The Descendants of John Alchin and Jane Davis of Warlingham, Surrey 1 ~~ John Alchin John was probably born between 1640 and 1655 (note there was a John Alchin born to John Alchin and Elizabeth Death at Meopham, Kent in 1643). John married Jane Davis at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 13th August 1674. John and Jane had at least four children – James (1675), John (1679), William (1682) and Henry (1691). 1.1 ~~ James Alchin James was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 13th September 1675. James married Ann at an unknown place and date (nothing more is known of her). James and Ann had at least five children – Mary (1707), James (1710), William (1713), Elisha (1717) and John (1721). 1.1.1 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was born on 1st September 1707 and she was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 14th September 1707. Mary died aged 20 months and she was buried at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 4th May 1709. 1.1.2 ~~ James Alchin James was born on 5th August 1710 and he was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 13th August 1710. James married Elizabeth at an unknown place and date. James and Elizabeth had at least one child – Ann (1735). 1.1.2.1 ~~ Ann Alchin Ann was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 12th October 1735. 1.1.3 ~~ William Alchin William was born on 1st October 1713 and he was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 4th October 1713. William probably married Sarah Gilbert at St Benet Paul’s Wharf, London on 9th December 1740. William and Sarah had at least five children – Mary (1741), William (1742), John (1744), James (1746) and Elisha (1747). 1.1.3.1 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 7th September 1741. 1.1.3.2 ~~ William Alchin William was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 3rd October 1742. William married Sarah (her surname is unknown) at an unknown place and date. William and Sarah had at least ten children – Elizabeth (1769), Ann (1771), William (1773), Mary (1777), John (1779), Jenny (1782), Martha (1784), Sarah (1786), Judith (1787) and Henry (1789). 1.1.3.2.1 ~~ Elizabeth Alchin Elizabeth was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 25th October 1769. 1.1.3.2.2 ~~ Ann Alchin Ann was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 11th August 1771. 1.1.3.2.3 ~~ William Alchin William was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 5th September 1773. William may have married Elizabeth (her surname and the date and place of their marriage is presently unknown). William and Elizabeth had at least one child – William (1799). William died before 1827. In that year Elizabeth made a will leaving all her estate to her son William Williams Alchin. At the time she was living at 7 Northampton Street off the Kent Road, London. At the time of her death in 1838 Elizabeth was living at Providence Street, St George in the East. She was probably aged at least 60 years. Her will was proved at London on 20th November 1838:
1.1.3.2.3.1 ~~ William Williams Alchin William was born on 15th September 1799 and he was baptised at St Olave’s church, Southwark on 2nd November 1806. William may have married Elizabeth (surname and the date and place of their marriage is unknown). William and Elizabeth had at least one child – James (1821). William was made the sole Executor and beneficiary of his mother’s will (written in 1827 and proved in 1838). 1.1.3.2.3.1.1 ~~ James Williams Alchin James was baptised at Coulsden on 13th May 1821. 1.1.3.2.4 ~~ Mary Alchin Mary was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 23rd April 1777. 1.1.3.2.5 ~~ John Alchin John was born on 26th December 1779 and he was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 8th February 1780. 1.1.3.2.6 ~~ Jenny Alchin Jenny was born on 10th August 1782 and she was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 1st September 1782. 1.1.3.2.7 ~~ Martha Alchin Martha was born on 24th June 1784 and she was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 25th July 1784. 1.1.3.2.8 ~~ Sarah Alchin Sarah was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham in 1786. 1.1.3.2.9 ~~ Judith Alchin Judith was born on 25th January 1787 and she was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 18th February 1787. 