1.1.5.1.1.6  ~~  Rebecca Alchin

Rebecca was born at Bermondsey in about 1830. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her parents at Mellick Place, Bermondsey. Rebecca may have married at Camberwell in 1864.

1.1.5.1.1.7  ~~  John Henry Alchin

John was born at Bermondsey in 1832 and he was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey on 29th June 1832. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his parents at Mellick Place, Bermondsey.

John married Susannah Young; she was also born at Bermondsey in 1834. John and Susannah had at least six children – Caroline (1855), Mary (1856), Susannah (1859), John (1864), James (1866) and Stephen (1869). The 1861 census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife, their three young children and his sister in law were living at 4 Mill Lane (off Blue Anchor Road), Bermondsey.

The 1881 census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife and their three sons were living at 11 Alexis Street, Bermondsey. John may have died in 1886 aged 56 years (Camberwell 1886 June qtr Volume 1d Page 423). Susannah probably died in 1920 aged 86 years (Paddington 1920 December qtr Volume 1a Page 57).

1.1.5.1.1.7.1  ~~  Caroline Emma Alchin

Caroline was born at Bermondsey on 19th March 1855 (Bermondsey 1855 June qtr Volume 1d Page 70). The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 4 Mill Lane, Bermondsey.

1.1.5.1.1.7.2  ~~  Mary Ann Alchin

Mary was born at Bermondsey on 16th November 1856 (Bermondsey 1856 December qtr Volume 1d Page 56). The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 4 Mill Lane, Bermondsey. Mary may have died in 1864 (Bermondsey 1864 June qtr Volume 1d Page 56). If this was her she was only 7 years old.

1.1.5.1.1.7.3  ~~  Susannah Alchin

Susannah was born at Bermondsey in 1859 (Bermondsey 1859 June qtr Volume 1d Page 58). The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 4 Mill Lane, Bermondsey. Susannah died in 1861 aged 2 years (Bermondsey 1861 December qtr Volume 1d Page 66).

1.1.5.1.1.7.4  ~~  John Henry Alchin

John was born at Bermondsey in 1864 (Bermondsey 1864 March qtr Volume 1d Page 330). The 1881 census records that he was a seal skin dyer and he was living with his parents at 11 Alexis Street, Bermondsey. John married Mary A (her surname is presently unknown), probably in 1886; Mary was born at Hatcham in 1864.

John and Mary had at least four children – John (1890), Henry (1891), Mary (1894) and William (1897). The 1901 census records that John was a dock labourer and he and his wife and their four children were living at 40 Osprey Street, Rotherhithe. Their eldest son was killed in action in 1915.

John may have died in 1920 aged 57 years (St Olave 1920 March qtr Volume 1d Page 235). Mary may have died in 1927 aged 61 years (St Olave 1927 March qtr Volume 1d Page 214).

1.1.5.1.1.7.4.1  ~~  John James Alchin

John was born at Rotherhithe in 1890 (St Olave 1890 September qtr Volume 1d Page 271). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 40 Osprey Street, Rotherhithe. After he left school John joined the British Army. He was allocated to the Rifle Corps with regimental number 5/3143.

At the outbreak of war, John’s unit was sent to Belgium with the rest of the British Army. John was promoted to Corporal but he was killed in action on 4th May 1915 (possibly during the Second Battle of Ypres) aged only 25 years. He has no known grave.

1.1.5.1.1.7.4.2  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was born at Rotherhithe in 1891 (St Olave 1891 December qtr Volume 1d Page 305). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 40 Osprey Street, Rotherhithe.

1.1.5.1.1.7.4.3  ~~  Mary Ann Alchin

Mary was born at Deptford in 1894 (Greenwich 1894 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1045). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 40 Osprey Street, Rotherhithe.

1.1.5.1.1.7.4.4  ~~  William Thomas Alchin

William was born at Rotherhithe in 1897 (St Olave 1897 March qtr Volume 1d Page 319). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 40 Osprey Street, Rotherhithe.

1.1.5.1.1.7.5  ~~  James Henry Alchin

James was born at Bermondsey on 2nd January 1867 (Bermondsey 1867 March qtr Volume 1d Page 65). The 1881 census records that he worked as an errand boy and he was living with his parents at 11 Alexis Street, Bermondsey. James married Ellen Power at Southwark on 25th December 1888 (St Olave 1888 December qtr Volume 1d Page 253); she was the daughter of Richard Power and she was born at Holborn in 1869.

