtr Volume 9c Page 624). 2.2.6.1.2 ~~ Abigail Ann Alchin Abigail was born at Westminster in 1860 (Westminster 1860 March qtr Volume 1a Page 319). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. The 1881 census records that Abigail was an unmarried servant girl and she was working at Westminster. Abigail married William Richard Cuddeford soon afterwards (Westminster 1881 June qtr Volume 1a Page 891). Abigail died in Scotland in 1892 aged only 32 years (Blythswood 1892 Volume 644 Folio 70547). 2.2.6.1.3 ~~ Alfred Alchin Alfred was born at Westminster in 1862 (Westminster 1862 June qtr Volume 1a Page 315). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. The 1881 census records that Alfred was working as a waiter at the Whitechapel Club, 47 Parliament Street, Westminster. 2.2.6.1.4 ~~ Frederick Alchin Frederick was born at Westminster in 1865 (Westminster 1865 December qtr Volume 1a Page 352). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. The 1881 census records that Frederick was working as an office boy and he was living with his widowed mother at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. Frederick married Meriam Townshend; she was born at Westminster in 1870. Frederick and Meriam had at least two children – Miriam (1892) and Annie (1893). 2.2.6.1.4.1 ~~ Miriam Eleanor Alchin Miriam was born in London in 1892 (Lambeth 1892 June qtr Volume 1d Page 339). 2.2.6.1.4.2 ~~ Annie Isabel Alchin Annie was born in London in 1893 (Marylebone 1893 December qtr Volume 1a Page 519). 2.2.6.1.5 ~~ Emma Alchin Emma was born at Westminster in late 1868 (Westminster 1868 December qtr Volume 1a Page 352). The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. Emma’s father died in 1877 and it is clear that her mother was not well either. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 5 Cannon Row, Westminster. After the death of her mother a few weeks later Emma was raised by her uncle Robert Alchin who was a labourer at the Woolwich Arsenal. Emma married John James Frederick Sheppard at Kensington on 27th March 1891 (Fulham 1891 March qtr Volume 1a Page 497). John and Emma had at least four children – John (1891), Arthur (1895), Edith (1898) and Elsie (1899). The 1891 census records that John (Frederick) was an oilman’s assistant and the newly wed couple were living with his mother Caroline at 3 Rosaline Road, Fulham. The 1901 census records that John was an oilman’s manager and he and his wife and their four children were living at 144 Stein Road, East Ham. John’s mother was still living with them. Emma died in 1958 (possibly at Peterborough) aged 90 years. 2.2.6.1.5.1 ~~ John William Albert Sheppard John was born at Southwark on 17th December 1891. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 144 Stein Road, East Ham. John married Ada Elizabeth Grain on 25th December 1923; she was born at Oxford on 19th June 1890. John died on 18th June 1946 aged 54 years. Ada died at Croydon on 14th October 1963 aged 73 years. 2.2.6.1.5.2 ~~ Arthur Frederick Ernest Sheppard Arthur was born at Bermondsey on 24th February 1895. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 144 Stein Road, East Ham. Arthur died sometime after 1913. 2.2.6.1.5.3 ~~ Edith Winifred Sheppard Edith was born at Portsmouth Road, Milford near Hambledon in Surrey on 10th April 1898. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 144 Stein Road, East Ham. Edith married Arthur Schofield on 30th May 1918; he was born in 1893, possibly in Yorkshire. Arthur died in Peterborough in 1993 aged about 100 years. 2.2.6.1.5.4 ~~ Elsie Dorothy Sheppard Elsie was born at East Ham on 11th August 1899. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 144 Stein Road, East Ham. Elsie married Wilfred Ernest Colburn on2nd September 1922. 2.2.6.2 ~~ Robert Alchin Robert was born at Dartford in 1834. The 1851 census records that Robert was a baker and he was living with his parents at 12 Marketplace, Dartford. Robert married Margaret Moore in 1860 (Westminster 1860 June qtr Volume 1a Page 479); she was born in London in about 1837 and she may have been related to Abigail Moore the wife of her husband’s elder brother. The couple appear to have had no surviving children. The 1871 census records that Robert was a labourer in the Arsenal and he and his wife and her mother (Ann Moore who was born in London in 1806) were living at 15 Hellen Street, Woolwich. The 1881 census records that Robert was a labourer (probably in the Arsenal) and he and his wife were living at 4 Turrett Road, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Robert was a Royal Artillery pensioner and he and his wife were living at 7 Turrett Road, Plumstead. Robert died in 1914 aged 81 years (Woolwich 1914 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1400). Margaret died in 1919 aged 82 years (Woolwich 1919 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1845). 