Volume 5 – Kent and Beyond by Steve Green

Part 6 – Other Alchin Families of Interest

6l.  ~~  The Alchins of Leroy, County Ingham, Michigan

1  ~~  William Alchin

The 1840 US census indicates that William was born between 1780 and 1790. He may in fact have been the son of Richard Alchin  and Ann Hunt in which case he would have been baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 23rd March 1788 (see Volume 1 Part 3 Paragraph 1.3.5.4.3).

Richard Alchin was for a time a miller at Maidstone and his eldest son Richard married and baptised several children at Maidstone between 1807 and 1823. An alternative view is that William was the son of Thomas Alchin and Elizabeth Loudwell and he was baptised at St Nicholas’ church, Linton on 2nd July 1775 (see Volume 4 Part 5 Paragraph 1.4.6).

This alternative theory is lent credence by the fact that William named one of his sons Edmund which was a name used consistently used by the Alchin family of Linton. On the other hand this William seems to be too old and the elder children are not named in the will of his father Thomas Alchin of Linton dated 1826. Nor did William name any of his children after his father.

We know from his son’s 1891 biography that William married Mercy Hawkins and that wedding occurred after the publication of the banns at All Saints’ church, Maidstone on 26th December 1807. Both of them were living in the parish at the time and neither had been married previously.

However there is a record of the banns being published at Headcorn between George Munday and Mercy Hawkins on 25th March, 1st and 8th April 1804. Either the marriage did not proceed for some reason or else Mercy had a cousin with the same name.

William and Mercy Alchin had at least seven children – Elizabeth (1808), William (1810), Mercy (1813), Edmund (1816), James (1817), John (1820) and Mary (1823). Five of the six children were baptised at Headcorn near Maidstone where William was a labourer. William and Mercy followed their elder sons and emigrated to the United States arriving at New York aboard the vessel ‘Gladiator’ with three children and a grandson on 16th August 1838.

The 1840 US census records that a William Alchin was the head of a family at White Oak, Ingham County, Michigan (his sons James and Edmund initially settled at nearby Leroy which was also in Ingham County but later moved to White Oak). His family is not individually enumerated and all we know from the census is that the family comprised of  1 male aged 50-60, a female aged 40-50 and a boy aged 5-10 (a grandson or perhaps a son from a second unknown marriage).

William does not appear in any subsequent census in either England or the United States. William probably died in 1840 or early 1841 as his daughter Mercy married Nathaniel Pamment on 3rd July 1841 at ‘the residence of Widow Alchin’ at White Oak.

1.1  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at Headcorn on 20th June 1808. Elizabeth migrated to the United States arriving at New York aboard the vessel “Gladiator’ with other members of her family on 16th August 1838. We know nothing more about this woman – could she have been the 30-40 year old Elizabeth Alchin who was the head of a household at Phelpstown, Ingham County in Michigan at the time of the 1840 US census.

1.2  ~~  William Richard Alchin

William was baptised at Headcorn on 17th October 1810. According to his brother’s biography William and Edmund migrated to the United States in 1831 and at first he settled in upstate New York. We know nothing more definitely about William.

William may have married Elizabeth who was born between 1800 and 1810. The 1840 US census records that Elizabeth Alchin was the head of a household at Phelpstown in Ingham County in Michigan. If so William was probably already dead and it may have been their child who was living at nearby White Oak. William is not recorded in any subsequent US census.

1.3  ~~  Mercy Alchin

Mercy was born at Headcorn in late 1812 and she was baptised at Headcorn on 10th January 1813. She had a natural born child – James (1834). Mercy migrated to the United States arriving at New York aboard the vessel ‘Gladiator’ with other members of her family on 16th August 1838.

Mercy married Nathaniel Pamment at her mother’s house at White Oak, Ingham County, Michigan on 3rd July 1841; Nathaniel was born at Ann Arbor, Massachusetts in 1817. Nathaniel and Mercy had at least two children – Emily (1842) and Preston (1845). Both of their children died during an epidemic in September 1848.

Mercy died of consumption at Stockbridge, Ingham County on 26th April 1850 aged 37 years and she was buried with her children at North Stockbridge cemetery.

1.3.1  ~~  James Alchin

James was probably born at Headcorn in about 1834 and he was baptised at Headcorn on 18th June 1837. James migrated to the United States arriving at New York aboard the vessel ‘Gladiator’ with other members of her family on 16th August 1838. He is probably the 5-10 year old boy referred to in the 1840 US census with his grandfather.

1.3.2  ~~  Emily Pamment

Emily was born in Michigan in April 1842. Emily died at Stockbridge, Ingham County on 5th September 1848 aged 6 ½ years. She is buried with her mother and brother at North Stockbridge cemetery.

1.3.3  ~~  Preston Pamment

Preston was born in Michigan in April 1845. Preston died at Stockbridge, Ingham County on 2nd September 1848 aged 3 ½ years. He is buried with his mother and sister at North Stockbridge cemetery.

1.4  ~~  Edmund Alchin

Edmund was born in the Maidstone area (possibly at Headcorn) on 25th February 1816. There is no surviving record of his baptism and we only know for sure that he was the son of William and Mercy from his biographical portrait which was published during his lifetime in 1891.

Edmund and his elder brother William emigrated to the United States in 1831 and after a short period in upstate New York, Edmund moved west and settled at Leroy in County Ingham in southern central Michigan. Edmund married Ann Charlotte Angell in 1835; she was born at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire on 27th January 1817 the daughter of William Angell and Esther Collingbourne.

