Volume 5 – Kent and Beyond by Steve Green Part 6 – Other Alchin Families of Interest 6c. The Descendants of Francis and Catherine Alchin of London 1. ~~ Francis Alchin This man is a mystery – was he born in 1764, the son of John Alchin and Esther Loader of Meopham, Kent (see Part 2 paragraph 1.1.1.2.1.6). A web-site dedicated to the London book trade claims that he was but the Francis Alchin who died in 1832 also appears to be their child. What we know of this man is that he was apprenticed as a bookbinder to Charles Heath on 3rd November 1778. He was released from his indentures by the courts after his master refused to release him. Francis probably married Catherine Dove at the church of St Andrew by the Wardrobe, London on 22nd May 1788 (this was probably why he sought his freedom from his indentures as apprentices were not allowed to marry without the permission of their masters). Francis and Catherine had at least four children – Thomas (1789), Sarah (1792), John (1794) and William (1795). Francis joined the Free Stationers Company on 7th April 1789. He took six apprentices between 1792 and 1802 when he was living at 22 Warwick Court, Newgate Street. The following year his son Thomas was apprenticed to him as a book binder. By 1817 Francis had become a wine and spirit merchant at 14 Lime Street, London. Francis supposedly died in 1825/6. 1.1 ~~ Thomas Alchin It is not known when Thomas was born but it was probably in the 1780’s or thereabouts. If he was the son (as it seems) of Francis Alchin and Catherine Dove then he was baptised at St Ann’s church, Blackfriars in London on 31st May 1789. He was apprenticed to his father as a bookbinder in 1803 and was freed from his indentures in 1810. Thomas married Ann Guelph at an unknown date. We know virtually nothing about Ann. Thomas and Ann had at least five children – Louisa (1812), Francis (1814), Charles (1815), Emma (1816) and Jane (1822). Ann almost certainly survived her husband. His will dated 1826 provides a link with the descendants of John Alchin and Esther Loader but the exact relationship has not yet been determined. The common link between the families is a property located in King Street, St Giles known by the name or the sign of the Two Spurs which Thomas occupied prior to his death and which his widow Ann still occupied in 1832. This property belonged to Francis Allchin, seemingly the son of John Allchin and Esther Loader, at the time of his death in 1832:
What we also know from Thomas’ will was that his wife was still alive but unfortunately he does not name her in his will (possibly her name was Ann Guelph if Charles Alchin of Victoria was their son). Thomas provided bequests to his five children – Francis Alfred, Charles, Louisa, Emma and Jane Ann. We also know from his will that none of his children had reached adulthood at the time of his death in 1826. Thomas was a Dealer in wine and spirits of King Street, St Giles. He seems to have been quite a wealthy man owning a number of public houses and other property in London. The Francis Alchin who married Mary Ann Howell in Oxford may have been his eldest son mentioned in the will below. Their second son married the daughter of a wine and spirit merchant of Oxford. Thomas’ will is reproduced below in its entirety:
1.1.1 ~~ Louisa Alchin Louisa was born at London on 20th July 1812 and who was baptised at Christ’s church, Greyfriars in London on 27th September 1812. When her father died in 1826 Louisa and her sister Emma were bequeathed a half share in a public house known as “The Ship” in Wormwood Street, Bishopsgate. Louisa may have married in 1844 (Worcester 1844 December qtr Volume 18 Page 689). 1.1.2 ~~ Francis Alfred Alchin Francis was born at London in 1814. From his wedding certificate it seems probable that he was the son of Thomas Alchin (a wines and spirits merchant of London) and Mary his wife but there is no surviving record of his baptism. A Francis Alfred Alchin who was below the age of 21 years was left property located at 45 King Street, St Giles in the Fields by his father Thomas Alchin in 1826. According to Thomas’ will he had four other children – Charles, Louisa, Emma and Jane. Francis married Mary Ann Griffith Howell at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Oxford on 21st February 1841 (Oxford 1841 March qtr Volume 16 Page 125); she was probably born at Bath, Somersetshire in 1821 and she was the daughter of the late John Griffith Howell. The service was performed by Rev’d J. R. Hall and the witnesses were John and Edith Dewe. The wedding certificate records that Francis’ occupation was a victualler and his father was the late Thomas Alchin. Francis and Mary Ann probably had at least four children - Charles (1842), William (1843), Robert (1845) and Frederick (1850).