2.2.6.3 ~~ Emma Alchin Emma was born at Dartford in 1836. The 1851 census records that she was living with her parents at 12 Marketplace, Dartford. 2.2.7 ~~ James Alchin James was baptised at Dartford on 11th September 1808. 2.2.8 ~~ George Alchin George (was his name really John) was baptised at Dartford on 30th September 1810. 2.2.9 ~~ Richard Alchin Richard was baptised at Dartford on 28th March 1813. 2.2.10 ~~ John Alchin John was born at Dartford in about 1815. He married Charlotte Johnson at Dartford on 3rd August 1837 (Dartford 1837 September qtr Volume 5 Page 103); she was born at Canterbury in 1817. John and Charlotte had at least four children – Thomas (1838), James (1840), Edward (1846) and Charlotte (1849). Only the birth of their youngest child was registered. The 1841 census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Overy Street, Dartford. Also living with them was James Alchin who was born in Kent in about 1811. He may have been John’s brother or cousin. The 1851 census records that John was a labourer in an oil mill and he and his wife and their four children were living at Frog’s Island, Dartford. Also living with them were John’s widowed father Richard Alchin and Charlotte’s widowed mother Charlotte Johnson. Charlotte Alchin died in 1904 aged 85 years (Lewisham 1904 June qtr Volume 1d page 612). 2.2.10.1 ~~ Thomas William Alchin Thomas was born at Dartford in 1838 and it does not appear that his birth was registered. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Overy Street, Dartford. The 1851 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Frog’s Island, Dartford. The 1861 census records that Thomas was an unmarried carter and he was living at Upper Aston Lodge, Eynsford. Thomas married Ellen; she was born at Erith in 1841. The 1881 census records that Thomas was employed as a general carman. He and his wife were living alone at 48 Little Queen Street, Dartford. Ellen probably died in 1887 aged 49 years (Dartford 1887 September qtr Volume 2a Page 258). Thomas subsequently married Martha Todd in 1888 (Dartford 1888 December qtr Volume 2a Page 725); she was born at Dartford in 1850. Thomas and Martha had at least one child – Thomas (1888). The 1891 census records that Thomas was a labourer and he and his wife and their son were sharing a house with his nephew (?) Albert Alchin at 39 Elm Street, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Thomas was a general labourer and he and his wife and their only child were living at 120 Station Road, Plumstead. Thomas may have died in 1912 aged 73 years (Stroud 1912 June qtr Volume 6a Page 418). 2.2.10.1.1 ~~ Thomas Albert Alchin Thomas was born at Dartford in 1888 (his birth was not registered). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 39 Elm Street, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 120 Station Road, Plumstead. Thomas married Emily L. Neighbour in 1912 (Croydon 1912 June qtr Volume 2a Page 638); she was born at Croydon in 1892. Thomas and Emily had at least ten children – Albert (1912), Dolly (1914), George (1915), Ellen (1917), Daisy (1919), William (1921), Herbert (1928), John (1930) and Elsie (1933).
2.2.10.2 ~~ James Alchin James was born at Dartford in about 1840 and his birth does not appear to have been registered either. The 1841 census records that the toddler was living with his family at Overy Street, Dartford. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Frog’s Island, Dartford. James married Mary Ann Lolly at Woolwich on 10th June 1861 (Greenwich 1861 June qtr Volume 1d Page 832); she was born at Ramsgate in 1840. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Curate, Rev’d Brook and the witnesses were A. (possibly Adam) Alchin and Ann Alchin. James was a labourer of Brewer Street, Woolwich (under 21 years of age) and he was the son of John Alchin, also a labourer. Mary was of age and she was also living at Brewer Street. Her father was Richard Lolly, a labourer. James and Mary had at least eight children – Walter (1862), Albert (1864), Amy (1866), Charlotte (1868), Edward (1871), George (1873), Ernest (1876) and Sarah (1880). The 1871 census records that James was a labourer and he and his wife and their five children were living at 94 Raglan Road, Plumstead. The 1881 census records that James was an Ordnance Department Foreman and he and his wife and six of their children were living at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. The 1891 census records that James was a foreman of labourers and he and his wife and four of their children were living at the Foreman’s Quarters, Royal Arsenal, Plumstead. Mary died in 1895 aged 55 years (Woolwich 1895 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1030). James subsequently married Jane Hardingham in 1896 (Woolwich 1896 September qtr Volume 1d Page 2213); she was born at Kelvedow, Essex in 1837. The 1901 census records that James was a “pensioner foreman in Woolwich A.B. Dept. He and his wife were living at Myrtle Villa, Erith. James died in 1905 aged 64 years (Woolwich 1905 June qtr Volume 1d Page 2213). Jane may have died in 1909 aged 71 years (Milton 1909 September qtr Volume 2a Page 473). 2.2.10.2.1 ~~ Walter James Alchin Henry was born at Woolwich in 1862 (Greenwich 1862 June qtr Volume 1d Page 667). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 94 Raglan Road, Plumstead. The 1881 census records that Walter was a patient at a hospital at Caterham. Walter died in 1899 aged only 36 years (Dartford 1899 June qtr Volume 2a Page 311). 2.2.10.2.2 ~~ Albert Adam Alchin Albert was born at Woolwich in 1864 (Greenwich 1864 June qtr Volume 1d Page 691). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 94 Raglan Road, Plumstead. The 1881 census records that he was employed as a labourer and he was living with his parents at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. Albert married Alice Louisa Good in 1887 (Woolwich 1887 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1114); she was born at Forest Hill in 1868. The 1891 census records that Albert was a general labourer and he and his wife were living in three rooms of a house at 39 Elm Street, Plumstead. Albert’s uncle and aunt (Thomas and Martha Alchin) had another three rooms in the same house. Also lodging with Albert and Alice was 17 years old Charles Alchin who was a painter of Aldershot, Hampshire. It is not known at this stage what relationship Charles had with the other occupants but he must have been at least a cousin. The 1901 census records that Albert was employed as a “trimmers overlooker” and he and his wife were living at Myrtle Villa, Erith. They had no surviving children and two of Alice’s nieces were living with them (Helen Frances Good who was born at Greenwich in 1891 and Cissey Good who was born at Bromley in 1896. 2.2.10.2.3 ~~ Amy Ann Alchin Amy was born at Plumstead on 19th October 1866 (Lewisham 1866 December qtr Volume 1d Page 839) and she was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 17th March 1867. The 1871 census records that the young girl (named incorrectly as Mary A. Alchin) was living with her parents at 94 Raglan Road, Plumstead. Amy is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1881 census. She was a domestic servant living with (and possibly working for) her aunt and uncle Richard and Sarah Minter at 8 Vicarage Lane, St Lawrence. Amy may have married either Lewis Buckle or James Dollarmore in 1896 (Woolwich 1896 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1881). 2.2.10.2.4 ~~ Charlotte Margaret Alchin Charlotte was born at Plumstead on 3rd September 1868 (Woolwich 1868 December qtr Volume 1d Page 884) and she was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 27th September 1868. The 1871 census records that the young girl (named as Margaret) was living with her parents at 94 Raglan Road, Plumstead. The 1881 census records that Charlotte was a school girl and she was living with her family at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. She married Arthur Weller in 1890 (Woolwich 1890 September qtr Volume 1d Page 1789); he was born at Greenwich in 1866. Arthur and Charlotte had at least two children – Sidney (1894) and Ivy (1897). The 1901 census records that Arthur was a storeman for an iron and steel foundry. He and his wife and their two children were living at Ivy Villa, Sydney Road, Erith. Also living with them was Charlotte’s unmarried brother Ernest Alchin. Their eldest son died when his ship was torpedoed and sunk in 1918. At the time Arthur and Charlotte were still living at Ivy Villa, Erith. 