From History of Ingham and Eaton Counties, Michigan by Samuel W. Durant

Published 1880 by D.W. Ensign and Co., Philadelphia

EDMUND ALCHIN, in point of settlement, antedates many of the pioneers. He recalls 1837 as the year of his advent, though his presence at that early date is not recollected by other early settlers. It is possible that Mr Alchin may have been so remote from others as to not render them conscious of his presence. If he is correct he would certainly rank as the second settler. His location was upon section 33, where he cleared fifty acres for parties in New York, receiving for it $5 per acre and what he could raise, and having six years in which to perform the work. His father, later, purchased in White Oak, where his son returned. In 1847 he located upon section 23, on 120 acres which had been partially cleared, occupying a dilapidated log school-house until a log dwelling was erected.

Mr Alchin now has a spacious residence upon his land, which is cleared and well improved. James Alchin came with his brother and settled upon the same section but at a later date removed to Shiawassee County.

Edmund and Ann had eleven children of whom the names of only eight are known – William (1838), Elizabeth (1840), George (1842), Anan (1844), Levi (1846), Angelina (1848), Anna (1852) and Arloa (1855). Two other boys (names unknown) died respectively in 1855 aged 10 months and 1858 aged 6 weeks. The 1850 census records that Edmund was a farmer and he and his wife and six of their children were living at Leroy where Edmund had cleared about 80 acres of virgin land along the east bank of Kalamink Creek.

The 1860 census records that Edmund was a farmer and he and his wife and their eight children were living at Leroy. Edmund had real estate valued at $5,300 and personal estate valued at $750. The 1870 census records that Edmund was a farmer and he and his wife and three of their children were still living at Ingham. His real estate was now valued at $6,000 and his personal estate at $870 (he had probably settled some of his land on his married sons George and Anan who were his neighbours).

The 1880 census records that Edmund was a retired farmer and he and his wife were living alone at Leroy. Ann died at Leroy on 16th February 1887 (346/444) aged 70 years of ‘female weakness’. She is buried in the Alchin cemetery at Leroy. Edmund subsequently married a widow Mary C. Sowle, she was the daughter of William and Sarah Birch and she was born at Washington County, New York on 5th November 1829.

Edmund was still alive in 1891 but he is not recorded in the 1900 census by which time he had probably died. A biographical piece of Edmund was published during his lifetime in 1891. He was probably buried in the cemetery on the family farm which later became the town cemetery for Leroy.

EDMUND ALLCHIN

The county of Kent, England is the place of nativity of the gentleman whose portrait is shown on the opposite page (below) and whose biography we here briefly record. More than three-quarters of a century have passed since he made his appearance in the world, his natal day being February 25th, 1816. He is a son of William and Mercy (Hawkins) Allchin, his parents both being natives of England. He was reared on a farm and received the rudiments of his education in the pay schools of his native land. He would not be worthy of the name of a progressive Englishman, however, had he not taken advantage of the desultory course of study that he enjoyed to make experimental discoveries for himself in literature and the sciences, and by his self-imposed curriculum has acquired a position which ranks him as an intelligent and well-read man.

In 1831 when our subject was sixteen years of age he with an elder brother, William, emigrated to America, taking passage at London in a sailing vessel and after an ocean voyage extending over seven weeks he landed in New York City, where he resided for a short time. From there he proceeded to Monroe County, N.Y., where he remained for a short period. In 1837 when the subject of the admission of Michigan as a State was being agitated, our subject came to Ingham County, locating first on section 33, Leroy Township. In order to penetrate to the land which they had taken up they were obliged to cut away the timber for a distance of six miles.

On reaching their tract our subject cleared fifty acres of land and there he built the first frame barn in Leroy Township. He resided upon this tract for six years, thence removing to White Oak, Township where he staid for several years. In 1847 he settled on his present farm which is located on section 23, Leroy Township. At the time of his purchase about twenty acres had been improved and the balance he has cleared, broken and cultivated himself. On his advent into the country Indians and wolves were a more frequent sight than the face of a white man and occasionally a bear was seen. He is now the owner of eighty acres of fertile and productive land.

Edmund Allchin

In 1835 Mr Allchin was united in marriage to Miss Ann C. Angell who bore him eleven children, six of whom are living; they are by name as follows: Elizabeth, Anan H., Levi S., Esther, Anna and Arloa. Elizabeth is the wife of James Monroe; Esther married Alpheus Bixby; Anna is the wife of William Marsh; Arloa married A.H. Libbie.

Mrs Ann C. Allchin died in 1888. Our subject three years later was a second time married, his bride being Mrs Mary C. Sowle, of Livingstone County, Mich. Their nuptials were solemnized October 20, 1890. Mrs Allchin is a native of Washington County N.Y. , and was born November 5, 1829. She was a daughter of William and Sarah Birch, natives of New York State. Mr Allchin has served in a public capacity for a long time, having been School Director and Assessor of his school district, Highway Commissioner and also Justice of the Peace. He is one of the oldest active representatives of pioneer days in Leroy Township and can recall many incidents of pioneer adventure. He was formerly a Whig, but on the reconstruction of the party became a Republican. Now, however, he votes with the Prohibitionists.

Having passed his days in the hardest labour of pioneer life, Mr Allchin is now enjoying the knowledge that his early efforts have given him a comfortable support for his declining years. He rests content in the knowledge of a life well spent. He has been a member of the Baptist Church for over half a century and was the prime mover and main supporter in the building of the First Baptist Church of Webberville, Ingham County.