1.1.3.2.10 ~~ Henry Alchin Henry was born at Warlingham on 8th October 1789 and he was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 25th October 1789. Henry probably married Mary Morley at Epsom on 16th May 1816; she was born at Bletchingley, Surrey in about 1799. Henry and Mary had at least nine children – William (1817), James (1820), Henry (1822), Alice (1825), Amelia (1827), Michael (1831), Martha (1834), Thomas (1837) and Jane (1840). The 1841 census records that Henry was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their eight surviving children were living at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden near Croydon. The 1851 census records that Henry was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Waddington. The 1861 census records that Henry was still an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three unmarried children were living at Waddington Street, Coulsden. The 1871 census records that Henry was still an agricultural labourer at the age of 82 years. Mary died in 1878 aged ‘82’ years (Croydon 1878 June qtr Volume 2a Page 145). Henry may have died in 1879 aged ‘92’ years (Godstone 1879 September qtr Volume 2a Page98). 1.1.3.2.10.1 ~~ William Alchin William was born at Coulsden in 1817 and he was baptised at Coulsden on 16th March 1817. The 1841 census records that William was working as an agricultural labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. The 1851 census records that William was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was still living with his parents at Waddington. William may have died in 1854 when he would have been 37 years old. 1.1.3.2.10.2 ~~ James Alchin James was born at Coulsden in about 1820. He and his brother Henry were baptised at Coulsden on 1st June 1823. The 1841 census records that James was working as an agricultural labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. James may have married Fanny Moore at the church of St John the Baptist, Croydon on 24th November 1850 (Croydon 1850 December qtr Volume 4 page 92); she was born at Buckland in 1835 and she would have been only 15 years old at the time of her marriage. James and his wife are not recorded in the 1851 census. James and Fanny had at least eight children – Thomas (1851), Henry (1853), Annis (1855), Mary (1859), Amelia (1861), William (1865), Elizabeth (1866) and Mary (1868). The 1861 census records that James was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their five children were living at Udles (?) Lane, Buckland. James probably died in 1869 aged 48 years (West London 1869 December qtr Volume 1d Page 418) Fanny subsequently married William Johnson in 1871 (Reigate 1871 September qtr Volume 2a Page 215). William and Fanny had at least three more children – Harriett (1872), Eleanor (1874) and Emily (1876). The 1881 census records that William was a bricklayer’s labourer and he and his wife and six of their children were living at 12 Frances Road, Beddington. 1.1.3.2.10.2.1 ~~ Thomas James Alchin Thomas was born at Chipstead in 1851 (Reigate 1851 March qtr Volume 4 Page 466). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Buckland. There is no further trace of Thomas in England. 1.1.3.2.10.2.2 ~~ Henry Alchin Henry was born at Leigh in 1853 (Reigate 1853 June qtr Volume 2a Page 97). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Buckland. There is no surviving record of Henry in the 1871 or 1881 English census. Henry married Alice Wilmhurst in London in 1889 (Wandsworth 1889 December qtr Volume 1d Page 934); she was born at Rotherfield in 1858. Henry and Alice had at least three children – Herbert (1891), Thomas (1892) and Frances (1895). The 1891 census records that Henry was a tram driver and he and his wife were living alone at 16 Carfax Square, Clapham. Alice was heavily pregnant with their first child at the time. The 1901 census records that Henry was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at 63 Leighton Street, Croydon. Henry died in 1902 aged only 49 years (Croydon 1902 September qtr Volume 2a Page 173). Alice probably moved back to her native village after her husband’s death. Alice died in 1940 aged 82 years (Uckfield 1940 June qtr Volume 2b Page 345). 1.1.3.2.10.2.2.1 ~~ Herbert Henry Alchin Henry was born at Croydon in 1891 (Croydon 1891 June qtr Volume 2a Page 283). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 63 Leighton Street, Croydon. Herbert died in 1960 aged 69 years (Uckfield 1960 September qtr Volume 5b Page 443). 1.1.3.2.10.2.2.2 ~~ Thomas James Alchin Thomas was born at Croydon in 1892 (Croydon 1892 December qtr Volume 2a Page 261). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 63 Leighton Street, Croydon. Thomas died in 1970 aged 77 years (Croydon 1970 March qtr Volume 5g Page 1994). 