2.2.10.2.4.1 ~~ Sidney George James Weller Sidney was born at Plumstead in 1894 (Woolwich 1894 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1284). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Ivy Villa, Sydney Road, Erith. Sidney joined the merchant marine as an engineer. He was serving as Third Engineer of the SS “Sea Gull” (registered in London) when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on 16th March 1918. Sidney was only 23 years old at the time of his death. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial to merchant seaman in London. 2.2.10.2.4.2 ~~ Ivy Mary Gladys Weller Ivy was born at Plumstead in 1897 (Woolwich 1897 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1300). The 1901 census records that Ivy was living with her family at Ivy Villa, Sydney Road, Erith. 2.2.10.2.5 ~~ Edward John Alchin Edward was born at Plumstead on 30th March 1871 (Woolwich 1871 June qtr Volume 1d Page 900). The 1871 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with his family at 94 Raglan Road, Plumstead. Edward was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene on 9th July 1871. The 1881 census records that Edward was a school boy and he was living with his family at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. The 1891 census records that Edward was working as a ledger keeper. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at in the Foreman’s Quarters, Royal Arsenal, Plumstead. Edward married Margaret Ann Killick in 1898 (Dartford 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 951); she was born at Northfleet in 1867. The 1901 census records that Edward was employed as a foreman of government stores. He and his wife and his brother in law (Ernest Killick) were living at 1A Elm Street, Plumstead. Margaret died in 1941 aged 73 years (Luton 1941 December qtr Volume 3b Page 847). Edward died in 1950 aged 79 years (Uckfield 1950 September qtr Volume 5h Page 377). 2.2.10.2.6 ~~ George Henry Alchin George was born at Plumstead on 13th September 1873 (Woolwich 1873 December qtr Volume 1d Page 907) and he was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 28th December 1873. The 1881 census records that George was a school boy and he was living with his family at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. The 1891 census records that George was a painter and he was living with his parents in the Foreman’s Quarters, Royal Arsenal, Plumstead. George married Alice Louisa Roberts in 1899 (Medway 1899 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1339); she was born in London in 1877. The 1901 census records that George was a Police Constable and he and his wife were living at 17 Grenfell Street, Kensington. Alice probably died in London in 1924 aged 47 years (Marylebone 1924 December qtr Volume 1a Page 545). George may have died in 1954 aged 80 years (Wandsworth 1954 March qtr Volume 5d Page 829). 2.2.10.2.7 ~~ Ernest William Alchin Ernest was born at Plumstead in 1876 (Woolwich 1876 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1099). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. The 1891 census records that Ernest was a bakers driver and he was living with his parents at the Foreman’s Quarters, Royal Arsenal, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that he was employed as a railway booking clerk. Ernest was unmarried and he was living with his married sister Charlotte Weller at Ivy Villa, Sydney Road, Erith. Ernest married a woman surnamed Hill in 1912 (Woolwich 1912 December qtr Volume 6c Page 512). Ernest died in 1952 aged 75 years (Woolwich 1952 December qtr Volume 5d Page 1042). 2.2.10.2.8 ~~ Sarah E. Alchin Sarah was born at Plumstead in 1880. The 1881 census records that the toddler was living with her family at 94 Maxey Road, Plumstead. The 1891 census records that Sarah was living with her parents in the Foreman’s Quarters, Royal Arsenal, Plumstead. 2.2.10.3 ~~ Edward Alchin Edward was born at his parent’s home at Overy Street, Dartford on 31st December 1846 (Dartford 1847 March qtr Volume 5 Page 100). