Volume 5 – Kent and Beyond by Steve Green Part 6 – Other Alchin Families of Interest 6g. The Alchins of Barnes, Surrey This family is probably descended from one of the sons of Amy Alchin of Ewell in Surrey who died in 1774. She had three children – Ann (Fox), Henry and George. She left her estate to her three children in equal shares:
1 ~~ George Alchin George was born at Barnes in Surrey in 1818 and he may have been a relative of William Alchin of Northampton. He married Ann, possibly in 1846 (Doncaster 1846 December qtr Volume 22 Page 73); she was born at Bawtry, Yorkshire in 1817. George and Ann had at least three children – Jane (1846), Emma (1847) and George (1850). The 1851 census records that George was a plumber and he and his wife and their three children were living at Barnes. The 1881 census records that George was a “Collector”. He and his wife and their two unmarried daughters were living at 6a The Terrace, Barnes. George and Ann died within days or weeks of each other. George died soon afterwards aged 67 years (Richmond S 1885 June qtr Volume 2a Page 244). 1.1 ~~ Jane Ann Alchin Jane was supposedly born at Barnes in 1846 but it seems more likely that she was born before her mother’s marriage. The 1881 census also records that Emma was unmarried and she was living with her parents at 6a The Terrace, Barnes. The 1901 census records that Emma was living on her own means and she was living with her sister at Barnes. Emma never married. She died in 1929 aged 82 years (Richmond S June qtr Volume 2a Page 669). 1.3 ~~ George Frederick Alchin George was born at Barnes in 1850 (Richmond S 1850 September qtr Volume 4 Page 430).
