6f. The Alchins of Eastbourne

The first mention of the family was the baptism of the children of John and Sarah Alchin in the early years of the 19th century. The family was probably descended from the Alchornes of Rotherfield.

1  ~~  John Alchin

John was probably born between 1770 and 1780. He married Sarah and they had at least six children – Mary (1805), Henry (1807), Sarah (1809), George (1814), Ann (1815) and Elizabeth (1820). The parish registers show that John was a cordwainer.

The 1841 census records that John was a shoemaker and he and his wife and their two daughters were living at Reese Street, Lewes.

1.1  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was born in Sussex in about 1805. The 1841 census records that Mary was a spinster and she was living with parents at Reese Street, Lewes.

1.2  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was born at Eastbourne in 1807 and he was baptised at St Mary’s church, Eastbourne on 13th March 1807. Henry married Harriett; she was born at Lewes in 1805. Henry and Harriett had at least four children  – Caroline (1827), Sarah (1829), Henry (1831) and George (1843).

The 1841 census records that Henry was a bricklayer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Reese Street, Lewes. The 1851 and 1861 census both record that Henry was a bricklayer and he and his wife and their son were still living at Reese Street, Lewes.

The 1871 and 1881 census both record that Henry was a bricklayer and he and his wife were living alone at 6 Reese Street, Lewes. Harriett died in 1884 aged 79 years (Lewes 1884 December qtr Volume 2b Page 115). Henry died in 1888 aged 81 years (Brighton 1888 June qtr Volume 2b Page 152).

1.2.1  ~~  Caroline Alchin

Caroline was born at Lewes in 1827. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Reese Street, Lewes.

1.2.2  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah was born at Lewes in 1829. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Reese Street, Lewes.

1.2.3  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was born at Lewes in 1831. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Reese Street, Lewes.

1.2.4  ~~  George Alchin

George was born at Lewes in 1843 and he was baptised at Lewes on 12th November 1843. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Reese Street, Lewes. The 1861 census records that George was a bricklayer’s labourer and he was still living with his parents at Reese Street, Lewes.

George married Lucy Ranger in 1864 (Brighton 1864 December qtr Volume 2b Page 222); she was born at Laughton in 1843. George and Lucy had no surviving children. The 1871 census records that George was a railway porter and he and his wife were living at 1 Terminus Street, Brighton.

The 1881 census records that George was a packer and he and Lucy were living at Terminus Street, Brighton. The 1891 census records that George was a furniture mover and he and his wife were living at 22 Terminus Street, Brighton.

George died in 1892 aged only 48 years (Brighton 1892 September qtr Volume 2b Page 180). Lucy died in 1922 aged 78 years (Brighton 1922 June qtr Volume 2b Page 261).

1.3  ~~  Sarah Alchin

Sarah was baptised at St Mary’s church, Eastbourne on 14th May 1809.

1.4  ~~  George Alchin

George was baptised at St Mary’s church, Eastbourne on 23rd October 1814.

1.5  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at St Mary’s church, Eastbourne on 26th November 1815.

1.6  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was born in Sussex in about 1820. The 1841 census records that Elizabeth was living with her parents at Reese Street, Lewes.