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Frog’s Island, Dartford. There is no sign of Edward (or his parents) in the 1861 or 1871 census. Edward married Sarah Holland or Bradford (it seems unclear whether Sarah had been married previously or her mother had remarried) in 1878 (Poplar 1878 December qtr Volume 1c Page 1272); Sarah was born at Northfleet in 1851 and she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Holland. Edward and Sarah had at least three children – George (1881), John (1883) and Herbert (1887). The 1881 census records that Edward was a labourer and he and his wife and son were living with his parents in law at 2 Three Mill Lane, Bromley. The 1891 census records that Edward was employed as a stoker and he and his wife and their three sons were living at 60 Stephens Road, West Ham in Essex. The 1901 census records that Edward was employed as a general labourer. He and his wife and their three sons were living at 50 Corporation Street, West Ham. Sarah probably died in 1920 aged 69 years (W Ham 1920 March qtr Volume 4a Page 115). Edward died in 1933 aged 86 years (W Ham 1933 September qtr Volume 4a Page 139). 2.2.10.3.1 ~~ George Thomas Alchin George was born at Bromley in 1881 (Poplar 1881 March qtr Volume 1c Page 726). The 1881 census records that the 7 week old infant was living with his parents and grandparents at 2 Three Mill Lane, Bromley. The 1891 census records that George was a school boy and he was living with his family at 60 Stephens Road, West Ham. The 1901 census records that George was employed as a chemical labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at 50 Corporation Street, West Ham. George married Gertrude Maud Schofield in 1903 (W Ham June qtr Volume 4a Page 229) and they had at least two children – George and Lilly. George died in 1958 aged 76 years (Hendon 1958 March qtr Volume 5a Page 651). Gertrude may have died at Totnes in 1959 aged 80 years (Totnes 1959 March qtr Volume 7a Page 938). Note - George and Gertrude are the grandparents of Colin Allchin who maintains the Allchin family website on the internet. 2.2.10.3.2 ~~ John Edward Alchin John was born at Bromley in 1883 (Poplar 1883 March qtr Volume 1c Page 724). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 60 Stephens Road, West Ham. The 1901 census records that John was employed as a clerk in the oil and colour trade. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at 50 Corporation Street, West Ham. John probably married in 1910 (W Ham 1910 December qtr Volume 4a Page 459). 2.2.10.3.3 ~~ Herbert William Alchin Herbert was born at West Ham in 1887 (W Ham 1887 March qtr Volume 4a Page 180). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 60 Stephens Road, West Ham. The 1901 census records that Herbert was employed as a cork sorter and he was living with his parents at 50 Corporation Street, West Ham. Herbert married a woman surnamed Jones in 1914 (Ipswich 1914 September qtr Volume 4a Page 2252). Herbert probably died in 1971 aged 84 years (Redbridge 1971 March qtr Volume 5d Page 1782). 2.2.10.4 ~~ Charlotte Margaret Alchin Charlotte was born at Dartford in 1849 (Dartford 1849 September qtr Volume 5 Page 93). The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Frog’s Island, Dartford. The 1861 census records that Charlotte was a servant girl for George and Elizabeth Bonner at West Hill, Dartford. Charlotte married Mark James Wilson in 1867 (Lewisham 1867 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1155); he was born at Blackheath in 1841 the son of Andrew and Jane Wilson. Mark and Charlotte had at least nine children – James (1868), Mary (1870), William (1872), Arthur (1875), Charlotte (1877), Rosina (1880), Alice (1883), Florence (1885) and Ada (1888). The 1871 census records that Charlotte and her two eldest children were sharing a house with her brother James Alchin and his family at Raglan Road, Plumstead. There is no sign of her husband Mark and he must have been away working. There is also no sign of Mark or his family in the 1881 census. The 1891 census records that Mark was a bricklayer and he and his wife and seven of their children were living at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Mark was a bricklayer and he and his wife, three of their children and a granddaughter were living at 34 Sydney Road, Erith. 2.2.10.4.1 ~~ James A. Wilson James was born at Plumstead in 1868. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at Raglan Road, Plumstead. He is not recorded in any subsequent English census and he probably died in childhood. 2.2.10.4.2 ~~ Mary Ann Wilson Mary was born at Plumstead in 1870 (Woolwich 1870 September qtr Volume 1d Page 889). The 1871 census records that the 6 month old infant was living with her extended family at Raglan Road, Plumstead. The 1891 census records that Mary was a dress maker and she was living with her parents at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. 