1.1.3.2.10.2.2.3 ~~ Frances Amelia Alchin Frances was born at Croydon in 1895 (Croydon 1895 March qtr Volume 2a Page 229). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 63 Leighton Street, Croydon. Frances may have married George Corbett at Eastbourne in 1917. 1.1.3.2.10.2.3 ~~ Annis Alchin Annis was born at Buckland in 1855 (Reigate 1855 December qtr Volume 2a Page 92). The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Buckland. The 1881 census records that Annis was a house servant at Elm Lawn, Balham Hill, Streatham. 1.1.3.2.10.2.4 ~~ Mary Ann Jane Alchin Mary was born at Buckland in 1859 (Reigate 1859 June qtr Volume 2a Page 127). The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Buckland. Mary died at Buckland in 1862 aged 3 years (Reigate 1862 September qtr Volume 2a Page 73). 1.1.3.2.10.2.5 ~~ Amelia Emma Alchin Amelia was born at Buckland in 1861 (Reigate 1861 March qtr Volume 2a Page 135). The 1861 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with her family at Buckland. The 1881 census records that Amelia (recorded here as Emma A) was a house servant at Lambeth. Amelia never married. She died in 1949 aged 88 years (Surrey NE 1949 June qtr Volume 5g Page 491). 1.1.3.2.10.2.6 ~~ William John Alchin William was born at Buckland in 1865 (Reigate 1865 March qtr Volume 2a Page 141). He and his family are not recorded in the 1871 census. The 1881 census records that William was a milk carrier and he was living with his mother and step-father at 12 Frances Road, Beddington. William married Henrietta Pratt in 1889 (Brentford 1889 March qtr Volume 3a Page 104); she was born at Harbury, Warwickshire in 1863. William and Henrietta had at least two children – William (1885) and Walter (1886). The 1891 census records that William was a coachman and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 55 Byres Road, Croydon. The 1901 census records that William was still a coachman and he and his wife and their two sons were living at Gordon Avenue, Harrow Weald (near Henbury). William’s 3 year old nephew (Charles T. Watson of Norwood) was also living with them. William and Henrietta’s youngest son Walter was killed in action in France in 1917. Henrietta died in 1934 aged 71 years (Birmingham 1934 September qtr Volume 6d Page 402). William died in 1941 aged 76 years (Warwick 1941 September qtr Volume 6b Page 1022). 1.1.3.2.10.2.6.1 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was born at Beddington in 1885 (Croydon 1885 September qtr Volume 2a Page 224). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 55 Byres Road, Croydon. The 1901 census records that Walter was a clerk in a provision’s factory and he was living with his parents at Gordon Avenue, Harrow Weald. William died in 1943 aged 58 years (Birmingham 1943 December qtr Volume 6d Page 574). 1.1.3.2.10.2.6.2 ~~ Walter John Alchin Walter was born at Purley in 1886 (Croydon 1886 December qtr Volume 2a Page 224). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 55 Byres Road, Croydon. The 1901 census records that Walter was a clerk in a provision’s factory and he was living with his parents at Gordon Avenue, Harrow Weald. Walter was killed in action in France in 1917 aged only 31 years. 1.1.3.2.10.2.7 ~~ Elizabeth Alchin Elizabeth was born at Buckland in 1866 (Reigate 1866 December qtr Volume 2a Page 145). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 12 Frances Road, Beddington. Elizabeth may have married in 1896 (possibly to a man surnamed Watson). 1.1.3.2.10.2.7 ~~ Mary Ann Alchin Mary was born at Buckland in 1868 (Reigate 1868 September qtr Volume 2a Page 158). She and the rest of her family are not recorded in the 1871 English census. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 12 Frances Road, Beddington. Mary may have married either Harry Hoad or John James in 1892 (Croydon 1892 March qtr Volume 2a Page 379). 1.1.3.2.10.3 ~~ Henry Alchin Henry was born at Coulsden in about 1823. He and his elder brother James were baptised at Coulsden on 1st June 1823. The 1841 census records that Henry was working as an agricultural labourer. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. Henry never married. The 1851 census records that Henry was a groom and he was living with his parents at Waddington. The 1861 census records that Henry was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Waddington Street, Coulsden. The 1871 census records that Henry was an unmarried gardener and he was living with his elderly parents at Waddington. Henry probably died in 1883 aged ‘58’ years (Godstone 1883 March qtr Volume 2a Page 124). 