Volume 5 – Kent and Beyond by Steve Green Part 6 – Other Alchin Families of Interest 6h. The Alchins of Heathfield, Sussex 1 ~~ William Alchin William was born at Fletching, Sussex in 1809. He married Ellen Vigor at St Nicholas’ church, Brighton on 14th December 1848 (Brighton 1848 December qtr Volume 7 Page 508); she was born at Brightling, Sussex in 1828. William and Ellen had at least three children – George (1849), Alfred (1851) and William (1858). The 1861 census records that William was a master grocer and baker and he and his wife and their three sons were living at Portland Square, Heathfield. William died at Heathfield in 1879 age 70 years (Hailsham 1879 September qtr Volume 2b Page 46). The 1881 census records that Ellen was a widowed grocer and she and her youngest son were still living at Heathfield. Ellen died at Heathfield in 1892 aged 65 years (Hailsham 1892 September qtr Volume 2b Page 69). 1.1 ~~ George Alchin George was born at Heathfield in 1849 (Heathfield March qtr Volume 7 Page 422). The 1861 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his parents at Portland Square, Heathfield. George married Sarah Jane Hobbs in 1872 (Uckfield 1872 September qtr Volume 2b Page 161); she was born at Mayfield in 1843. George and Sarah had at least six children – Ellen (1873), George (1874), Emma (1875), James (1877), Fanny (1879) and Ada (1882). The 1881 census records that George was a journeyman butcher and he and his young family were living at 21 St Stephens Street, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that George was working as a commission agent and he and his wife and four of their children were living at High Street, Mayfield. The 1901 census records that George was a cattle dealer (probably in partnership with his younger brother). He and his wife were living alone at High Street, Mayfield. George died in 1903 aged 54 years (Uckfield 1903 September qtr Volume 2b Page 64). Sarah died in 1921 aged 78 years (Uckfield 1921 December qtr Volume 2b Page 160).
1.1.1 ~~ Ellen Alchin Ellen was born at Mayfield in 1873 (there is no record of her birth registration). The 1881 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her family at 21 St Stephens Street, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that Ellen was unmarried and she was living with her family at High Street, Mayfield. Ellen married William Albert Rebbeck in 1896 (Uckfield 1896 December qtr Volume 2b Page 281); he was born at Mayfield in 1871. William and Ellen had at least three children – William (1897), Albert (1899) and Fred (1901). The 1901 census records that William was a journeyman butcher (working for his father in law perhaps) and he and his young family were living at Back Lane, Mayfield. Their eldest son died of his wounds during World War One. At the time the family was living at South Street, Mayfield. 1.1.1.1 ~~ William Alfred Rebbeck Alfred was born at Mayfield in 1897 (Uckfield 1897 March qtr Volume 2b Page 127). The 1901 census records that he was living with his family at Back Lane, Mayfield. William enlisted in the Army during World War One. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex regiment (infantry) with the rank of Private and regimental number G/8245. William was probably seriously wounded on the Somme in the summer of 1916. He was repatriated to England but he died of his wounds on 14th November 1916 aged only 19 years. William was buried in the churchyard of St Dunstan’s, Mayfield.
1.1.1.2 ~~ Albert Rebbeck Albert was born at Mayfield in 1899 (Uckfield 1899 March qtr Volume 2b Page 122). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Back Lane, Mayfield. 1.1.1.3 ~~ Fred Rebbeck Fred was born at Mayfield in early April 1901 (Uckfield 1901 June qtr Volume 2b Page 112). The 1901 census records that the 3 week old infant was living with his family at Back Lane, Mayfield. Unfortunately Fred died a few months later (Uckfield 1901 December qtr Volume 2b Page 73). 1.1.2 ~~ George Alchin George was born, probably at Mayfield, in 1874 (Uckfield 1874 September qtr Volume 2b Page 113). He died in 1877 aged 2 years (Uckfield 1877 June qtr Volume 2b Page 51). 1.1.3 ~~ Emma Jane Alchin Emma was born at Mote Road, Maidstone on 17th November 1875 (Maidstone 1876 March qtr Volume 2a Page 678) and she was baptised at All Saints’ church, Maidstone on 13th February 1876. The 1881 census records that Emma was a school girl and she was living with her family at 21 St Stephens Street, Tonbridge. Emma may have married Alfred William Sumner or Arthur Warnett in 1898 (Ticehurst 1898 December qtr Volume 2b Page 263). 1.1.4 ~~ James Alfred Alchin James was born at Heathfield in 1877 (Hailsham 1877 December qtr Volume 2b Page 58). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 21 St Stephens Street, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that James was a school boy and he was living with his parents at High Street, Mayfield. The 1891 census records that James (known now as Alfred) was working as a groom for Dr Gardiner Tranter (?) at Rotherfield. James married in 1905 (Uckfield 1905 December qtr Volume 2b Page 304). 1.1.5 ~~ Fanny Alchin Fanny was born at Mayfield in 1879 (Uckfield 1879 December qtr Volume 2b Page 122) and she was baptised at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 7th December 1879. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 21 St Stephens Street, Tonbridge. The 1891 census records that Fanny was a school girl and she was living with her parents at High Street, Mayfield. The 1901 census records that Fanny was an unmarried parlour maid and she was working for Rev’d John Kirby, the Vicar of Mayfield. The Kirby family had been Vicars of Mayfield for nearly 200 years. 1.1.6 ~~ Ada Elizabeth Alchin Ada was born at Mayfield in 1882 (Uckfield 1882 March qtr Volume 2b Page 125) and she was baptized at St Dunstan’s church, Mayfield on 5th March 1882. The 1891 census records that Ada was a school girl and she was living with her family at High Street, Mayfield. Ada died in 1899 aged 17 years (Hailsham 1899 December qtr Volume 2b Page 97). 1.2 ~~ Alfred George Alchin Alfred was born at Heathfield in 1851 (Hailsham 1851 March qtr Volume 7 Page 426). The 1861 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at Portland Square, Heathfield. Alfred married Leonora Friend (was she a relative of Julia Friend who married John Alchin of Croydon) in 1878 (Hailsham 1878 June qtr Volume 2b Page 156); she was born in 1855. Alfred and Leonora had at least three children – Annie (1878), Alfred (1881) and Robert (1883). There is no sign of Alfred or Leonora in the 1881 English census. The 1891 census records that Alfred was a grocer and baker and he and his wife and their three children were living at Cade Street, Heathfield. The 1901 census records that Alfred was still a grocer and baker of Cade Street, Heathfield. Leonora died in 1901 aged 46 years (Hailsham 1901 December qtr Volume 2b Page 57). Alfred may have remarried in 1909 (Hailsham 1909 March qtr Volume 2b Page 131). He died in 1920 aged 68 years (Hailsham 1920 March qtr Volume 2b Page 131). 1.2.1 ~~ Annie L. Alchin Annie was born at Dallington in 1878. The 1891 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her family at Cade Street, Heathfield. The 1901 census records that Annie was unmarried and she was working for her parents at Heathfield. Annie did not marry and she died in 1927 aged 49 years (Hailsham 1927 December qtr Volume 2b Page 138). 1.2.2 ~~ Alfred Alchin Alfred was born at Heathfield in 1881. The 1901 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his parents at Cade Street, Heathfield. The 1901 census records that Alfred was a journeyman baker and he was living with Henry Tyler, a master baker of Woking. 1.2.3 ~~ Robert William Alchin Robert was born in 1883 (Hailsham 1883 December qtr Volume 2b Page 103). The 1891 census records that Robert was a school boy and he was living with his family at Cade Street, Heathfield. The 1901 census records that he was working for his parents at their shop in Heathfield. Robert married in 1908 (Hailsham 1908 March qtr Volume 2b Page 157). Robert died in 1947 aged 63 years (Tonbridge 1947 June qtr Volume 5b Page 806). 1.3 ~~ William Vigor Alchin William was born at Heathfield (his second name is proof that Ellen Vigor did not marry William Alchin of Croydon) in 1858 (Hailsham 1858 June qtr Volume 2b Page ***). The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Portland Square, Heathfield. The 1881 census records that William was a “dealer” and he was living with his widowed mother at Heathfield. William married Mary Ann Littleproud (?) in 1886 (Hailsham 1886 December qtr Volume 2b Page 200); she was born at Attleborough, Norfolk in 1851. William and Mary had one child – Mary (1888). The 1891 census records that William was a cattle dealer and he and his wife and his widowed mother were living at Putlands Farm, Heathfield. Reverend Harry Babington (born Camberwell in 1863) was lodging with the family at the time. The 1901 census records that William was still a cattle dealer and he and his family were still at Putlands Farm. William died in 1925 aged 68 years (Uckfield 1925 September qtr Volume 2b Page 136). 1.3.1 ~~ Mary Ann Alchin Mary was born at Heathfield in 1888 (Hailsham 1888 March qtr Volume 2b Page 99). The 1891 and 1901 census both record that she was living with her family at Putlands Farm, Heathfield. |