2.2.10.4.3 ~~ William T. Wilson William was born at Plumstead in 1872. He was not recorded in the 1881 census nor was he recorded with his family in the 1891 census. William married Lucy E.; she was born at Greenwich in 1875. The 1901 census records that William and his brother Arthur ran a printer and stationery business. He and his wife shared a house with his brother and his family (probably above their shop) at 51 Delafield Road, Charlton in London. At that stage the couple had no surviving children. 2.2.10.4.4 ~~ Arthur Joseph Wilson Arthur was born at Plumstead in 1875 (Woolwich 1875 June qtr Volume 1d Page 994). The 1891 census records that Arthur was living with his parents at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. Arthur married Sarah Ann J. McNeill; she was born in India in 1871. Arthur and Sarah had at least one child – Gladys (1901). The 1901 census records that Arthur and his brother William ran a printer and stationery business. He and his wife and their baby daughter shared a house with his brother and his wife (probably above their shop) at 51 Delafield Road, Charlton in London. 2.2.10.4.4.1 ~~ Gladys A.M. Wilson Gladys was born at Charlton in February 1901. The 1901 census records that the two month old infant was living with her family at 51 Delafield Road, Charlton. 2.2.10.4.5 ~~ Charlotte Margaret Wilson Charlotte was born at Plumstead in 1877 (Woolwich 1877 September qtr Volume 1d Page 1066). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. Charlotte married a man named Vincent and they had at least one child – Dorothy (1897). The 1901 census records that Charlotte was a charwoman and she was living alone at 8 Gaynor Street, Southwark. This may have been a boarding house based on the number of people staying there. Charlotte’s daughter was living with her grandparents while there is no sign of her husband – perhaps he was a merchant seaman and he was away at sea. 2.2.10.4.5.1 ~~ Dorothy Vincent Dorothy was born at Southwark in 1897. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her grandparents at 34 Sydney Road, Erith. 2.2.10.4.6 ~~ Rosina Ann Wilson Rosina was born at Plumstead in 1880 (Woolwich 1880 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1153). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Rosina was living with her parents at 34 Sydney Road, Erith. 2.2.10.4.7 ~~ Alice Maud Wilson Alice was born at Plumstead in 1883 (Woolwich 1883 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1226). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Alice was an assistant in a stationer’s shop and she was living with her parents at 34 Sydney Road, Erith. 2.2.10.4.8 ~~ Florence Amy Wilson Florence was born at Plumstead in 1885 (Woolwich 1885 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1253). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. The 1901 census records that Florence was an apprentice in a draper’s shop and she was living with her parents at 34 Sydney Road, Erith. 2.2.10.4.9 ~~ Ada Emily Wilson Ada was born at Plumstead in 1888 (Woolwich 1888 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1223). The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 45 Paget Road, Plumstead. 3. ~~ John Alchin This John Alchin was probably born at Dartford or Wilmington in about 1720. He married an unknown woman and they had at least three children – Thomas (1752), Sarah (1755) and James (1757). 3.1 ~~ Thomas Alchin Thomas was baptised at Wilmington on 7th June 1752. He married Ann and they had at least two children – John (1774) and Ann (1775). 3.1.1 ~~ John William Alchin. John was baptised at Dartford on 27th February 1774. John married Lydia Gregory at Shoreham on 10th December 1797. John and Lydia had at least three children – Caroline (1798), George (1802) and John (1805). Lydia died in 1807 aged about 30 years and she was buried at Wilmington on 30th June 1807. The 1841 census records that John was a widowed agricultural labourer and he was living with his spinster daughter Caroline and his young grandson John at Wilmington. John may have died in 1857 when he would have been 83 years old. 3.1.1.1 ~~ Caroline Alchin Caroline was baptised at Wilmington on 18th September 1798. It appears that she never married. The 1841 census records that Caroline was unmarried and she was living with her widowed father at Wilmington. The 1861 census records that she was a spinster and she was living with her married nephew John Alchin at Wilmington Street, Wilmington. The 1871 census records that she was still living with her nephew John at Prospect Place, Broad Lane, Wilmington. 