1.1.3.2.10.4 ~~ Alice Alchin Alice was born at Coulsden in about 1825. The 1841 census records that Alice was living with her parents at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. 1.1.3.2.10.5 ~~ Amelia Alchin Amelia was born at Coulsden in about 1827. The 1841 census records that Amelia was living with her parents at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. The 1861 census records that Amelia was an unmarried domestic servant and she was back living with her parents at Waddington Street, Coulsden. Amelia may have married John Fairall in 1864 (Croydon 1864 September qtr Volume 2a Page 245). 1.1.3.2.10.6 ~~ Michael Alchin Michael was born at Coulsden in 1831 and he was baptised at Coulsden on 11th September 1831. The 1841 census records that he was living with his family at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. The 1851 census records that Michael was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Waddington. Michael married Susan Ramsay in mid 1850’s; she was born at Southend, Essex in 1834. There is no trace of their marriage in the PRO registers, but then again they didn’t bother to register the births of their first three children either. Michael and Susan had at least nine children – Elizabeth (1856), Ada (1858), Frederick (1862), George (1864), Amelia (1865), Emily (1868), Herbert (1870), Annie (1872) and Henry (1874). The 1871 census records that Michael was a kennelman and he and his wife and their seven children were living at Laindon Road, Great Burstead in Essex. The 1881 census records that Michael was employed as a kennel man and he and his wife and six of their children were still living at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. When Michael’s eldest son was married in Scotland in 1891, his father was described on the wedding certificate as a “gentleman’s servant”. The 1891 census records that Michael was head kennelman and he and his wife and two of their children were living in a cottage in the kennel yards at Great Burstead. Susan died in 1892 aged 56 years (Billericay 1892 March qtr Volume 4a Page 318). The 1901 census records that Michael was a widowed “55 year old” kennel man. He was living with his youngest son at Kennel Cottage, Great Burstead. Michael died in 1920 aged 89 years (Billericay 1920 June qtr Volume 4a Page 549). 1.1.3.2.10.6.1 ~~ Elizabeth Alchin Elizabeth was born at Southend in about 1856. There is no surviving record of her birth registration. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. 1.1.3.2.10.6.2 ~~ Ada Alchin Ada was born at Southend in about 1858. There is no surviving record of her birth registration. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. 1.1.3.2.10.6.3 ~~ Frederick Alchin Frederick was born at Southend in about 1862. There is also no surviving record of his birth registration. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1881 census records that Frederick was a baker and he was lodging at Moores Place, South Weald in Essex. The 1891 census records that Frederick was an unmarried grocer’s assistant and he was living with younger married sister Amelia Pugh at 27 Mozart Street, Chelsea. 1.1.3.2.10.6.4 ~~ George Alchin George was born at Prittlewell, Essex in 1864 (Rochford 1864 June qtr Volume 4a Page 191). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1881 census records that he was employed as a groom and he was living with his parents at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. At the time of his marriage, George was employed as a huntsman at Roath (?), Cardiff in Wales. George married Annie Goodfellow at Kirkden, Scotland on 2nd June 1891. The ceremony was performed by Rev’d James Anderson and the witnesses were James Goodfellow and Agnes Bennett. Annie was a 23 year old farmer’s daughter of Kirkden – she was the daughter of Thomas Goodfellow and Agnes Grant. George and Annie had at least four children – Muriel (1893), Douglas (1898), James (1900) and William (1902). The two eldest children were born in Wales before the family returned to Scotland. The birth certificate of his son born in 1900 records that George was a lemonade van driver of 11 Forest Park Road, Dundee. The 1901 census records that George was employed as a mineral water vanman. He and his wife and their three eldest surviving children were still living at 11 Forest Park Road, Dundee. In 1902 George moved his family to Carnock in Fife. George died at Newstead, Melrose on 22nd October 1929 aged 65 years (Melrose 1929 799/010059). His cause of death was certified to be cancer of the rectum and exhaustion. The informant was his son James Alchin and the death certificate records that George’s occupation was stud groom. Annie died at 41 Hardie Street, Blantyre in Lanarkshire on 27th January 1953 aged 85 years (Blantyre1953 624/000008). Her doctor Adam Stewart certified that the cause of her death was senility. Her son in law James Russell was the informant for her death certificate. 