James and Ellen had at least eight children – James (1889), Stephen (1891), Ellen (1893), Harry (1895), Violet (1897), Lilian (1899), Joseph (1906) and Alfred (1912). The 1901 census records that James was working as a plumber’s labourer. He and his wife and their six children were living at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell.

Ellen died on 29th August 1921 aged 52 years (Camberwell 1921 September qtr Volume 1d Page 743). James died on 3rd December 1933 aged 66 years (Dartford 1933 December qtr Volume 2a Page 884).

James was born at Camberwell in 1889 (Camberwell 1889 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1451). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell.

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.2  ~~  Stephen Alchin

Stephen was born at Camberwell in 1891. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell. Stephen may have married in 1911 (Camberwell 1911 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1451).

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.3  ~~  Ellen Mabel Alchin

Ellen was born at Camberwell on 25th July 1893 (Camberwell 1893 September qtr Volume 1d Page 987). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell. Ellen married Alfred Earney at Greenwich on 8th May 1915 (Greenwich 1915 June qtr Volume 1d Page 2600).

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.4  ~~  Harry Arthur Alchin

Harry was born at Camberwell in 1895 (Camberwell 1895 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1000). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell. Harry married Alice A. Allaway in 1914 (Greenwich 1914 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1824).

Alice died in early 1922 aged 28 years (Greenwich 1922 March qtr Volume 1d Page 1412). Harry subsequently married a woman surnamed Allen later the same year (Greenwich 1922 December qtr Volume 1d Page 1941).

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.5  ~~  Violet Louise Victoria Alchin

Violet was born at Camberwell on 5th August 1897 (Camberwell 1897 September qtr Volume 1d Page 1028). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell. Violet married Henry Charles Salter at Greenwich in May 1920 (Greenwich 1920 June qtr Volume 1d Page 2310); he was born at Deptford on 8th June 1896.

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.6  ~~  Lilian Rebecca Alchin

Lilian was born at Camberwell in 1899 (Camberwell 1899 December qtr Volume 1d Page 982). The 1901 census records that she was living with her family at 8 Deptford Road, Camberwell.

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.7  ~~  Joseph William Alchin

Joseph was born at Camberwell on 3rd August 1906 (Camberwell 1906 September qtr Volume 1d Page 940). He married Florence Harriett Sully at Camberwell on 15th August 1926. Joseph died on 13th July 1980 aged 73 years.

1.1.5.1.1.7.5.8  ~~  Alfred John Alchin

Alfred was born at Deptford on 30th August 1911. Alfred died on 30th May 1912 aged 9 months (Greenwich 1912 June qtr Volume 1d Page 902).

1.1.5.1.1.7.6  ~~  Stephen Alchin

Stephen was born at Bermondsey on 17th October 1869 (Bermondsey 1869 December qtr Volume 1d Page 59). The 1881 census records that Stephen was a school boy and he was living with his parents at 11 Alexis Street, Bermondsey. Stephen died in 1894 aged 24 years (Camberwell 1894 June qtr Volume 1d Page 525).

1.1.5.1.1.8  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was born at Bermondsey in 1834. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her parents at Mellick Place, Bermondsey. The 1851 census records that Elizabeth was a ‘beaver puller’ and she was living with her parents at 22 Mellick Place, Bermondsey.

Elizabeth married John Lawrence; he was born at Rotherhithe in 1826. The 1861 census records that John was a labourer and Elizabeth was a charwoman. At that stage they had no children and they were visiting her parents at 7 Parkers Buildings, Bermondsey.

1.1.5.1.1.9  ~~  Henry John Alchin

Henry was born at Bermondsey in 1840. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his parents at Mellick Place, Bermondsey. The 1851 census records that Henry was an errand boy and he was living with his parents at 22 Mellick Place, Bermondsey.

Henry married Helena Arabella Bruckin in 1868 (Lambeth 1868 June qtr Volume 1d Page 421); she was born at Marylebone in 1842. Helena already had three children – Jessie (1860), Ralph (1862) and Frank (1864). Henry and Helena had at least one child of their own – John (1870).

The 1871 census records that Henry was a leather dyer and he and his wife, their son and her three children were sharing a house at 10 Princess Road, Bermondsey with his elder brother Joseph and his wife. Helena died later in 1871 aged 29 years (St Olave 1871 September qtr Volume 1d Page 165).