3.1.1.2 ~~ George Alchin George was baptised at Wilmington on 3rd October 1802. George married Martha; she was born in Kent in about 1810. George and Martha had at least and they had at least six children – Caroline (1831), Martha (1833), John (1835), Sophia (1839), Mary (1840) and Llewellyn (1842). Only the birth of his youngest child was registered. The 1841 census records that George was a gardener and he and his wife and four of their children were living at 34 Duck Street, Lee. Martha probably died in 1842 aged about 32 years (Lewisham 1842 September qtr Volume 5 Page 208). The 1851 census records that George was a widowed gardener and he and his two daughters were living at 12 Camden Row, Lee. The 1861 census records that George was a widowed gardener and his eldest daughter were lodging with Elizabeth Cuthbert at 4 Camden Road, Lewisham. 3.1.1.2.1 ~~ Caroline Alchin Caroline was born in Kent in 1831. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 34 Duck Street, Lee. 3.1.1.2.2 ~~ Martha Alchin Martha was born in Kent in 1833. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 34 Duck Street, Lee. Martha may have married in 1856. 3.1.1.2.3 ~~ John James Alchin John was born at Lee near Blackheath in 1835, allegedly the son of George Alchin. The 1841 census records that John was living with his aunt and grandfather at Wilmington. There is no surviving record of John in the 1851 census. John married Mary Ann Amos at St Mary’s church, Lewisham on 15th December 1858 (Lewisham 1858 December qtr Volume 1d Page 955); she was born at Bexley Heath in 1836 the daughter of James Amos a labourer. At the time of his marriage John was a bricklayer of Blackheath and his father was stated to be George Alchin, gardener. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d G. Ottey and the witnesses were Mary Ann Alchin and Thomas Henry Wilde. John and Mary had at least ten children – John (1860), Martha (1862), George (1863), Thomas (1866), Adam (1869), Llewellyn (1872), Mary (1875), Joseph (1877), Edith (1879) and Kate (1881). The 1861 census records that John was a bricklayer and he and his wife and their eldest son were living at Wilmington Street, Wilmington. Also living with the family was John’s maiden aunt and a boarder. The 1871 census records that John was a bricklayer and he and his wife, his maiden aunt and his five children were living at Prospect Place, Broad Lane, Wilmington. John appears to have made steady progress through society and certainly he began to accumulate some wealth. The 1881 census records that John was a builder and gravel merchant employing 14 men. He and his wife and their nine children were living at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. The 1901 census records that John was a retired builder and he and his wife and their two unmarried children were still living at ‘The Brent.’ John died in 1903 aged 67 years (Dartford 1903 June qtr Volume 2a Page 292). Mary died in 1924 aged 87 years (Dartford 1924 June qtr Volume 2a Page 716). Their grandson Geoffrey was a diplomat who was knighted. 3.1.1.2.3.1 ~~ John T.G. Alchin John was born at Wilmington in 1860 but there is no surviving record of his birth registration. The 1861 census records that the infant was living with his family at Wilmington Street, Wilmington. The 1881 census records that John was working as a bricklayer, probably for his father. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. There is no further record of John in English records. 3.1.1.2.3.2 ~~ Martha Caroline Alchin Martha was born at Wilmington in 1862 (Dartford 1862 March qtr Volume 2a Page 282). The 1881 census records that Martha was working as a domestic servant. She was unmarried and she was living with her parents at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. 3.1.1.2.3.3 ~~ George William Alchin George was born at Wilmington in 1863 (Dartford 1863 December qtr Volume 2a Page 307). The 1881 census records that George was working as a bricklayer and he was living with his parents at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. Like his elder brother and sister this is the last time that he appears in English records. George probably migrated to the United States aboard the vessel SS ‘Gallia” arriving in New York in April 1884. 