Part 6 – Other Alchin Families of Interest

6k. The Alchins of Waltham Abbey, Essex

It seems likely that this family is related to the Alchins of Linton although where exactly they fit in I have not yet been able to establish. Most of the family migrated to the United States in the early 1880s and settled initially in New York State before moving westwards.

1  ~~  John Alchin

John was reputedly born at Smarden in May 1822. At this stage his parentage is unknown. But he is probably closely related to the Alchins of Linton (see Part 4 of Affinity for Wood). There is a possibility that he is the youngest son of William Alchin and Mercy Hawkins who were baptizing children at nearby Headcorn between 1808 and 1820. They had a son John who was baptised at Headcorn on 5th March 1820. There is no surviving trace of either John in the 1841 English census.

John married Harriett Watts; she was born at Benenden in 1824. They had at least thirteen children – John (1844), Charlotte (1846), William (1847), Edward (1849), Elizabeth (1851), Albert (1852), Caroline (1854), Mary (1856), Harriett (1857), Caroline (1860), Jane (1861), Richard (1863) and Henry (1864).

Their first seven children were born in Kent and the remainder were born after they moved to Waltham Abbey in Essex. The 1851 census records that John was a sawyer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Little Houses, Egerton in Kent.

The 1861 census records that John was a sawyer and he and his wife and their eight surviving children were living at Sewardstone Street, Waltham Abbey. The 1871 census records that John was a sawyer and he and his wife, eight of their children and a grandson were living at 14 Fountain Place, Waltham Abbey. Also living with them was George Fish (born Bishops Stortford in 1854). His sister Nellie married John’s son William a few years later.

The 1881 census records that John was still a sawyer and he and his wife and their youngest son were living at 8 Pheasant Cottages, Chatham. There is no sign of John or his family in England after this date. John appears to have migrated to the Unites States in 1894 according to the 1900 US census. The census also records that John was a widowed farm labourer and he was living with his married son Richard at Islip, Suffolk County, New York.

John was born at Boughton Malherbe in Kent in May 1844 (Hollingbourne 1844 June qtr Volume 5 Page 225). He was baptised at Boughton Malherbe on 19th May 1844. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Little Houses, Egerton.

He married Elizabeth Sumbers (Lumbers?); she was born at Spaldwick, Huntingdonshire in October 1843. John and Elizabeth had at least seven children – John (1865), Edward (1867), Arthur (1869), David (1870, Alfred (1873), Ernest (1875) and Caroline (1876).

The 1881 census records that Elizabeth was married but her husband was not present. Elizabeth was a washing woman and she and her seven children were living at Licham Street, St Pancras in London. It is likely that John was already in the United States of America preparing a home for the rest of his family (confirmed by the 1900 census). Elizabeth and her seven children arrived in New York from London aboard the SS Germanic in October 1881.

The 1900 US census records that John was a day labourer and he and his wife, their two unmarried children and a grandson were living at Ansonia in the city of New Haven, Connecticut.