Henry subsequently married Jessie Annie Mackay in 1875 (St Olave 1875 September qtr Volume 1d Page 359); she was born at Lambeth in 1852. Henry and Jessie do not appear to have had any surviving children. The 1881 census records that Henry was employed as a dyer. He and his wife, their son and her two sons were living at 22 Alexis Street, Bermondsey.

The 1891 census records that Henry was a house painter and he and his wife were still living at 22 Alexis Street, Bermondsey. Visiting them at the time was a young boy,  Sidney G. Proctor (born in London in 1888), who was probably Henry’s grand-nephew.

The 1901 census records that Henry was a tobacconist and confectioner. He and his wife were living with his married son’s family at 15 Loampit Hill, Lewisham.

1.1.5.1.1.9.1  ~~  John Henry Alchin

John was born at Southwark in 1870 (St Saviour 1870 March qtr Volume 1d Page 66). The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at 10 Princess Road, Bermondsey.

The 1881 census records that John was a schoolboy and he was living with his family at 22 Alexis Street, Bermondsey. John married an unknown woman. They had at least two children – Marguerite (1895) and Winifred (1899). They adopted another child – Maud (1895).

The 1901 census records that John was a printer and compositor. He and his three daughters (his wife is not recorded with the rest of the family and she must have been away visiting relatives) were living with his parents at 15 Loampit Hill, Lewisham.

John died in 1950 aged 80 years (Essex SW 1950 December qtr Volume 5a Page 269).

1.1.5.1.1.9.1.1  ~~  Marguerite Clarissa Alchin

Marguerite was born at Southwark in 1895 (St Saviour 1895 March qtr Volume 1d Page 14). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 15 Loampit Hill, Lewisham. Marguerite married Herbert Breeze in 1914 (W Ham 1914 September qtr Volume 4a Page 522).

1.1.5.1.1.9.1.2  ~~  Maud Amy Alchin

Maud was born at Richmond in 1895. She was an adopted child according to the 1901 census. She was living with her adopted parents and grandparents at 15 Loampit Hill, Lewisham.

1.1.5.1.1.9.1.3  ~~  Winifred Millicent Alchin

Winifred was born at Walhamstow in 1899 (Dartford 1899 September qtr Volume 2a Page 586). The 1901 census records that she was living with her parents and grandparents at 15 Loampit Hill, Lewisham. Winifred married a man surnamed Cook in 1922 (Hemel Hempstead 1922 September qtr Volume 3a Page 2315).

1.1.5.1.2  ~~  Joseph Alchin

Joseph and his twin brother John were born at Bermondsey on 18th January 1801 and they were baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey on 15th March 1801. Joseph married Mary Hannah (her surname is presently unknown but it may have been Hales). Joseph and Mary had at least three children – Henry (1824), Richard (1829) and Joseph (1832).

The 1841 census records that Joseph was a warehouseman and he and his wife and their three children were living at Steel Yard, Maze Pond, Southwark. Also living there was 70 year old Mary Hales who may have been Joseph’s mother in law.

1.1.5.1.2.1  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey on 30th May 1824. The 1841 census records that Henry was a porter and he was living with his parents at Steel Yard, Maze Pond, Southwark.

1.1.5.1.2.2  ~~  Richard Joseph Alchin

Richard was baptised at St Saviour’s church, Southwark on 29th March 1829. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Steel Yard, Maze Pond, Southwark. Richard married Mary Ann; she was born at Bermondsey in 1827.

The 1851 census records that Richard was a porter and he and his wife were living at 1 Steel Yard, Southwark. Richard’s younger brother Joseph was living with them at the time. The 1861 census records that Richard was a leather dresser and he and his wife were living at Perseverance Street, Bermondsey.

Mary died in 1864 aged about 37 years (Bermondsey 1864 June qtr Volume 1d Page 56). Richard married Mary Mitchell the following year (Bermondsey 1865 December qtr Volume 1d Page 99); she was born at Eye, Suffolk in 1821 and she already had a son George (1855).

The 1881 census records that Richard was a tanner and he and his wife and her son were living at 6 James Street, Bermondsey. The 1891 census records that Joseph was a leather tanner and he and his wife were living at 104 St James Road, Bermondsey.

1.1.5.1.2.3  ~~  Joseph Alchin

Joseph was born at Southwark in 1832. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Steel Yard, Maze Pond, Southwark. The 1851 census records that Joseph was a tailor and he was living with his elder brother Richard at 1 Steel Yard, Southwark.

John was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 13th October 1679.

William was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 15th October 1682.

1.4  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at All Saints’ church, Warlingham on 19th April 1691.