3.1.1.2.3.4 ~~ Thomas Cuthbert Alchin Thomas was born at Wilmington in 1866 (Dartford 1866 September qtr Volume 2a Page 330). The 1881 census records that he was employed as amercer’s clerk and he was living with his parents at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. Thomas married Margaret Beaney in 1894 (Medway 1894 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1053); she was born at Rochester in 1866. Thomas and Margaret had at least two children – Geoffrey (1895) and Mildred (1899). The 1901 census records that Thomas was a manager of a porter (a type of dark ale) works and he and his wife and their two children were living at Longfield near Dartford. Thomas died in 1931 aged 65 years (Dartford 1931 September qtr Volume 2a Page 703). Margaret died in 1948 aged 81 years (Dartford 1948 September qtr Volume 5b Page 400). 3.1.1.2.3.4.1 ~~ Geoffrey Cuthbert Alchin (Sir) Geoffrey was born at Longfield in 1895 (Dartford 1895 June qtr Volume 2a Page 535). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Longfield. Geoffrey later became a diplomat and in 1949 he was ‘envoy extraordinary’ to France. He was knighted for his services. Geoffrey died in 1968 aged 72 years (Dartford 1968 March qtr Volume 5f Page 391). 3.1.1.2.3.4.2 ~~ Mildred Mary M. Alchin Mildred was born at Longfield in 1899 (Dartford 1899 September qtr Volume 2a Page 588). The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at Longfield. Mary married Percy E. Carr in 1922 (Deptford 1922 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1347). 3.1.1.2.3.5 ~~ Adam Alchin Adam was born at Wilmington in 1869 (Dartford 1869 March qtr Volume 2a Page 400). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at “The Brent’, Dartford. Thereafter, like several of his brothers and sisters, Adam disappears from English records. 3.1.1.2.3.6 ~~ Llewellyn Alchin Llewellyn was born at Wilmington in 1872 (Dartford 1872 June qtr Volume 2a Page 377). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at “The Brent’, Dartford. Thereafter, like several of his brothers and sisters, Llewellyn disappears from English records. 3.1.1.2.3.7 ~~ Mary Ann Alchin Mary was born at Dartford in 1875 (Dartford 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 393). The 1881 census records that Mary was a school girl and she was living with her family at “The Brent’, Dartford. 3.1.1.2.3.8 ~~ Joseph Alchin Joseph was born at Dartford in 1877 (Dartford 1877 December qtr Volume 2a Page 426). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. The 1901 census records that Joseph was employed as a clerk. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at ‘The Brent’. 3.1.1.2.3.9 ~~ Edith Alchin Edith was born at Dartford in 1879 (Dartfprd 1879 December qtr Volume 2a Page 433). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. 3.1.1.2.3.10 ~~ Kate Rose Alchin Kate was born at Dartford in 1881 (Dartford 1881 September qtr Volume 2a Page 448). The 1901 census records that Kate was an unmarried school teacher. She was living with her parents at ‘The Brent’, Dartford. 3.1.1.2.4 ~~ Sophia Alchin Sophia was born at Lee in 1839. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 34 Duck Street, Lee. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed father at 12 Camden Row, Lee. The 1861 census records that Sophia was a servant and she and her father were lodging with Elizabeth Cuthbert at 12 Camden Road, Lewisham. Sophia probably married in 1865 (Dartford 1865 March qtr Volume 2a Page 367). 3.1.1.2.5 ~~ Mary Ann Alchin Mary was born at Lee in late 1840. Llewellyn died aged about 18 months in 1843 (Newington 1843 December qtr Volume 4 Page 245). 3.1.1.3 ~~ John Alchin John was born at Wilmington in late 1804 or early 1805 and he was baptised at Wilmington on 3rd February 1805. John married Sophia; she was born at Deptford in 1813. The 1851 census records that John was a gardener and he and his wife were living at Lee in outer London. The 1861 census records that John was still a gardener and he and his wife were living at 6 Royal Oak Place, Lee. John died in 1866 aged about 60 years (Lewisham 1866 March qtr Volume 1d Page 579). Sophia died in 1881 aged 67 years (Lewisham 1881 March qtr Volume 1d Page 651). 3.1.2 ~~ Ann Alchin Ann was baptised at Dartford on 31st December 1775. 3.2 ~~ Sarah Alchin Sarah was baptised at Wilmington on 16th February 1755. 3.3 ~~ James Alchin James was baptised at Wilmington on 24th April 1757. |