1.1.3.2.10.6.4.1 ~~ Muriel A.E. Alchin Muriel was born, possibly at Cardiff, in 1893. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 11 Forest Park Road, Dundee. Muriel may have married James Russell. 1.1.3.2.10.6.4.2 ~~ Douglas Alexander G. Alchin Douglas was born at Cardiff in 1898 (Cardiff 1898 March qtr Volume 11a Page 295). The 1901 census records that Douglas was living with his family at 11 Forest Park Road, Dundee in Scotland. 1.1.3.2.10.6.4.3 ~~ James Henry Robert Alchin James was born at 11 Forest Park Road, Dundee on 14th October 1900 (St Mary 1900 282/020767). The 1901 census records that the infant boy was living with his family at the same address in Dundee. 1.1.3.2.10.6.4.4 ~~ William Goodfellow Alchin William was born in Fifeshire in 1902 (Carnock 1902 414/000024). He married Susan Olivia Cumming at Earlston in 1926. 1.1.3.2.10.6.5 ~~ Amelia Alchin Amelia was born at Prittlewell in 1865 (Rochford 1865 September qtr Volume 4a Page 190). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. Amelia married George Pugh in 1889 (Paddington 1889 September qtr Volume 1a Page 27); he was born at Leominster, Herefordshire in 1866. George and Amelia had at least four children – Violet (1890), Edith (1892), Thomas (1895) and Bertie (1897). The 1891 census records that George was a milk carrier and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living at 27 Mozart Street, Chelsea. Amelia’s elder brother Frederick Alchin was also living with them at the time. The 1901 census records that George was still a milk carrier and he and his wife and their four children were living at 173 Drummond Street, St Pancras. 1.1.3.2.10.6.5.1 ~~ Violet Pugh Violet was born at Paddington in 1890. The 1891 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with her family at 27 Mozart Street, Chelsea. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her parents at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. Emily married Herbert Pugh in 1888 (Hendon 1888 March qtr Volume 3a Page 166); he was born at Leominster, Herefordshire in 1870. Herbert and Emily had at least two children – Eveline (1895) and Herbert (1898). The 1901 census records that Herbert was employed as a milkman and he and his family were down towards the bottom of the social pile. He and his wife and their two surviving children were living at 8 Bedford Terrace, Chelsea where they rented one room. 1.1.3.2.10.6.6.1 ~~ Eveline Louise Pugh Eveline was born at Paddington in 1895 (Paddington 1895 September qtr Volume 1a Page 13). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 8 Bedford Terrace, Chelsea. 1.1.3.2.10.6.6.2 ~~ Herbert George Pugh Herbert was born at Marylebone in 1898 (Marylebone 1898 December qtr Volume 1a Page 515). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 8 Bedford Terrace, Chelsea. 1.1.3.2.10.6.7 ~~ Herbert Alchin Herbert was born at Great Burstead in 1870 (Billericay 1870 December qtr Volume 4a Page 170). The 1871 census records that the 7 month old infant was living with his family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. Herbert is not recorded in the 1901 English census and it is possible that he was a soldier and serving in the Boer War. Herbert died in 1910 aged 39 years (Shoreditch 1910 September qtr Volume 1c Page 45). 1.1.3.2.10.6.8 ~~ Annie Alchin Annie was born at Great Burstead in 1872 (Billericay 1872 September qtr Volume 4a Page 197). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1891 census records that Annie was living with her parents at Kennel Cottage, Great Burstead. 1.1.3.2.10.6.9 ~~ Henry Alchin Henry was born at Great Burstead in 1874 (Billericay 1874 September qtr Volume 4a Page 202). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Laindon Road, Great Burstead. The 1891 census records that Henry was under-kennelman (to his father) and he was living with his parents in a cottage in the kennel yards at Great Burstead. The 1901 census records that Henry was employed as a groom. He was living with his widowed father at Kennel Cottage, Great Burstead. 1.1.3.2.10.7 ~~ Martha Alchin Martha was baptised at Coulsden on 27th April 1834. Martha died aged 8 months and she was buried at Coulsden on 19th February 1835. 