– the three eldest were born at Oxford and the youngest was born in the south in Sussex. The 1851 census records that Francis was a commercial clerk and he and his wife and their three children were living at 2 Emmerson Place, Southwark. Francis probably died in London in 1851 aged in his mid 30’s (St Saviour 1851 June qtr Volume 4 Page 390). The 1861 census records that Mary was widowed and she was living with her youngest son and her mother (Elizabeth Howell who was born at Bath in 1797) at Billastyn Road, Bow. The 1871 census records that Mary was an annuitant and she was living with her unmarried son at 28 Lichfield Road, Mile End. 1.1.2.1 ~~ Charles Alfred Howell Alchin Charles was born at Oxford in early 1842 (Oxford 1842 March qtr Volume 9c Page 89). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Emmerson Place, Southwark. The 1861 census records that Charles wa san assistant clockmaker and he was living at 61 The Strand, Westminster. The 1871 census records that Charles was an assistant clockmaker and he was living with his widowed mother at 28 Lichfield Road, Mile End. Charles married Charlotte Jane Baines at Gillingham on 2nd October 1875 (Medway 1875 December qtr Volume 2a Page 801); she was born at Wrotham in 1842 according to the 1881 census. They do not appear to have had any surviving children. The 1881 census also records that Charles was a watch maker’s assistant and he and his wife were living at 25 Sidney Road, Lambeth. Charlotte may have died in 1900 aged “62” years (Wandsworth 1900 March qtr Volume 1d Page 506). The 1901 census records that Charles was widowed and he was still employed as a watchmaker’s assistant. He and his twin nephew and niece, Basil and Gwladys Alchin, were living at 27 Bromfelde Road, Clapham. Charles died in 1915 aged 74 years (Headington 1915 March qtr Volume 3a Page 1653). 1.1.2.2 ~~ William Thomas Howell Alchin William was born in the parish of St Peter le Bailey, Oxford in 1843 (Oxford 1843 September qtr Volume 16 Page *41). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Emmerson Place, Southwark. The 1861 census records that William was a student and he was living with his uncle and aunt (Robert and Emma Marshall) at 21 Beaumont Street, Oxford. William received his Bachelor of Music from Oxford University in 1869. William was the organist of St John’s College, Oxford from 1875 to 1883. He was the conductor of the Oxford Choral Society and an examiner for the Royal Academy of Music in 1881. William composed a sacred cantata and other pieces of music. William married Sarah Tame at Oxford in 1871 (Oxford 1871 December qtr Volume 3a Page 1123). Sarah was born at Oxford in 1844 and she was the daughter of Thomas Tame, a wine and spirit merchant of 47 Broad Street, Oxford (note that the will of Thomas Alchin, probably the grandfather of William Alchin, indicates that he too was a wine and spirit merchant). William and Sarah had at least five children – Gerald (1873), Mabel (1874) and twins Basil and Gwladys (1878). The 1881 census records that William was a Professor of Music and he and his family were living at his father in law’s old house at 47 Broad Street, Oxford. William died at Oxford on 8th January 1883 aged 39 years (Oxford 1883 March qtr Volume 3a Page 507). The 1901 census records that Sarah was widowed and she was “living on her own means”. She was still living with one of her unmarried daughters at 47 Broad Street, Oxford. Sarah probably died in 1927 aged 83 years (Oxford 1927 March qtr Volume 3a Page 1097). Two years later her home at Oxford was torn down to make way for the construction of the New Bodleian Library. 1.1.2.2.1 ~~ Gerald Alfred J. Alchin Gerald was born at Oxford in 1873 (Oxford 1873 March qtr Volume 3a Page 686). The 1881 census records that Gerald was a school boy and he was living with his parents at Oxford. There is no record of Gerald in the 1901 English census and he must have migrated as there is no record of either his death or marriage in England. 1.1.2.2.2 ~~ Mabel Mary Alchin Mabel was born at Oxford in 1874 (Oxford 1874 December qtr Volume 3a Page 653). The 1881 census records that Mabel was a school girl and she was living with her parents at Oxford. The 1901 census records that Mabel was unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother at 47 Broad Street, Oxford. Mabel never married and she died in 1917 aged 43 years (Headington 1917 December qtr Volume 3a Page 1080). 1.1.2.2.3 ~~ Basil Charles Alchin Basil and his twin sister Gwladys were born at Oxford in 1878 (Oxford 1878 June qtr Volume 3a Page 699). The 1881 census records that he was living with his parents at Oxford. The 1901 census records that Basil was a church organist and he and his twin sister lived with their Uncle Charles at 27 Bromfelde Road, Clapham. Basil gained his Master of Arts degree from Oxford University. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Music (FRCM) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO). He studied at the Royal College of Music and served as Director of Music at Cheltenham Girls School. He later became a professor at the Royal College of Music. Basil served in the British Army during World War One and he reached the rank of Captain. He later wrote several pieces of devotional music for organ. Basil died in 1957 aged 78 years (Wells 1957 March qtr Volume 7c Page 257). 1.1.2.2.4 ~~ Gwladys Marguerite Alchin Gwladys and her twin brother Basil were born at Oxford in 1878 (Oxford 1878 June qtr Volume 3a Page 699). The 1881 census records that she was living with her parents at Oxford. The 1901 census records that Gwladys was employed as a typewriter and shorthand clerk and she and her twin brother lived with their Uncle Charles at 27 Bromfelde Road, Clapham. Records show that Gwladys (she was unmarried) was the owner of the old family home at 47 Broad Street, Oxford from 1927 until its demoltition in 1929. She lived into extreme old age. Gwladys died in 1972 aged 94 years (Oxford 1972 December qtr Volume 6b Page 2759). 1.1.2.3 ~~ Robert Howell Alchin Robert was born at Oxford in 1845 (Oxford 1845 September qtr Volume 16 page 77). Robert probably died in London in 1846 aged 1 year (St Pancras 1846 September qtr Volume 1 Page 246). 1.1.2.4 ~~ Frederick Howell Alchin Frederick was born at Hoxton, Sussex in 1850 (St Leonard 1850 March qtr Volume 2 Page 408). He was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Shoreditch in London on 16th June 1850. The 1851 census records that the toddler was living with his family at 2 Emmerson Place, Southwark. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at Billastyn Road, Bow in London. Frederick died at Oxford in 1863 aged 13 years (Headington 1863 September qtr Volume 3a Page 393). 1.1.3 ~~ Charles Alchin Charles was born at Bloomsbury in London in 1815. Charles married Mary Jane Lemon in the early 1840’s. Mary was born at Bloomsbury in about 1814 and she was the daughter of Samuel Lemon and Mary Dykes. Charles and Mary had at least seven children – Alfred (1842), Jane (1845), Ellen (1846), Alice (1851), Frederick (1853), Louisa (1855) and Walter (1857). The 1851 census records that Charles was a harness maker and Mary was a milliner. The couple and their four children were living at 9 White Cross Lane, Holywell (Shoreditch) in London. Charles and his family arrived in Victoria aboard the “Ann Milne” in June 1853 as assisted migrants. The family initially settled in Melbourne but they later seem to have moved on to the goldfields around Ballarat. Charles established a business as a saddler and leather merchant which was carried on by his sons and grandsons. Charles died in Victoria on 9th September 1882 (Vic 1882/7638) aged about 66 years and he was buried in the Old Ballarat Cemetery on 11th September 1882. Mary died at Drummond Street, Ballarat in 1885 (Vic1885/ 4019) aged 71 years and she was buried with her husband in the Old Ballarat Cemetery on 20th April 1885. Despite the number of Charles’ descendants who were born at Ballarat it does not appear that there are any Alchins still living at Ballarat at the present time. 1.1.3.1 ~~ Alfred Francis Alchin Alfred was born at Oxford in 1842 (Oxford 1842 June qtr Volume 16 Page 96) and he was given the same names (but in different order) as his uncle who was also raising a family at Oxford at about the same time. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 9 White Cross Lane, Shoreditch. Alfred migrated to Australia with his family aboard the “Ann Milne” in June 1853 at the height of the gold rush. Alfred married Maria Fenetta Sheridan in 1865 (Vic 1865/2165). Maria was the daughter of Walter Sheridan and Mary Webster. Alfred and Maria had at least four children – Charles (1866), Lillian (1868), Mary (1870) and Mabel (1872). Most of their children were born in the Sebastopol district. Maria died in 1874 (Vic 10484) possibly during childbirth. Alfred subsequently married Catherine Fraser in 1875 (Vic 1875/1535); she was the daughter of John Fraser and Caroline Strange and she was born at Ballarat in 1857 (Vic 1857/5994). The two eldest children were born in Melbourne but the rest were born at Ballarat where the family moved to in about 1879. The 1914 electoral roll records that Alfred was a saddler of Howitt Street, Wendouree near Ballarat. Alfred died on 31st July 1921 (Vic 1921/8218) aged 78 years. He was buried in Ballarat Old Cemetery on 1st August 1921. Probate records show that he was a leather merchant of Howitt Street, Ballarat (Probate Vic 179/422).