1.1.3.2.10.8 ~~ Thomas Alchin Thomas was born at Coulsden in 1837 (Croydon 1837 September qtr Volume 4 Page 41) and he was baptised at Coulsden on 3rd September 1837. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Waddington hamlet, Coulsden. The 1851 census records that Thomas was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Waddington. The 1861 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he was still living with his parents at Waddington Street, Coulsden. Thomas married Caroline Martin at the church of St John the Baptist, Croydon on 25th August 1862 (Croydon 1862 September qtr Volume 2a Page 239); she was born at Caterham in 1838. Caroline died at Caterham in 1908 aged 70 years (Godstone 1908 December qtr Volume 2a Page 137). Like his father Thomas survived into very old age. Thomas and Emma had at least three children – Thomas (1892), Oliver (1895) and Violet (1900). The 1901 census records that Thomas was employed as a gas and hot water plumber. He and his wife and their three children were living at 15 Orchard Court, Caterham. Emma died in 1904 aged only 33 years (Godstone 1904 June qtr Volume 2a Page 122). Thomas may have remarried in 1910 to either Ada Athey or Julia Lavinia Bartlett (Godstone 1910 March qtr Volume 2a Page 381). He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps with the rank of Private (# 38307). The 1861 census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife were living in part of 7 Parkers Buildings, Bermondsey. Also living with them were two young children who are not recorded as being related but were actually their grand children (Esther Topham born Deptford in 1855 and William Donty [Doughty ?] born Bow in 1856). They also had two other visitors staying with them who were probably their married daughter and her husband [Elizabeth and John Laurence]. John and Sarah’s eldest son Joseph and his wife were living in another part of the building. Sarah probably died in 1867 aged ‘69’ years (Bermondsey 1867 September qtr Volume 1d page 45). The 1841 census records that Joseph was a labourer and he was living with his parents at Mellick Place, Bermondsey. Joseph married Maria Lamb; she was born at Odiham in Hampshire. The 1851 census records that Joseph was a leather dresser and he and his wife were living at the Leather Markets at 18 Elm Street, Bermondsey. Maria’s younger sister Harriett Lamb was visiting them at the time. The 1861 census records that Joseph was a tanner and he and his wife were living at 7 Parkers Buildings, Bermondsey. Maria probably died during the 1850’s or 1860’s. Joseph subsequently married Bridget Stockwell in 1870 (Greenwich 1870 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1001); she was born at Bermondsey in 1823. The 1871 census records that Joseph was a leather tanner and he and his wife were sharing a house with his youngest brother Henry at 10 Princess Street, Bermondsey. The 1881 census records that Joseph was a tanner and he and his wife were living alone at 44 Gedling Street, Bermondsey. Bridget died in 1891 aged 69 years (St Olave 1891 March qtr Volume 1d Page 136). The 1891 census records that John was an unmarried tanner and he was living with his widowed mother at 59 Francis Road, Southwark. 1.1.5.1.1.5.9 ~~ Esther Doughty Esther was born at Southwark in 1864. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 6 Rodney Street, Southwark. Esther died in 1876 aged only 12 years (St Olave 1876 June qtr Volume 1d page 120). 1.1.5.1.1.5.10 ~~ Ellen Doughty Ellen was born at Southwark in 1866 (St George Southwark 1866 December qtr Volume 1d Page 157). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 6 Rodney Street, Southwark. The 1881 census records that Ellen was a book folder and she was living with her widowed mother at 3 Brewer Court, Bermondsey. Ellen may have married Edward George Jones or William Bow Marshall in 1886 (St Olave 1886 December qtr Volume 1d Page 501). 1.1.5.1.1.5.11 ~~ James Doughty James was born at Southwark in 1870 (Southwark 1870 June qtr Volume 1d Page 65), The 1871 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with his family at 6 Rodney Street, Southwark. He is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1881 census. 1.1.5.1.1.5.12 ~~ Catherine Doughty Catherine was born at Southwark in 1875 (Southwark 1875 September qtr Volume 1d Page 286). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at 3 Brewer Court Bermondsey. The 1891 census records that Catherine was a machinist and she was living with her mother at 59 Francis Road, Southwark. |
